Beautiful Insights into the Miracle of Living

As I’ve recently started working on proofreading for Project Gutenberg books, I have been reading a lot of poetry written 200-plus years ago. So, I thought I would check out a few contemporary poets offering their works on a book review site. I loved this little book of poems. As the subtitle states, these poems are about hope and the magic of living, and as the title states, ordinary miracles. If you're hoping for rhyming poems, these are not. However, the author creatively uses punctuation, line spacing, phrasing, and other language embellishments to distinguish her words from ordinary prose. Most poems are very short but pack a real punch. I like the ideas and themes explored here. These are truly inspirational and get you thinking. They help you appreciate the ordinary miracle that is living, no matter how difficult it is. Here's my favorite poem from the book:

THE HUMAN CONDITION

the real miracle
is how we still believe
in love after being
given a lifetime
full of reasons
not to.

Loved this little book of poems. If what I said above (or the poem example) resonates with you at all, check out this little gem!

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This was the first collection of poems I read from Elizabeth Wilder, and I enjoyed this collection of poems. I thought it was powerful to show how a collection of a few poems and stanzas can illustrate the power of the ordinary and how we can experience miracles in the ordinary. Throughout each of the poems, Wilder imparts that we should not take these ordinary miracles for granted. Even from the first page, Wilder clearly presents the central theme of the collection: “let me feel the ordinary miracle of being seen by a soul who knows" (pg. 1). All of the poems were excellent; ‘Wild Things’ and ‘Human Condition’ were among my favorites. This collection also reinforces the importance of being present so we remind ourselves to experience the power of the ordinary. The tone of the poems is hopeful, uplifting, and thoughtful and shows how poetry has the ability to take what is before us and how it can be powerful. I would recommend this collection of poems, and I look forward to reading more of Wilder’s poetry.

"Are You Listening? This Is The Way To Life -"

I am actually a little late in submitting my review of "Ordinary Miracles: Poems of Magic & Hope" because I kept reading it again and again. Each piece would speak to me a little differently on any given day. I love when poems can do that.

There are 5 poems that stood out for me and those are -
"Souls Who Know"
"Fragile Things"
"In Versus Of"
"The Truest Thing"
"Life Calling"

I work in Hospice and many of these pieces made me think of the work I do with the people I see and help care for, and that can be a rare thing. The very last lines of both "Souls Who Know" and "Fragile Things" really resonate with me because of that.

Thank You, Elizabeth, for allowing me to be a member of your ARC Team. I will be reading this book time and again.

All opinions are my own and given freely in gratitude for the ARC.

I absolutely love Wilder's voice and poetry. The descriptions are visceral and give the reader much to think about. Her images evoke mood and emotion in a unique way, and seem to speak especially to women, but also seem very important for men to experience. The poetry grants women power but does not aim to emasculate male readers, it is the human experience from a female eye.

‘A balm for the soul’

In a harsh world, we can all use some validation and a lot of inspiration. Even lives that may seem perfect to an outsider still have their moments of pain.

I also have ‘I Promise I Tried: Poetry for Losing & Finding Yourself’ and ‘Odd Little Experiments’.

I found the words truthful, and to the point. She confronts her own feelings of doubt and sees the postive side of life. I enjoyed this collection, very much.

Great poetry for a quick read. Book was much smaller than expected so I read through it quickly. What was there was great, but not quite what I had in mind. I think I just expected more.
