For a girl who steers clear of the fantasy genre for the most part I jumped into reading this novel as an ARC reader with no idea what to expect. I could write a very in depth review, but I think I just want to list WHY I Ioved it to urge you to read this phenomenal book and support this author!
*-the world building: I was never confused and there is just enough detail to fully envision the landscape of Erinya. It was literally like watching a show/movie in my brain!
*-Short chapters and good pacing: jam packed with action but also with excellent character development
*-how the theme of nursery rhymes was incorporated was genius since as a kid my mother read all those Mother Goose rhymes to me so it really helped bring the characters to life
*-the dialogue!! So witty and natural-I think it was the best part of the book for me
*-the action sequences had me on the edge of my seat, I was never able to guess where this book was headed, a complete mystery to the end!
*-it’s apparent there will be future books written about this world and I can’t wait to read them!

Thanks Sabrina for including me in the early process of your new book. I hope it takes the world by storm because it is seriously so good. I’m an avid reader so I’m pretty confident in saying this book is amazing!

Power is precious, my prince. And you have more than you know.

Man, did I enjoy this story. I rushed through it in only a couple of hours, which is always a good sign. Overall, my experience was a bit similar to finally reading ACOTAR a few months ago; I'm usually very picky about Voice and prose, but some special plots or characters silence my harsh inner critic, and this was definitely one of them.
The reason it's not a full four stars for me is that I am a sucker for beautiful prose, and though, as you can see by my highlighted, quotes Broken Crown definitely wasn't lacking in that aspect, it also wasn't as brimming with it as it could have been. Regardless, the worldbuilding absolutely RULED and I honestly can't wait for the sequel.

This story keeps you on your toes from beginning to end. Some books start cool, with an amazing setup that keeps surprising you, and then the ending falls flat. But this one? Hell nah. It starts with a racy-tournament, and it ends with one too 🤩

Jack felt himself smile. “Ah. So, you’re the one who has my monsters.”

We meet most characters as they're working towards a tournament that'll make the winner a Paladin. All three of them have something big to gain, and everything to lose. I absolutely loved this part of the story and I almost wish we could have seen even more of it, haha. It reminded me in all the good ways of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter, with a nice, good sprinkle of the Hunger Games.
After that three of them start out on a quest, while the other two are trying to deal with their lives that are quickly falling apart—sometimes literally. This did mean there were a lot of storylines to keep track of, but I honestly didn't mind because the plot moved forward with purpose, and it never felt boring or meandering. In the beginning, I was head over heels for Millie and already loving the doomed tragedy of Jack, but as the story went on, David really captured my heart.

David walked over and smacked him upside the head. “This is Asif. He’s still a little ungrateful that we saved his life.”
“You kidnapped me.”
“We brought you to safety.”
“Against my will!”

I loved the problems Jack has with the Voice. I loved David with his skin of glass, and the lore behind it. I loved Millie and her power, and the growth she makes from a scared rabbit into someone who's standing up for herself and her loved ones. And Jill's resentment towards Millie! It wasn't reasoned away or deemed ugly or stupid, which made her character so much more real. Jill really is unapologetically herself, which is cool to see.
ALSO ASIF IS A NATIONAL TREASURE. I will not take feedback on that point. Bo is a bit more of a mystery still, I really do hope we find out more about her in the sequel. I really appreciated the way her disability was a part of her identity, by the way. It's not trope-y or weirdly made her only character trait, but it just exists as a part of her.
And again: the worldbuilding RULED. Let me say that again a little louder for the people in the back. Different races, great explanations for magic, and giving awesome opportunities for this story.

For those of you who've read the book, my praise on a certain plottwist:

For those of you who've read the book, one comment about the Voice:

Also also: I was much too big a fan of the Voice, hahahaha. I love me some evil powerful entities with enough snark to hone a sword's edge.

The Voice grinned, glee shooting through Jack’s own body. "Soon. Soon.."

