A shot rings out, piercing the night… Following her return from a case that has turned her world upside down, Special Agent Emily Slate finds herself sidelined once more because of circumstances beyond her control. Instead of focusing on the investigation that could lead to the woman who killed her husband, Emily is ordered to keep her distance, and assigned a murder in a small Chesapeake town. But when Emily arrives with newly-minted Special Agent Coll, they find themselves in the middle of a power struggle between two law enforcement departments, both accusing the other of improper conduct. And in the middle of it, a body that seems to have no answers. As Emily and Agent Coll examine what on the surface looks to be a random killing, they soon find dark desires are driving their killer. And when a second body is found, Emily realizes nothing about this case is by chance. But when she discovers a new revelation about her husband, Emily will find herself ripped between her duty to her job and her duty to the man she still loves. The killer is out there, and they haven’t missed their target yet.
Agent Emily Slate is back in the game again. Having made peace with her ex-husband's brother and wife, she is partnered with the hunky Agent Liam Coll whom she worked with in Virginia.
Well, to be honest, Agent Coll is her bodyguard, which burns a hole in Emily's side, but Director Simmons is insistant. And because of the situation with her house being under surveillance, Emily is being sent to the DelMarVa area to cover a murder.
Brady Sanford is shot after confessing to his wife, Summer, that he was having an affair. As they were leaving the restaurant, Brady is shot in the back of his head and Summer mysteriously disappears.
Emily and Coll walk in to World War II. The Sheriff of Nanticoke, Maryland and the Police Chief of Mardel, Delaware who share jurisdiction of the case, absolutely detest each other.
Their investigation gets complicated fast. Summer's body is found dead in the woods. Something decidedly strange is going on with the autopsy. Chief Barker appears to be highly cooperative but when Sheriff Black's son is implicated in the murder, things get out of hand.
Will the sparks between Slate and Coll light a fire? Who is really behind the murder of the Sanford's? And when everything settles out, what is waiting for Emily Slate at home? This is Alex Sigmore's best book yet, don't miss it.

I realize this is a work of fiction, and the incidents and (mis)deeds of individuals might be magnified as the story focuses on folks with, at least, personality disorders, but the author’s weaving of the tale is exceptionally engrossing.
That being said, I am not a particularly insightful reader - I’m hooked, tho!
This series gets better and better as it goes along. The writing is compelling and the story holds the reader's interest throughout.
Of course, we have the larger story arc outside of the case that drives the book, and we are all tuned into the life of Emily Slate. Once you are lured into Mr. Sigmore's parlor, you may as well have breached the event horizon of a black hole, because you are not coming out until after the very last word.
Simply, Alex has done it again: he improves exponentially with each iterative book.
Each book in this series is a standalone but they are interconnected. Have to say once these stories get going it's hard to put them down. The stories are each to follow yet the themes are twisted with intrigue and complex puzzles.
Great read lots of twists and turns and an unexpected twist at the end. I enjoy the ongoing development of the characters and how the central plot builds through the individual cases.
Excellent series, thus far. The only exception being every time Emily says, “I should’ve seen that”. It’s quite annoying in every, single, book. But other than that, I’m anxiously waiting to finish this story. I hope book 6 is the final chapter and Emily can start doing something else.
I have been reading this whole series, and love it. The plots are intricate and complex, so many ways to make a book exciting, and make you look forward to the next one.
I am hooked on Emily Slate FBI Mystery Thrillers. They are written with believability and sensitivity. Can't wait to read the next one. Alex Sigmore has a real talent to portray his characters. Can't help but to get drawn into their lives.
Following your favorite Agent in an immersive journey down the rabbit hole. Introducing a little romance in the mix ( which I could use a little more, Alex); you find yourself in a world of conflict, corruption and confusion. When you think you see closure in your sights you only find like magic you have been misdirected! Like Alice, you find yourself in an upside down world. Can they find their out? I won’t tell.. read it!
Small town rivalries threaten to upend a murder investigation. Emily and Agent Coll are sent into investigate. In the meantime Sara comes close to apprehending someone with information about Emily's husband's murder.
Satisfying read, fast paced,. Emily's musings got tiresome and the whole Matt murder conspiracy strained credibility. But the focus was mostly on the small town murders. Good read.
Emily Slate has been sidelined and assigned a new partner with whom she worked a previous case. There were some sparks previously. Will there be sparks now or is it still too soon after her husband's death to have feelings? These two agents work well together to solve the case. I love these books and can't wait to read the next one. I would recommend it.
