She arrived in Detroit amidst a swirl of lights and magic. She had no memory of where she came from. No idea why she was there.
Years later, she’s established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the Detroit magical scene. She ingratiated herself with the local reapers. She set up a community called the Cathedral to help those who had been displaced from their homes and families, declaring that nobody would fall through the cracks. Still, doubt remains. Luna is determined to figure out why she’s in Detroit. She needs to know what she’s supposed to accomplish within the city’s crumbling boundaries. Her story is nowhere near finished.
When a body shows up on the grounds of the Cathedral, her quest kicks into overdrive. Ritual murders aren’t her forte, but this one is going to haunt Luna. Also haunting her is Jesse Wilder, a young detective who has been paired with an old friend. He has specific beliefs about what’s happening. Luna’s opinion doesn’t match up in the least.
He’s a “by the rules” guy. Luna likes to fly by the seat of her pants. She’s never met a problem she didn’t want to improvise.
It’s going to take both of them to solve this case. Even then, it will only be the beginning of their tale.
Settle in for excitement. Luna Thorn is about to change everything you know about the magical world.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
The thing I loved about finding out this series was in the works.was that it meant we would be back in the world.if the Grimlocks who we first met in the Grim Reaper series about a family of reapers fighting supernatural enemies, then again in the Deaths Gate series about a Bruja fighting against an evil entity. We met Luna in the Deaths Gate series when she joined forces with Izzy Sage (the Bruja) to help fight the evil invading Detroit. Luna was an interesting character from the start, she's very young, she doesn't even know how old she actually is. Her magic is extremely powerful, she is.more than just a strong witch. Finally she lives in the street, Luna started off not knowing where she came from and has.no memory of her life before she appeared on the streets of Detroit five/six years ago, homeless she was helped by a vampire and a werewolf (who also.lived in the streets) who basically adopted her teaching her how to survive and helping her getting somewhat of an education........... Mainly T.V. Movies and Harry Potter............ When Izzy and the Grimlocks.meet Luna she has organised her friends.into a community of sorts who look out for each other and share resources. Cormack Grimlock adopts her (or tries to) into his family but Luna, while unable to resist him will not leave her friends so they are constantly battling. Him, wanting her to let him take over and fix everything, her, wanting to keep her independence. The new character in this book is a young police detective (well they are cosy paranormal romances) named Jesse, he's Griffin's new partner (Griffin is also a police detective and Aisling Grimlocks husband) Jesse does not endear himself to Luna as he accuses her of running a cult................well, there is a church in the site of their new home and they did name that home The Cathedral........in hindsight maybe not the brightest idea Luna ever had. Now.......after years of silence it looks like Luna may finally begin to learn about her missing past...........but is she ready for what she will find........
I love everything Amanda M Lee writes! She has drama, humor, sarcasm and love. I really enjoy how the characters of different series crossover. It's like reading about an ever expanding family.
It creeps me out when female fiction writers create fantasy fictional female heroines that are barely legal and have the physical attributes of children. The main character here, Luna, is the size of the average 10 year old. 🤮
Exceptionally entertaining Paranormal cozy mystery series
This is an exceptionally entertaining spin off paranormal cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Luna Thorne is a young woman who showed up out of nowhere six years ago. She describes herself as a witch because she does not know what else or how else to describe her self. She lived on the streets of Detroit helping the downtrodden and homeless until one time she got lucky enough to make a bid on an abandoned building and got it at a very cheap price. She didn’t begin refurbishing it with some friends in the help of many others in her community of homeless and helpless people and they call it the cathedral. We’re together they work to help each other and feed each other and keep each other safe. Luna also happen to come across the path of the Grimlock family a family of reapers from the Detroit area whose job it is to read the souls of those who passed on And it sent them to the other side. They are also the ones in control of the deaf gate on Bell Isle in Detroit. Or another of their adopted family members Izzy is the gate keeper and manages the gate for the reapers of the area. Izzy is a Bruja witch from New Orleans and is very powerful in her own right. Together with a Grimlock Izzy and many others Luna and them all have all fight a lot of battles together over the past six years. now the focus is on Luna and how she came to be in Detroit and what is going on from here on out. Read on and enjoy the adventure and see where the new expanded world goes once again.
Picked up the book not realizing it was part of a larger series. That made it difficult to follow and remember side characters. They mentioned giving a character a binder to learn people/monsters and I felt like I needed one too. So many side characters with very little development on any of them. I also found most characters to be obnoxious and the dialogue felt juvenile and forced. Didn’t feel the chemistry between the leads either. Don’t think I’d continue with this series or pick up any others in the series.
