I've been promising myself a reread of this series for a long time so decided this is the year for it. Great to find this book was every bit as good as I remembered.
I loved being back at Beach View Boarding House with Peggy Reilly and her family. Peggy is one of my book heroines. She loves her family, they are her life and she's also a wonderful neighbour. When war strikes she's first in the queue to take in waifs and strays. We'll meet a lot of different people as the series progresses but this time she takes in Sally and her brother Ernie who are evacuated from London. Sally is sixteen but allowed to go with her brother as he needs care having suffered polio as a child. They soon settle down and start to enjoy life. Ron, Peggy's father-in-law lives with them and he's a great character, full of fun and mischief, ably assisted by his dog Harvey.

This was a sweet book to read. It was the first in a very long series by this author. It’s all about a family who run a boarding house by the sea and they take I two evacuees from the East End during the Second World War.
It was gentle and an easy read that sort of book I like to read now and again and as I enjoyed it so much I’ll probably read the second one in this series.

I absolutely loved this book and managed to read it in three days. I would recommend it to anyone who really wants to feel like you are a part of the story and are actually living with the characters.
It didn't beat around the bush and was true to the harshness of the war without making it sugar coated like I find some books do.
It was nice to have a romance and for once for it to be a second sort of storyline and not take the attention of the whole book. Overall I loved this book.
Just ordered the rest of the series!

I was first introduced to Ellie Dean's Beach View Boarding House Series this past summer when I was presented with an advance reader's copy of Book #9, Sealed With A Loving Kiss, and I was immediately captivated by the endearing cast of characters as well as Dean's emotionally compelling writing style. Although it read well as a stand alone novel, I immediately knew I had to go back a begin with the first book in this series and I was not disappointed in the least! This first installment is set against the early days of World War II and the children of London are being evacuated to the countryside. As a mother, I can't even begin to imagine what this must have been like, however, for Sally and Ernie, their mother doesn't seem to be particularly bothered at all and fails to even see her children off. At sixteen years old, Sally has had to grow up quickly and has become her brother's primary care provider while their father serves his country. Fortunately, Peggy Reilly has enough love in heart and a room to spare, and quickly embraces these young Londoners. Filled with love, hope, and the endearing bonds of friendship amid the onset of war, "There'll Be Blue Skies" is a compelling story that has left me anxious to continue on to the next book in this series! Keep the box of tissue close at hand; this one is sure to tug at your heart!

I had high hopes for this book after numerous recommendations and it did not disappoint.
Set at the beginning of World War II the story starts with 16 year old Sally and her Brother Ernie who has been left crippled by polio at an early age. They are evacuated from the slum in London's East End to Cliffehaven a fictional town on England's South Coast. Left until last to be picked by the people accommodating evacuee's probably because of Ernie's disability and threatened to be split up and Ernie placed in an orphanage (which Sally outright refuses) they stand and wait, and luckily for them sometimes the best things do come to those that wait when Peggy the proprietor of Beach View Boarding house comes and doesn't blink twice at taking them both.
Sally has always been the main carer for her Brother due to their Mum Florrie's drinking and partying ways and their Father being away with at sea. Sally acts older than her years and she feeds, cleans, provides for Ernie and makes sure he has all his therapy and medication.
At Cliffehaven though they are welcomed in to a very warm, traditional, cosy, tight knit family and Peggy tries to encourage Sally to let others take some responsibility which results in her dream becoming true of setting up a small seamstress business alongside her factory job where she also gains promotion. As the bombing starts and the men go to War things start to drastically change at Cliffhaven and the book follows the effect it has.
The characterisation is wonderful and so well portrayed and you can't help but have your favourites.
It's a tale of disaster and triumphs as you route for all the characters. We have the devastating effects of War but also romance along the way.
It's not taxing and you don't get bogged down with War facts. it's an easy, cosy read and the pages just flew by. I really enjoyed the story and consider myself lucky to have all the rest of the books in the series to go at because I can only expect it to get better.
If I can't stop reading a book and go through the whole emotions of happy and laughing to choked and teary well that can only deserve the full 5 star rating and I don't give them very often.
Thank you Ellie Dean I am looking forward to all the others now.

