Ted Darling #19

No Way to Say Goodbye

Rate this book
A baby snatched from a park in broad daylight.

An elderly man reported missing, together with the proceeds of a lucrative house sale.

A death by arson.

Three simultaneous cases to challenge DCI Ted Darling’s Serious Crime team.

Because of similar child abductions in other force areas, a new face joins the team – DI Oscar Smith, from the Metropolitan Police. Even his own boss warns Ted that the man can be as much a bane as a blessing.

Then Ted is called away to attend a meeting which might bring one of his open cases to a satisfactory conclusion.

'Sell the Pig' is the first in a series of travel memoirs describing how Lesley, writing as Tottie Limejuice, decided to make the move from the UK to France to start a new life, taking with her an 89-year-old mother suffering from vascular dementia. The story continues in three further books, 'Is That Billinge Lump?' 'Mother, Was It Worth It?' 'Biff the Useless Mention', and 'Angling Bumateurs'. There's an additional standalone prequel to the series, Trot On!, about her time running a holiday riding centre in Wales, before her move to France.

Lesley is also the not-so-secret writer behind the pen-name of Carl Granger. The book Looking for Lulu is darker crime fiction.

Lesley is a former journalist, working as both a criminal court and coroner's court reporter. She also worked as a case tracker for the Crown Prosecution Service, and for a firm investigating irregularities in offshore finance. Her other jobs have included owning and running a holiday riding centre and acting as a 'charity mugger', lying in wait to sign up shoppers for a wildlife charity.

Lesley's interests centre around nature and wildlife and encompass dogs, wild camping and organic gardening. She lives in the Auvergne region of Central France and holds dual French/British nationality. Her current dogs are two rescued border collies

As procedurals go, this was definitely up to the author's standards and the insertion of an abrasive new secondary PD character helped up the workplace tensions nicely. I rather missed Trev and the cats as very little of this book focused on Ted's home-life and relationships ... but given the rather shocking ending, I have a feeling things might change for the next book.

Disappointed in the ending

The Ted Darling series almost never disappoints, but “No Way to Say Goodbye” ends with a cliffhanger. The author should have started the next Darling book with the ending she used in this book. I hate cliffhangers!

One of the best things about the Darling series, in my opinion, is the give and take between Ted and the members of his investigative team. There was not very much of that this time because Ted is dealing with DI Oscar Smith, who was brought in from another area to work with Ted on a case similar to a couple in Smith’s precinct. I hope there’s a little less of Smith in the next book, although his character is not all that meets the eye.

I always look forward to a new Ted Darling book and this one is another cracker. Lesley M Krier is never afraid of tackling heart wrenching topics and is always topical. The Met have dealt with similar cases and have sent one of their Detectives to act in an advisory capacity to Ted's Team. There are some tense moments arising from this. It's another fast paced page turner and It's always good to catch up with the team. I did miss Trev though - I'm a Trev fan. But that ending - I now have to wait until the next book. Aaargh!

Most of the Ted Darling books are immensely enjoyable, with ‘A Woman’s Heart’ being the author’s best, in my opinion. However, ‘No Way to Say Goodbye’ just left me frustrated.

It’s a cliffhanger - and I hate cliffhangers. Nothing worse than spending several hours reading a book only to find that it has no ending.

The inclusion of bully detective DI Oscar Smith was baffling. The cases were intriguing enough on their own, and could have been woven together better to provide a satisfying ending. Instead, Ted spends too much time and effort trying to reel in DI Smith, and consequently, misses important clues. Also in this installment, Ted’s husband Trev is shoved to the back burner, barely getting a couple of Ted’s “sorry I’ll be late” phone calls. Even Professor Nelson’s appearance in autopsy is brief.

To me, it felt like the usual rich details of the cases and the process of solving them were sacrificed to make room for an insufferable intruder. I hope that future installments keep DCI Ted Darling and DI Oscar Smith on their own turfs.

Good to read the next instalment in the adventures of DCI Ted Darling

This is a British crime series that stands out from the rest; L M Krier is an expert at drawing readers into the tight-knit world of DCI Ted Darling, his team, and the baddies they deal with.
Definitely best to begin at Book 1, as characters, relationships and settings develop throughout the series.
Ted is not your average copper and, though he'd probably be embarrassed by the description, increasingly loveable.
As always, this story moves along at a fast pace with plenty of twists and turns to keep us on our toes. This time, there's the added interest of a tetchy DI from London on secondment, and the uneasy alliance he and Ted grapple with.
And a typically L M Krier cliffhanger ending to keep us eagerly waiting for next year's book.
If you like reading British crime, this series offers many hours of light, easy reading and entertainment.

Love, love this book. Even like Oscar, even if he is a jerk. The story was compelling and exciting. The characters are familiar, but we really don't read much of the ancillary ones--the story revolves around Oscar and Ted. Enjoyed it and definitely recommend reading it. Now, I have a complaint--I hated the ending!!!! My family enjoyed laughing at me when I got to the ending...but I will wait for the next one anxiously.

it would have been 5 stars, except…

(This my be considered a spoiler by some so if you hate having any hint, you should stop reading.)

…I truly despise cliffhangers! The main story was tied up. The side story vanished about two-thirds of the way through. The end upset me. I would honestly prefer a long book for a higher price without the cliffhangers.

Good read as ever.

You are a devil Ms Krier leaving us in suspense like this, but this was a very believable police procederal story as most of her books are. More about the case and the police than her other books which tend to have a lot of content with regart to Ted and Trevs home life, but although i love all her books this one in my opinion was among her very best.

Wow. I need the next book now.

Wow. I need the next book now.

I was on tenterhooks hooks all the way along.

Wasn’t sure about Oscar Smith, but he grew on me.

Would have liked more about the rest of the team in the story, but it was a fantastic read as always.

More Smith please!

I really like the juxtaposition of Smith and Ted. As always, I have one complaint about this book. It ended too quickly and now I have to wait for the next one! Might have to re-read the whole series while I wait.

Definitely a page Turner with lots of twists.
DCI Ted Darling is joined with DI Oscar Smith from London on a case and they are a team to be reckoned with.
But the story leaves you on a cliff hanger which I hate so definitely can't wait for the next one.

Brilliant Ted Darling series

Yet another excellent read in series. Liked introduction of new character Oscar and the exact opposite to Ted. Thoroughly enjoyed it but the end not at all expected. To be continued! Hope it's not a long wait for next instalment.
