I love a good revenge plot and this one was a doozy. The twists were so good! I didn’t find myself skimming quite a bit but the story was excellent. Thanks for goodreads for the copy!

In the hot summer of 1914 a boy vanishes, never to be seen again. Now, in 1920, the once esteemed Stilwell family of Darkacre Hall find their already troubled lives thrown into disarray when new evidence leads to the boy's case being re-opened - and this time they themselves are under police scrutiny. As the dead return to haunt the living, old resentments resurface and loyalties are tested, while secrets risk being unearthed that could destroy them all.

One thing I dislike is liars, but I did like this book even though there were some really good liars. We also get murder, mystery and deceit. We learn of some of the horror's soldiers had to face during WWII. We also get a story of revenge, betrayal, secrets, guilt and grief. The story read a bit like an Agatha Christie novel. The characters are well developed, but not all of them are likeable. The plotline has been well sought out. Although this can be quite a dark read, it also has some humour to it. Not everyone is who they appeared to be. The story is told from multiple perspectives. It also has the perfect ending.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #HQ and the author #AnitaFrank for my ARC of #TheGoodLiars in exchange for an honest review.

In the lingering, overbearingly hazy summer of 1914, a local boy vanishes into what appears to be thin air never to be seen again. But that isn’t the only tragedy of the season, for hidden inside the slowly decaying walls of Darkacre Hall reside a seemingly well put together family who couldn’t be happier. But that dear reader, is nothing more than just another lie veiling something much more heinous and disturbing. The truth of which could destroy every single one of them if they are not careful.
Now, in 1920, the once-esteemed Stilwell family of Darkacre Hall find their already troubled and fractured lives thrown into even more disarray when the arrival of an outsider soon upsets the balance of power within and when new evidence leads to the missing boy’s case being reopened, the family find themselves under police scrutiny and a detective determined to uncover just what happened back in 1914 as that poor soul could still be out there somewhere alone, scared. Or perhaps fate was even less kind.
The dead mock and haunt those lucky enough to still be alive, resentments once buried resurface and loyalties are tested far beyond their breaking point, and just who is this outsider that has appeared on their doorstep? More importantly what does she know about that fateful summer all those years ago?
You’d better batten down the hatches - I hear there’s a storm coming….
A hauntingly good read which captured my imagination, laced with intrigue and doubt, The Good Liars will make you believe you know what’s going on. But you have no idea.

The Good liars by Anita Frank is the third book that I have read and enjoyed. I found this a bit darker than her previous novels.
Set in 1920 just after the war Sarah arrives at Darkacre Hall to take a job as Housekeeper for the troubled Stilwell family. Maurice and Leonard and still not coping after serving in the war. Maurice is traumatized as has nightmares of his times in the trenches and Leonard is living but wants to end his life after losing his limbs. There friend Victor is also living with them, and Maurice’s wife Ida is trying to cope with it all.
The Police arrives at Darkacre. Enquiring about a missing boy that disappeared in the grounds in 1914. Apparently new information has come to life saying that the body of the boy is in the grounds.
Thank you, HQ, for a copy of Anita Franks latest offering. This is a well written mystery story; The characters were well developed but I didn’t think they were very likeable and although I enjoyed most of the story, it didn’t blow me away. 3.5 stars.

The writing is so transportive, I truly felt I was in that large decaying house in 1920 following the first world War.

The Good Liars is a slow burn mystery of sorts, and very character driven. My heart broke for those impacted by the war, physically and mentally.

The ending was absolutely superb! 👏

I will definitely be quick to read the next book by Anita Frank!

In 1920 Sarah arrives at Darkacre Hall to work as a nurse/companion for the youngest Stilwell brother who was wounded in WWI. Leonard Stilwell lives at the Hall with older brother, Maurice, & Maurice's wife, Ida. Their lifelong friend Victor makes up the strange quartet. Up until now Ida has been taking care of all the household tasks as it has proven remarkably difficult to recruit staff, so Ida is happy for Sarah's arrival. Things seem placid on the surface but there are dark secrets hidden below, strange supernatural occurrences begin & both Maurice & Leonard suffer from night terrors which become worse when a police detective turns up asking questions about the disappearance of a boy from before the war.

