Phil Bayly is an American author. CARPE SKI 'em, released in November of 2025, is his seventh novel in the Murder on Skis Mystery series. Bayly has been named a finalist for three American Fiction Awards and was awarded a silver medal at the CIPA Colorado Book Awards.

CARPE SKI 'em begins with a woman's fatal plummet from a chair lift at a ski resort in Colorado. Her husband's disappearance is poorly timed. But there are plenty of colorful characters in ski country who could attract suspicion.

Bayly's other MOS mysteries:

A SMALL MOUNTAIN MURDER (2024) begins with the disappearance of a ski industry executive while visiting a small ski hill in Wisconsin. The investigation crosses paths with a crusading newspaper journalist and someone who thinks the stakes are worth killing for.

THE MAN WHO HAD 9 LIVES (2023) is Bayly's fifth novel in the Murder on Skis Mystery series and has been named a finalist for two American Fiction Awards. The story begins with an avalanche and tumbles toward murder and mystery at a Colorado Ski Resort.

WITCH WINDOW (2022) takes off as two bicycle riders, on a hot summer day, find the body of a man dressed to go skiing. The investigation travels from New York to Vermont.

BACK DIRT (2021) was also named a finalist for the American Fiction Awards. The tale unfolds in the adirondacks of Upstate New York. A murder suspect from Colorado has surfaced there. And an archaeological dig for old bones at the Battle Ax Ski Resort finds fresh blood.

LOVING LUCY (2020) was shortlisted for the Murder and Mayhem Award. The story takes JC Snow from Albany, New York to the Snow Hat Ski Resort in Colorado. JC follows the manhunt for a New York state senator accused of murder, and a petty thief who may be more than police bargained for.

MURDER on SKIS (2019) tells the tale of Victims caught in the claws of the Grizzly Mountain Ski Resort in Montana. The discovery of a frozen body buried beneath a ski run leads to the re-examination of other deaths previously ruled 'accidental.' JC Snow and police explore whether there is a cold blooded killer in the red hot resort community.

A veteran of television and radio news in New York, Colorado, Wyoming and Pennsylvania, Bayly was born and raised in Evanston, Illinois. He now resides in Saratoga County, New York.

Another murder mystery, written by Phil Bayly..
Of course , it has to do with skiing!
This book exceeded my expectations. Phil has developed a great descriptive style as he continues the series. His commentary on the surroundings and the people hit the mark for drawing the reader in to the story. This might be a personal preference, but I am more engaged as a reader if I can feel I am in the narrative surrounded by the setting and the people.
Phil's use of factual information draws the reader closer as you desire to see the connection to the plot and outcome.
JC is drawn to a case in Vermont that seemly has little connection to the story but he weaves the threads of the story to connect the dots in a manner that appeals to non skiers too. Phil does a superb job in using the backdrop of Vermont to set the stage for the beginning and the end of the story. In between, the events in the capital district of NY and and Denver add to the the overlap that connects who the killer might be ...

The book is engaging throughout and keeps the reader guessing on who might be the "bad guy"
Witch Window is his best to date and I cannot wait until we see who JC Snow finds as the next victim!

Phil Bayly knows how to tell a story. Witch Window has a complex plot with enough subplots and twists to keep the pages turning. It's also full of local and historical details of New York State's Capital District region and neighboring Vermont. I learned so much about the area I recently began calling home. I'm a former TV reporter, so Bayly's main character, JC Snow, and his job as a TV reporter appeal to me, although not his bad boy jokes. Luckily, JC's girlfriend, Robin, rolls her eyes when JC and his photographer, BIP, go too far. By the last page, I was rolling my eyes at JC too. The three of them work as a team and with the police to track down a murderer. JC even sheds his tough veneer by the end of Witch Window, which was a nice touch. I look forward to his next murderous adventure. If you haven't read any of these Murder on Skis Mysteries, start now and catch up!

I think Phil is really starting to find his groove with his story telling and his character of JC Snow.
