Cosier than I was expecting, to be honest.

Wanda seems to have settled down and opened up an apothecary. Staffed by Darcy. Okay then.

I'm not mad about it - I really like these two together and it was very feel-good vibes. The story of this issue was simple and easily dealt with, so I'll be curious about how the rest of the run goes.

Not 100% sold on it yet, but I did enjoy it and will keep an eye out for the next issue.

Scarlet Witch’s triumphant return to a solo book. The choice of font aligns it to Strange, the other magical Marvel title currently on the shelves.

The Emporium

Wanda has settled down and opened a magic store as a place of help and shelter. Soon her first problem comes tumbling over the door step when a girl named Jarnette reports about a town under magical posession. The story is really intruiging yet cozy at the same time. Wanda made peace with herself which certainly doesn't weaken her powers. Her spells kinda covered the fact that the problem at hand wasn't a problem at all (Instead it got solved anti-climacticly). I really enjoyed the whole "magical store" make up of the story (and the comic issue itself) and the art style is well done. Especially the coloring and the magical hair effect - just wow! Can't wait for the next issue. 4/5

I love Wanda! After loving the short lived 2015 comic run. This one is another welcome addition. Nice to see Wanda NOT tortured and sad. But a hero with her darker Romani features on full display!

The last panel has me so hooked for what's to come.
But honestly, could read hours of Wanda in a cosy shop and not having to go through something traumatic.

Wasn't sure what to expect but pleasantly suprised. Nothing to over the top in terms of the scale of the enemy but still an interesting villain.

Ending was good and I look forward to #2

gorgeous cover, her hair is the beginning of that cosmic pattern, so pretty
her rings, the costume mwah chef's kiss
her tights have moon on the top
green eyed wanda in this one

"how nice for you." so pretty<3 also finally romani wanda

sooo wanda is working somewhere, very aesthetic btw, library, wood, books, miam, aaand for some reason darcy seems to be her coworker

look at her changing outfits mid-walking -down the stairs via magic

"a broken man intent on mutating people into amphibious horrors. when your crib was a mad scinetist's incubator , you dislike such things. my life's been a roller coaster. sometimes strange. often painful. but im excited to lay new track. this shop. this town. the last door." so we;re setting the scene for wanda's character, where is she currently for our story
mcu speaking this comes out after the doctor strange movie but i imagine this will have nothing to do with where we find her in that universe

"with your help, of course." mmm will they have us ship those two? i mean, look at them, that's flirty on wanda's side

PIETRO? this had me slap my mouth ngl
always (well, depends, most times) a pleasure to see him

"that's my brother. always good to see you, pietro. how's my niece?" we had the same reaction, wanda

aw luna, his daughter is with her mother in space (lol)

i like how they have portrayed the maximoff sibling, at least appearance wise till now, we'll talk about the characterism later on when we'll see what they did with them for this one

"so he's fast... and a lot. quite. but trust me. he'll be -- back." ah so charming
he has gemini energy, mercurial charm effortless appearing but he cares

"balancing past mistakes. darkness held me back for too long. i fought. i helped... but how many people suffered because i didnt reckon with myself sooner?
martyrdom is a sorry answer.
thar's not this. im going big. making it so no one slips through the cracks again."

"a millisecond of truth before you make the face you want people to see." of course, could ever pietro straight up agree with his sister?

"easy, pietro.
well. you're ;ying about her, even if by omission. you have your own tell. when you speak, you're being cryptic." very wanda indeed, she's a witch after all, the mystic is in her nature, right?

"a customer? how unexpected.
of sorts. it's like i told you. when someone has nowhere else to go..." it's giving those 'witches' that helped helpless women kill their abusing husbands

"if your need is great and your hope is gone, there you will meet the scarlet witch" INCREDIBLE DESIGN, wallpaper material fr

"quicksilver. god of speed and thief of gravity. i caught you.
thanks. but i dont need a catch... i need clarity."

"this is magic , isnt it?
indeed, jarnette. magic made to help you. i thought i might offer you an ear, some safety... and some tea."