I read a previous book from the author based on the aftermath of WWII which I thought was well-written, but this one is even better. There is the perfect mix of possible supernatural occurrences, alongside the sinister figure of Detective Sergeant Verity who is reopening the investigation into what happened to the boy who disappeared. None of the characters are particularly likeable but I thought the plot was excellently done (even though I did guess most of what was happening). I thought the author really showed the horrors of war & the issues that returning soldiers faced after the end of the war (permanent disfigurement, disability, & what we now term PTSD.) Verdict: well-written & atmospheric, this historical chiller keeps the attention & delivers an excellent conclusion.

TWs: war injuries including graphic descriptions of facial injuries, suicide attempts, execution.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HQ, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I liked this A LOT.

This is the second book I've read by this author and the second book she's written that I've loved. I'd forgotten just how much I loved the writing in her previous book The Lost Ones but there's something about it that draws you fully into the story. There's a real sense of place and time and the atmosphere and tension running throughout is perfection.

Like The Lost Ones this story is a mystery thriller set just after the first world war. There's a real Gothic feel to it and the suggestion that there's something supernatural afoot. It's an atmospheric and twisty story that I found incredibly difficult to put down. There was the odd chilling moment and a few surprises I did not see coming.

The characters feel incredibly real and are so wonderfully crafted I could picture them exactly and felt like I knew them. They are not necessarily the most likeable and in fact a couple of them are downright horrid but they fascinated me and I was fully invested in their stories. Not everyone is who they first appear to be and I loved that the author gave us a taste from each of their perspectives. It truly brought the story to life.

My only very slight niggle is the way some of the reveals come about and how the events of the past are covered. I probably would have preferred a more gradual reveal.

It is however an absolutely brilliant read and one I'd recommend to anyone who likes a mystery with a gothic feel.

Thank to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an advance copy of the book. This has in no way influenced my review.

A country house in need of a servant and a family hiding something all spells trouble, mystery, and drama in this atmospheric story.

The ending didn't come as much of a surprise, but I still found myself needing to know what would happen next.

Equally as gripping and as mysterious as The Lost Ones.

An adolescent goes missing at the start of WWI, and is not found.

In 1920, the once rich Stilwells live in their estate home, Darkacre Hall, unable to care for it properly, and the men suffering the effects of the war. They are Maurice and Ida Stilwell, a married couple, Leonard Stilwell, Maurice's brother, badly maimed in the war and confined to a wheelchair, and their friend Victor Monroe, a longtime associate of the brothers. Maurice spent time in Craiglockhart, treated for shellshock after the war before returning home, while Leonard loathes his damaged boy.

Inspector Hume arrives one day, asking about the missing boy, with all claiming no knowledge of his whereabouts.

Not long after, a young woman answers an advertisement from Ida for a housekeeper. Sarah Hove was a nurse during the war, and is not put off by Leonard's many needs, and is hired instantly.

She quickly and competently takes over, and gradually learns more about the frustrations and angers that are both driving the family apart, and the experiences during the War that tie them irreparably together. At the same time, Maurice begins claiming he is hearing and smelling things that no one else can, with the family convinced his shellshock has returned.

A Sergeant Verity shows up to continue to ask questions. He, too, has been maimed during his service, and Victor and Ida, both intolerant of any disability or imperfection, are uncomfortable and increasingly angered by the man's persistence. It becomes clear that perhaps the family knows more about the boy's disappearance than was thought, and the effects of Verity's presence, as well as the phantoms Maurice continues to experience, cause tensions to rise, while even quiet Sarah becomes suspicious to the family.

This was a wonderfully claustrophobic novel, with author Anita Frank showing the family, already shaky and isolated, beginning to crack and turn on each other with the reopening of the 1914 case, and Verity's sinister hints and questions.

The Stilwells and Monroe are uniformly self-absorbed and of varying degrees of unlikeable. It's clear they're keeping secrets, tied to actions taken in 1914 and during the war, but what they are, when revealed, are emblematic of people who feel themselves better than and above others. It's easy to dismiss Sarah's quiet competence as she keeps things going in the background, but she herself seems to be keeping secrets.

