Second Chances #1

Death is Easy

Rate this book
“It’s nothing against you, Nora,” my fated mate says, “but you’re not good enough.”

I was a werewolf who was rejected by her fated mate. It’s an act that’s usually saved for the worst kinds of people—criminals, abusers, murderers.

Not eighteen-year-old girls celebrating their birthday with their family.

I was betrayed by those closest to me. My family were mortified that I had embarrassed them, and my Alpha and Luna were angry their son had been matched to me in the first place.

In a brutal move, I was banished from our pack with nothing but the clothes on my back and a grieving wolf…

Until six years later, when my billionaire boss, and the most powerful Alpha lion shifter, Atticus Phoenix, walks into my life. He calls me his, but I don’t believe it. I can’t trust it.

Especially not when every man in his inner circle adds to the claim.

They’re strong and powerful, and I’m… not good enough.

But when the man who broke me comes to Atticus for help, mated to my sister, of all people, and these powerful men offer me revenge… can I accept it, even if I can’t accept them?

What was the point? We get it she’s depressed. She even tried to off herself but now that her wolf likes all 864 of her mates she’s good to go?

left me sad

This book was probably the most depressing book Ive ever read. It was very slow and just sad. I kept reading thinking the story line would pick up or she would find her strength but no. I don’t think I’ll read another.

Someone in a review for the 2nd book in this series put it perfectly. This is trauma porn. I can appreciate an accurate depiction of some of life's more difficult things, but this isn't that. This goes straight past informative and emotion inducing to glorifying mental illness and treating those who care about you and are trying to help, poorly, or ignoring them altogether.

This story was SO solely focused on the fmc's depression and how sh*tty her life is that we don't see great characterization or character development from any of the main characters. I still don't understand why basically all the mmc's want to be with her and proceed to stick around. They also need more individualization as they don't seem like separate people I can identify and relate to.

The world the author is building has potential and good bones, but they're so intensely focused on the depression it's hard to see anything else. Also, it ends in the MIDDLE of the story in a terrible place, so be warned, and had no happily for now or HEA or really any bright spark to encourage me that things will improve or change.

As a p.s. I'm writing this as someone with severe depression and anxiety for almost a decade, so I'm not speaking ignorantly about the topic. If you struggle with depression yourself, be cautious if you decide to pick up this book, and don't feel bad if you have to walk away, as it doesn't lighten up at all.

you’re really not that special if everyone and their brother is suddenly your mate.

I should have known this book was going to be bad after reading this: "His buttocks, the toned, meaty cheeks, are sitting on my desk, and I’m so tempted to touch them."

Not a day at the spa but worth it

Nora is struggling. To put it mildly. She's been looking forward to turning 18 for forever it seems. Now that she's an adult she can find her mate. And when she does, that very night, things go from amazing to omg. Not in a good way. Omg as in her world literally ended. Because her mate decided that compassion was weakness and broke the bind. She lost half her soul, her wolf, her family, her pack, and her mental health all in one night. Six years later, living as a human, she's still struggling. And her anxiety isn't being lessened by the mates that keep popping up in her life.

Spoilers ahead.
Depression isn't easy. Compounded by anxiety and trauma and the inability to truly confess to a human therapist isn't helping, either. Honestly, considering the selfish cause of the broken bond I'm surprised that other packs and prides aren't trying to usurp that alpha and replace him with one who would protect the pack instead of abuse them. It makes the plea he makes later laughable. I appreciated the author's dedication to the struggles of mental health. It's not just a daily fight, it's a minute by exhausting minute war. Sometimes you're locked inside your own head, sometimes you're hyper aware of everything, some days are great, sometimes the pall lasts for months without a break. We see Nora go through all of it. With the added shifter struggle. Defensively protecting her mind and heart, to struggling to allow any part of the new bonds, to her wolf denying the bonds, to that ending. Some trigger warnings should definitely be mentioned there. Depression, PTSD, anxiety, denial, attempted su!c!de, and 1 of her mates is a neutralizer of threats (aka he makes threats disappear in a bloody fashion). Some are vaguely mentioned in the blurb, others are not. And the ending is a self rescue, but not a firm HEA. Nora still has more work to do to bolster herself. I appreciated that mates weren't a quick fix, and that this was a slow burn. The investment in the world building, the character development shows.

