He wants a second chance. I want revenge… And I'll do anything to get it.
Two years ago I left Hawaii with a broken heart and a sunburn, and never thought I’d go back.
Then I got the invitation to my best friend’s wedding. She’s marrying the surfing world’s biggest dreamboat. And she wants me as her maid of honor.
There are two big problems: The wedding is in Hawaii The best man is the gorgeous tour guide who broke my heart
I never want to see Bones Keakealani again. In fact, I wish a piano would fall on his head. But he doesn’t feel the same way about me. He’s insisting he deserves another chance. He promises he has a good reason for breaking my heart, but it will take more than promises for me to forget my heartbreak or my desire for revenge.
I plan to drive him crazy with my rich, handsome (and fake) wedding date.
Because even though the sexy Hawaiian is every bit as tempting as I remembered, the last thing I want with him is another try.

Penny and BFF Lou (Try Easy, book 1) land in Hawaii after saving for months to get there. Penny’s cousin Henry (Try Right, book 3), is a stunt man working in film/TV on the island. At first Penny is not impressed, until she sees Bones. Penny is immediately attracted to Bones and feels he’s going to change her world. Likewise, Bones knows in his heart that Penny is his soulmate that the aunties predicted would come into his life.
Try Over is a slow burn romance that takes place over a couple of years. The story begins with Bones and Penny falling in love as he shows her the beauty of his island. They connect instantly, and the story has a soulmate/meant-to-be vibe, which normally isn’t my thing. However, because they fit together so well, it didn’t bother me that they fell for one another so quickly. The author uses wonderful detailed descriptions, painting a lovely scene of Hawaii. It felt like I was there, and I enjoyed the narration.
Because Bones believes in the Hawaiian traditions, he seeks the counsel of the island elder, who tells him something, causing him to push Penny away. Penny leaves Hawaii angry and heartbroken. Fast forward two years later, Penny is living in New York City teaching dance lessons. In order to save enough money to attend Lou’s wedding in Hawaii, Penny gives private dance lessons to a young girl, and becomes friendly with the father, Heath. He agrees to go to Hawaii with Penny to help her make Bones jealous.
While I felt the reason for Bones sending Penny away and breaking her heart was weak, I can understand his panic and why he did it. But what then bothered me for much of the second half is the couple’s inability to communicate. Seriously… all it would have taken is some honesty, and they wouldn’t have continued to hurt for so long. Even once they are in the same place, it continues until nearly the end. I also didn’t love that Penny is in Hawaii with one man while loving another. There are no promises between Penny and Heath, but it still feels a bit like cheating and didn’t sit right with me.
Narration: The story is shared via the third person alternating POVs Penny and Bones, with Kaleo Griffith performing Bones’s POV and Henriette Zoutomou performing Penny’s POVs. Both alter dialogue based on gender and ethnicity. Each narrator gives Bones and the other native Hawaiians an “islander” accent and use local lingo, but I don’t know how authentic it is. I felt KG’s accent was more consistent than HZ’s. KG’s male narrator has no distinguishing accent even though it is Bones’s POV. KG slightly alters his voice for female parts, enough to make dialogue effectively feminine sounding. HG also performed a neutral narrator. Both the narrator and Penny’s dialogue is light and young sounding, fitting of Penny’s optimistic views. HG also subtly changes the voice to fit Penny’s darker moods. She deepens effectively for male dialogue. Both infuse some emotion into their performances.
Overall, I enjoyed Try Over and returning to Hawaii. I liked seeing Bones and Penny fall in love, and it was great to see the couple work things out. I also really liked catching up the other couples.

(audiobook) I keep saying that I’m tired of instalove, because it offers no time for seduction and building of a relationship beyond the physical. However, although this book is pure instalove–they confess their love for each other less than a week after meeting–I found out that it worked. Probably because they’re soulmates. It’s explained many times that they’re bound to end up together, that they’re made for each other. And I thought this tiny somewhat magical touch worked well with the setting and the story.
Though I loved Bones, I had a hard time appreciating Penny. She’s lively and smart, but she makes decisions that made me cringe. For instance, when she falls for Bones, she’s already in a relationship, but she doesn’t care because she wants Bones. I won’t give any other example, as I don’t want to spoil too much of the story, but let’s just say she does a few other cringey things.
