Everything seemed fine for Samhain, Nadine, and Judas while they tried to heal from the events of the Uprising a year and a half ago. That is until a new group started threatening their safety, trying to bring back the ruthless regime they had fought so hard to eradicate. The new threat already burned down Samhain's home, leaving Judas lost and having to open up his home for his stranded friends while they can do nothing but watch history repeat itself.
But the trio are soon called forward by the new government, who have decided to re-establish the shattered Rebellion in a desperate bid to shut down the threat. However, with so many unknowns about who or what the threat is—time may be running out to save an entire nation.
L.J. Kerry is an author based in England. She’s an avid reader turned author with some of her favourite genres being Fantasy and Dystopia. Kerry likes to spend her free time playing video games and travelling.
This book is the sequel to Listed and the story is set 2 years after the uprising which overthrew the government (Our Leader).
Things have actually berm going pretty well. The country even restored its original name, there are no more tasks, no more abuse/killing. It’s a real democracy.
However there is this group that call themselves RDG and want to see the old system restored.
So Nadine, Judas, Carlos abs several other characters we’ve already met will have to see if they are able to prevent this from happening.
Again, suspense, action, romance, spice and LGBTQ rep. Definitely enjoyed the story! Gave it 3,5 stars but Goodreads doesn’t do halves, so rounded up to a 4.
The war has ended…at least so it seems. Judas, Nadine, and Samhain have started to settle into a new normal, but out of the ashes of Denme has emerged a new group, the DRG, determined to bring back Our Leader’s rule. Now, the Rebellion must come back together to fight a new foe, all while facing their own internal demons…and choosing their own paths.
LJ Kerry takes us back to this dystopian world where even after the “good guys” win, there is still much to be done. This is a realistic approach not always taken in dystopian literature; often, we see the Rebellion succeeding…and then all is fine. But here, there is countless contention amongst the groups, as well as an attempt as normalcy. Between fights, the team goes bowling, goes on dates, and even gets ice cream! But the terror is still there.
One thing that I really appreciate Kerry taking the time to explore is PTSD and mental illness. Judas, Nadine, and Samhain – the three POV characters in Rebound – have their own demons. Judas struggles with PTSD of killing during the Rebellion; Nadine is facing her own nightmares regarding her father’s betrayal; and Samhain battles schizophrenia, leading to erratic decisions. These are realistic and often overlooked aspects of the genre, and I applaud Kerry for putting this into her writing.
Overall, Rebound is much better written than Listed; the prose is stronger, the descriptions and characterization more sound. Yet, Rebound is also a story with less at stake. Yes, there is the DRG raising chaos across the nation…but there isn’t a single leader or rule they are trying to dismantle. Rather, Rebound is an exploration of internal struggles…and determining what is best for each character in the end.
While I think Rebound is the stronger book, I preferred Listed’s plot more for this reason. I liked the higher stakes. Some of critiques from Listed carry over to Rebound as well; so much happens in these two books, I almost feel like they could have been a trilogy…or longer! There’s so much more I want to know about Denme’s rule, Samhain’s childhood, and Nadine’s family. Plus, there are so many parts of Denme, Olympia, and the rest of this dystopia world that we could have explored!
Yet, with that being said, Rebound is action packed and will keep you on the edge of your seat through each twist and turn. You’ll be screaming at certain deaths, and your heart will stand still when the stakes are high.
If you want a good dystopian read, the Listed Duology is definitely one to add to your TBR!
-Big thanks to the author for this free copy for the Indie Novembre TBR takeover-
Life has been rather good for Nadine, Judas and Samhain after they took down the Leader. However, when a group of people start threatening their peaceful lives by trying to bring back the old Denmé, they will have to step up once again and fight for their freedom. They will have to all work together to protect the balance they had worked so hard to find.
What a journey this book was! First, I'd like to really congratulate the author because I found the writing really more fluid in this book, which was great. I absolutely loved that Samhain was a main character. Being inside his head and learning more about him was amazing. It's something I quite alove about this duology too, the fact that the characters are really unique and original. I loved the atmosphere of the book, which was rather stressful, always weary and all. Even when there were "trivial" scenes, there was always danger lurking in the corners and I really liked it. However, I would have liked the book to be slightly more fast-paced. It felt a bit too slow for me, but it's my own personal opinion of course. I laughed and cried and gasped several times and it was really appreciated. I really enjoyed watching the characters step up again to save what they believe in and seeing how they evolved, the author really focused on their emotions and how they dealt with their trauma and it was really realistic and interesting. I did find the romance a bit quick though, but it made sense and in the end, I liked the two of them together, their relationship being very healthy and fun. I'm glad to have discovered this story and these characters and look forward to reading L.J.'s next books!
I'd recommend if you enjoyed the first one and want to know what happens next! You won't be disappointed!
"Are any of you injured?" "Physically, no. Mentally, probably all of us."
The rusted metal walls were infested with mildew spores that crawled up them like ivy.
Getting to beta read this book was such an amazing experience. Kerry has come a long way since Listed and even though the world is still the same, the story and characters are so much stronger. It was truly amazing to see how everyone has grown during the time between book 1 and 2, and how they continued to grow through Rebound. It's such a powerful story of friends and lovers helping each other through trauma and mental illness without expecting anyone to fix them. The ending of this book left me a bubbling mess, but it was a very satisfying ending. These are characters that will stay with me forever.
I received an ARC of Rebound from the author and I am so glad I did! This is a sequel to Listed and I was very impressed with the issues it dealt with after the characters went through the Uprising in the first book. As Denmé is getting back to normal, a group wants to bring back the old regime and the Rebellion must come back together to fight. Just as in Listed, the detail is wonderful in this book. I highly recommend this duology.
I loved this sequel and the focus on Nadine and Samhain. I loved the plot as well as always the representation from the characters. The exploration of mental health/illness was amazing and i can't wait for more of her books to be released.
I'd like to thank the publisher (myself) for giving me an ARC of this book.
Holy smokes. Are we okay? We're okay. I am so proud of the entire cast of characters after going through utter hell in book one and having that repeated in book two, their growth throughout the two books has been exceptional. Samhain now being a main character was so insightful into what was probably going through his head in book one, back when he was nothing more than a secondary character, but at some points it was terrifying.
The plot twists were shocking. Even my heart was racing at some points. I cried, laughed on more than one occasion. I highly suggest you pick this book up. Especially if you love slow burn romance, spice, diverse cast and found family.