Luna Thorn, saviour of the homeless and desperate, has her own mysterious past she's been hiding.
Found slipping through a rip in the dimensions by Reid and Lincoln 6 years ago, she seemed to have appeared out of nowhere with no recollection of her past.
Now that past is rushing towards her at breakneck speed, and she is going to have to face it.
Jesse, Griffin's new partner, is highly suspicious of the young Luna who seemingly, to him anyway, is running some kind of cult at the Cathedral. One body on the Cathedral premises and then Luna is at the scene of a pretty horrific mass murder and why when he delves deeper can he not find any trace of her existence from prior to 6 years ago?
All of the delightful Grimlock family are determined to help, and when things get freaky, both Jesse and Luna have a whole lot of learning to do.
Absolutely fantastic and a perfect start to finally discovering all about Luna.
If you’re not reading Amanda M Lee you should be. Her books draw you in and settle around your shoulders like a cashmere blanket. This new series is no different, and has the added bonus of returning characters from the Grimlock family. Luna is finding herself. She literally dropped into being in a blaze of light, and has no idea who she was, or where she was prior to her arrival. She passionately takes care of the marginalized population in her neighborhood. She is a pure soul, with a steel spine. Her supporters are magical as well, and it looks like there’s a love interest in her near future. As always Amanda’s books are full of humor, snark and love. Don’t miss the opportunity to read this book.
I hated the whole premise of this parental figure tromping over all the MCs boundaries - for love! But I finished the book, so I enjoyed parts of it. Halfway through I realized this was the umpteenth book in a huge series so I was missing a ton of context. I liked the compassion towards homeless people but the lack of harm reduction annoyed me. It was nice they acknowledged no one trusts the police but then to say those people are misguided because the police are actually wonderful was outrageous, especially for a book written in 2023.
It took too long for the story to develop. Too similar to the Scout series where the female lead character is abandoned at a young age and Luna doesn’t remember her past. The similarities between the two characters background, powers, setting for the story, and loyalty to the other characteristics makes the author look lazy.
entertaining but finally I can’t connect with the FMC
Rating: 3.5⭐️
Monster Mayhem (A Luna Thorn Witchy Mystery Book 1) by Amanda M. Lee was an interesting read for me. The first book in Lee’s Luna Thorn Witchy Mystery series, I wasn’t aware when I picked it up that it was a part of an interconnected universe of series. Sometimes that’s not an issue but here the characters and recent impactful events come from those series and not having the knowledge of them leaves serious gaps for the new reader here.
A Pan (god) led invasion and huge battles? Not a clue but many references are made here to this. Same for the Grimlocks, the Reaper family the main character was “adopted” by. They too have a series. See below.
Here we have no idea what their full abilities or duties are. It’s an incomplete picture while putting this family in a huge position in the narrative and MFC’s life.
Author Lee has created many terrific elements for this character of Luna Thorn and the mystery that is her life’s story. Her shocking arrival in a blast of pink explosive power, as a tiny teenager-looking being. Her enigmatic one sentence statement and then complete amnesia. For five years.
I enjoyed the found family aspect of the story, the surrounding personalities were a lively group of not fully developed characters. Each either had a history I wasn’t aware of or required further foundation here to be fully fleshed out.
The Greek mythology included involving some different aspects of the pantheon that other similar fantasy stories haven’t explored so that’s a plus here. And that battle was fast paced and entertaining. But over way too quickly for all its buildup.
If you’re hearing a “but” or hesitation coming about an element here, you’re correct. I think that the lack of foundation is a real stumble here but can certainly be dealt with by a note saying this is not a standalone and part of a connected narrative.
My main issue is with Luna. In many aspects of her character. She’s “tiny” to the extent of often being mistaken for someone minor in age. 🚩. A abnormal hair color (bright white) made her decide to dye her hair pink. Which also makes her look younger in appearance. Despite being a building owner and running a lifestyle commune. Too many dichotomies have been written into her to maintain a believable/credible character.
“I think I’m a little old to be chastised like a teenager,” I complained when we were alone. “Can you not do that?” Reid looked caught between annoyance and embarrassment. “I’m sorry,” he said after several seconds. “I wasn’t trying to infantilize you.”
Immediately after, she’s treated like a child. As well as accepting that she’s been acting less responsibly. Then does an about face.
She’s surrounded by people who treat her like a child or at least like a younger teenager while she’s constantly insisting that she’s an adult. A repetitive behavior that gets old quickly.
Although, and this is a issue I have with the author’s crafting of the character, she’s a magical badass then someone who’s crying before her “adoptive father “ then proceeds to go in a different direction altogether script wise in the next scenario with a different pair of characters. She’s consistently inconsistent. And the dynamic carries over into every aspect here and all relationships. I just couldn’t connect.
