Visions of Evil #1

Sweetest Evil

Rate this book
Lana Glenn has no idea who she is, or where she came from. Glenn isn’t even her real name - it’s just a name given to her by the evil monsters, who adopted her when she was five years old. With no memories before that, and an existence that has done nothing but rip away piece after piece of her for the last nineteen years, she is lost, and now - following a devastating loss - completely alone in the world.
With no choice but to flee everything she knows, she finds herself scared and alone, sleeping on the rough streets of a city that will swallow her whole, given half a chance. Seeking refuge from the dangers of the streets, she stumbles into a homeless shelter where she happens upon two volunteers - Joel and West - who give her a sense of something she had long since forgotten – safety.
Drawn to them in a way she can’t begin to understand or explain, she gives in when they offer her help and friendship. When she meets their other brothers - Malik and Gio - and finds that same draw to both of them too, she starts to feel as though she’s losing her mind. But the link she feels to all four of them is impossible to ignore, no matter how hard she tries to fight it.
Just when Lana begins to feel as though she is finding her first steps to move forward, enemies she was completely unaware of show themselves, and turn everything she thought she knew on its head. The very small part of herself she was clinging on, to is ripped away, and the question of who she is doesn’t seem so important, because now she is wondering what she is?
Can she trust the four guys who are claiming to be linked to her? Can they really protect her from the monsters who will stop at nothing to erase her from this world? Or will she be their ruin? They say she is good, but evil lurks within her and she knows it. Everyone she has ever cared for has been taken from her by that evil, and now she is falling for these guys, hard. Can they do what no other has done before, and survive her curse?

this author is such a hit or miss for me (and usually a miss). this book seems like one of her earlier ones… the writing wasn’t great, and i didn’t love how weak the fmc seemed, despite her continually saying she was strong for surviving the streets. very meh.

It was OKAY... Not the best of her books but for the most part, the language was better and there were less errors than in her other books. I already have the second book, so I may as well read it...

Oh man, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive.
Lana is dull as can be and so damn naive. At first it's a tolerable, since she has very little life experience, though it's not really explained how.
She's 24 years old.. She had a job and yet it took her 6 months to save enough money to buy a crappy cell phone for her brother. What exactly is she doing with the rest of her time?
Her brother was 13, it's not like she had to watch him like a toddler

If the evil parents let her get a crappy job why not a better one?
If she was away from the house with her own money (via job) why would she still be barely eating and have never experienced ordering food?

Further more, when she's sitting on the couch in shock and freezing after an altercation why would she take her coat off and lay it on the couch then sit there chilled?
It's so dumb and I had enough.
Definately not the book or author for me.

need more

I love this authors work, and this was no different. I didn’t realize that this was kinda PNR with fated mates vibe!! I loved that aspect and the twist at the end I did not see coming! I can’t wait for book two!

Kerry Taylor writes SUCH slay wounded bird trope/ 'insta-love' reverse harems. I think this is the first one of hers that I've read of hers that's a paranormal romance, but I really liked it. I love the fated-together trope in reverse harems, especially when it's like the girl is the "center" of their group and helps bolster their powers. This was an easy, quick read and I recommend it if you liked the Evelyn Maynard Trilogy or Seraph Black.

Love the plot

The plot and characters are all really likeable and you want to get to know more about them as you read. There are some things plot wise that made it a bit hard for me to get fully invested. I'd still suggest giving it a chance, it might be your next favorite series.

Lana has been abused for years by her adopted parents, after her adopted father and brother die in an accident, Lana is finally free, but with no place to go ends up in a homeless shelter, where she ends up meeting 4 hot guys who are instantly drawn to her. But they have secrets and abilities. The world Taylor has created is interesting, and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next, especially after that ending…

The vast majority of this book was spent on having the FMC experiencing either a panic attack, a traumatic flashback/nightmare, an episode of self-loathing, or severe denial/lack of awareness of herself. All of which would then lead to several pages where some of the harem men would reassure/compliment her. They didn't actually deal with event or the underlying cause but just kept telling her positive things about her, such as she is sweet, kind, blah blah. I could skip pages at a time and not miss anything. I started to have to skip chunks because it was so repetitive.

The flashback/nightmares didn't have anything to do with the plot or help the book along. They only seemed to be in the book to keep hammering home how traumatic the FMC upbringing was. I don't know about you, but I don't need overly long and detailed accounts of different kinds abuse over and over again to drive home the point. I got it the first time. She lived through some bad shit. She should be seeing a mental health worker (which wasn't even suggested).

