The Gifts #3

Das Haus der Magie

Rate this book

OH MY GOOOOOOD how does every book in this series get better than the last? This was such a perfect ending to such a great trilogy. The magic, the relationships, the writing?? I loved every part of this. And I won’t stop talking about how much I loved these characters— each and every one of them felt so real, with all their flaws and their funny little quips. I’m so sad I won’t get to see them in any more books. I guess all I can do now is just … keep rereading them?

Loved the ending to this trilogy. Throughout the book, scenes and events would occur that kept making me want to read more. The conclusion of the book was just what I needed for closure. I did feel like there was something missing that I just couldn’t put my finger on.

"I am so lonely, in the end, that I would rather try to talk to a ghost than talk to no one at all."

oh. my. god. I feel like I've just been punched and then run over by a truck
I'm not ready to say goodbye to any of these characters! I want so badly to write a full review for this book because it deserves it, but I still haven't recovered from that ending.
I would die for Maeve and Roe, I'm not even kidding you. All of these characters felt like real people, and I'm so mad at myself for finishing this series so fast.
I'm not very familiar with tarot or witchcraft or anything, but I loved how it all tied into this series! Probably going to do more research on that 😅
My only complaint is that this series felt too short. And no, I'm not just saying that because I love it so much. There were so many things left up to reader interpretation at the end of this book that I felt could've easily carried over to into another installment in the series.

All in all, every book in this series has been five stars! I can't believe I didn't pick up this trilogy sooner, but I'm so glad I finally did <3

Once again, an incredible read. To anyone looking at this series:

"Ladies: meet the Housekeeper card
Now, she can be your downfall
Or she can be your start
And she only wants the best for you"

This book WILL be your emotional downfall. So many twists and turns of the heart. But it will also be a start. A start in a love for Wicca maybe, a start in a new understanding of grooming and cult behavior, a start in an understanding of yourself! Now it's not a self-help book of course, but there are so many relatable characters and experiences that finding yourself in this story will be easy!

SPOILERS BELOW

The redemption of Aaron was handled so beautifully. I'm usually someone who is repulsed by love triangles. The dynamic between Maeve, Roe, and Aaron was such a relief and change of pace. We can be intrinsically connected to someone in a way that is not romantic but may not match the familial/platonic connection. Maeve and Aaron share a bond of kindred spirits and it was great seeing that played out.

The dedication to "all the unlikeable main characters" was a cute nod, but the one thing I'll have to disagree with. Maeve is so very likeable. There are many unlikeable characters in books (I'm looking at you, Holden Caufield), but Maeve isn't one of them. Her flaws, her bitchiness, her internal dialogue and fear of her own cruelty is not only relatable, but intrinsic in being a teenage girl. What makes her truly likeable and lovable is her constant desire to act AGAINST those thoughts. Her immediate regrets of speaking without thinking, and her standing her ground when she knows she's right. Being an outspoken girl is not a sentence to being unlikeable and Maeve feels like a love letter to all girls who are demonized for not being "perfect". I support women's rights....AND women's wrongs!!

The easy diversity of this book and incorporation of the cruelty, bigotry, self-idolatry, corruption, and manipulation that has run rampant in the past and is running rampant in the present is just a breath of fresh air. A consistent theme through this series is past, present, future. The core four sharing the "curse" or more accurately, accepting the responsibility that comes with their gifts at the end to protect the vulnerable. Them all sacrificing their own individual future in some way. They share a past, choose to share their present, and sacrifice their future together, simply to ensure a better future for everyone was beautiful.

A beautiful end to a beautiful, well-written story. My only complaint is that I can no longer have more!

This was an incredible book to finish the series on, tying the story back to the first, after the second was a little messy. This took the more feminist angle we saw in the first book, and saw the four friends ultimately make the decision between their friendship, and their divided futures. I would have liked a months-later chapter, but this was still a phenomenal series.

what words do you have for one of your favorite series coming to a beautiful end? every gift a curse marks the end of caroline o’donoghue’s incredible all our hidden gifts trilogy: a deeply irish story of magic, friendship, religion, and justice, bound together by the tarot and story of life written across its cards. these characters feel like friends now, and leaving them behind is bittersweet. i can only hope that we might return to them one day, if only for a moment, just to see how they’re getting on.

these books are going to mean so much to so many readers. whether you’re finding it difficult being a teenager, trying to recover from your religious trauma, figuring out your gender identity, or feeling othered and out of place even amongst those you love, there is something for you here. beneath the glamor of this series is a story of friendship, love, and perseverance in the face of injustice, and it’s not one you want to miss.

o’donoghue has written a series just as striking as its covers and i truly hope this series is loved and cherished the way it deserves to be. every gift a curse is out now in the uk and out in the us in may.