Can't get enough of these books, plenty of action, great characters a little bit of humour. Just living this series and can't wait to read the next instalment. Love it when Emily is with Zara or Liam, after the bombshell at the end of the last book think she's going to need them
OMG. All I can say is this is a series you really need to read. To all mystery readers this is one series you will love. This series is full of suspense. You want to put the book down. I highly recommend this book and series.
Every ending is a new beginning. My only disappointment is Emily and Liam not ending up in a relationship. Maybe in the future.🙂 I recommend anyone wanting a good FBI mystery to read this series. You will not regret it.
Book 5 sees Emily being told that she has to be sidelined after they uncover that there is a lot more going on with the case involving Matt and the mysterious woman who killed him. However, Janice doesn’t want her completely out of the picture and decides to send her to a murder investigation in Chesapeake. Here they find that not only is there a murder, but that the two Police departments that are near the murder are both accusing the other of improper conduct. With Agent Coll, who has just graduated from the FBI academy with her, both to learn the ropes, but also acting as her bodyguard in case the mysterious woman makes a play for her, Slate tries to investigate this latest murder. As the two Special Agents begin their investigation, they initially think that it is possibly a domestic situation, until a second body is found, and then the case takes a whole new turn and things really begin to become complicated. As Slate and Coll are trying to uncover who is killing people, they have to tread carefully around a very bombastic and aggressive Chief on one side of the border, and on the other side, is a Chief that can’t seem to work out if she is going to help or hinder them, with her mood changing quicker than the wind. The case becomes even more complicated for Emily, when she is contacted by someone working the case about Matt. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but she receives new information that sends her into a tail spin, and impacts her concentration on the case she is working on. It is only the presence of Agent Coll that keeps her going. This is a change to the other books, in that we don’t have Zara Foley in the mix as much, she is off on her, carrying out her own investigations. Whilst the previous books have all been from Emily’s point of view, in this book, we actually get to see some of the story from Zara’s point of view, which is really intriguing and makes for a different take on events. It also shows us a different aspect of the story, which is intriguing seeing how events are unfolding. The other really interesting part of this, is that we get to see the dynamic between Liam Coll and Emily, and it is interesting seeing the two of them back together since they have been apart since book 1. They had such great chemistry and such a great bond in book 1, it is interesting to see if that still holds several months later, and it does not take long for them to pick up their friendship again. The character work continues to be one of the highlights of this series. Emily’s character is again just extraordinary as we see her trying to cope with Matt’s case and his death, and the mystery woman, but now the return of Agent Coll, and a new case involving two very different and rather difficult Police Chiefs. On top of that, she doesn’t have Zara to rely on like she is used to, and we really see the impact this has on Emily in this book. Whilst she does have a good working relationship with Liam Coll, they don’t have the dynamic that she and Zara do. This is done so well with the character writing. Just as good is Liam Coll’s character, he comes across so well in the book. He was such a great character in the first book, and that continues in this book. Another great surprise in this book is that Zara Foley actually gets her own small segments in the book, and we get to see her operating without Emily and from her point-of-view. This gives us an insight into not only events that are occurring away from Emily, but also from Zara’s perspective which is really fascinating. Overall, this is such a great book, there are so many wonderful aspects to it. The main mystery is just great, as Slate tries to discover who is killing people in these small towns, as well as placating these very unusual Police Chiefs. On top of that, we have Zara chasing down Matt’s case, which is just fascinating from both the aspect of the case and Zara’s character. And then there are the actual characters. The books just keep getting more interesting as the series goes on. This is one series that is just not to be missed!!
Just once, I would like to read a story by this author that doesn't include a misogynistic character in an authoritative role. Seriously, it's getting old. Especially when once again its a small town sheriff, only this one goes above and beyond several times saying and doing things that could cost him said job. I get it, these things happen, but at this point I'm seriously starting to wonder if something happened to the author or their family that has put such a large chip on their shoulder.
I had a few issues with this one, which I will lay out for you hopefully without giving away too much. To begin with the absolute pissing contest between Sheriff Black and Sheriff Quaker was so over the top that it was laughable. Neither character was likeable, and while I'm sure that was done intentionally so that the reader would be suspicious of both of them, I found their over the top reactions (both to each other and to Agent Slate) to be more tiresome than anything else.
Another off point for me was the one chapter we got that was randomly dedicated to Agent Foley working a side investigation into the business partner of Agent Slate's deceased ex-husband. She manages to track down his location, knows how high-tech the equipment would have been needed in order to pull off the deception, and yet she doesn't think to request back up? You know, other agents who could have at least remained outside on the exit's in case their suspect took off? Had she done that, they might have gotten some answers instead of ending up with more questions.