Which leads to another problem, I can't see someone who survives such horrible abuse (mental, emotional, and physical) to still be so sweet and open. Her personality is also the typical pigeonholing of women, to be sweet, shy, kind, nurturing, submissive but also a touch fiery in a super sweet/protective way. It seems unrealistic to say the least. Hell, all the people I know who had great trauma-free childhoods couldn't even pretend to be like this.

I really enjoyed the world the author set-up in this book.

Lana grew up abused by her foster family. powers, after a traumatic event she runs away. She had it rough and ends up in a shelter seeking help. There she meets two men who completely change her life. She finds out that she isn't human and she is bonded to four amazing men: Malik (leader), West (gentle giant), Gio (ex manwhore), and Joel (healer) . They all have different powers, and Lana amplifies their powers and recharges them. The men work together to nourish Lana back to health. The personalities of the men were a bit too gentle for me and as such all the men kid of sounded the same. I wish they give her space but also made a few more moves -> slow slow burn.

Really interesting world, and the story line. However, there were a few things that didn't make much sense. For one, Lana's innocence at times didn't match her experiences. She went to school and read romance books as she noted so she isn't completely unaware of things. As such her "innocence" seems extremely exaggerated at times. She is 24! Along the same line her physical abuse seems above the top since she dis go to school wouldn't have anyone ever noticed? The author's description of Lana in the beginning sounded way too childlike and was a huge turnoff and I almost stopped reading. Again she can be petite but she is a 24 year old woman. Thankfully the author dropped that tone. Also, I did skip over a few paragraphs as Lana's abuse and her insecurities were very repetitive. I liked how Joel could access her dreams and I wished the author showed more abuse through that instead of just Lana's inner monolog. I think that it could have bonded two of them in more ways - like scars with Gio. Lastly, her peanut allergy was absolutely pointless and nonsensical. For me it actually took away from the story as her kind can't have allergies (ie. she has peanut allergy because she was abused?).

The ending was great and something unexpected! Definitely picking up next one.

Great Storyline

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book so I grabbed it. The story itself is so freaking good. The writer has done a good job of building the world, describing places and people so you can actually see them. And it doesn’t really stall once Lana finds her guys, the relationship develops really well. What I did find annoying was how often the conversation of how attractive Lana was to the MMCs came up. For a few chapters she gets scared or unsure of her place and she runs and hides, then the guys have to coax her out of her self doubt. And it’s endless platitudes of how great she is. It’s endearing maybe twice, pushing it at 3 times. I had to skim several chapter’s because it just felt like mindless filler. Now once we got through that there’s quite a bit of action. Love me some action! Then the cliffy! OMG I wasn’t sure I was going to continue the series but Kerry Taylor dragged me right back into the story. I love that these characters are adults. I mean Lana’s stunted from her childhood somewhat but still they are all mid 20s and that’s such a refreshing turn when everyone writes about high school aged characters. These books aren’t typically for that age range so it’s kinda cringy! I am excited to learn more about this world and see where these events lead the characters. I would say this book could be a 10 star book if there was editing for all the fluff nonsense, and more dedication given to more history about the characters past, the place they come from, history about the threats they face. Even just their lives when they were building their businesses. Also spoiler-there’s a receptionist that’s a huge em jerk, that could have been written a bit better, expanded upon and really been a better angst angle, it seemed contrived and thrown in for drama effect, but it did not hit the mark. Off to the next book! Fingers crossed it keeps the momentum form these last few chapters!

this was so trashy….i ATE it up

🌟okay we have sweet ole lana who bless her heart cannot stop crying to save her life. she had a bad childhood so i GET it, girl has had it rough but aren’t you dehydrated by now? You meet these four guys and want to rub up against them and purr on day two? i mean i get it but also, calm deownnnn.

onto our guys:
•malik: the more reserved (but not really) spender of the group
•joel: our doctor and empath who is the sweetie from the start
•gio: the ex playboy who is a mixture of all the guys perfectly
•west: the biggest and the second sweetest

~so far, personality wise, its hard to differentiate between the guys which is a big hit or miss in rh. this story is truly like a trashy prime drama that you just cannot stop watching. is it perfect? not even remotely close. but am i giggling? u bet ur ass. will i think about this series probably ever again? nope prolly not. but will i read every book and love it? i probably will indeed

🤎that cliffy was kinda interesting though i will admit…im interested to see how the situation will be rectified and where the new added character will come into the situation .

