When the stakes are high, she’s ready to shed more than her inhibitions

The Strip Series, Book 3

Dani’s been in love with Carter forever. But she’s nothing like the women he dates—glamorous, exciting, spotlight-ready. Instead, she’s stuck in the best-friend role and can’t seem to find a way out of it. Until a scheduling mix-up finds her enrolled in a strip-aerobics class. Now this buttoned-down wallflower is finding her wicked side—and liking it!

Carter can’t understand what’s happened to his best bud. She’s gone from sweet to sexy in ten seconds flat—and Carter’s lucky enough to be around for the ride of a lifetime. But he knows from past experience that relationships don’t last. He’s got to get things back on track before the most important friendship in his life is damaged forever.

Problem is, Dani has no intention of going back to being just friends. It’s about time someone challenged Carter’s assumptions about love and friendship—and Dani’s just the woman to do it!

Score Sheet Summary

It was my hankering to read a friends-to-lovers romance that led me to purchasing and reading Challenging Carter by Kate Davies. Carter Matthews and Dani Williams are best friends and have been together in business for the past 8 years. While Carter heads Outdoor Sports Equipment, Dani is the Financial Analyst of the company who constantly tries to get Carter to stick to the estimated budget for expenses.

Dani has always been in love with Carter and he has no clue. Dani is an introvert, who feels more comfortable working than socializing. It is Carter’s pestering about a Fitness Challenge that has Dani taking up strip aerobics that gives her that extra edge which starts driving Carter out of his ever loving mind.

The scenes of passion were of the steamy hot variety. The thing I loved most about this novella was the friendship between Carter and Dani and Carter’s ability to goof around and get Dani to lighten up. This was evident even in the most sensually charged scenes of the story and that is one reason why I loved Dani and Carter’s story.

The one thing that I did miss however was the lack of background story which I know is not possible most of the time when it comes to a novella. But a friends to lovers romance becomes that much more real if their past comes up and delivers those tidbits that makes the characters more appealing and give that extra bite of sexual tension that drives the reader to the very edge.

If you are looking for a short story to stick in between lengthier reads and if you love the friends to lovers trope, give Challenging Carter a go.

How can you not love a friends to lovers story? As one of my favorite romance plot devices, I knew within the first chapter that Challenging Carter was going to be a fast favorite. Friends since college Carter wanted Dani by his side when he opened his own business OSE a sporting goods company. While Dani has watched Carter date and bed many women over the years, the yearning she has to be with him become stronger every year but she’s hesitant because she doesn’t want to lose her best friend but she’s not sure if she can continue on without doing something.

I loved the easy camaraderie between Carter and Dani; it was so evident that these two know each other well with their barbs and the way they tease each other. When Carter institutes a Wellness Challenge at the office, he insists Dani join. Dani signs up for what she things is step aerobics but what turns out to be strip aerobics and with the class she begins to gain the self confidence she’s always lacked.

It was fun to watch the changes in Dani and when Carter sees exactly what Dani has been up to things change rather rapidly but it’s not without problems. I felt for Dani because she laid it all out there and I admire her for realizing she deserves everything and letting go when she doesn’t get it. While Carter was a little clueless, I do admire the grand gesture he made to ensure Dani understood exactly how he felt.

Although this is a novella, the rapid progression of the relationship was easy to understand given this couple’s history. Challenging Carter is an enjoyable and steamy story with best friends figuring out that sex doesn’t have to change everything.

Although the book was well written there was zero character development. I wanted to like this book I really did. And up until the last page it was a solid three stars. But when she said she wants his type because she wasn't glamorous, sexy, athletic and he replied look at you now... after her required 10 week fitness program... excuse me? So now she looks good? Are you kidding me? Ugh and she never stood up for herself. Everyone after they were together and he crashed her, she just let it happen. I just don't like stories where the characters are weak. This is a prime example of that. And the whole you're my type now.... no. Just no!

I bought this book from kobo for a reasonable price. Dani and Carter are immature and frustrating, dare I say it? Pain in the butt and irritating to say at least. I love the humor between them and the embarrassment pole dance from Carter for dani. Which I found very amusing. It was steamy and character driven. Overall I was fan girling and laughing, my emotions were all over the place when I read challenging Carter. I'm in love with this book. I highly recommend this book to my friends.

A little bit disappointed in this story. The writing was fine, however there was so much potential for a really great romance with plenty of depth and the book failed to deliver it. I don't mind a shorter story if it feels complete, but this novel could have used a lot more build-up.

Liked the trilogy of books (all short stories) in this series, but they were WAY too short. I would have really liked to get to know more about each couple.
