HEAR ME CRY is a dark chilling psychological thriller by E F Wharton. This novel deals with sensitive issues such as domestic abuse, miscarriage, gaslighting, child abduction, mental health and murder.

This story revolves around two main characters, Katie Kovacs is a literary agent married to Mark and Heather Parnell a girl who ran away from a commune as a teenager, now living as a nun. Heather has agreed to tell Katie her story.

This was an intricate read, with flashbacks and timelines. Once I got more into it, it read more smoothly.

The men in Katie and Heather’s life were both controlling and abusive. Katie’s husband became unstable and took her son away from her. Heather ran from a commune with Jovano, and was involved in the death of three elderly people. She became the focus of a media storm. They name her, The Commune Killer, the serial killer.

How much information will Heather reveal to Katie about her past life?

This novel was well written with well- developed characters and an engaging emotional story that was captivating and full of mystery and secrets.

Many thanks to the author and The Reviewer Request Group (FB) for my digital copy.

Have a clear head when starting this as it is character and time line rich and you need to get who and where straight in your mind from the offset
Once you do you are involved in a tale of secrets, guilt and revenge and not from who you might at first imagine
I loved the descriptions of life in the 70’s, Christmas as was and life in general (well the good parts ) and also the bits about working in the publishing industry, also as always is with this author the observational writing is spot on
There is a full on ending and one I hadn’t guessed and was a shocker!
As say give yourself good reading time and a clear head to make sure you get everything worked out as you begin this story and you will enjoy what you find

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.

Trigger warnings: Domestic/mental abuse, physical abuse, gaslighting, murder, serial killer.
Her Me Cry is my first read by Eileen Wharton and I fount it a harrowing but also beautifully written read. The two main POVs are Katie and Heather. Katie is married to Mark who owns the business she works for and Heather - who after fleeing a troubled past, lives as a nun.
Katie's husband became controlling and abusive towards her shortly after they got married and also took her beloved sin away from her as part of his abuse towards her. Heather has a dark past and past events made her known as "The Convent Killer". The two women's lives become entangled, but will Heather tell Katie about her own past and the murders that took place and if she does can Katie trust or believe her?
Alongside the two women we see flashbacks relating to a young girl who gets taken whilst on holiday with her family. The twists are quite subtle throughout the book and the shock ending was fantastic. It did take me about 1/3 of the book to get my head fully around the plot and characters but once I got my bearings the story flowed really well.

Massive thank you to @zooloosbooktours for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

I couldn’t put it down - the different narrators and time lines, along with the short chapters, really helped to keep the tension humming right until the final reveal. Although there was a lot to keep in mind, the rhythm settled quite quickly and it easy to become engrossed in the stories of Heather and Katie, and try to figure out how they meshed together.

I did have a partial inkling of what the twist might be, but I didn’t guess all of it, and I liked how it ended. For a short book, this really crammed in a heck of a story. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone who likes fast paced thrillers with a twist at the end, and an unreliable narrator.

Beautifully written. From the outset there is something not quite right but it is hard to put your finger on it and as the book dots between Heather and Katie's points of view the horrific truth begins to reveal itself.
Many subjects are covered, from domestic abuse and gaslighting to mental health crises and more- all sensitively portrayed and integral to the plot.
I can't discuss the ending without ruining the book but suffice to say that even if you have an inkling the revelations are still breathtaking.

This is quite a complex read. There are two main characters, Katie Kovacs who works in a literary agency and is married to Mark, the owner of the company and Heather Parnell a girl who ran away from a commune in her teens and is now living as a nun and has agreed to tell Katie her story. Alongside this there are flashbacks to a young girl who is snatched by a cruel and evil man when on holiday with her family. I must admit that it took me a while to get my head straight around the various characters and timelines so I was about 25% into the book before it flowed well for me. From then on I was hooked.

Briefly, both Heather and Katie are living with controlling men. After they married Katie’s husband became mentally and physically abusive culminating in him taking her son away from her. When Heather ran from the commune with Jovano they killed two men and later moved in with an elderly woman who also died eventually leading to Heather becoming notorious as a serial killer. Will Heather reveal the truth to Katie about her life and the murders?