Frank does not shy away from showing readers the horrors of the war, and its subsequent trauma, whether from what we now call PTSD, or from depression and suicide.

The atmosphere is heavy and dark, and it's a shock and relief when all the unresolved anger and violence explodes. Frank ably creates a chilling story fraught with lies and unsaid things, and populated well drawn characters. I loved the constant feeling of danger and the great prose, and greatly enjoyed this book.

I also listened to the audiobook, and voice actor Kristin Atherton does a terrific job inhabiting all the characters. Her Maurice is great as he seems initially like a happy puppy, but as events progress he comes apart, with her voice conveying his desperate hold on his sanity. Her Sarah's quiet voice always seems to hint at great emotions, while Victor's dry, sneering tones allowed me to perfectly picture him looking bored and frustrated with everyone around him.

Thank you to Netgalley, HQ, and HarperAudio Adult for these ARCs in exchange for my review.

In 1914, Bobby Higgins, a 17-year old young man with learning difficulties, disappears without a trace.

In 1920, his case is reopened again much to the shock and confusion of the Stilwell family.

The Stilwells live in Darkacre Hall, a grand house in the past, but now it’s crumbling and hard to maintain.

The house is occupied by Maurice Stilwell and his wife, Ida. Maurice served in the war but the man that returned home has changed: he is plagued by nightmares and has a constant twitch in his eye. Ida is unhappy as the maintenance of the house falls on her. She is reminiscent of the past, before the war, where things were glamorous.

The other two occupants of the house include Leonard Stilwell, Maurice’s brother, and Victor Monroe, the brothers’ friend.

Both men also served in the war. Leonard returned home physically altered: both of his legs were amputated and he also lost one of his arms. He is wheelchair bound, bitter about his experience, often saying he doesn’t want to live anymore.

Victor Monroe loved the war, he was proud to serve his country. He seems to be the only man not affected about what happened in the trenches.

When an Inspector arrives and tells the family that new evidence has come to light with regards to Bobby Higgins, the Stilwells begin to unravel. It seems that they all have a secret (or two) tucked up their sleeve…

What a fantastic story!

I was hooked straight from the beginning – trying to guess whose son was declined their name on the WWI memorial.

What started off as a simple cold case investigation soon turned into a family drama with a supernatural element.

It affected all occupants of Darkacre Hall. Maurice’s mental health deteriorated, Leonard kept talking about repentance, someone sent a nasty package to Ida…

Victor, who was truly despicable, was the only one trying to view the situation rationally. However, someone or something wanted for them to pay for their sins.

The Good Liars explores the horrors of war and how it affected people afterwards. I felt for poor Leonard, disabled at such a young age. He was the only character that I sympathised with.

This book has also taught me something new about the Order of the White Feather and how women would give out white feathers to men who didn’t enlist to fight.

Overall, it’s such a great story about redemption, revenge and seeking justice.

Oh what a treat this book was for me! I absolutely devoured it. I knew it would be good as I loved The Lost Ones which was one of Anita Frank’s previous novels. It is still one of my favourite books and this has now joined it. It ticked all the boxes for me.

This book is an historical murder mystery in a gothic setting with supernatural vibes. Seances, an old stately home falling into disrepair, inclement weather, a family haunted by secrets, what more do you need!

The pain of guilt and regret is a strong theme in this book alongside lies, grief and the physical and psychological trauma of what war can do to people. With an atmospheric and claustrophobic air to it, I was glued to the pages.

The characters are very flawed and some I disliked with such intensity! Then others I really took to. There was just such great character portrayal that gives you such strong feelings about them all. The mystery of who in the house is covering up for who and the secrets and spookiness surrounding them all had me on tenterhooks!

The Good Liars is the perfect atmospheric and unsettling book for the Autumn months ahead. The twists are to die for. Ensure you pick this book up, I can promise you that you will not regret it.

This novel has some interesting twists and I wanted to know how it would end. But some of the main characters were so unlikable as to seem unrealistic and, worst of all, I found the portrayal of the disabled veteran insulting to people with disabilities.

Thank you to HQ and Simon Audio for the copies to review.