Then there was the absolutely unnecessary blink and you'll miss it attempt at romance between Emily and Liam. I get it, they are attracted to each other. They have a chemistry, but the way that Emily just seemed to use him to relieve the stress and frustration of the day, just to shut things down at the end by saying she's not ready to potentially lose someone else she cares about just made the whole experience seem cheap. Emily has known from the start that she is not mentally or emotionally ready for a relationship, so they fact that she willingly used Liam made me see her in a whole different light.
And finally, there was the way that things were wrapped up without anything really being wrapped up. Yes, we got snippets of a conversation Emily overheard between two people (and how she expects any of that to hold up in court when one suspect was dead rendering the conversation a case of he said/she said I will never know) and later on she tells Liam what happened, but none of it made any kind of sense when you look at the scope of the murders. I can't even fathom why one suspect would even help the other knowing what they were (and the way they played off the supposed explanation was just so far fetched I think I might have sprained my eyes from rolling them as hard as I did).
However, once again this author ended the book on another cliffhanger as relates to the over-arching story of just who killed Agent Slate's husband and why. And because I have seen the potential this author has to write good stories, I will continue on with this series at least for a little while longer. On the plus side, the books are all short taking me roughly a day and a half to finish, so they have that going for them.
I have been tempted to stop reading this series several times but by the end of each book, my curiosity gets the better of me, and here I am reviewing book 5! Although the book gets tedious (if I read one more time Emily’s voice in her head saying she’s attracted to Liam but can’t act on it because of her husband’s murder, I’m going to scream!! Get over it sister and move on!!), I still enjoyed the storyline. But when she jumps Liam’s bones in the backseat of her car, then tells him (2 minutes after he comes out of a coma) “sorry pal, it’s not happening between us” (obviously breaking the poor guy’s heart), my opinion of Emily changed, and not for the better. The book got a bit sloppy at one point, which really irritated me (who edited this book?). At a club, she sees “2 men and 1 woman” at a table. Within the same paragraph, it changes to 1 man and 2 women”! Huh? Several pages later she notes every table has “2 men and 1 woman”. Ok, which is it? Same chapter, before going into the club, she says “I’ll need to contact counterterrorism…”. Several pages later “I’ll need to contact counterterrorism…”. Um, yeah, got that already Emily. Not that these issues impact the storyline, but it’s irritating as it’s sloppy work. Still, I’m moving on to book 6 because I do enjoy the author’s writing style and the mysteries he writes. Plus, again, my curiosity has gotten the better of me.
Emily is sent with Liam to a small town. She winds up in fight between two sheriffs that ends in bloodshed
Emily and Liam are sent on a trip to a small town to investigate a murder. Liam is sent along as her babysitter because the assassin is still on her trail. They wind up in the middle of a fued between sheriffs in bordering counties. One is a women hating bigot and the other is a slightly off center woman that runs hot and cold in the same conversation. The common denominator is the bigots son. The lady sheriff is doing her best to put the son in the middle of the murder. But Emily and Liam are beginning to see holes in the charges. Just because they don’t like the kid doesn’t mean he is guilty. To find what is going on they dig into some nasty background and then Liam gets shot.
Alex Sigmore delivers yet again!! This 5th installment finds Emily teamed up once more with Liam Coll, newly minted as an FBI agent. Their obvious attraction to one another hasn’t waned, and it added a tiny but delicious bit of friction to their professional relationship.
I did have the culprit in Emily’s double-murder case pegged fairly early on in this book, yet that did nothing to detract from my enjoyment of the story. Alex Sigmore still threw plenty of curveballs at me as the reveal unfolded which led to quite a few surprises.
I’m thoroughly invested in Emily’s journey and the friendships (family?) she’s building with Zara and Liam. Even her boss at the FBI, Janice, has started to grow on me. I can’t wait to start the next book in the series.
I'll has finished his training and is now a junior agent assigned to Emily to learn and to watch her back. They end up in a rural area on the Maryland and Delaware state line investigating a double murder and a feud between the two officials on either side of the line. They solve the case but Coll is shot and Emily is sidelined because of the threat against her. Great storyline. Love this author.
Excellent series! Each book could be read alone but for the best reading experience I suggest reading the series in order. Interesting characters whose stories grow with the series. Each book has so many unexpected twists and turns that I can hardly wait to get back to see what's going to happen next! I was hooked after Book 1 but now I'm REALLY hooked! I think Book 5 is the best so far. Free on Kindle Unlimited!
