This is a System Apocalypse* story with an incentive to kill people for the gains it brings you. We open with a warband that coalesced from a maximum security prison with the key personnel being those on death row. That makes this a dark setup that permeates the story.

The author is good enough to keep it compelling. The pace is strong and descriptions vivid and engaging. Bain, as the protagonist, is desperately clinging to his humanity despite being adjacent (and hence morally culpable) to some terrible things along the way. This is made harder by having a class that isn't combat oriented, but useful to those who are. So he has to prove more useful than he'd be if killed for his cosmic essence (or whatever it's called in the story).

The author pulls a couple of plot developments out of the air that I'm not sure work very well. Like, Bain ends up in a team with some of the aliens who have been melded onto the Earth and they form an alliance that exhibits way more trust than can actually be justified. It works, but only because the author has his thumb on the scale.

And I don't get some of Bain's motivation, in particular with regards to an encounter with the system boogey man. He blows up in an antagonistic way to someone way, waaaay more powerful than him for no real reason and it's only author caveat that he isn't smeared across the countryside.

Anyway, the setup is dark enough, and some of the characters are enough on the edge of psychopathic, that I find myself flinching before picking it up to continue the story. I'm about halfway in and I'm going to abandon it here. I'm going to give it three stars despite this because there are some real strengths to the storytelling that make me sad to leave it. I'm definitely interested in other works by the author, assuming I can find something a bit less on the edge the precipice this one is.

* System Apocalypse, as I understand it, is a story where some kind of RPG-like "system" hits the world causing it to fundamentally change in ways that are destructive to the populace. Generally, that means levels, classes, or, more rarely, "cultivation" (for an oriental flavor?). Often, this change means gaining "experience" that improve your capabilities by killing things. The darker ones, like this story, include gaining experience by killing your fellow humans.

This story lacks any sense of joy or wonder throughout the first 50%, and the last 50% is completely predictable and uninspiring. Our main character is supposed to be the one bright spot, but honestly, we spend so much time in his head without learning anything about him other than some surface level stuff that I skipped a lot of that text. The system is poorly formulated and the author has set it up so that it can be manipulated in whatever way the plot demands. Combat is basic. Plotting is sort of weird, the author builds up these big mysteries and the MC is basically like "I always knew that was going to happen, because apparently I'm a plot genius."

Made it through the end, but I doubt I'll read the next one.

Book one

Well, I found the book to be very interesting but I did have some issues with it as well.
I didn’t really have a problem with three of the characters being from death row, however saying that one of them is still a good person after in someway helping his brother skin children alive yeah that’s not a good person.
And while I do believe humanity, as a whole is capable of incredible evil I found it hard to believe that humanity would tear itself apart, slaughtering, women and children, and anybody that didn’t have a combat class. Sure, some would do that but an entire planet were the people did this, I don’t think so.

And 83% of the way through the book we start getting time jumps which I absolutely hate. Now everybody’s pulling spells out of their butts. The little puppies full grown and has spells of its own. We don’t know where they came from. It’s bull crap.

For these reasons I can’t rate this book any higher than two out of 10.

4.5 stars. A good example of the genre, albeit pretty dark. I wish I thought the author was wrong about who would survive a system where you level up best from killing people, but I know too much history to find the result here improbable.

Not all is lost, but it'll be interesting to see if the MC manages to create a functional society as things circle the drain ever faster

2.5 Stars?
For Reference: I usually only give 1 star to books which are so bad that I can't make myself finish them. If I finish a book, it gets at least two stars. If I want to read the next one, it gets at least 3 stars.

I have a few issues with this book. I might read the next one. But, if I do, it will be after reading several others and giving myself time to forget how mediocre this one was. This is another one of those authors that cranks out several books per year, and more or less they all boil down to the same story. It isn't so bad when you are looking for that type of story, but they can usually do with more time being 'baked' for lack of a better term.

Throughout the whole book, you are told that the main character was on Death row for... something. It is hinted at, but I never actually figured out what it was. It is implied that he was forced into doing something for someone he owed a debt to. Perhaps I missed a detail somewhere, but we are basically told that he is on Death Row when the world ends, and he is only alive at the beginning of the story because he tied himself to the scariest guy he could find. I guess this is supposed to give the MC a reason to still be alive in a world where everyone without an obviously powerful combat class has already been murdered, while still allowing him to be a 'good guy.' All, so that he can become the overpowered MC with a unique class that nobody saw coming.

We hear about scary things his benefactor has done, but throughout the story he never really comes off as scary to me. More like an honorable mercenary than some kind of Hannibal Lecter serial killer that they make him out to be.

Midway through the book, the other characters all decide that the MC is their leader even though he considers himself to be more of a hanger-on. And go about letting him know this in the most ham-fisted, forced, series of declarations from each of the team members about how great the MC is. It was like the author decided to become a school teacher and make all of the other students in class stand up and tell the MC what they like about him.

