The book offers a strong selection of games, enhanced by colorful, well-chosen diagrams that clearly highlight weak squares, lines of attack, and other key positional features. One of its particularly thoughtful touches is the use of thematic pictograms at the start of each game, helping readers quickly grasp the main strategic ideas at play.
The main drawback, however, lies in the style of writing. At first glance, it seems aimed at a younger audience, yet it sometimes assumes a broader cultural knowledge than most children would possess. Moreover, how many kids can follow deep sidelines? In the game Spasski-Fischer, at move 32, the authors give a side variation consisting of 20 moves. While the analytical content is solid and instructive, the persistent attempts at humor — humorless in effect — tend more to distract from, and most of all to interrupt, the stronger and more valuable chess analysis. I would have preferred a deeper strategic focus for it is a chess book.
Overall, I would rate the book ⭐⭐⭐✰ out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (three and a half out of five stars): with a more refined writing style and a deeper focus on presenting instructive chess ideas, it could have come remarkably close to excellence. That said, for younger players seeking a lighter and visually guided introduction to strategic thinking, the book may still serve as an accessible and engaging resource.