I was 5 yrs old when WWII started. Ms. Dean brought back so many memories. I was born in the suburb of Edmonton North London, I was evacuated to a small village in Bedfordshire. I was fortunate to be billeted to a good family.
Ms. Dean researched well, and I thank her for portrayal of a very difficult time. The characters were very true to life, I live in the states and have done for years, I will recommend this book to my Brit friends.

I picked this up at our local free books case. Definitely not a genre I would normally read, I don’t even know how to describe the genre: ‘sugary sweet world war 2 pulp’ ? (See the book cover , it kind of says it all)
The goodies are good and the baddies are very bad. Extremely predictable, but still somehow it was entertaining enough to keep reading and didn’t require too much brain activity, which is nice after a tiring day at work.
I won’t be running to read the other 19 (!) or so books in the series (the Cosy WW 2 genre seems to be popular), but if I see another one at the free stand I possibly would take it with me. (The series might just turn into my new guilty pleasure)

I loved this book, it was gripping and I found I could not put it down and it made me cry in parts - always the sign o a good book! however I did think towards the end it started to boarder on cheesy and it seemed to just end which annoyed me, though I did discover there are sequels, which I will be buying right away. Overall a really good book!

Very enjoyable

I think I loved this book most of all because of the interesting characters and how the story intertwined to make for a really good read. I also liked how the historical time period was written in vivid detail. I could see in my minds eye the beauty of an English seaside village and then also the horrors of war. Very well done.

Ook alweer een prachtig boek!! Fijn geschreven je krijgt echt een band met de personages, of juist niet hahah. Ik heb vlak hiervoor de laatste boekenwinkel van Londen gelezen, ook oorlog in Londen. Dat vind ik net iets mooier, maar misschien omdat ik dat eerder las en dat het 1e boek over de oorlog in Londen? Hoe dan ook…dit is ook zeer zeker de moeite waard om te lezen!

4,75 ⭐️ Er komen steeds meer boeken met het oorlogsthema. En maar goed ook in een wereld die steeds grimmiger wordt. Sally heb ik in mijn hart gesloten evenals de moederlijke Peggy. Ik denk dat mij dit boek zo charmeert door de goede personage beschrijvingen, de duidelijke textuur van de oorlogs jaren, en zo kan ik nog wel even door gaan.

Blz. 182: “Ernie maakte haar midden in de nacht wakker, huilend van de pijn in zijn rug en benen. Sally rende naar de keuken om een stenen kruik te vullen. Ze wikkelde hem in een deken en liet hem er dicht tegenaan kruipen terwijl ze hem weer in slaap masseerde. “

Sally, en nog maar 16 jaar oud meisje, heeft de zorg voor haar broertje Ernie, moeder vind feesten leuker, en vader zit op zee, die polio heeft en hierdoor gedeeltelijk verlamd is. Genoeg op haar bordje zou je denken, maar tijdens de Blitz krieg op Londen worden ze naar het platteland gestuurd. Sally kan gelukkig terecht bij Peggy, die door de handicap van Ernie heenkijkt, en kan terecht in een fabriek om te werken door de referentie brief van haar vorige baas.

Wat een vrouwen waren dat in die moeilijke periode. De spil waar alles om draaide. Wat moet het moeilijk geweest zijn voor hun om weer terug te vallen in hun oude rollen als huisvrouw en moeder, hoewel enkele sterke personen dat niet hebben gedaan en vast hebben gehouden aan hun vrijheden en verdworven statussen.