Bones was way more loveable. He’s huge and scary, and uses those attributes in his job. But he also has a big heart, and lots of love for his culture. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t do dumb things at times–which I won’t spoil at all. But he knows how to make amends, and understands the meaning of sacrifice.
As a second chance romance, the book is in two parts–first meeting, and reunion. The before part is a fun and sexy vacation fling, with a sad ending. The after part is a twisted version of enemies to lovers–Penny claims that she hates Bones after what happened the first time, but even she doesn’t believe it. And Bones is definitely a lovesick puppy. Funnily enough, that’s when the seduction takes place. That’s when they learn everything about each other and really fall in love. I loved that.
It was also great to see again characters from previous books. The first part of the story is concomitant to Keoni and Lou’s book, while the second part happens when they get married. But we also see a lot of Henry and Claudia, as Penny is Henry’s cousin, and we get a glimpse of Declan and Pearl. Weddings are a great way to reunite people, right?
As usual in this series, the Hawaiian culture is predominant. I thought Bones represented the intersection between the past and the present–traditions mean everything to him, but he also knows the value of the islands for outsiders, and how to make money out of it. Or how to keep outsiders from doing the same.
The narration wasn’t bad, but I found both narrators sounded too neutral when reading, while they expressed a lot during conversations. As such, the pace wasn’t great, though it was still a very good audiobook. A great addition to the series.
Quickie
- Series: Aloha #4 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #retro romance #second chance romance #multicultural relationship #instalove - Triggers: past death, cheating (technically, but not between the main characters) - Main couple: Penny Longchamp & Bones Keakealani - Hotness: 4/5 - Romance: 5/5 - + the ring incident was both cute and hilarious - – second conflict came out of the blue and made little sense, in my opinion
3.75 Stars! Such a cute second chance romance set against the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii!
(Audio Review) Try Over is book 4 in the Aloha Series and here we finally get Bones’ and Penny's story! We were first introduced to them and got glimpses of their story from the previous books in the series. And so, it was great to finally see their story unfold and for them to finally get their own happy ending.
When Penny and Bones first meet, there is instant chemistry and attraction, but circumstances stand in their way of being together. And so, when Penny comes back to Hawaii 2 years later as the maid of honour (and Bones as the best man) for the wedding of her best friend Lou, and his cousin/best friend Keoni, can they finally get their HEA?
Although the attraction to each other was there, they had so much to overcome as they both were on different paths in life and lived in different cities.
Overall, Jill Brashear’s writing flowed well, and I loved the beautiful Hawaiian setting. This gave me all the feels!
Narrated by Kaleo Griffith & Henriette Zoutomou, both narrators were great at setting the scene and bringing the characters and story to life. Excellent narration!
I love Jill Brashear! She writes such unique romances, and I do adore her 1960's throwback "Aloha" series. These ones are very special. Try Over is book 4 in the series, and follows Penny (Henry, from book 3's cousin) when she first visits and falls for Bones, and then a few years later when she returns for her friend's wedding... the friend who stayed behind when she left the first time.
Penny thought she and Bones had fallen in love during that brief holiday, and she was ready to change her life and stay, just like her friend was doing... but he broke her heart and told her he didn't love her and she needed to go home - he only did flings with tourists. Meanwhile, he was listening to the advice of an elder who knew future things (not quite a psychic), but things didn't seem to be quite going the way she promised.
Fast forward the 2 years when Penny returns for the wedding and doesn't even want to set eyes on Bones, who happens to be the best man - so they can't avoid each other. Penny tries to do her best to keep out of his path, spending more time with her cousin, but - well, I'm sure everyone knows how a second chance romance is going to turn out, but with Jill Brashear being the brilliant author she is, she takes us through a very beautiful and loopy rollercoaster with a lot of unexpected twists to get us to the end, and it's worth every tense moment to get there.
I highly recommend this book - especially the audio version! Narrated by Henriette Zoutomou, who is a perfect fit for Penny, and Kaleo Griffith, with an excellent Hawaiian voice, an exact match for who I would expect to hear as Bones, you can't go wrong with this audiobook!!
