Rate this book
Pastor John Zyskowski has faithfully served Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Serene, Michigan, for thirteen years. He loves his town, his daily routine, his interactions with members, and his monthly coffee-time shenanigans with the local imam and rabbi. Even more, it's 2006 and John's beloved Detroit Tigers are playing well and might be contenders for the playoffs. Life is good and he wouldn't change a thing.

But just as each pitch brings both unpredictability and opportunity for the Tigers, a few curveballs are about to head John's way. First comes a phone call that prompts John to take a long, hard look at his life as a bachelor. By day, Pastor Z is surrounded by people, but he goes home to an empty house. Is it too late for John to find love?

Then, a controversy hits Port Serene, involving the town's famous native—inventor, country music star, and actor Troy Blake—and John is caught smack in the middle of it. Will John navigate the troubled waters and make it to shore?

Follow John Z as he steps up to the plate and faces down every pitch life sends his way. Joining the team is a rich cast of characters, including Velma, the sassy next-door neighbor whose witty comebacks keep John on his toes; Ned, the wise church elder who has a habit of dropping by unannounced; Mrs. Kitteridge, the motherly church lady who lets John in on her long-held secret; and Velma's granddaughter Cynthia, who finds her way to Port Serene for the summer and just might be the one to soothe John's aching heart.