Bij het zien van de schitterende cover van Een nieuw begin van Ellie Dean wil je weten wie de kinderen op de cover zijn en waarom de jongen met een stok loopt. Deze cover past net zo goed bij het boek als de originele cover. De titel maakt nieuwsgierig, je wilt weten wat ermee bedoeld wordt. De Nederlandstalige titel past net zo goed bij het boek als de originele titel. Meestal is het beter om de titel letterlijk te vertalen, maar in dit geval is dit ook een goede keuze wat titel aangaat.
Een nieuw begin van Ellie Dean gaat over twee kinderen die moeten evacueren vanuit Londen naar een kustplaatsje tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, omdat het in Londen te gevaarlijk voor ze wordt. Sally voedt haar broertje al op sinds hij nog maar net geboren is, waardoor ze zich al op jonge leeftijd volwassen moest gedragen en een sterk verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel met haar mee draagt. Haar broertje kan sinds dat hij herstelt is van polio niet meer goed lopen en heeft daardoor heel veel hulp nodig. Ze gaan naar een kustplaatsje. Eenmaal daar aangekomen, blijkt dat niemand de twee kinderen samen wil hebben, ze willen alleen Sally en haar wordt aangeraden om Ernie in een weeshuis te stoppen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was given the fourth book in this series for Christmas so found out the first one. I really enjoyed the storyline and I loved the characters. I especially loved the war time setting and how it was more focused on the impacts of those at home rather than those away fighting. I can’t wait to continue with the series

I really enjoyed this book, it was almost a guilty pleasure; I was not expecting to have such a positive experience reading this. I felt as though I knew the characters personally and truly cared what happened to them. I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

Ellie Dean has a fine writing style. She makes you feel you’re there with them and I’m damn glad I’m not!! I love my food 😜

Je craignais que ce livre, que l'on m'avait prêté, soit une petite bleuette mais, heureuse surprise, ce n'est pas que cela. Même si cette histoire, pas toujours bien traduite, regorge de bons sentiments, cette lecture était plaisante. Les personnages sont attachants et surtout, j'ai aimé le contexte historique. Le roman se déroule pendant la guerre, dans une petite ville côtière anglaise où sont évacués des enfants londoniens. On sent bien l'atmosphère, les privations, les peurs, les amitiés, les heures passées dans les abris pour se protéger des bombes et fait rare, l'auteure aborde la retraite des troupes britanniques du piège de Dunkerque.
Cela ferait une bonne série télé !

Une atmosphère bien spéciale règne à la pension du bord de mer : entre sirènes d'alerte et jeux d'enfants. Sally, une ado refugiée de Londres s'occupe de son petit frère atteint de la polio. Elle est couturière et mène une vie bien austère jusqu'à sa rencontre avec John. Personnages émouvants et annecdotes amusantes : une lecture bien agréable pour moi, qui n'aime d'habitude pas les romans sur la guerre.

Mooi verhaal, maar ik vond het erg traag lezen. Het einde ontvouwde zich dan weer heel snel, maar dat kon mijn aandacht niet echt meer trekken. Het personage van Peggy vond ik het beste neergezet. En van zo'n vrouw ga je tijdens het lezen van het boek gewoon houden. Haar personage kon ik het meeste waarderen in dit boek en dat sleepte me er doorheen.

I wanted to reread the first few books in what was the Beachview (later Cliffehaven) series to see why I loved it enough to stick with it. Was Peggy always an overbearing, nosy, hypocritical busy body? Was Ron always a big pain in the ass? So what better place to start than book one.
We meet Sally and Ernie in book one and I always found parts of her story disturbing even more so reading the second time around. Sally is sixteen when the book begins, seventeen when it ends. Her love interest is twenty two, a widower and no one bats an eye at a twenty two year old chasing after a sixteen year old who's described as looking more like fourteen. Eww. The fact that they marry and have at least one child by the end of the series is also just icky. Peggy keeps telling Sally she needs to have fun, but pushes her to date and become serious with such an older man instead of you know doing normal teenaged things like going to movies and dances and going on dates with more age appropriate boys. I get Sally is a very mature girl but it just seems creepy to me.
As for Peggy and Ron they seem to have fallen victim to something a lot of major characters in long running series do. Basically they become caricatures of themselves. While Peggy is pushy at times like when she pushed and encouraged Sally and John to get together, she's not as obnoxious about it as she is in later books and seems more of a listener and respectful of boundaries. This was the Peggy I loved and sorely missed the longer the series went in. As for Ron, he's also different. He still groans about being forced to do work, but you see his good side especially when he's around Ernie and his grandsons and while in later books I despised him at times this reminded me of who he really was. As for Jim, he's still useless and unlikeable as ever. Though I will say both he and Doris are the only ones who showed positive growth in later books. They started as caricatures and became more fleshed out later on. Doris was full on Mrs. Hyacinth Bucket here. Jim is an outrageous flirt and maybe that's why Peggy later encourages and seems fine with Sarah cheating on her fiance who's being starved and tortured by the Japanese, something I'll never forgive either of these women for. Poor Phillip, he deserved better.
I remembered a lot about this book considering I read it nearly fourteen years ago. Sally cleaning up after Ernie wets the bed the first night, how Sally and John met during a random German fighter strafing the promenade.
I'm still confused why in October 1939 the Americans had a random base of soldiers in Cliffehaven while the Canadians who were actually there almost from the start get barely any mention. You had a country from overseas right there if you wanted to talk about men from far away with funny accents, and yet you still go with the guys who didn't get there until late 1941, troops probably didn't land until 42? Maybe this is another author with the dumb reasoning that Canada took so long to join, there's been a couple of books with that ridiculous statement. Ten days, compared to three years. Our prime minister had to consult his dead mother okay? These things take time! (read Tim Cook's War Lords if you want that story.) But overall it was nice to remember what made me pick up this series and keep reading it til the end despite the many frustrations I would later have. I did remember not liking the first book that much and while it was much better than later ones I remember book two with Danuta and book three where we meet Rita being my favourites. Still it was nice to see that Peggy and Ron actually were decent kind people once, before the series began to fall off a cliff.