Before reading All Our Hidden Gifts, I did not like reading books that were part of a series. Stand-alone books were my jam, short, sweet, and to the point. I just never found a story that I felt so invested in that I needed 3 or 4 more books. Fast forward to finding this series, and I KNEW I needed more. I devoured the first book and immediately went looking to buy the others. Truly, this series sparked something in my brain that made me LOVE reading and left me with the desire to find others like it.

This book was the perfect ending to the series. The vibes were immaculate ✨️.

The best part was witnessing the growth of every single character. Roe found courage to be their truest self, use their music to share it with the world, and help empower others like them. Lily fully stepped into and embraced her weird, she is flowing and thriving... and is still very much the river. Fiona finally followed through on matters that were important to her dreams and her heart 😉. Aaron battled with his darkest inner thoughts, trauma, and found family and belonging with those he least expected.
Meave finally gets out of her own way, learns to trust her intuition, finds her purpose "her thing," and makes peace with herself and The Housekeeper. Honorable mentions to Naula and Manon, who were constantly putting their lives at risk and cleaning up the messes (there were many) that the rest of them left behind all while trying to repair their own relationship. To Paolo and Tutes for their love, loyalty, and bravery, the sweetest babes 💗.

Every Gift a Curse was, in all honesty, a slightly disappointing end to a series I had been thoroughly enjoying up until now. I still liked the book, so I wouldn’t call it a complete letdown, but I didn’t enjoy it nearly so much. All in all, it felt a little samey, like the story told over the trilogy might have fit just as well into only two books.

The story pretty much follows on from the end of the previous book, with helpful reminders of just what happened then, as it’s been a year or so since that was published and I’d forgotten just about everything that happened in it. Maeve is cursed, or so they think, and everyone is in somewhat of a bind over how to resolve it.

I think I had a similar feeling about the pacing of the second book, at the start at least. That book was elevated, for me, by the start of Aaron’s redemption arc and the same was pretty much the case here, as it continued (although less prevalent). In terms of the plot, it all starts to feel very much the same as the previous book. It felt like there wasn’t anything that differentiated this book from its predecessor. As such, I found I was a little bored by it at points.

That’s not to say there weren’t good aspects. I liked the writing just as much as before, and the characters leapt off the page too. They were compelling enough on their own that, even though I was bored by the plot, reading about them was hardly a trial. I also liked how Aaron’s redemption arc played out, particularly how, despite it, Ro still didnt forgive him and wasn’t pressured into doing so. Since, of all the characters, Ro is probably the one who Aaron hurt the most, I thought this was a nice way to go about things. It recognised both that Aaron still had work to do and that Ro wasn’t obliged to forgive or forget what he had done before (and it would be their choice if ever they wanted to).

So, really, the only issue that I had was the way it felt as though it had all happened before, albeit maybe on a smaller scale (as if now they were fighting the boss, where before they weren’t). With a bit of shuffling events around, you might have fit the events of the final two books into one, slightly longer, one. In the end, then, it was a solid, if slightly disappointing finale to a good series.

This was a… surprise, to say the least. After hyping the shit out of the first two books and loving everything about them, this one felt like a punch to the gut.

For me, the main issue with this book are the themes the author chose to focus on. At the end of the second book, a lot of emphasis is put on Dorey, her cult and the fact that she‘s a powerful villain that the characters have to somehow defeat in the last book. There is this huge buildup to a grand finale, and I still cannot believe that this storyline doesn’t even make up 20% of the book (and I‘m still being generous because it’s likely even less).
Instead, a lot of completely random, unfitting/uncharacteristic and plain confusing storylines are introduced, some of which I‘m still trying to wrap my head around. Since this is the finale to the trilogy, I‘m not going to go into detail to avoid spoiling those who haven’t read the book yet. Even the final battle between the group and Dorey felt so rushed and anticlimactic that it left me feeling frustrated and a little upset.