This was my first read of Anita Frank’s and I sure did enjoy it. I somehow got cozy mystery vibes from the cover and well instead how about we do gothic murder in a historical fiction world with a supernatural element? UMM Yes, please! This takes place just after the First World War, and Sarah has taken a job as the new maid of Darkacre Hall, once a grand house but now is falling apart. One could say the same about the family that occupies it. Also at the start of WWI a local boy went missing and was never found; in 1920 his case is reopened and an inspector arrives at Darkacre Hall claiming a new witness indicates the boy was last seen there. Some are shocked, but regardless, the past of all are coming back to haunt them and they slowly begin to unravel along with their secrets.

Goodness I really enjoyed this one, there are so many layers to the story here, it’s not just solely a mystery, and yet it’s also so much more than historical fiction. There is also a supernatural element too, making this genre blending story a captivating one right from the start. The audio was wonderful, I really enjoyed listening to this one. I won’t spoil anything but it was fun to try and guess who was behind it all. I definitely recommend this one, and while you read this I will be reading Frank’s backlist!

A proper who done it tale complete with an old spooky house, a sheepish maid and a murder!
There are plenty of secrets tied up in this house but can one detective pull enough threads to unravel them all?

“The Good Liars” is a story of crime, deceit and murder, set in the early 1920.

This was my first book by Anita Frank, and while I’m not an avid historical fiction reader, I’ve enjoyed this one. While the plot did have its moments of predictability, and the pace was quite slow for my taste, I found myself thoroughly engrossed thanks to Frank's eloquent and moving writing style. Her ability to paint a vivid picture of the era, with the lingering aftermath of the Great War and the profound impact (physical and psychological) it had on everyone, is truly commendable.

Most of the characters were unlikable and occasionally annoying, which added a layer of complexity to the story.

If you enjoy Agatha Christie you will probably appreciate the atmospheric vibes of "The Good Liars." The story has that classic mystery allure, and the twist, although somewhat anticipated, was executed brilliantly. It's the kind of revelation that still manages to send shivers down your spine when it unfolds.

In conclusion, "The Good Liars" is a slow-paced gothic read with potential supernatural elements that will appeal to fans of classic mysteries and historical drama.

The inhabitants of Darkacre Hall have a new employee.

The Good Liars is blisteringly good. It has everything any reader might desire from complicated relationships, through murder and mystery to a hint of the supernatural. I absolutely loved it.

Anita Frank’s writing is fabulous. The immediacy of the continuous present tense, the naturalistic dialogue and the beautiful, stark and stunning descriptions that are so wonderfully evocative, all combine into a skilled, immersive and gripping story. Every sense is catered for and every emotion is engendered by the writing, from fear and apprehension to disdain and pity.

The plot itself is, in my opinion, perfect. The brittle Gatsby-esque feel of post First World War events, contrasting with the realistic depiction of war action, combined with a fast moving, creepy narrative makes The Good Liars totally riveting. It’s one of those stories that draws in the reader completely. Certainly I guessed some of the plot’s aspects, but that made no difference to my enjoyment or engagement. In fact, I was all the more enthralled in witnessing the skill of Anita Frank in crafting her story. The title too couldn’t be more fitting. Liars abound, but some are better at it than others and some are more forgivable than others so that this is a narrative that questions morality. It makes the reader think even as they are entertained.

The reduced numbers of characters provide an intensity and intimacy that allows readers to witness their progression, and indeed decline, over the course of the book as they are gradually revealed. Through them Anita Frank illustrates mature and affecting themes, obviously exploring truth, as the title suggests, but also delving into love, marriage, war, guilt, forgiveness, spirituality, retribution, family, friendship and loyalty. Plot, character and theme are masterfully woven into a captivating, fantastic read and these strands are difficult to separate for individual comment as they are so integral and captivating. I loathed Ida with a passion, pitied Leonard (and equally felt conflicted and patronising in doing so), was unsettled by Victor and was entirely discombobulated by Maurice, unsure whether to feel sorry for him, or to think his evident shell shock distress was befitting and deserved – this maelstrom of reaction was very unsettling. And this is the ultimate power of The Good Liars. Whilst enormously entertaining, it is also profoundly, emotionally intelligent, illustrating how goodness and truth might be far less definitive than we imagine.

