After her fiancé cheated and her mother passed away, Tessa Nelson is quite happy to be alone, thanks. Well, not happy, exactly, but determined. Going it alone means never getting hurt. So, when she joins London’s famous Queue, her mission is simple: pay her respects to the Queen and go back to her safe, boring life.
But life is never that simple, and after meeting scholarly Oliver and encountering her ex (seriously, what are the chances?), that mission is severely compromised. She probably shouldn’t have panicked and pretended Oliver was her new boyfriend.
She definitely shouldn’t have fallen for him.
Safe and boring has her name on it, but if she continues to cling to the past, she risks losing a future she never thought she’d have.
After realising being a vet would be too much work, Cassidy settled for the much-easier job of writing novels. This began during school and culminated in a Masters in Creative Writing. Her favourite things to write are morally ambiguous LIs and enemies to lovers, preferably with a sprinkling of one beds, wound-tending, and knives to throats (in any order). She lives in Leicestershire with her dog and not-morally-ambiguous husband.
I picked up this romcom novella on a whim and it knocked my socks off! Cassidy Hart is a new-to-me author but immediately, I fell in love with her witty writing and irresistible characters, not to mention the brilliant “meet cute” set up (while waiting in the Queue along with tens of thousands of mourners to pay respect to the Queen).
Blue-haired, free spirited birthday girl Tess is nursing a broken heart since the death of her mother (who adored Queen Elizabeth) and breaking off her engagement from a cheating ex. By chance (or is it destiny?) she strikes up a conversation with handsome history professor Oliver standing in line. An adorable, opposites attract love story with two genuine, multidimensional MCs, toe-curling chemistry, a colourful cast of side characters, an inspiring message about finding love when and where you least expect, and a wonderful, sighworthy happy ending.
Can’t wait to read more from this talented author!
The male romantic interest is the best part of this instalove novella
There are multiple popular romance tropes in this story:
Forced proximity Cinnamon Roll male love interest Slow burn (no sex until the very end) FMC who has sworn to never love again Instalove
Tessa Nelson is a college dropout who has been working at her grandmother's bakery in a small town in England for the past several years, ever since her beloved mother received a terminal cancer diagnosis. A year ago, while her mother was suffering the final throes of her disease, Tessa finally offloaded her obnoxious fiancé. She had been in a relationship with him for four years, and at the worst possible time of her life, it became too obvious to miss that he had been cheating on her from the start.
At the beginning of the story, on the day before she turns 24, Tessa is waiting in a 13-hour line to view Queen Elizabeth II, whose casket is lying in state in Westminster Hall in London. Tessa is enduring this arduous quest not due to personal desire, but as a means of honoring her mother, who deeply admired the queen, in hopes of obtaining closure regarding her mother's untimely death.
Standing right beside Tessa in the queue is a handsome, 32-year-old history professor named Oliver Murphy. Over the course of their vigil throughout the night, they open up to each other and become emotionally close.
This novella is told entirely from Tessa's first-person POV. She is deeply wounded by her mother's death and her ex's betrayal. She had vowed never to risk her heart again, but Oliver is an irresistible Cinnamon Roll.
I could easily see why Tessa would fall for Oliver, who is almost too wonderful to be real, but because we never get his POV, I found it difficult to understand why he was so wild about Tessa.
I was also extremely disappointed that Tessa made absolutely no effort to obtain the contact information for a wonderful old lady named Thelma who acted as a mentor, protector, and morale booster to Tessa throughout this story. Tessa never even bothered to thank Thelma. Her heedless lack of gratitude made me actively dislike Tessa.
There is onstage sex that is mildly descriptive and not particularly crude. Unfortunately, it was cringe-worthy for me that the two of them leap into bed after 24 hours without bathing or brushing their teeth. This authorial oversight made it difficult for me to enjoy their otherwise lusty display.
I've been looking forward to reading a book about The Queue for a few months now and when I looked it up on Amazon I found this one right along side it. This short read just hit right. I absolutely loved Tessa she's just 24 but has been through one of the hardest things a person of any age can experience. She has a wicked best friend but she's a way away so Tessa is pretty much chugging through life pretty independently. The Queue is such a bizarre, uniting experience,12 or more hours with the same people, that inevitability you sort of become friends with the people either side of you. Tessa really lucked out standing next to Oliver! Swoon.
The two other books I've read about The Queue have moved on into the future, I kind of loved that this take stayed right there in London because something about starting the journey home bursts that magic bubble. I am really excited to read more from Cassidy Hart if this novella is anything to go by.
The book had good character development without the boring superfluous detail that usually slows down storylines for me. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and really hope I can turn into Thelma one day. I kinda wish Tessa got her number, too. Thanks for a good read.
What a wonderful short read. In way of full disclosure, I'm a writer and was part of a discussion about the title of this book, well I can say for sure as it was all anonymous, but the title is unique so... I loved the promise the title suggested then and the the story delivered on that promise and so much more. Funny and poignant, sweet and sassy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to see a follow up on the rest of their story.
Adored this gorgeous wee novella. Fabulous choice of setting for two likeable characters to fall in love. Not only did we get to know this this couple and follow their falling in love story, we experienced history in the making through their eyes. Throw I a couple of fun side characters and you’ve got the recipe for an enjoyable short read.
This adorable whirlwind of a romance takes place in 12 hours where the protagonist is forced to face some uncomfortable truths in the hope for a better future.
After Tessa's mom passed away from terminal cancer, Tessa decides, as a way of getting closure, to go and pay her respects to the late Queen Elizabeth's coffin on behalf of her mother. She thought it would bring some closure to her grief and would honour her mother too, and what better day to do it than on her 24th birthday, right? Whilst waiting in the queue, she happened to come across a history professor with his nose stuck in his kindle called Oliver. They get to talking and when Tessa's cheating ex fiance happens to stumble upon them in the queue, Tessa grabs Oliver and announces that he is her boyfriend, unsure on if he'll go along with it! This book is a rom-com with a very sweet meet-cute! It has all you could want from an opposites attract, happily ever after Novella!! It is also on Kindle Unlimited!!!✨️
why do I always pick up novellas without knowing it’s a novella haha.
sometimes with novellas I feel things move to fast (understandable tho) or that there isn’t any depth to the characters, or that I miss something.
not this time, the characters where beautiful with depth even though we may not know everything, they feel like real people. the pace was nice, not too quick and not too slow. with an end that you can fill in the rest of their story but also feels complete. I really enjoyed reading this :)
An adorable and very fun novella! I thoroughly enjoyed this cute read that has us waiting in THE queue, the famous one, the one where everyone waited to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II. I loved Tessa’s sense of humor and being able to understand her eventhough this is a novella, I felt for her and rooted for her so quickly. Same for Oliver, a perfect addition, a match thrown her way by the universe, or her mom, or maybe even the queen? 🤓 Then the side characters are fun and amazing, it was like being there in the queue with them. Can’t wait to check out more from Cassidy!
“Queue-t” super fast read. Took me less than 2 hours to read the whole thing. The book isn’t super well written but satisfied the need for a short cute romance. I like Oliver being a history professor. Lots of cliches but I wasn’t mad about it.
This was a short but cute romance about grief and unity. It's about falling in love in the most unexpected places and taking risks. It's a heartwarming read.
What a cute little novella. I really enjoyed it. It was closed door spice. A guy, Oliver and a girl, Tessa meet in a que waiting to pay respects to the Queen after she died.
This is such a cute novella, I loved the set-up of meeting in the infamous queue and the dynamic between Oliver and Tess. This is jam-packed with romance and tension and I enjoyed every second!