I received an advance listen copy from the author and Home Cooked Books Promotions, and this is my honest feedback.
Try Over Aloha Series #4 By Jill Brashear Narrated by Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zoutomou
Bones & Penny. Our couple that has incredible chemistry and when they finally make a go of it, Bones breaks her heart. Now two years later, Penny returns to Hawaii for her best friend's wedding, and is ready to seek her revenge. Will she be able to do it or will her feelings take over? Will Bones care or even want her back? This is a wonderful story of second chances. First off, Hawaii is a beautiful setting, and it only makes me want to go back! All the snorkeling and diving is enough to keep me on the hook. Bones is the man! But he takes bad advice, at least I think it was. Penny has made her new life, but the niggling in the back of her mind has never let Bones go. The story is packed with good friends, gorgeous scenery, the evil villain and a romance that had me pulling for them the entire time! I didn't not read the other books in the series, but this could stand alone. It's a wonderful escape, almost like a mini vacation!
Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zoutomou tell this story with a fantastic narration. Full of the emotional pulls and angst without being over the top, this made for total entertainment, tugging the heart strings and making me happy.
Jill Brashear has done it again! Try Over is book four in Jill Brashear’s Aloha series. Jill transports readers back to Hawaii in 1968 for Bones & Penny’s HEA. Jill blends Hawaiian culture, complex characters, and loads of island magic in a beautiful love story. Penny and Bones meet and have instant chemistry. I love that Jill takes the insta-love trope and gives it depth and substance. This tear-jerker made my heart so happy!
Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zoutomou are new-to-me narrators and I really enjoyed their performances. Kaleo’s portrayal of Bones was charming, sweet, and swoon-worthy. Henriette Zoutomou brings Penny’s story to life with a delightful and emotional narration. Kaleo and Henriette’s narration styles and pacing complement each other nicely; the story flowed beautifully.
This is the fourth and last book in the Aloha Series. This is a great addition to the series. I loved Bones and Penny's second chance to love. In this installment, we are back to Hawaii for the wedding of Lou and Keoni (Try Easy, book 1). I liked this setting, and the magnificent scenery. Their story is beautifully written, emotional, passionate, and engaging. Great narration from Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zoutomou. I enjoyed it. #HomeCookedBooks
Love love love books that take place in Hawaii. Jill does an amazing job sharing cultural information around the traditions, people and land.
Penny and Bones are instantly attracted to one another from the start. They have an easy and fun relationship that they know is short lived due to their living arrangements. However they want to make the best of the time they have together….and do they ever!!
But with every happy love story comes challenges and real life struggles - differing cultures, family acceptance, living locations, along with compromising on so many other things.
There is intense passion, drama, misunderstandings but these two make this second chance romance work.
I enjoyed seeing the characters from the other books and learning where they are in their lives.
Love this series!
Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zoutomou did a fantastic job with their performance. The emotion and personality they brought to each character was perfect. I’ve read/enjoyed the book but also enjoyed the audiobook and how the amazing narrators bring these characters to life.
At the beginning, Try Over rolls romantically along at a smooth, easy pace. Everything is going so perfectly we are sure the HEA is right around the corner and can’t even image where any conflict could come in. Penny and best friend Lou have come to Hawaii for a vacation. The biggest, best-looking man she’s ever seen (and the not-too-shabby guy with him) just happen to be at the airport to greet Penny and Lou since Penny’s cousin Henry has to work. So far so good. The physical attraction between Penny and Bones is instant, but as they spend time together she sees he is not only big and strong (and handsome, don’t forget handsome) but also good and kind and sometimes easily embarrassed. If soulmates is a thing, these two are it. But Hawaiian tradition and respect are important to Bones, and just when Penny thinks her new address is going to end in Hawaii Bones consults an elder and realizes he can’t be with Penny. She leaves, heartbroken and bitter.
The next time we meet up with them is two years later, just before Lou and Keoni’s wedding. Everybody has moved on (or gotten together – see Lou/Keoni/wedding). Well, almost everybody. Turns out Penny brought back a lot more baggage than just that pink Samsonite suitcase of hers. When she learns he is to be best man to her maid of honor Penny vows to make Bones pay for her broken heart, and the best way she can think of to do that is to bring the most handsome, charming, fantastic wedding date with her. Even if it’s a fake date. And away we go. There’s a lot of miscommunication and a lot of no communication. For soulmates they sure take a long time to honestly talk things out.