Some issues, mind the cliffie

So, I understand having trauma, triggers, and anxiety, but Lana cries constantly. It's not even just the act of crying, but crying out, pleading, begging. She's whiny, and while I understand why, it was super frustrating that a different verb was never used. The word cry or some variation was used almost 50x. There are any number of words that could have been used instead. I hope she grows out of the weak character she is. I also was very dissatisfied with the OWD with Claudia. Lana asked no questions, even when Claudia insinuated a relationship, which just felt weird. I raised it to 4 stars for the unexpected cliffie that hooked me back in when I was planning on not immediately continuing the series.

Interesting idea poorly written.

Not my first book by this author and though I hadn’t finished the other books I tried either, I had to bail out a lot earlier with this one.

The writing honestly just feels juvenile and clunky, like a very complex creative writing assignment. You know the ones with chunks of character descriptions and unnecessary details. Meanwhile, the characters are cliche and the budding fantasy elements confusing. Not aided by the writing.

This is a pass for me, just needs to be developed into something more digestible.

good but hard read

FMC is constantly beat down and apologizing the whole time. It gets old really quick. I was hoping she’d be bitter and more aggressive after leaving a bad situation but instead she’s the type to accept what bad things people say and is mega insecure.
Steam factor of 1/10. Really slow build romance. They do mention a bulge once at the end of that helps at all.
Other than that I think the story will go somewhere good. I like the idea of it. Here’s hoping for more steam and less self pity in book 2

I would say about 40% of this book was just repetative dialogue and would not have made any difference to the book or plot if removed.
I get it, she is scared and has doubts about her worth and the guys, but please find different ways to show that, amd not just regurgorate the same conversation and sequence of events again and again and again.

I love a lot of the books by this author, but this, was just so long winded, and the only reason I went with three and not two stars was because I was intrigued enough to read book two (that luckily already is out).

Great Book

Sweetest Evil follows Lana as she escapes from her abusive past and meets four guys she seems to have an instant connection to. I really loved reading this book, the FMC was sweet and I loved seeing her start to come out of her shell throughout the book and the guys were all amazing. I loved the story, it pulled me in from the beginning and the cliffhanger at the end shocked me, I didn’t see it coming at all. Overall, a fantastic book that I would recommend reading.

I love this book, but there is to much I love you and bond talk we get the picture,I think more world building and background are needed but a decent enough read just to much repetition and emotional break downs I really want the f mc to be badass hopefully in the next book. I also want to hit them mc’s they brag about having the best software company, security, etc but don’t think to do a background check they didn’t even know the abusers names I’ll carry on reading but maybe a dnf for me eventually

Amazing!

Kerry outdid herself with this book! I know she doesn’t usually do PNR but you would not know although the FMC has gone through hell she is still coming back stronger. The thing I love is that she still has those scars and traumas and just because she found her men they don’t all go away, making it feel more realistic. I am beyond excited to keep reading this series and that cliffhanger has be rushing for the next book. Thank you for writing this book 🙏🫶🏽

Whew...

This was not good. I was determined to finish it for some character evolution or something to move the plot forward. There was no growth in anyone, the characters are the same in the beginning as they are in the end. The cliffhanger is supposed to draw you into the second book but it is so random, I cannot be bothered. Interesting premise but the execution needs more work.

An amazing read

I absolutely loved this book and am v much looking forward to book 2. I absolutely did not see that ending and the HUGE twist coming, and I am dying to find out more about the gifts, Lana and the Vis. This is a great read, with wonderful, fascinating world building and a different look at the supernatural. Brilliant!

I want to be in a Quin!

I love the idea of this book. How the paranormal is intertwined with the human world is really cool and different from what I have read before.

Lana is the sweetest and her men are perfect for her.

The book is well written and I am excited to read the next one!

It’s okay. There were noticeable typos. Evil foster mom kicks her out after brother and dad die. She’s homeless and is rescued by the MMCs who just want to spoil and take care of her. She is
the fates central to their quin, 4 guys 1 girl fated magic group.

This author writes fragile, tragic past FMCs that need protection and coddling and this is a paranormal version.

It’s probably just me expecting too much, but I hate it when one of the MMCs is a manwhore! (Even if it’s before they meet the FMC)

Didn’t read past 3%, but I assumed they would be mates to the FMC, so you’d think they’d wait until they her, before shagging around with other people.

Can’t these functional men keep it in their pants 🙄