Broken Crown doesn’t get to go on my “special sauce” shelf, but I will definitely be buying it when it comes out and I’m really hooked for the sequel. Jack’s descent into further madness? Hell yeah. Millie mastering her powers? The order of the saints? DAVID MAYBE FALLING AND DYING AND IN PIECES OHGODS THE DRAMA

And one final quote to end on, because it is s t u n n i n g:
She sensed it before she saw it, the thing hanging in the corner like a dead man on a noose. She allowed herself a glance, taking in the intricate beading and long gold train.
Her mother’s wedding gown.

I mean come on, absolutely gorgeous.❤️❤️❤️❤️

This book was surprisingly good, and I already can't wait for the next installment to come out.

I initially liked the idea of different characters representing a darker side to classic nursery rhymes, and this story did not disappoint. I was quickly drawn into a tale of magic and tournaments, eager to find out what would befall the characters as they faced their own quests and curses.

Not only did each of the five point-of-view characters have a unique and interesting role to play, but they also had their own personal challenges to overcome and lessons to learn about themselves. Every chapter kept me reading into the next, and each perspective was dynamic and engaging. Filled with nefarious plots, complex character dynamics, and unique twists, this was definitely a fun read!

AHHHHHHHHHHH. WHO WOULD DO THIS? Why would you take sweet ol’ nursery rhymes and give them heart-wrenching twists?!?

Not only will this now affect me every time I hear the rhymes that were in Broken Crown, it will make me wonder what untold, tragic backstories are possibly behind every nursery rhyme that’s out there.
-Me, right after finishing the book

Broken Crown is a story that is a stand-alone page-turner in its own right, while at the same time masterfully building upon nursery rhymes to weave a story that throws twists on nostalgia.

4.5 stars!

This was such a unique twist on the nursery rhymes we all know. I thought it was super creative and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book! Only reason it wasn't a full 5 stars was because I felt some areas, especially toward the end, were a little too fast and could have been drawn out a little more.

Definitely recommend!!

I really enjoyed Broken Crown! I was quite excited when I got the arc because I knew I would be reading about magic, curses and adventures and the book delivered all of those. The writing was imaginative, beautiful and easy to get into. I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to find out what will happen.

I recommend this book to all fairytale and fantasy lovers. I can't wait to see what Sabrina will come up with next!

Was really excited to get this ARC as fantasy is one of my favorite genres. I really enjoyed the darker side of the nursery rhythms I grow up with and read to my children. Super excited for the next Bookand to see what else this author come out with in the future.

What an amazing little world. I didn’t think too much going into this book, but it sucked me in and got me hooked. And now Jill is my child as well as David.

Anywho, the overall plot was great, though were times I had my head turning around trying to figure out where we were headed next. We’re on a quest at one point and then we’re off on a side quest at the next. But the side plots proved to be beneficial, and I loved how all the characters came together in the end (how they came together and if it was a good thing or not will be left unknown to avoid spoilers.)

Characters started out “eh,” but then I grew to love them, especially Jill and David, hence my first couple of sentences. Even Jack, who was a little cocky at first, grew to be loveable. Oh, and Millie is cool. And Bo, young one as she is. Grimzy (I hope I recalled his name correctly) is probably one of the best ones, if I’m gonna be honest. The king needs to be slapped with a brick. So overall, pretty decent characters.

Anyways, I would’ve given this book 5/5 but I feel like there were too many mini plots introduced and seeds planted that it was sometimes difficult to follow. But I did pre-order the next book, which I never do (tbh I’ve never been around a current series) so Broken Crown must’ve been a good book.

Oh my, where to start.

I love this book. A fierce princess warrior? A charming prince with a dark secret, falling for the kind-hearted maid with her own powers? A man of glass with a heart of gold? A snarky shepherdess of monsters?