Bones makes mistakes and has preconceived ideas that get him into trouble, but bottom line he’s a big, lovable guy. Penny is a bit harder to like. Her initial reaction to Hawaii was negative; she’s kind of the half-empty glass to Bones’ half-full. He found her quick mood change and temper a little appealing – like Pele – but it wore on me at times. She had a boyfriend but he became disposable once she met Bones. The “find your true love and realize you’re with the wrong person” trope is a good one but Penny came across more like why can’t I have fun, I’m done with my boyfriend anyway.” Eeeww. Also not cool the way she bluntly told Lou that she didn’t need to honor the fact she had a boyfriend, either: “he’s a jerk.” Ethics and moral compass just a little skewed for me. But I do love second chance romances and this was a good one. The twists and turns and confusion and humor – and love – made for a good story.
As an audiobook Try Over is perfect. The POV switches between Penny and Bones, and both Henriette Zoutomou and Kaleo Griffith do an excellent job narrating, giving believable performances of both characters. I don’t know if the accents and language are authentic but they feel as if they are and add much to the story. Henriette Zoutomou and Kaleo Griffith also do a marvelous job setting the scene and describing the lush Hawaiian environment, people, traditions and events. A very enjoyable listen. A new-to-me author and new-to-me narrators and all three will go on my to read/to listen lists. I was given a free audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Such a great series and I'm a little sad this is the last book! I loved Bones and Penny's love story. It was so heartfelt and emotional. It was angsty without being over done and their struggles were real and relatable. This book brought back so many memories for me, so I was extra emotional about it. It was very easy for me to relate to Penny in relation to dating a local boy with me originally being from the mainland. His family doesn't approve of him with an haole and I think this book hit me harder because I knew exactly how Penny felt. This story left me very nostalgic and a little homesick for the good old days of growing up in Hawaii. It was written so beautifully and descriptively that I could easily picture everything and knew the places mentioned. I liked that so much of the culture of the islands was portrayed as well. While this can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone, it will give spoilers if you haven't read the first three books yet as multiple past characters make appearances. It was fun getting to catch up with the couples from the earlier stories and seeing where they are now. This is a sweet and charming love story that will warm your heart and make you swoon. It's entertaining and engaging and very well written. I was delighted to read it and I'm so happy that I got to go on this journey with Bones and Penny. I would highly recommend Try Over!
Being that this was my first time reading one of Jill’s amazing stories I actually missed out on reading the first few books in the series and man am I so sad about that , no worries though I will definitely be going back to do just that . That being said , not for one second did that how much I absolutely loved every single moment of Penny and Bones’s emotional rollercoaster of a journey . In fact I was pretty much on the edge of my seat from start to finish. There were moments I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest , others of have a huge smile on my face and some I actually found myself crying . It’s the type of story that has the ability to grab onto all your emotions so fast and so completely and pull at your heartstrings in ways you definitely will not be expecting. It’s not often I come across a author or a book / series that holds my attention quite the way Try over did and I read a Ton of romance. There really are no perfect words to express what a fantastic job Jill has done with this story so pick it up and experience all its perfection for yourself
Try Over is the fourth book in the Aloha series and is the second chance, insta-lust story of Bones and Penny. When Boned and Penny first meet their connection, attraction and chemistry is instant, but it wasn’t meant to be, and Penny left Hawaii heartbroken. Two years later, Penny goes back to Hawaii to stand as Maid of Honour at her best friend’s wedding, only Lou is marrying Keoni, Bones’ cousin/best friend making Bones the Best Man for the big day. It was clear that instant chemistry was still present two years down the line, they just need to take time to unpack the past, overcome the hurt and the fact they live different lives in different cities and realise that what they have is written in the stars. New to me narrators Kaleo Griffith and Henriette Zouotmou bring Bones and Penny to life in the most brilliant way. They did an amazing job at breathing life into the story and transporting us readers to the tropical shores of Hawaii. If you love a second chance, insta-lust romance between an island surfer guy and a city girl then this is the audiobook for you.