I posted this before I read the whole book but I still stand by it:
I just want to point out how annoying vague references of triggers are. Seriously. "She looses everything"? A child? A mate? Her ability to take care of herself? Mobility? Her life savings? Her home? Her family? What caused this? A r*pe? A hostage situation? A robbery where she may have been assaulted in some way? Come on. Each item on that list is triggering for someone. Each is its own level of heartbreaking. Such vague warnings leave readers hesitant to pick up a book. Quit dancing and let us know what we're getting into. Or what we might need to avoid for our mental health.
This one is a mate rejection tale apparently. Definitely not what I was worried about after the blurb. Yes, being denied by half your soul (since shifters have soul bonds) would be traumatic. No doubt. But considering the dearth of truly (and disgustingly) dark so called romances on the market that employ the r*pe trope it's not what I was afraid of. You don't know how scary it is to pick up a romance these days. Because too many authors don't have warnings, or if they do they're so dang vague.

I have mixed feelings about this book... There's no connection. Usually by the third chapter, I've connected to the characters but not here. Something is just OFF about it.
I'm going to check out book two but idk if I will finish it.

Honestly, this book was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Most shifter books I pick up from Tiktok are meh but the writing and pacing of this book are good.

The relationship between her and her mates never felt rushed or too out of place. I hope the rest of the series is the same. Now that her and her wolf are on the same page, I hope to see more fight from Nora.

!!! CAUTION! SUICIDE WARNING!!!

Attempted suicide by the female main character. Suicide of an off page character mention.

That said, I have many problems with a book (actually, this will be a trilogy, so 2 more volumes of this to come) as heavily steeped in serious mental health issues written in the YA paranormal/shifter/reverse harem genre. These type of mental health issues are not to be taken lightly. Here's why.

The female main character (FMC) speaks of suicide numerous times. She belittles herself constantly. Worthless, pathetic, useless, etc. Its disheartening, and downright difficult. She does not reach out for help, knowing that she needs it. When she does have help, she refuses to participate. While these things do happen in a clinical setting, again I point out the audience this book targets, and ask where is the responsibility for her young readership.

It ends on a cliffhanger, the FMC has just attempted suicide. It is unconscionable on the author's part to leave this character in this state of mental distress, knowing that youth that may read this book have higher than normal rates of suicide, and may see the absolute darkness and despair of a fictional character attempting to end her life, as permission to end theirs.

The author states that writing this helped her through a tough patch in her own life. She should then be extremely concerned about how her words may influence someone in that state of mental pain.

Lastly, the author states for everyone to be kind in their reviews. She wants to express her views in published form, but wants to silence and suppress others. Censorship of critique never goes over well.

Heartbreaking

Such a beautiful and necessary story focused on Nora’s, our FMC, struggles with mental health.

After traumatic event that took place on her birthday, Nora is struggling with life. And things don’t improve when she meets her mates.

This story was like a punch in the chest, right on your plexus solar. It felt relatable and real. I could feel Nora’s pain and despair as well as her strength. She has such a strong will. As overwhelmed and ready to give up as she felt, she kept going and fighting with all her might. And I just wanted to be there for her.

She felt very real to me and I am so glad she found mates who recognized all those qualities in her. Their simple and honest care and devotion were heartwarming. Not for one second did they doubt that Nora was perfect for them. I hope they can heal and grow with each other.

I hope some of the characters get what they deserve for the despicable way they acted towards Nora when she needed their support the most because as Nora said “she would have made a great Luna”.

Apart from the big focus on mental health and depression, I have very much intrigued by the hunters are what they want. There’s a lot to uncover here though I know what I’m hoping for.

I’m very much ready for book 2.

PS: with Death is Easy being book 1 and Survival is Hard book 2, I would love for book 3 to be Love is Forever but we shall see. Great titles for this series in any case so far.

I struggled to finish this. It started really well and I was struggling to put it down. Then we suddenly go from 3 to 5 mates. Fine not a problem, but I found the new mates difficult to connect with. One of the downfalls of reverse harems I guess, the first 3 were well written and you could sense the connection through the writing. These next two, I came round to and just went with it but their connection just didn't have the same feeling and I didn't feel like they were needed. Then number 6 was added and it lost me, there were too many mates for it to really instill that connection. Even the first 3 seemed to lose those feelings through the writing in the second half because each individual isn't explored enough. There is just no character development or evolution with them. I actually didn't understand why they were so hell bent on being with her.