At one point in the story, the MC has a full-blown toddler-like temper tantrum. It made zero sense for the plot of the story. Without spoilers, I'll just say it was another encounter which felt forced and artificial, just to give the author an excuse to make the story go in the direction they wanted it to.

As a LitRPG/Gamelit book: The character has stats. But, so what? They don't seem to actually mean anything. His are lower than most others in the group, but he ends up being the star of the show so often because of his 'broken' ability. Why bother keeping track of stats if you don't use them for anything? At the end of the book, I could tell you the MC's level, but none of his other stats. The rest of his abilities boil down to "I have the ability that I need whenever I decide I need it, because I can make them up on the spot." Yawn...

I usually dislike time-skips, but this book has a couple and I agree with them, because he basically just skips the grinding to the desired level so that the story can move on to the next part without forcing us to read every single repetitive fight.

3.5/5

The characters drove this one down for me. Some are so insane it’s like their bloodlust and desire to just murder everything around them is so bad it completely overrides any sense of personal self preservation which feels… insane. Then others are like oh cute puppy! Uwu! When they were fighting a battle to the death 10 minutes earlier. It just gave me tonal whiplash. I wasn’t buying the emotion in any of the scenes the author was trying to sell.

Dungeons were cool. Apoc was neat enough. The action was great! Class was cool. System was kind of Bla W/E. I was a bit lost on how it made sense that the leveling was so stunted practically no one made it past level 1 in the prelude. The insane levels of bloodthirsty backstabbing the author describes should have been birthed by some incredible incentive but they’d barely scratched the surface of what was possible in the system yet so the motivation versus actions of the whole planet didn’t quite line up. That’s mostly all prelude stuff that happens before the novel starts (conveniently) so it didn’t impact the actual read all too much.

Overall a mixed bag, with parts that stand out and parts that didn’t work for me. I DNF around 70-75% because I just didn’t care about any of the characters by that point, and I didn’t like the party dynamic that had formed either.

very interesting story. Not too sure on the MC.

First of all, let me say, I thought the story was interesting. A post to pop Kaleptik planet known as earth. The only problem I have is with the reprehensible characters. The main character and his cronies are not the most likable people. I am assuming that this is. A story of redemption as well as a lit RPG story in my opinion the most redeeming and pleasant character in the book is the paladin. The other issue I have is the vocabulary such as parameters instead of skills a unique word choice. I like the story and we’ll see where it goes, I wish I could like the MC.

Alot better then i thought it would be

Lol seriously some of these synopsis write ups need help. I'm glad I decided to give this book a shot. The MC at first seemed kind of like a jerk but the story moved along quickly enough that it not only made it understandable but also made the reader sympathetic to him. Fortunately also it didn't take long for his attitude to start easing up which made it easier to invest in him. The support characters are well developed and at this point add significantly to the story. I really can't wait for book two. I hope if you read this and give the book a try you enjoy it as much as I did.

I love the Crucible system

So I’ve got to wonder, is Max the Cataclysm Knight? The name alone seems awfully similar to Apocalypse Knight, and the description of his capabilities could fit…

I love that Bain isn’t a new adult OP powerhouse. He is frightfully intelligent, and his abilities are fascinating, and have the potential to become OP. How interesting is it that even his CUI was changed to be in his eyes? And how is it that the Cosmic Lens is only used by Unraveler Agents? I can’t wait to see how Bain progresses, and (hopefully) how this story ties into that of the Apocalypse Knights.

Great plot but hard to keep reading.

I really have enjoyed the book, but ... this is definately a book I had to set aside and come back later. Character development is great, and nobody has become so over powered that they dominate the story. For every strength there is a weakness that just happens to be found.

Originality is also something specific to this book. I have never come across a storyline remotely close.

In the future I do hope to find out how the main character was placed in the position he was at the start of the book. To much has been left out for there to not be a compelling story in itself.

Uninteresting and frustrating

Why do so many inexperienced authors feel the need to make everything so overly antagonistic to the point where it's hard to take anything seriously. This book was honestly, one of the worst I've read in a long time. If I have to read the words "eye boy" again, I might vomit.

Barely any plot movement happens in 500+ pages. There's some tiny bits of what might be world building. Overall, this is a huge no. Don't waste your time on this one. There's a reason you've never heard of it and it only showed up in your amazon search with a "sponsored" tag

Great read!

I seldom give 5star reviews, but this book was fantastic! It has an incredible start, slows down a bit in the middle, then picks up to a very satisfying ending. The middle part was used mostly for character development, explanations of the magic system and character growth. If you want more than just filler or fluff, this is RPGLit at its near best. Highly recommended, although there are a couple of very minor editing and proofreading errors. I forgive the author for this if he or she keeps writing at this level.