Try Over is book #4 in the Aloha Series, Penny and Bones' story. Penny and her friend Lou take a vacation to Hawaii to visit her cousin Henry. She's greeted at the airport by Bones and she's captivated by his warrior looks. They spend the week getting to know each other and hearts get involved. But Penny wants to travel the world and Bones sees no reason to ever leave the island. When Penny has to return for her friend Lou's wedding as the Maid of Honor, she knows that Bones is the Best Man, but is she ready to see him again...and keep her heart safe. She's had 2 years to shut down her feelings but is that enough? The chemistry is great between the characters and the HEA is heartstopping!
I had the audiobook version and the narration was superb. The narrators were pretty new to me. Kaleo Griffith was great as Bones. Henrietta Zoutomou is new to me and I just loved her as Penny. Great job by both.
Try over is book 4 in the Aloha series by Jill Brashear. The story follows penny, who falls for Bones, while on holiday in Hawaii. I loved Penny's and Bones's chemistry and I wanted them to have their happy ever after. Jill's storytelling is brilliant and the setting for the novel in the 1960's is perfect. I kept trying to put off reading try over as I knew it was the final book in the series and I didn't want it to end. Jill has done it again with another brilliantly written romance novel with the right amount of spice. I truly recommend try over and the rest of the Aloha series. I can't wait to read more of Jill's books. ❤️I was gifted a copy of the book from the author in exchange for a honest review.
"No other woman could compare to the memory of Penny."
This was an enjoyable second chance romance and I liked both main characters. It's set in Hawaii in 1968. I love retro-romances, especially those set in the late 60s to mid 70s. Since I've never been to Hawaii, I don't know how accurate the descriptions are but I felt like I could really see the place.
There isn't a bunch of action and it's not really angst-y. The book mostly focuses on the love story, which was rather nice. Penny has returned to Hawaii for Lou and Keoni's wedding. They are the couple from the first book in the series. I haven't read it and yet I was easily able to follow along. This book is fun and I plan to read others in this series.
What can I say. A bittersweet ending to this amazing series. Bitter because i know it’s the last book in the aloha series. Sweet because reading about penny and bones relationship was exactly what we needed after reading Lou and Keioni’s story. I know we all wanted to know where Bones and Penny stood. I love how the story develops. So many interesting turns and I did find myself rooting for the other guy at the beginning of the story cuz let’s be honest who didn’t hate bones for hurting penny. I really enjoyed seeing Bones development and feelings as well. It is quite the emotional ride but it is worth the read. Jill is such and amazing author. Thank you for giving us the aloha series.

I am so excited to get Bones and Penny's story! I have been wondering what would happen to them since I read the first book, Try Easy. It was good to go back and see the beginning of Lou and Penny's trip to Hawaii from Bones's perspective, especially now that we know what happened to the other people involved. I have always liked Penny, but I never felt like I understood Bones. He doesn't say much in the other books, so his feelings and motives are hidden until we get to read his POV. I loved the way they got to their happy ending. I also enjoyed checking in with the other couples from the series, especially reading about Keoni and Lou's wedding.
A second chance romance that gives you all the feels. Classic boy meets girl, does something stupid (or noble?) loses girl, realizes his mistake and has to win her back. After being introduced to Bones and Penny in the previous books, we finally get to read their story and the trials and tribulations that always accompany two people on different paths in life that meet and have an indescribable connection. Beautiful scenery and great characters help create a wonderful and tumultuous story with a HEA. It was good to catch up with past characters and why I love interconnecting series. I was given an Advanced Reader Copy for my honest opinion.
Penny and Bones, the end of the series and the second chance you’ve been waiting for! Penny returns to Hawaii to celebrate the marriage of Lou and Keoni. It’s been two years since when Bones broke Penny’s heart. Tensions are high whenever Penny and Bones are near each other as they try to navigate being best man and maid of honor in their friends’ wedding. Enjoy reconnecting with the other couples from the series as you are transported back in time in picturesque and beautiful Hawaii and it’s traditions and culture. HEA guaranteed!