Secondly, Nora. I started off really liking her, she had fire and I thought she was going to be a really strong FMC. The mental health aspect is great, however, it's soooo drawn out and lengthy. It's so hard to stick with it. The fire and spirit she has in the first quarter all but vanish and there's no sign of it in the second half. Someone else put it perfectly in that it is trauma porn. That is the only focus with Nora which makes for an incredibly sad read.

Finally, I found it lacking in plot. Again the first half sets out all the puzzles and what we're going to find out along the way and then.... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The whole plot for the second half is her mental health, struggling with her wolf and the wolf not recognising her new mates. Very little about the hunters, the new pride or Nora's exile. It just wasn't enough and made it really tedious to read in parts.

I just can't see myself carrying on with the series unfortunately. I don't care enough about each of the connections to bother. Had they stayed with the 3 mates I think I would have felt compelled to continue as I really liked all 3 of the first mates and Nora in the first half.

The world created had a lot of potential, so I enjoyed the overall idea of it. However I am just not sure on the book as a whole, the writing just didn't feel natural and some of the way things were worded or described just felt off. Some sentences I had to re read because it felt like a word(s) was missing or added by mistake.
Whilst I appreciated the mental health themes in this, it just felt a bit self consuming. The focus was wholly on the FMC and so there wasn't much character development for the MMCs, I didn't feel like I learnt much about them or really got to know them. Whilst mental health can be consuming for the individual, I think the author still had the role of creating memorable characters alongside the FMC, and the plot itself was okay...
Also when the POV changes, some of the scenes repeat rather than continue where it just left off so it feels repetitive in parts. It also felt like there was a contradiction, one moment the MMCs would say that it is on her terms and they don't expect anything...and then the next she gets told off for going to walk out the room. Are they supportive and understanding? Or just controlling and inconsiderate?
I also expected more friendship between the MMC but they aren't overly nice to each other, so it feels a little confusing at first. They aren't very nice to people outside the pack, but I expected a bit more affection amongst them.

Wow…just wow…talk about an emotional rollercoaster. Nora’s story had me feeling all the feels good and bad. While at times difficult to read because Nora’s grief and pain was just so visceral, it was truly raw and real in such an authentic way. Letty Frame doesn’t beat around the bush, she gives it to you straight. And the emotions and turmoil Nora is feeling, you feel them right along with her. But Nora’s strength and resilience is truly beautiful. Despite struggling, she doesn’t let the darkness consume her. And with the support, kindness, and love of her mates, she has people at her side so she never has to be alone again. They fight for her when she doesn’t feel she can fight. Together hopefully they can find the happiness they all crave. Such a raw, vulnerable, and truly outstanding story! Prepare for all the feels!

Perfect for me! ❤❤❤❤❤

This is so much my type of book! I loved everything in this book! The broken FMC, the way she didn't cave after two days because of pretty d*cks... The way her depressed mood is described is so realistic, I felt so many emotions during this read🥰
I just can't wait for the next book!!!

I cant with this heroine. She is mega weak, doormat, martyr, constant hot-cold with the mates, pretends/denies she is not a wolf like a 5y old. The whole book is about her feeling sorry for herself.
Nothing she does or say is cute or makes me want to protect her.

Dnf 50% or so when she saw her ex-mate again and she is this whispering doormat martyr.

It gets old reaaaaal fast.

TW: Attempted Suicide of the main female character and a suicide of a character not on page.

Alright this was really not my favorite and I almost put it down a couple times but I've been in a slump and I did not want to go through it again. I am honestly annoyed with the reviews on this book because I try not to read anything below a certain point and thought this was safe. Lets break this into categories so you don't get a rant.

FMC:
Alright. So I get that this book was really hitting the mental health aspect on the head repeatedly over and over. Clearly the writer has had some therapy and experiences of their own and that really came through with our Main character and may have been really working through some harsher stuff while writing this...then just don't bill it as a romance, or don't bill it as this RH romance. Make a book on the characters mental health and work through it because this was rough for a romance/fantasy reader.
We spend the first 3rd of this book with her flat out denying her past and not acknowledging anything. She ignores the real things happening around her even though in her head she acknowledged them. She was naive and annoying about it all and it just made me not want to read more about her.