"you've come through the hast door. a portal of my own creation. it appears only to those in the direst of need. those who feel thay have no one left. for those souls on the brink, the last door can open from any doorway. and bring you here. for help. free of charge. so... tell me what troubles you. and know , no matter what... you will be believed. you dont know how it feels to hear that."
shes been through so much and she's so collected while she's narrating such infuriating ongoing tragedy

"jarnette-- i noticed your worry stone. may i ask where it came from?
this? my father gave it to me. he was a miner. grew up around here, actually.
intriguing. ive been all over this nad many worlds. rewritten reality itself. and yet, even rough, this stone resistsme. my spells bemd around it, like oil in water."
kinda weird for her to not have met resistance to her magic before

"i cannot influence it. not directly... this should not be. if your stone is opaqueto magic, id bet it's what's protected you from corruption. whether he knows it or not, day's power may be rooted in spells."
ah look at her magic when she leaves, beautiful

"mayor day sends his regrds.
as do i." go be a badass girl

"" lol, he thinks he can achieve such goal? again, lol

"why come all the way to italy?
because a personal fiefdom, should be in paradise, not pughkeepsie. because i can. and there's nothing you or your tiara can do to save this town.
never speak ill of a tiara. but as for saving this place..."
the villain's good
but look at her hand!!!1!!1

"family has powre, day. you were a fool to test it. and a bigger fool to test me."
god i love her, icon

"yes. well. you'll forgive me if i dont kneel!
you wont have ot. but your actions come at a cost. just like everyone else's.
please. you're not special, witch. they all think they can resist... until they're swallowing their own tongues at my slightest whisper. and the best part? deep down, everyone wants to be told what to do. just like you. just like you want... to remember.
wha- what?
did i mumble, woman?"
so we're indirectly talking about free will and how we indeed have a tricky time navigating it but after all it's vital to a truly fulfilling life
and then actions and consequences and how we are all susceptible to malintented people who capitalise on out insecurities and wrong-doings and guilt
and they build their empires on that, of course we like to believe that that makes such empires episfalh, sathra but it's a very much existing problem, always has been

aaaand we take a look at wanda's past, it is indeed her achilles' heel
"you dare talk to me about cost? about consequences? consequence are the latticework of your life. without them, who are you?"
sis has a point
well written
it is part of her, and the question he's posing is reasonable but i dont believe that's all there it to her, it defines her to an extent but not entirely

"do we shun a snake for biting? my words turn people into their worst selves. this is my nature. but you? all the good deeds in the world cant erase your mistakes. we all know you, witch. saving these people wont change what youve done. accept what you are-- do you hear me? never forget it!
corruptor... we've all heard enough. i wont forget. i know who i am. and it's not who you think. i did say you wouldnt have to kneel. enjoy the spell. i cast it, but it can only be broken... by the ones you hurt. the people of amatrice. wake my friends... wake. my name is wanda. tehre was a shadow on your hearts. one i know well. one im all too skilled at casting out."

"if she'd given up, id never have known to come here. [...] his future is in your hands, as yours was in his. but consider this-- he corrupts our own worst impulses. destroying him would only prove his corruption of you was complete. dont let him keep manipulating you, vengeance is attractive... but it brings only more pain. trust me. celebrate this day. live youe lives. and imagune how it must enrage this filth... to know he's helpless to stop you."

"apologies for my kitalian, i did learn it from a demon." lmao shes so slay, not many people can casually say this, shes lived a lot of lives

"your wife is quite impressive.
always has been." wlws<3

"you trusted yourself when all of reality told you otherwise. no small feat, jarnette. polished or not, the stone would've been nothing without you to wield it." damn it's good to hear these words, need them constantly

"ive known plenty of tokens tempered against magic, but none have affected me like this. id like to study it further. with your persmission , of course.
by all means...
a trade, then. a wonder for a wonder. of equal or greater value... naturally." i have a feeling that the whole stone thing will be connected to the villain in a next issue with the lady that's immune to magic

ah look at her walking in with her lilac dress, so pretty
"i sold three books, some incense matches,a slow jazz mandrake and one of those furry bottles." lmao darcy, comment on popularised magic in the market?
"pink mink extract. someone's about ot have a lucky day, darcy. lucky enough, at least. i see quicksilver's gone?"