I thought The Good Liars was a deliciously told tale of secrets, intrigue and truth. It’s perfect for reading next to a roaring fire and is one of my favourite novels this year. I could not have enjoyed it more. Not to be missed!

"The Good Liars" by Anita Frank is a historical fiction novel set in the 1920s just after World War I in England.

Sarah is a young woman hired to be a housekeeper and nurse assistant at Dark Acre Hall. The Stillwell boys, Hugo, Leonard, Maurice, and Maurice's best friend, Victor Monroe, all served in the war, and all suffered damage from it. Hugo passed away. Leonard lost both legs and one arm. Maurice was shell-shocked. Ida is the wife of Maurice.

A teenage boy, Bobby, went missing in 1914. Now, in 1920, the police are trying to figure out what happened to him.

This book has a mystery and great spooky atmosphere. It has some good twists which I enjoyed.

Having read two of Anita’s books previously, I knew I was in for a fantastic read.
Set just after the First World War, we begin with Sarah walking the long road towards her new place of employment, Darkacre Hall, with a sense of foreboding. She arrives to find the hall in need of a good clean. Since the last member of staff left, the owners have let the housework slip.
She finds the house occupied by a couple, his brother and a friend. And a parrot.
This is an unhappy house, full of secrets.
Then the police arrive to re-investigate the case of a missing young man following a tip off. They intend to dig up the woods surrounding the hall.
The whole story is set in the suffocating surroundings of the hall, other than a few flashbacks to the war and to an event they would rather remain hidden. The terrible weather adds an extra layer to the bleakness of the situation.
Loved it!

“The good liars” By Anita Frank, is set in the 1920s after the first world war.
The characters of the novel have been impacted greatly by the war and are dealing with the physical and mental aftermath of the war. Added to that there appears that a six year old missing case of a village boy is being reopened and he had last been seen on the grounds of Darkacre hall.

The stilwell family and their family friend Victor appear to be haunted with ghosts of the past and their own actions.

Suddenly all the secrets are on the verge of being exposed and that brings out the best and worst in them.
This is a quick and easy thriller to read with elements of supernatural. An old mansion in the 20th century in a storm also reflects the chaos and turbulence within the characters.

The narrator of this story really took you back to the time of the book. You really felt the atmosphere of families returning after The 1st World War.
There is a complex mystery about the Stilwell family who have hired a nurse for the terrible effects of war on the youngest son.
When the police reopen the case of a missing boy before the war this family will have all its secrets opened.
A slow paced start to the story is well worth sticking with as a tale of revenge really takes hold.

A tale of a family plagued by horrific decisions that are resurfacing and haunting them.

Post WWI, these characters are not only haunted by the war but decisions they’ve made in the past. There are things happening throughout the house that can’t be explained. Is it paranormal? Could the ghosts of their pasts be back for revenge?

An original story, gripping and surprising. The characters were very well developed. It was easy to love and to hate some of them.

Fiction, historical, mystery, suspense, crime, gothic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Okay, who wants this story summarized into pop-culture / lit references?

We have Helen Of Troy meets Band of Brother meets the Downton Abbey.
That's really all you should know.

I enjoyed it. Although the twist was no surprise, i thought it was rounded off nicely.
There are no happy endings here really.

And again, the narrator was superb.
I really do like the narrators lately.
Highly recommend if the 1920's decade hermetic murder mystery is your jam.

Best Served Cold

Very readable post WW1 story exposing long hidden secrets, but behind that, the era of the Great War, the society around that time, with the definite tiers of place in that world, the effect of war on men, both physically and mentally, and how far someone will go to hide a crime, bettered only by how far someone will go to exact revenge.

I recently when through a phase of reading more suspense/thriller/mystery type novels, and this was another good one. It started a bit slower for me, but once I got into it I felt it picked up. It's a historical setting which is a nice change of pace.

All of the characters were pretty awful, but they were supposed to be! The author did a good job of still creating an engaging story with unlikeable characters. It got pretty creepy in certain parts, and is a dark story overall. It was very well written.