One of the strongest parts of a story, in my personal opinion, HAS to be the characters. And this book has that. Each POV has a strong, unique voice, and I never would turn the page and dread the next chapter because it was "that" character. I wanted to root for them, to see the succeed and change and grow. (side note, I LOVE David, he is my absolute favorite. That's all.) To see them all connect and overlap was wonderful.

I love the world-building, from sassy Mountain men to dark and twisted monsters from a history so forgotten it's become legend. The plot is quick-paced and hard to put down--something is always happening!!

All in all, I loved it. And I can't wait for the sequel.

The book opens simply enough with our main characters Jack, Jill, Millie, and David. Each of them desperately want, no need, something, but quickly their lives and fate enterwine their desires and goals. The familiar fairy tales (as you've never read them before) evolve into a dark plot of betrayal, suspense, romance, curses, a dark king, and a rising queen. The pacing of this book is excellent and never lags. The world is immersive, and you are immediately thrown into it. Although I wish I had a chance to better understand the different pre-existing clans on a deeper lvel, I almost appreciate the way the author presents these clans as they would be seen by the characters without narrated background. It's something I do hope she expands upon in the next book (of which I most certainly will be in line to purchase)! I can't wait for the physical copy to come out so that I can buy it and add it to my bookshelves! I wrote this review directly after finishing the book when my eyes were still straining from staring at the screen too long because I couldn't put it down!

Full Disclosure: I was given an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an ARC review. My review is NOT paid for and is an honest representation of my opinion.

Thank you to Equality Book Tours and the author for a review copy. This does not influence my opinion.

This was an exciting read from start to finish with many intrigues and betrayals. I did like most of the characters, but sadly only the charavter growth of Jill is fleshed out enough to ne believable,  which is probably why she is my favorite character. David was great as well until he made some out of character decisions completely out of the blue toward the end.
The other MCs, Jack, Millie, and Bo, sadly fell a bit flat, probably because there were so many POVs to cover.
Due to this, especually the ending was a bit disapointing, it would have profited from shorter chapters with differing POVs.
We do get two disabled MCs in this book, Bo and David, which was great to read as it is still rare in epic Fantasy.
The world building was super interesting, I wish I knew more about it, especially because it also would have explained some more of the plot. I do have to wonder why all the MCs are human though (correct me if I'm wrong), if their country/empire is so diverse.
I did like that the characters were based on nursery rhymes though, this was very creative.

All in all, not a bad read, but ultimately missing something.

This. Book. Is. Incredible. The fact this is Sabrina Lozier’s debut novel?! Insane. I’m a sucker for a good fractured fairytale, so fractured NURSERY RHYMES. Y’all, those rhymes are already CREEPY, so the dark twist in this book was *chefs kiss* amazing.

Jill. Girlboss, legend, Queen. There are quite a few other words to describe her, but you’ll have to read the book for them 😉 iykyk. I love her power and resolve. 🦋⚔️👑

Jack. Mysterious, attractive, King. His character is honestly so amazing. I looked forward to his chapters because of the suspense and war going on in his mind. 🔪🖤👑

Millie. Quiet, powerful, kind. I LOVE HER!!! My heart broke for her in the first chapter when I read about Doon. Her quiet strength and determination, amazing. And her POWER!!! Insane. 🕷️🧹🕯️

David. Hunter, scarred, cursed. This man is so strong. I’ve always been curious why Humpty was portrayed as an egg (probably to not scare little kids) and I LOVED the twist that was taken with him. 💔🥚🏹

Bo. Scared, Shepherdess, survivor. Poor Bo. She’s going through it. She’s an amazing morally grey character, fighting tooth and nail for herself. And her “sheep”, dang. 🐑🖤🪄

I was absolutely hooked from beginning to end. Tears were shed, gasps were released, and jaws were dropped— many, many times. So excuse me as I go read it again while waiting for the next book 🤭

Nursery rhymes just got dark and deadly, and I am HERE for it!