"not that i didnt like watching him work with his hands." lmao, darcy, again, mood, bi queen for the twins

"pietro's speed isnt magical. only he could polish this stone into a talisman. [...] just touching it numbs my hands.[...]
sounds like a dinner conversation to me. dinner and drinks.
you're right. closing time. dinner, drinks... and a bit about what brought you throught the last door?" first off, darcy that sounds like date night to me, also there's the plot thickening yall, darcy's also here because she stepped through the door

"you promised not to ask questions, wanda. you said you wouldnt push.
and i wont. this was a friendly nudge at-- best.
hear that boss?" lol wanda that sounds like something id say

aaaand vision's daughter "wanda? wanda maximoff?
im sorry , darcy. dinner will have to wait.
ill bite. who is this strange girl calling yout name?"

AH i love love love the page with wanda and her costume and the designer's notes and the details PERFECT
we need more of these

"there's no problem a little magic and a warm cup of tea cant fix!" love the motto, love this page, black and white, very much aesthetic, witch-esque, period drama, 10th century magic shop

"grand opening of the emporium january 4th teas talismans custom spells herbal remedies readings (by appointments only) amd more!" cutest way ever to nod to their comic pilot

this was a hughly anticipated comic for me since its trailer came out back in january i think?
loving the art style, pleasing to the eye, fitting to wanda
i appreciate that the pilot had a lesbian couple as the characters who are under the spotlight in need of saving, bold move for marvel
strong pilot, very well done and seems thought out

Great start to a new Scarlet Witch series.

Loved the scenes with Wanda and Pietro. They felt very natural, and the art is so striking. I'm looking forward to the series and how it weaves in more of her family.

Ahhhh! Yes! Scarlet Witch has always been one of my favorite comic series, and I've been missing it in recent years. So you can imagine my joy at the release of Scarlet Witch #1. Written by Steve Orlando, this issue has a ton of artists backing it up: Sara Pichelli, Elisabetta D'Amico, Matthew Wilson, and VC's Cory Petit. I want to thank each and every one of them for bringing my favorite character back to her own solo series.

This issue starts with a moment of intrigue – what is Wanda up to, and where will it lead? From there, we're quickly thrown into the action, almost literally. The pace keeps up from there, with a few surprising cameos along for the ride.

There are two core plots of Scarlet Witch #1. The first is the overarching project Wanda is working on; the second is related to this but still distinct. The latter plot reminded me a lot of the Purple Man, but with a few unique twists. It was almost nostalgic, and I love how it was handled (including how Wanda handled it).

I've been looking forward to this series for weeks, and Scarlet Witch #1 proves it was worth the wait! Now to kill some time before the next issue drops...

Finished reading Scarlet Witch (2023)... I honestly thought it kind of sucked. The dialogue was kind of weird. Some words were bolded in places I didn't expect, so when trying to put emphasis on them while reading the sentences created an odd experience. Though it might simply be how the Scarlet Witch speaks and something I have to get used to.
Though that doesn't clear up the slow pacing of the issue. A lot of the time is spent with the characters talking, but not talking about anything interesting. When there is action, it's very minimal, and left we confused as to what happened than anything. The art doesn't help in this regard either. I actually do like the art on an aesthetic level, but it also doesn't do much for me, at least in this comic. I hope this might be due to the lack of action in the comic, because I really do think this art can be amazing with great action sequences. Page 20 shows a glimpse of this.
The best thing about this comic for me is the design of the Scarlet Witch herself. It's fantastic. I really do wish this is the design that is kept for the comics going forward, for at least a good while.
All in all, I'm pretty disappointed in this comic. I had high hopes, but it doesn't give me a good first impression for a modern Scarlet Witch story.

Beautiful graphics in this comic!

