Revenge might be a dish best served cold, but this hot lich is bringing ribbons and a sharp axe. Having successfully stolen half the souls of Fairhaven out from under her rival's pretentious undead nose, Maud must now find homes for all her new pets. But the living are much noisier than the dead, and as if that wasn't vexing enough, the self-appointed lich king has just unleashed a zombie plague onto the land, threatening both Maud's patience and her wool supply.
Sometimes, to earn your peace and quiet, you just have to pop on a nice dress and go to war. New undead adventures await, more murder, more mayhem, and definitely more abominable crafting. Lich, Please is a grisly slice-of-life fantasy with ample gore.
🟢 Pros: Lovable female lead. Wholesome if grimdark plot. Mentions of great fabrics and embroidery. Crafting!
🔴 Cons: Suffers from middle book syndrome. Things to get a bit repetitive.
💭 Thoughts: Maud is back, looking fabulous as always in her embroidered dresses and silk pantaloons! And this time she is out for revenge! A pompous, egotistical, frozen ass of a Lich sits on the throne of her kingdom, and she is not going to let that stand! Oh no, this is her kingdom, her forest, and her very annoying and needy humans. She will take his constipated over-inflated ass down one quirky and unexpected step at a time!!! Revenge is best served in a corset embroidered with venom green vines!!
⏳ Final Comments: I thought this was going to be the final installment of the series and was wondering how the author would manage to expand the story to a 4th book (which now I don’t even know if it will be the final book), but somehow, she manages it by taking unexpected turns that she does skillfully weave and make total sense. I was afraid the story would be dragged out, which it is in the second book but not in this one, and I will be happily waiting for the next installment. Do not hesitate to pick up this series, it is so unique and fun, its own brand of comfort reading and I love coming back to it, especially after disappointing books. 3.5 stars.
Lich, Please sees our heroine, Maud, facing a zombie plague set by a fellow lich, Janvier--this one a little less interested in knitting and cats, and a little more in dominating the world through the power of the souls of the undead. Maud continues to be an unforgettable character: she's smart, funny, brave, reckless, and quietly heroic. Maud never moralizes or congratulates herself for doing the right thing--she just does it, because it feels right to her. My other favorite thing about this book is the tone, which strikes an unconventional but totally successful balance between the gruesome and the hilarious. This was a true five star read for me, and I highly recommend this series for anyone looking for a great humorous fantasy read!
I loved this series! Imagine a hedge witch who accidently becomes a powerful undead. She continues to love to knit, garden, craft, and make potions, only now she crafts with dead bodies, and her potions are made with undead ingredients. All she wants to do is live in peace in her quiet cottage working on her crafting. All others want to do is kill her. In book one we see her deal with conflicts with the local barony. In book 2 she deals with another undead Lich and his kingdom. In books 3, 4, and 5 she manages disputes with the fae queen of summer and other powerful characters. The dry humor in this story is delightful, especially when it comes to her knitting and embroidery. I highly recommend this series.
Lich, Please is the third and I felt best part in the series so far. Maud continues to be a phenomenal character and it’s a delight that as she gets stronger and smarter, the stakes and spectacle of the story really grow. Super excited some of the hilarious side characters from Fairhaven also featured in this! A bunch of laugh out loud moment, but also some seriously heartfelt and beautiful moments - like when Maud moves over her phylactery! 😭❤️ As always, the balance and contrast between frilly fashion and dark gore works so well in this. The ending to thsi was disgustingly satisfying (we wanted this moment :p) but I also cannot wait to see where the next one goes! 💀🌸
These books are so well written, so fun and absorbing. I hope HJ Tolson understands how important this type of fun escapism is these days. The world feels like it’s ablaze, but maybe there is a hero like Maude out there? It’s fun to at least think about. My eyes normally glaze over during a battle scene, regardless of media type, but I literally cheered out loud during the ‘big battle scene’. Also, of course these are perfect to listen to while crafting. Many hours of fun knits have come together while listening to this fantastic series.
I had a great time following Maud's adventures as she went to war against her rival. I enjoyed her continued exploration of her necromantic powers and the juxtaposition of her highly creative applications of them vs Janvier's more traditional lich king style. There were some fun twists and turns, and now I'm curious to see how it all plays into the next book.
Book 3 of this series continues to entertain! The narrator for the audible version is perfect for the MC, Maude, and her attitude. I've enjoyed the series and would give this one 5 stars, but the story feels just a continuation of "more of the same" - there's not a lot of twists, turns, or any surprises. It's Maud against the "bad guy" and how she rises to the challenge. Regardless, its a fun listen and well worth the investment if you're a fan of dark fantasy with humor mixed in.
Saves 9? Maud and Javier duke it out! More crafting and crushing. Why can't they just leave a lich alone. Generally speaking a good book, though Maud takes too much time with villainous monologues and revenge schemes. The best revenge is an enemy dead. Tom out
This has a good story and a good setting. It has interesting characters and an overarching idea that has depth. It is marred by a main character that has a child's attention span, no direction and is only still kicking through plot armor.
Another fun filled sequel. This one had far more action, and more satisfying scenes than the previous. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the previous 2.
A good third entry, although the premise of going up against a big villain necessarily takes away from a lot of Maud’s slice-of-life content, which is what I’m reading for.
Never underestimate Maude. Mr Smarty Pants maybe isn’t as smart as he thinks! I’m also kinda waiting to see where Maude’s special tree ends up in the story…an odd couple, but pretty neat.
Ends the first trilogy in style. Some parts of the story didn't quite make sense, but I guess it should be read like a fun, cozy fantasy read, so I can forgive some plot holes. :)
I can't believe I am going to say this but I think there was too much fighting. I think the character does better with more banter than just long action sequences.