This was quite a harrowing read at times, particularly the physical abuse of the young girl who was snatched, as well as the mental abuse both women suffered. Although both women started off being very likeable as time went on I began to find them both rather weak as they allowed the men in their lives to control them. Some good twists and turns and a shocking revelation at the end made for a good but emotional read.

This story focuses around Katie and Heather. One is a young woman working at a publishing agency, who ends up marrying, and suffering as a result.
The other is Heather who was snatched as a young child and suffered as a result, a lot of emotional and physical abuse that wasn't an easy read at times, but never explicitly told.
I found it hard to get my head around the characters, who was who and in what place. Once I'd figured it all out, I found it an impossible book to put down as I needed to know the truth.
I found Katie quite irritating at times and thought perhaps she would have had more opportunity in the times we live in now, to fight back and escape.
I had less sympathy for Heather as time passed, and couldn't believe she'd be so blind to her companion and allow what happened.
The story really picks up pace in the final quarter and there is a big twist.

4.5* rounded up

What the hell have I just read?? I’ve read Eileen Wharton’s Blanket of Blood before and thoroughly enjoy the dark police procedural. But this, Hear My Cry is another level of twisted darkness from Wharton!!!

I loved the different narratives and forms of communication. Hearing what was inside Heather and Katie’s heads mixed with the correspondence between the two made interesting readings. The discussion Heather had about Daddy Long Legs made me shudder. These creatures are in my strange warped logic flying spiders so talking about them sent shivers down my spine. But the more I read of Heather’s experience the more I was chilled. Daddy Long Legs were just the start of her chilling narrative, bejeezus I didn’t know what to think!

The chapters of regression therapy in the mid 70s are traumatic. Whoever is subjected to this oof’s control and capture I felt so sorry for. These chapters were difficult to read and that’s before I had to translate the oof’s dialect! The captor’s voice chilled me!

The more I read of Katie’s narrative the more I questioned her. Was she the reliable narrator I thought she was at the beginning? Dreamy Mark does admittedly become a despicable example of a human being. Is Katie’s narrative a result of this or is there more to her? But what ensued was horrific.

Each chapter ends with a question, intentional or not. But this reader had questions about what she’d just read and it kept her reading; answers were needed!!!

Wharton has written a tense sinister thriller which left me reeling as the story went on. Only on reading the final chapter did all the pieces slot into place. This is a startling and brilliantly dark read that I couldn’t get enough of!

TRIGGER WARNING: physical and emotional abuse, animal cruelty, miscarriage, severe mental health issues
Katie is a literary agent looking for the next bestseller. But she has her own book to write about the notorious nun Heather the Commune Killer who has been writing to her. Katie also has her own issues from the past to contend with...
Hear Me Cry is a multiple timeline and perspective novel around two womens' lives. There are some big and disturbing issues discussed which I did find upsetting at times.
The book is relentless in absorbing us in the lives of Katie and Heather. Katie's marriage was full of abuse and her child was taken from her. Now she returns to the marital home but is haunted by the ghosts of the past. Heather portrays herself as an innocent victim, trying to survive while others control her and limit her choices. I felt emotionally invested in both sets of experiences as well as the third perspective of a kidnap victim (we don't see where this fits in until the very end).
The tone of the book was very dark and atmopspheric. There are spooky and sinister elements as well as overtly violent and oppressive behaviour. This makes the book hard to read at times and difficult to 'enjoy' but I was completely immersed in the plot and characters. The ending made total sense yet was not at all what I expected. It drew together all of the plot strands and made me re-evaluate my impressions of the characters and plot.
Hear Me Cry is gripping but disturbing.

Hanging my head in shame I have to admit that I have never read one of the author’s books before. Even though I have a few of them on my moutain pile! After reading this beauty I am wishing I had read one sooner! Hear Me Cry is exactly what a psychological thriller is all about. I was totally wrapped up in the world of Heather and Katie has we follow a story with chapters alternating between them.