Jack and Jill are royalty, Miss Muffet controls spiders, Bo Peep is a shepherdess of monsters, and Humpty Dumpty is a cursed glass soldier. Need I say more of this genius?!

Narrative Voice: 3rd person (limited, multiple)

Cussing/profanity: 1/5

Drug/alcohol use: 1/5

Kissing: 1/5

Sex/nudity: 0/5

Violence/gore: 3/5

Sabrina Lozier has woven a captivating story from source material I NEVER thought would excite me. The twists on the classic nursery rhyme characters are epic, as are the Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.

David is my favorite character because I’m a sucker for a tormented boi. The Humpty Dumpty spin is awesome.

The characters each embark on their own missions, each with distinct arcs. The intertwining of their paths was very well done. And the plot twists are the cherry on top!

Sabrina Lozier’s writing is delicious; many times I read a line and thought, “Oooh that was GOOD!” She writes emotion with such poetic vividness, that the scenes bloom to life.

Stunning debut. There better be a sequel!!!

5/5 would recommend

A friend recommended this book to me, and I was immediately swept into it. I was initially worried the familiar nursery rhymes would spoil the plot, but they instead enriched the experience for me! I found myself guessing at where the plot would go and how it would tie back to the initial nursery rhyme!

The chapters are generally pretty short with good pacing. Each chapter provides a new perspective to the story, bringing a shift in tone throughout which was refreshing. I had a hard time putting the book down between chapters because the story has a way of pulling you in. I love the character development and action scenes! I found myself smiling at the dialogue often.

I don't want to spoil anything so will stop here, but give it a read! I am mid-way through the next book, Ruined Reign, and the story just keeps getting better. There were familiar YA fantasy themes retold in an unpredictable way in this story! I am DREADING finishing the second book because I will have to wait for the third lol. I really appreciated that the book had romance themes without overt sexual undertones.

Take all of the nursery rhymes you heard as a kid and combine them together to create an epic adventure and that is what you will find in the book! This was a new take on a set of characters that I loved!! From page one you are pulled into these characters lives and their journey.

Jack, Jill, Millie, David, and Bo are are on a intertwined journey that reveals truths they were not expecting.

I absolutely loved the switch between character perspectives and felt as though each one offered a crucial part of the story. The transitions between characters was seamless and allowed us an inside perspective on how the other characters were doing throughout the story as well. I felt as though the number of character perspectives was reasonable and not difficult to keep up with.

The writing of this book is beautiful! I often find with books that switch between multiple characters there can be a lack of flow and that is not the case here. Each character builds on the other, providing progression to the story and the other stories at play.

The revelations of the book and the ending leave us wanting more and I am not made about it 😊 but for real I need more!!!

Keep in mind this is a YA fantasy novel so things do not get too romantic or too intense but I can say that this does not mean this book is lacking anything!!

I had the opportunity to be an Arc Reader for this Masterpiece and would like to thank Sabrina for considering me for this opportunity.

It must be a first for me to have no words to express what a roller coaster reading this book has been.

I’m the kind of reader whose interest if captured within the first 2 to 3 chapters, will finish the book in 1-2 days max. There were so many times I started the book and had to put it down. It was a rough start as it took me some time for the book to grasp my attention. But once I reached the part of the paladin tournament and witnessed Millie’s power…. I just couldn’t put the book down.

It was just phenomenal! I could picture everything happening infront of me! I enjoy retelling of old stories we have known since we were little kids and this one just exceeds your expectations. Although it took time for me to be entranced and captivated, once it did it had me in a chokehold and still hasn’t let go! I’m sure I’m going to buy a physical copy and read it once again!