Doctor Hydro is fought by Scarlet Witch right at the beginning.
Scarlet Witch conjures up a door through which only people who are totally hopeless can come. Jarnette Chase is the first to step through the door. She comes from a town in Italy that is under the spell of Jackson Day. All of his wishes are carried out by the residents, who slowly kill themselves in the process.

Wanda helps the residents by turning Day into a statue. In return, Jarnette gives her the stone that protected her from Day's control.

"Family has power, Day. You were a fool to test it. And a bigger fool to test me!"

Darcy is a saleswoman in Wanda's shop The EMPORIUM and Pietro also stops by during the story.

At the end, Vivian Vision steps through the door. She is the daughter of Vision. 😱

"In my dreams...they will not let me go. And they refuse to stop killing me."

This is how the first volume ends.

I AM ABSOLUELY IN LOVE WITH THIS COMIC WITH THE ART STYLE WITH THE CHARACTER GROWTH FOR WANDA BC ITS A PLOTLINE THAT FINALLY MOVES AWAY FROM HOUSE OF M. also i absolutely adored the pietro cameo. i want more where that came from. i adored the idea of the last door because it really fits the way wanda wants to do everything she can to help people not out of a want for acclaim or anything similar, but because she just wants someone to be there. for people who are struggling. i AM however so nervous about the introduction of viv, a, because she was described as wanda's daughter which takes away from virginia's character ( if the reasoning is that virginia shares wanda's brainwaves ) and b, because i kind of am dreading that vision will be heavily involved in her story again which i don't like. BUT IT WAS SO GOOD AND I AM SO DAMN EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ISSUE !!

Scarlet Witch #1 by Steve Orlando is a captivating comic book that delivers an engaging storyline, strong character development, and stunning artwork.

The writing is solid, with Orlando's dialogue being well-crafted, conveying the emotional depth of the story without being overly dramatic or forced.

The artwork by Sara Pichelli is exceptional, the illustrations effectively capture the mood and atmosphere of the story, immersing readers in Wanda's world and the challenges she faces.

Overall, Scarlet Witch #1 is a fantastic start to a promising series, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved character and setting the stage for exciting future developments. It is highly recommended for fans of the Scarlet Witch, as well as anyone looking for a well-written and beautifully illustrated comic book.

*happy hand flaps*

you know what? i think i have nothing intelligent to analyze here

i just really really love this to bits mmkay

the art is absolutely gorgeous (I love Wanda’s outfit, her green eyes, her brown skin tone here, and her fluffy dark hair, etc etc!), I LOVE seeing Wanda be mostly at peace with herself and helping others with Darcy, Pietro was amusing, and I’m excited to see more Darcy and what’s going on with Viv next issue <3

Welp time to wait impatiently for next month I guess!

A good start

This issue is the start of a series that looks very hopeful. I found myself flying through each page excited to see where the plot was headed. The idea of Darcy and Wanda running a little witch shop is such a good idea. The additional character appearances were cool but short. Overall without spoiling the story, it's really worth it! The comic leaves you with a few big questions too. Lastly, I easily rank this comic 5 stars; I hope the series just gets even better from here.

So Orlando is a writer I love, writing a character who... look, I don't hate her, I just don't love her like I love Daredevil. That being said, this plot line and character development felt so much more spot on, and I love that one of my favorites shows up at the end.

So I ended up snagging the demonized variant of this last minute and subscribing to this series, and after reading the first issue, I'm glad I did: this looks like it's going to be a great series.

A complicated character with a difficult past.
It was inevitable that this series be launched after the success of the WANDA/VISION series.
Leaning heavily on her magical back ground Wanda Maximoff is now helping people who have no where else to go for help with their magical woes.
The story has been done, but this is a reasonably fresh take and a new perspective on it.
Coming from Orlando it really was hard pressed to be bad.

what an amazing start

I am so excited to get a new scarlet witch series. I know it's only like three books but the twist of her opening a shop with a portal to people who need her most! I love the accepting fully herself and her post and using it to fuel her chaos magic. What a great story! I can't wait for more!