Again, this seems to be a very popular connected universe. Just not one I’m familiar with. Perhaps if I’d started with another series I’d have a different opinion and reading experience.
Maybe I’ll try again with another series and circle back to this.

I accidentally fell into this series, and was very pleasantly surprised! Monster Mayhem by Amanda Lee is quirky, light, high energy, funny, and a good time!
What you can expect… 👹Paranormal Urban Fantasy 👹Found Family 👹Cozy Mystery 👹FMC of Unknown Origins 👹Myths, Monsters, & Magic 👹High Energy
This story is a lighthearted paranormal foray set in modern day Michigan, where all the monsters/creatures are real, just living side-by-side secretly with humans. This book is full of goofy banter, has plenty of modern references (which I often don’t necessarily enjoy, but did here), is very relationship driven, and feels like the stage is being set for the series. I really enjoyed the combination of family and found family, mystery, modern day meets myths and monsters, and the tease of future romance.
I really appreciated the attention and focus on individuals of low income and who are unhoused. It is such a serious issue that I think the attention is excellent, especially driving the point home of how uneducated many people are about efforts being made to help in their communities.
I am often not a fan of how young children are portrayed when they’re intended as a character to provide levity and breaks in the tension, but I found the toddler Lily in here to be adorable, hilarious, and very accurately age representative. I also appreciated how the various family members and characters behaved around her- the interactions all felt so genuine and uniquely appropriate to their characters, that it was very endearing and entertaining.
I definitely had a little trouble keeping track of all of the many characters, but suspect that will get better by reading each subsequent book. That said, the characters are all well written, with discernible similarities to family members and traits fitting of various familial roles and hierarchy, which I thought was well done, especially with the length of this first book.
Oh, and the MC is pretty cool too! 😜 She’s an interesting and compelling character I’m looking forward to learning more about as the series progresses.
Sarah Grace Wright did an absolutely fantastic job and demonstrated her incredible range portraying so many unique characters, personalities, and emotions. Especially in regard to snark and sass, she had me cracking up at the banter and family feuding. She is also one of the only (if not the only) narrators I’ve ever really found their voice for a child to be cute and endearing, and not leaning toward insipid, annoying, or overdone. With so many characters, I imagine it can be immensely challenging to vocally differentiate, and I am very impressed with Sarah’s range and skill.
Definitely a fun read, and I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of the series!
I liked this more than I thought I would. Luna was never my favourite character in the Death Gate series, but she had a mysterious backstory that I found interesting, plus she had a mouth on her to rival a Grimlock. And now there is Jesse. Such a handsome guy, with a major stick-up-his-butt attitude. Not my favourite love interest from Amanda M. Lees’s numerous series, but I can see some potential in this.
The mystery was not the driving force of this book, but what we got was fun. I’m definitely itching to find out what Luna’s big secret might be (and who she was before the big forgetting). Mostly, I was here for the Grimlock vibes, and those are always immaculate.
There was nothing gripping about this book. I’ve borrowed it over and over again but never read it I’d suddenly remember it was a spinoff of a series I had zero interest in. This time I decided to give it a try and I wasn’t impressed. The Grimlock family are annoying and pushy, they have no respect for Luna or even each other. They refuse to allow anyone to have autonomy and force themselves into every aspect of everyone’s lives.
Luna is an okay character but incredibly childish, however that makes sense considering her lack of a past beyond 6 years ago.
Aside from Luna’s backstory, nothing is really interesting about this book. The stakes aren’t high and the action sequences are bland.
I’ve been looking forward to this book for months, ever since it was announced.
Join Luna on a thrilling adventure as she starts to lean about her past while dealing with a tempestuous detective that gets her on edge from the very beginning. And of course the Grimlocks have to be included, especially because of hey can’t stand to hear the word no and love Luna a lot.
I can’t wait until the next book comes out with more answers to Luna’s past emerge with the questions on who she use to be and who she is now. I love seeing her wit and sass though out the book.
I love a beginning and a continuing thread all in one amazing story.
Luna Thorn is amazing, something we already new lol but honestly find out more about Luna and having her the focus of this new Grimlock spin-off is going to be brilliant if this first mystery was anything to go by. Jesse Wilder, what an interesting and intriguing character, even to himself lol oh and his parents are just awesome. I loving the new additions to the original Grimlock series, I’m excited for this new chapter with new friends and old ones who get to discover more about themselves.