With a shit hot twist this book has left my head spinning…..how the hell did I not see that coming! So, so clever! It has totally blown me away. The author drip feeds you information, keeping you captiavated and wanting to know more. With some rather uncomfortable moments that will make you squirm. Yes the thriller side of it is DARK……which I loved you know me, the darker the better. this story is twisted to say the least. But at the same time making you feel empathy with the characters.

I particularly loved the scences set in the past….where the author weaves a story a full on edge of your seat reading which takes you on a rollercoaster ride. With twists and turns and loads of OMG moments. I lost track of how many times I forgot to breath while reading this. It is absolutely brilliant.

Be prepared not to put it down until the very last page Hear Me Cry is simply mind blowing. I cannot recommend it enough. Giving it all the stars.

Heather Parnell runs away from a commune back in the 1970’s after her father dies. When she ends up being involved in murders when trying to flee and also afterwards, she becomes known as The Commune Killer.

Katie Kovacs is a literary agent and was married to a controlling man. He didn’t like the love and attention Katie gave to their six year old son, Oliver. Katie believes her husband, Mark was involved in Oliver’s disappearance.

This story did take me a while to get in to but it did pick up for me. The story is quite creepy at times and left me with goosebumps. It took some time to realise what was going on in the story due to the many twists along the way. My heart went out to the different characters and I ended up finding the book quite sad.

My thanks to Red Dragon Publishing and Zooloo’s Book Tours for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

The novel involves two main characters, Katie and Heather. Katie is a literary agent who has persuaded Heather (who is now a nun) to tell her intriguing story of why she became known as The Commune Killer. What happened to Heather and why was she involved in the murders? At the same time, Katie has her own issues to deal with.

I did find it difficult to get into the book at the beginning as it flips from each character and to different time frames. Once I got into the flow though, I found it gripping. I love the way Eileen left what I call 'danglers' at the end of the chapters to hook me in and needing to find out what happens next and indeed what happened before.

A moving book that deals with both mental and physical abuse and suffering though in a sensitive way. A perfect book for these darker nights.

I really enjoyed this book. There were times when the constant jumping backwards and forwards was a bit confusing. But I think that was the intent. The writing was really strong. I enjoyed so much of the descriptions and vernacular. The characters were strong. I will admit that at times I felt like there were too many of aspects of the female victim to the point of feeling like it was beating a dead horse. But again, I wonder how much of that was intentional.

I won't give the ending away, but I was confused, then surprised, and then a tiny bit disappointed. As a whole, it was a good read. It kept me wanting more and itching to get back to my book. So much that I finished it in two sittings. I'd definitely read it again.

Hear Me Cry

A deeply dark and chilling book which held me completely transfixed.
The subject matter is brave and sensitively handled with no topic too taboo. Such areas as domestic abuse, miscarriage, gaslighting, child abduction, mental health and murder are all interlinked and intertwined into this riveting tale.
There were times when I was unsettled and did not know what was reality and what wasn’t but this was part of the blurred uncertainties and mystery of the story. There were also a number of shocks and twists, but I will not give any spoilers.
I was left feeling only fairly sure what actually happened but also impressed with the ingenuity of the story and that is had me tricked and led astray so easily. A definite recommend from me.

It was well written with well developed characters and an engaging story that was compelling and full of mystery and secrets. I was hooked right from the start and it didn't let me go until the end.
Twisty, atmospheric and unpredictable it makes for a truly gripping read that you will think about long after its finished. I really enjoyed it.

Completely immersed myself in this one. A tangled story of two women: Heather and Katie. Their traumatic stories are woven cleverly into one another and span decades. Not always easy to follow as there are many threads as we transport from present day to their distance pasts. The end is not something you’ll ever be able to see coming.

A very dark series of stories intertwined. Katie is writing Heather's troubled story but also has her own story to tell. It's a little confusing sorting out the stories at the beginning. There are plenty of secrets revealed as the mysteries unravel.