Very Surprised. I mostly dislike DB King

I saw DB King and passed over this book multiple times. It took a nudge to try it but I did and wow.
Characters aren't all the fleshed out IMHO but the stage was set. MC is powerful but because of hard work. Became a veterinarian but went to prison for what is inferred to be a favor owed to his foster family (Triad ties). A very dark-realistic apocalypse story where the strong killed the weak until there were no non-combat classes left among humanity. I'd recommend it if you like dark. Looking forward to book 2.

DNF at 5%

The story starts very awkwardly. Some unintroduced guys climb a mountain one year after the apocalypse and talk about dull stuff. I stopped reading when they stated that after the system introduction billions of humans killed each other for some kill energy, not even sparing their own families.. i found this idea too depressing, the introduction of characters lacking and the establishment of the main plot both contra productive and lazy, as i had no reason to care about anything this way..

Good Solid Read

Overall this novel starts a little chaotically but finds a rhythm that works for it. The characters a good if a little underdeveloped in pursuit of a faster pace. In the next novel I would assume there would be less haste pushing our cohort to continually take action, leaving more time for character backstory or development.

I would say it’s a great start to a fun adventure that promises grand aspirations. 9/10

A surprisingly good spin on the system apocalypse

I’m not going to lie, I skipped this for quite a while because the cover and blurb didn’t appeal to me. It was surprisingly solid, with an interesting cast of characters and a spin on the system apocalypse genre that I hadn’t seen before. Once you get into it the MCs power set becomes quite a bit cooler than it sounds, and pretty OP as well. Well worth the read, and I’ll be moving on to book 2.

Interesting but has so much lacking

Ok lets start with Bain (a french word for bath, would have been better to call him Bane )
Its sloppy and I really don't care for the style. It has that typical litrpg problem, rush rush rush quantity over quality. The overall story just gets messy as it goes on and doesn't give time to really develop. It just seems as the story progresses its just falling a part at the seams.

This book is so good. Starts of grim, dark, and hopeless. Then humans do what they do best: survive. They forge allies. Combine knowledge. Grow stronger while forging bonds.
It’s really cool Bain can see the molecular level of cosmic energy and manipulate it. His potential for growth and learning is limited only by the amount of energy he can store and examples of its usage in the world. Can’t wait to see how he breaks the Crucible system next

KU Review

Dark and bleak system apocalypse story full of anti-heroes. Well crafted world and characters and who doesn’t love a story about a boy and his dog.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Fast Paced and Fun

The pacing is excellent, the story is gripping, and the writing is solid. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will purchase the next eagerly. The biggest flaw, at least from my perspective, is the side characters are formulaic and shallow and because they are so shallow the dialogue gets stale quickly.

Good Read…

Overall it was a good read.

I felt the author had some odd over use of “its”. There were times it was being used so often that it made the reading awkward enough to pull me from the zone. It wasn’t bad enough to reduce the rating but more something you notice that’s just kinda weird and goes against most proper grammatical practices

A bit of a surprise.

I do not like DB King books. They are great on ideas, but fail to deliver. Adding in another author made me take a chance. The ideas are still great. The characters are okay but could be better. The direction is missing, this meanders about with a vague idea of overall storyline. So a fun read, but the next one well be telling.

Look, nobody talks like this man. None of these interactions are realistic toward the end of the book. Monologues instead of dialogues. Characters in leadership positions suddenly making unrealistic decisions. Multiple faction leaders deciding special boy main character they just met 3 days ago should just be in charge of everything. Super not believable.

The author started off good with the dark fantasy elements but the companions and people the MC meets are just nonsense people. The world building is enough to keep me around but all of the characters are super annoying. No likable characters.

All very polarized, all-or-nothing people who also change their mind at the toss of a hat. The whole thing just feels stilted and amateurish.

Outstanding start.

I don't write many reviews, but this was so good I felt I had to. Complex, adult MC (not a teenager or college age), and an unfortunately (and realistic) guess at what our worlds response would be.

A fairly decent entry into the LitRPG genre. I liked it. I'd read more in the series if I run across them. I do like the whole I won't be controlled by the system vibe happening by the end of the book, so that should make future books interesting.

Great read

The book is impressive with its writing and story. Constructive criticism:
I feel the supporting characters may be treating the Mc a bit to reverently. I also hope the author brings in characters that are former gamers.

Bioware-like

4.5 The closest I've seen a litrpg come to feeling like a Bioware (Mass Effect, DA: Inquisition) game. The leveling and build craft isn't as crunchy as I love but it has solid characters and story overall.

Pretty good start to a new series

This series did not really resonate with me like some others and I almost quit early on. But in the end I finished, and enjoyed the later half of the series...

A nice, fresh take on a system/apocalyptic world with a good boi to boot!

While the leveling and classes aren’t anything new, the creative ways that the MC uses ocular powers to transcend his class limits is awesome! Definitely worth the read.

Very good book

This is a fine litrpg fantasy apocalyptic adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like Mary, the psychotic assassin. I anxiously await the sequel.