The idea of there being more to nursery rhymes appeals to me a lot. So when I came across Sabrina's instagram reel looking for ARC readers, I jumped at the opportunity to read it. I received an advance reader copy, but that doesn't affect my opinion of the book. I really liked the book, it's very well written. The characters are interesting and multi-layered. There are 5 main characters and each chapter introducing their POV's has a portion of the nursery rhyme that they come from, which is a fantastic element to the story.
This is a quest novel that follows Jack and Jill as royal twins on a hunt for a cure in a land that has multiple tribes (felines, mountain, reptile, inkwells), monsters on the loose, political intrigue, war, refugees, rebellions, oh and enchanted woods.
Highly recommend to those that like quest novels, retellings, Young Adult fantasy.
4.25 out of 5 stars.

I love it when a book gets off the ground running, and Broken Crown didn't disappoint. There is steady plot advancement throughout the whole book, with back stories and setting skillfully woven in so that you're never left confused about this fascinating world called Erinya and the unique characters that inhabit it. The characters are based on classic fairy tales, but the stories are all original, with unexpected yet satisfying twists and turns.
As an ARC reader I was reading with a critical eye, but was drawn into the story in a way that made me just want to keep reading. The writing flows with witty dialogue, clever metaphors, and vivid descriptions. I'm ready for the sequel!

Broken Crown pulled me in right from the start! The prose and plot was fantastic throughout the entire book!! I loved the use of nursery rhyme characters and how the author reimagined them in stunningly crafty ways. So many books I get really excited about and then feel horribly let down by rushed and contrived conclusions. This book did not let me down! I was happily wondering where the story would lead and how it would conclude. At the end, I felt like it was spectacular in allowing characters and the plot to play out fully and satisfying on multiple levels. Now I just have to wait for the next book in this series!

I had a lot of fun reading this book! I loved the dark twist on these nursery rhymes—it gave me some Gail Carson Levine vibes, but with a more high fantasy feel. The world and story are truly unique, and I can tell that Lozier put a lot of work into developing the cultures and lore within. ✨

I’m very intrigued to see what happens with the rest of this series! I am a huge fan of Jack (morally gray for the win), and I can’t wait to see how these characters find their way out of this mess. Like, seriously, it’s a MESS and I’m horrified that my favorites might not make it out alive! 😂💔

Phenomenal story. If you are a fan of Once Upon A Time you will be all over it. Fast paced story told from the perspective of multiple protagonists keeps the story interesting and well rounded. Full of mystery, magic, monarchies, soldiers and creatures that lurk in the dark. Fantastic fresh take on the classic nursery rhymes. This book will have you hanging on to your seat in anticipation for the sequel!

Lozier has taken some of our beloved nursery rhymes and twisted them into a story about evil kings, Princes, princesses, maids and monsters.
Ol King Cole, Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet and Bo Peep are barely recognisable in Loziers young adult fantasy.
I really enjoyed Loziers first novel - Broken Crown. It was well written and engaging. I hope that there will be more books to follow - perhaps even more nursery rhymes to be twisted.
If you enjoy monsters, evil kings, sword fights and possible redemption, give Broken Crown by Sabrina Lozier a go.

Should have left it as a DNF at around 200 pages in 2022.

Forced myself through it now and it was kinda downhill from here. Everything felt hasty and kinda convoluted. 😅

Book also ends on a cliffhanger. But sadly I absolutely do not care for these characters anymore. Next book is not out yet, so beware that if you like some of the characters, you will not now if or when this will continue.

I gave it 3 stars, cuz it is a debut and the first half was fun.

This was delightful! The combination of its unique setting, fleshed out characters, and interesting worldbuilding jam-packed into the plot made for a really fun read. Not a single scene was wasted and the action had me (figuratively) on the edge of my seat at times. Multiple POVs connecting and slowly weaving together are some of my favorite things to read, and this book pulled that off in a really satisfying way. Great fun, 4⭐️

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Sabrina Lozier. It was a dark, epic fantasy with a fantastic premise. Lozier uses nursery rhymes as the foundation for characters with dark and complicated back stories. I was worried it would be overdone or undercooked, but no, Sabrina did it brilliantly.

Perfect for anyone who enjoys a fantasy adventure. I can't wait to read the next one.