We then spend the next 2/3rds in a depressive episode that has all of her mates laying in bed with her, coddling her, and talking about mental health/suicide. Valid all of this. Good story telling? Engaging for a reader in book one? No. I know that sounds bad but I don't want to read a book where we are stuck in a depressive episode, I read to stay out of my own thanks. I think the upsetting part too is the ending of this book for me. I understand depression and the depths it takes people too, but to end the book like this?

She tries to commit suicide and would have succeeded if not for her wolf turning. It falls in line with the story line and what the author planned out, but having everyone not react by putting her in more intense therapy makes me sad for this portrayal. If someone in your life has a suicide attempt, please don't just say it's okay we are here. Get them help. Overall, the severe mental health concerns kept me from enjoying her character and will ultimately be why I'm not picking up book 2.

MMC:
Why do we have 6 mates in a book that is one big depressive episode without real connection outside of pushing her to be okay? 6 guys when the entire plot is just her being mentally ill and talking about her past? This book wasn't a romance, it was the author's intensive outpatient journal without any of the perks or success of therapy being in here. The therapist is there for 2 seconds true but he isn't a real presence for her.

Plot:
Maybe it's because I've read so many fated mates, rejected mates etc. But I just kept thinking that she needed to just get over it. It had been 6 years, she has 6 mates, and Kennedy sucked...so just move on? I can get the mental health took a toll on this, but as a reader I just wanted to skip ahead because again though it's a valid life experience we got so bogged down in it that the book just didn't have a ton to offer.

It also bothered me that the depth of this mental health issue and especially the suicide attempt weren't put in a warning. I am a mental health therapist and thinking of the people who unknowingly go to a pretty hard and dark place just by getting into this head space makes me frustrated.

I am so, so thankful for this book.
This book really helped me recognize a lot of similarities between myself and the main character. I found myself in tears saying: " I've felt and thought the same thing,Nora." The feels were real and so intense. The bonds aren't insta-love, they aren't instantly sexual, and though there might be a pull to each other, they don't rush Nora. The way they care for her is so heartwarming. The way each mate builds her up and supports her is beautiful. Nora might not see her worth yet, but I can't wait until she does, because she isn't a weak wolf at all.

First know this book is heavy in mental health awareness. Please check the triggers and know where your mind is. This book was written wonderfully and artistically that you can feel the emotions roll of the page. Nora's story is worth going in blind if you can. I couldn’t put this book down and cant wait for book two after that small cliffhanger.

I loved LOVED! That it touches on the importance of mental health and how everyone goes through it differently.

Also fucking hate the spineless weasel that is Kennedy & her sister.

Sure love just shack up with the man who almost killed your baby sister!

This story has so much potential but between the excessive details about body hair and outfits, it falls short.

Mental health( and its varying degrees) is always a tough topic to delve into especially when the author centers the entire story around it.

And I mean THE ENTIRE STORY.

This story is depressing af. There are funny sentences here and there but I just gotta say, it isn’t a fun book to read.

It moves slowly. So slowy. And I am not talking about slow burn spice stuff. If a story is well written and pulls me in these days, I’m ok w book one not having spice.
But this is just painfully slow. Slow like a lumbering bear walking thru a thick wood forest after waking from a winter’s hibernation slow.

Boring slow. Getting all the details of their meals, thoughts, outfits and yes, body hairs slow.

I see what the author has tried to do here. But slow burn doesn’t have to be snail’s pace.

Author uses the miscommunication trope way too much here. And has layered on way too many problems for this book. Fmc has a rejected mate married to her sis who is now preg and seeking help from her “maybe soon to be mate” to expand their pack territory; she has a random stalker, she has a creepy co worker who her mates all seem to just ignore and not be bothered by how creepy he is with her, she has such extreme mental health issues she should probably be hospitalized and her wolf is an utter c u n t.

Author is also inconsistent with story details. And that’s bad when I am picking up on those details bc I speed read. I started picking up on that and then went back and started hilighting the inconsistencies.

Come on. FFS. A good alpha or beta reader would pick up on these things.

I am sort of convinced there are indie authors out here just writing and editing their work all by themselves and maybe tossing ARCS out after they are done. Gurl. Get you some excellent alpha and beta readers. Sheesh.