I’ve been excited for this new series featuring Luna and my favourite family the Grimlocks since Amanda announced it. This first book is an awesome start to this, where we catch up with Luna, the other residents of the cathedral as well as the Grimlocks. We get drawn into another paranormal murder mystery and meet Gryphons new partner Jesse who also has secrets. As always the story is packed full of snark and humour, a highly entertaining read, can’t wait for the next instalment.
I am loving the start to this series. So much potential. Loved the characters and storyline. Can't wait to see where this goes. Love Luna, like Jesse. I'm not sold on Jesse. I changed my opinion on him numerous times throughout book. I liked him, mostly. Loved everyone else. I have a feeling he'll come around. No spoilers, but I love all the magical mojo in the book. Looking forward to next in series. We get the Grimlock crew and a band of new characters. Told from Luna's POV.
I always hoped Amanda would write a book about where Luna came from and well just about her. I was thinking her and Redmond would get together. But not to ruin the story ill move on. I love that all the Grimlock are in the story and I can not wait for the second book.! I would recommend this book to any and everyone. But before reading this book i 100% recommend reading the series *Death gate grim reapers* not only is it an awesome series but it gives the whole story leading up to Luna's story.
Luna has popped up during Izzy's stories and is a fireball of a character. Her home, the Cathedral is taking shape thanks to her people's hard work and help from the Grimlocks.
They have decided to adopt her. Not officially but in the Grimlock way.
This story has a gorgon and sea creatures with some revealing secrets going on.
Griffin has a new Partner in Jesse Wilder, a by the book cop from a wealthy family but he too hides a secret.
All is reveal to some extent and some interesting story arcs added. Looking forward to the next story.
We all know that Amanda Lee is one of my faves on here( top two actually and they are tied) I’ve been avoiding this because so much is going on with Scout and I was going to go reread for the fourth time the whole college series so I can get mad at Eric again. Then the wedding just happened, I wasn’t ready. Now I’m back in going to go read the second Luna now. If you haven’t read any don’t start here but either way start one you will quickly be addicted. This was great I’m ready for the next. May reread Aislings also
This is a new series that fits right in with the rest of Ms. Lee’s books. Laugh out load funny, twists to keep you guessing and all around fun. She brings back our favorite characters from the world of the Grimlocks and adds a few interesting new ones to keep us looking forward to the he next book. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
This is the first book in a new series and boy was it fantastic. Now that said there are characters from Ms. Lee’s other series and yes if you read these series first this book would mean so much more to you but she does such a good job explaining relationships that you really wouldn’t be that confused. Now that said, why deprive yourself when the Grimlocks and the death gate series are so great. Get reading folks!
I absolutely adore this storyline. The Grimlocks and of course adding Luna to the mix is awesome. I love we are finally finding out more about her background. Learning how she came to Detroit is an amazing story. She is so very special, everyone she brings into her life get another chance at something new. I loved the original storyline about the Grims and look forward to reading more of this offshoot on Luna and her life.
Amanda has done it again, great read! Luna really comes alive more in this series, of course it's her series after all. I can't wait for the next book to come out. The story line is great, filled with mystery, friendship, family, and even a little mayhem and a touch of cuteness. I think this is going to be one of her better series, it's hard to say for sure as all Amanda's series are great.
This book should have gone through a lot more character development for Luna. Instead, we got her being pushed around and forced to capitulate to a group that demanded that she cling to them. At least go through more of her internal process like you did for Izzy. Some people really DON'T WANT INSTANT FAMILIES. The Grimlock clan wind up acting as if they have no respect for Luna since THEY decided that she had no choice.
I love that one of my favorite characters now has her own series! Lunas past has a always been a mystery, especially where she's concerned. Ms. Lee gives us tantalizing hints about who she is, and more importantly what she is and why she cannot remember. Jessie is a great addition to the on going spin-off of Asling Grim lock and her family. I highly recommend that you read this book whether or not you have read the other books.
So you have a vampire, a wolf shifter, a place that cares for non-fully-human beings and a woman, Luna, what doesn't know her own past but cares deeply for the safety of those in the Cathedral, home to these beings.
There is, of course, a murder and Luna and she's going to have to work with a fully human detective. There's a bunch of evil beings involved and the story becomes rather complex but it still remains fairly interesting throughout.
Luna gets her own series! Which is entertwined with the Grimlocks and Izzy. A year of peace is over and a new battle is ahead. Some characters at the Cathedral get fleshed out and some backstory.
Lots of action, snark, and the seedy side of Detroit.
I waited so long for Luna‘s Story and have been looking forward to it since she first appeared in the other series. This book is exactly what I expected and I loved it. That I already knew most of the characters made it only better in my opinion. I can wait to get my hands on the next book, sadly it seems to be a while bevor it’s available.