This book felt like an energy vampire to me: there was lots of negativity, lots of complaining and no real intention of changing things for the better. I‘m still shocked at how things turned out to be with this one, especially because the first two were 5 star reads for me.

Action and magic-packed adventures, here we are!

Perfect timing, at the End of September, for reading this book!

I love how I feel like I grew with the characters, I watched them become more powerful, more connected, more united with each book.

I’m kind of sad that the series is over… but it ends of such an high note, I cannot help but imagine what could happen next.

Many thanks to Walker Books US for the complimentary advanced copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Люблю цю серію ✨ Вона для мене якась неймовірно атмосферна. Дружба, магія, закоханість, усвідомлення свого гендеру й талантів, порятунок світу - усього достатньо.

What an ending to this lovely series! “To the unlikable main characters” is such a great dedication to the final part of the trilogy. I absolutely love books about friends like these, friends who mess up, grow, laugh, learn, and love each other dearly. 🥰💔💖❤️⭐️🥲 all while on the backdrop of vvvv cool magic and story!

The first book was so good, and it was all I needed making a trilogy out of the same thing without anything really starting or getting better is just making the whole book boring. And the characters get so unlikeable after the second book, they're just annoying

A great ending to a great series, magic, tarot, friendship, relationships. What more could you want in a story? A solid well told story that has moments of relatability, insane courage and classic witch craft. Reminds me of a more lighthearted version of “the craft” vibe. Sometimes a little scary and a bit eerie but over all a feel good series where the good guys win in the end.

I really enjoyed this finale, it was realistic (as far as teen relationship dynamics go), and resolved the storylines for all of the characters very cleanly. Overall this series was a really fun time for me. I love witchy books and this one was cute, fast paced, and an overall fun read. It’s nothing groundbreaking but as far as YA goes I don’t think I could ask for anything more. If anyone's looking for a quick series and likes tarot, magic, and LGBTA/POC inclusion this is a really great series.

Now onto the fun part, I’m rather concerned for myself being that I found Maeve really relatable and in the moments where she’s being depicted as the bad guy I’m fully on her side. *SPOILER* when her mom slapped her in the face and her response was to hug her?! Or when she stood up for her friends because people were being horrible to them and her friends acted like she was the villain I really had to evaluate myself because I fully felt Maeve was just in her actions. I don’t know if that’s the protective, impulsive, avenging nature in myself or if the book wasn’t fully successful in depicting Maeve as the bad guy (or maybe a combination of both). I adored Maeve and feel very connected to her upon leaving these books.

Overall I’m incredibly pleased to have stumbled upon the first book 5 months ago as I haven’t read a YA series as fun as this in quite a while.

feministic, queer, witchy & fun to read.
This whole series was everything I could look for in a good book series :) It really became one of my safe places 💛

I have to say that in this book were some small things that I didn’t like but they’re not worth getting mentioned.

All in all I can recommend these books so so much.
I’ll miss the characters dearly.

ALSO I LOVED THE FOUND FAMILY TROPE

4.5 stars rounded up. The first book in this series is still my favorite, but this one definitely comes second. I didn’t want it to end!! I have so many questions about where Maeve and Lily and Roe and Aaron will find themselves in ten, fifteen years. And as much as I love Roe, I kind of wanted Aaron and Maeve to get together.

There were parts of the final climatic scene which felt a bit rushed and unrealistic, like their powers being able to do things they’d never done before, but overall I loved that the four friends were able to share the Housekeeper through the magic of ✨tattoos✨

I haven’t felt this way about a YA series in so long, these books gave me the kind of joy and wonderment I felt as a book-obsessed kid.

If you’re into teens getting magic powers, Ireland, religious cults, and/or tarot cards, I highly recommend this series

This book was so fierce! I actually read that so quick it’s crazy…

But seriously I’m obsessed with the fact that you’re not supposed to love main character yet you still resonate with her. The supporting characters are also great and the twists and turns had me GAGGED!! Like seriously if you love tarot and witch stuff this series is def worth the read! Also shout out to my Irish sisters I loved hearing about the motherland and the spin on religion the story took.

10/10!!!

Honestly might be the best ending to a series I have read so far, then again I haven’t finished many. I absolutely loved the character development between the characters. And I would definitely recommend this series to anyone else who is a lover of paranormal fiction, lgbtq+ representation and honestly just so much more. I will happily put this on my read shelf.