I received an advance reader copy of this story to give an honest review.
This is book 4 in Brashear's Aloha series and while I've read / listened to Brashear before, this is the first in the Aloha series I've had the pleasure to listen to. I really enjoyed this insta love romance. I loved the throwback to the 60's. The storyline took me on an emotional roller coaster, and I was captivated from the very start. Adding to all that already goodness is a great cast of characters and dual narration which for me is always a plus. This is Bones and Penny's story and one that won't disapoint!
This book was given to me for free at my request and I voluntarily provided this review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read
romance vacation. Penny is a young woman who had her heart broken by a man she met during her vacation in Hawaii Bones. but when she is back on the island for her best friend's wedding she sees him again and he is the best man at the wedding. Bones is a man living according to Hawaiian cultures, so when his culture tells him to end his relationship with Penny he obeys. but now she is back for her best friend's wedding and he has every intention of winning her back. Will Penny forgive Bones or will she move on...
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Finally time for Bones and Penny's story! We saw glimpses of their relationship through the other books in the series, but it was fun to see how their own story plays out. Penny and Bones had an immediate attraction, the chemistry between the two was unquestionable. There are some obstacles on their way to happiness, however, but I just wanted these two to be together! I have enjoyed each book in this series, the way they overlap, and the writing that makes you totally imagine yourself being in Hawaii with them. This final installment was a great read.
5 stars, 4 steamy kisses ARC COPY REVIEW Book #4 in the Aloha series
second chance, hawaii, vacation, the one that got away, revenge, fake dating, heartbreak, reunion, best friends wedding, best man, maid of honor, drama, series, dual pov,
What happens when you let the one that got away go after having such a strong connection you get a do-over? Only this time the one that got away is not going to play fair and is out for some sweet revenge for the heartbreak you caused. Will these two be able to try over or burn before their friends' wedding day?
I came in late to the party, since this was my first book by Jill and the fourth book in this series, yet it pulled me in from the first word! I had no idea the emotional journey I would be in for with these two, but anyone who knows me, knows I love a good emotional roller coaster. This one definitely took me on a ride! But it was so worth it, especially seeing Penny and Bones finally get their perfect HEA. Though it’s the last book in the series, it was the first for me, and I’m so excited to go back and read the rest!
This was a second chance love story. The author wrote both the first part of their love story and the second part into the book. This was a cute story. I liked Penny and Bones. The author did a good job of making us feel like we were right there in the time period and in the setting. I loved all the interesting information about Hawaii. The middle was a bit long and dragged for me. I enjoyed listening to these two characters journey back together. The audio narrators did a really good job. Their voices were exactly as I imagined the characters would sound like. I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This is book four and the final installment of the Aloha series. This is Bones and Penny's story. It is a beautifully written, emotional and heartfelt second chance romance that's entertaining and enjoyable to read. Bones and Penny are soulmates and watching them find their way back to each other and finally getting their HEA was very touching. I was drawn into their story from beginning to end. Highly recommend reading this book. I look forward to reading more from Brashear.

Try Over will take you on an adventure to Hawaii! Jill always does a wonderful job of transporting you to the location of the book and making you wish you were there. The chemistry between Penny and Bones is evident from the first time they meet. The story is so realistic by showing some of the trials people sometimes have to go through to be together and stronger in the end. Try Over is a must read! It’s sweet, steamy, witty and I’m ready to go on a trip to Hawaii.
This is the 4th book of the Aloha Series so I am very late to the party as I have no read the previous books. This is an amazing second chance love reunion for Penny and Bones and they have not seen each other for 2 years. Penny flies back to the perfect island of Hawaii to help with her best friends wedding. The telling of this tale is amazing and makes you wish you could be in Hawaii with Penny and Bones. An amazing 2nd chance love story
Penny and Bones’s love story will touch your heart, keep you listening until the end and pinning for them to find their way back to each other. He broke her heart years ago. Now she is back in Hawaii for her best friend wedding. She is the maid of honor and Bones is the best man. Can her revenge finally bring them together or their HEA is lost for them? Great audiobook with Kaleo Griffith and Henrietta Zoutomou do an amazing job with the deep emotions and the strong feelings in this story.
