I liked the premise lots--a brother and sister spend the winter as caretakers of a small Maine Island. If it had just been their doings and making do and difficulties surmounted, I'd have loved it. Unfortunately, there was also a "plot"--mysterious bad guys and stolen money. I did not like this part at all. Also Meg did not appreciate her kittens.

Picked this and Meg of Herons Cove up at a sale by donation. I had no idea there were other Meg books! I am enjoying reading more of the adventures of Meg who is orphaned but lives under the care of her older brother. Not likely a scenario that would happen today, but these books are a creation of their time and written with an understanding of the Maine coast as Ladd was born and raised in Maine and lived on a island. A nice break from our modern life to read about a way of life we no longer have which was one of working hard just to eat and stay warm. The contentment of the characters is endearing even with the conflict of knowing two hapless men want whats hidng under the floorboards of the island cottage they are caretaking.

A mystery and an island-I recall thinking this was a very exciting story (which would probably not be so exciting now). It also had one of my favorite constructs--the elder brother takes care of the younger sibling because the parents are out of the picture.