In het eerste deel van deze serie maken we kennis met Sally en haar broertje Ernie. Hun vader is steeds aan het werk, hun moeder kijkt niet naar hen om. Ernie is ook nog eens gehandicapt waardoor hij deels afhankelijk is van Sally. Wanneer de oorlog uitbreekt wil Sally er alles aan doen om Ernie veilig te houden. Ook als ze daarvoor moeten vluchten naar een onbekende plek.

Aan het begin van het verhaal kon ik maar moeilijk een band scheppen met Sally. De hoofdpersoon vond ik een beetje verwaand en te wantrouwig. Later in het verhaal wordt duidelijk waarom Sally zo'n houding aanneemt. Haar liefde voor Ernie gaat dusdanig ver, dat ze alles voor hem zou doen.
Het is ook fijn om eens een verhaal uit de ogen van de burger te lezen die met zijn/haar eigen problemen kampt. De auteur heeft geprobeerd om de nevenfiguren ook een belangrijke rol te laten spelen en dat is zeker gelukt. De nevenfiguren zijn namelijk volle karakters die allemaal hun momentje in het verhaal verkrijgen. De auteur heeft haar best gedaan om elk personage een eigen plekje te geven waar ze even met de spotlights gaan lopen.
De schrijfstijl is zeer toegankelijk en het boek leest ook vlot weg. Het is aangenaam te lezen zonder dat het emotioneel zwaar beladen aanvoelt. Hier en daar was het misschien iets te simplistisch geschreven. Een iets volwassenere ondertoon had gemogen. Hoewel Sally maar 17 jaar oud is, komt zij als personage zeer volwassen over. Haar manier van spreken en dergelijke meer, lijkt hier niet altijd mee te matchen.
De setting had af en toe wat meer aangedikt mogen worden, maar over het algemeen past deze prima bij het verhaal. Met momenten was het de sfeer die zorgde voor een aangrijpend moment. Hoewel het boek niet zo zeer emotioneel beladen is, leef je als lezer toch mee met de personages.
Naast de plot zijn er ook veel nevenverhalen die soms wat ver uitwijken. Hoewel deze vooral bijdragen tot de ontwikkelen van de personages, lijken ze weinig te doen voor de plot.
Het einde was grotendeels onverwacht en zeker welkom. Helaas miste ik een soort van epiloog over hoe het met Sally ging na de oorlog. Daar blijf je als lezer een beetje met honger zitten.

Het is een zeer fijne historische roman. De auteur wordt vaak vergelijken met Diney Costeloe en daar stem ik als lezer zeker mee in. De schrijfstijl, keuze van plot en manier van brengen zijn sterk te vergelijken. Ik vond het in ieder geval een zeer fijn boek om te lezen.
