Napoleon Hill

Oliver Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author and conman. He is best known for his book Think and Grow Rich (1937), which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time. Hill's works insisted that fervid expectations are essential to improving one's life. Most of his books were promoted as expounding principles to achieve "success".
Hill is a controversial figure. Accused of fraud, modern historians also doubt many of his claims, such as that he met Andrew Carnegie and that he was an attorney.

I think a lot of the advice here is outdated. Enthusiasm as a substitute for proper rest and sleep? No thanks.

Whenever I go into a success guide/ self help book I keep in mind that a lot of what I’m about to read can be “common sense” or known advice. That being said, I love when guides can put things into new perspectives. Not being familiar with the rest of Napoleon’s works, this was the perfect introduction to what I should expect reading more of his collection.

For me, I find a guide book to be well written when I catch myself highlighting a lot of what I read or bookmarking whole chapters. That’s what I did with this book. It’s a book you’ll find yourself reaching for to remind yourself of what you are aiming for.

That they were timed pieces is noted in a few chapters more than others. In some chapters, the advice was very male oriented. While it applied to men and women, mentions of women and their success was never mentioned. Again, understandable given the time in which these pieces were written. It was my own personal feelings of exclusion that took away from what was written.

My favorite thing taken away from this read was how Napoleon’s words reflected a lot of my own beliefs for success. I found missing keys and new perspectives on how to move forward with my own progress and achievements. That is important for me.

Huge thank you to St. Martin’s Publishing for the ARC via NetGalley.

⚜️My Summary
I love reads by Napoleon Hill, so I was happy when I saw this ARC became available. What i enjoyed the most about this book was the pull of encouragement for success. I loved how indept he went into overcoming adversities and letting ambition be your guide. I especially loved how he suggests that you learn from others, because although you may not want to do things the way they did at least you learned what not to do. A great read! I highly recommend!

Not the biggest fan of compilations of small bits from other publications, but sometimes its nice to get the gist of the other books without having to stop and read them all. I still plan on reading Think and Grow Rich at some point, but it just hasn't been the right time recently.
I find it hilarious that other reviewers have said things like this book being out of date or 0% relevant today. It's like people don't know how to take advice and tweek it for themselves and their own experience any more. Add some inflation and a couple different technology industries and you've got perfectly relevant advice. There is even a prologue that address some of the out of date pricing and comments (one reviewer said he was sexist...it was a different time, we can put away our offended spirits to learn from past generations still, can't we?!). The prologue said that they considered taking them out but felt that leaving them in without edit would keep the message. Because surely we can still take advice from older generations who have learned things. Surely. If you can't, then this book isn't for you.
But for those of us who can, this has great insight. I'm not complaining about how he doesn't address my Christian faith when he wasn't a Christian....nor should we expect him to talk or act like we do today when he isn't alive or writing this today. But we can still learn from him.
Great success principles and nuggets of wisdom.

All in all, though, I'd rather have a complete book than a compliation.

Dream Big: Overcoming Fear and Achieving Success by Napoleon Hill is a compilation of speeches and articles that inspire and encourage success. Napoleon Hill is a renowned inspirational thinker and writer. He wrote many books to help people conquer their fears and, as a result, help to achieve their dreams and goals.

The pocket size book contains advice that is helpful to readers who need inspiration or guidance about life in general. Some of the advice was outdated but it can still be applied to modern times. The book was organized by short chapters dedicated to specific topics. It is a collection of pieces that were previously written by the author in the 1930s and does not include any new articles.

I found the book to be inspirational and informative. I like the chapters were short enough to be educational but also allowed the reader to continue reading the book or to take a few minutes to process what was learned. I found most of the advice to be helpful and encouraging. There were some bits that were from another era or not applicable to modern times, such as working hard and longer than you should be, working to the point of exhaustion, and giving up sleep to work. Overall, I was able to gleam a few helpful tidbits. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels stuck or needs an extra boost in life.

Napoleon Hill certainly was a man with a lot of advice but how does it stack up to the reality adults face in 2022? That is where I become lukewarm.

Laid out in an easy to consume manner, the novella pulls from multiple sources of Hill’s writing. What I did like was the in-depth look into the unconscious ways humans self sabotage. Knowing what to look for in our own thoughts and feelings is valuable.

I paused when I got to the section on Requisite. Hill essentially says if you do more than you’re paid for, you’ll stand out as hardworking and success will come. That just isn’t realistic in today’s world. Those who do more get tasked with more for the same wages as if they did the bare minimum. This is one example of information I believe is outdated and not just outdated, but used to gaslight an entire generation into giving up their work-life balance.

Thank you St. Martin’s Essentials for a gifted copy to read and review.

Napoleon Hill remains relevant to this day. This book has quite a few gems inside it, as one would expect, however... There is nothing really new for those who have read Think and Grow Rich and/or The Law of Success.

I appreciate the Napoleon Hill Foundation for keeping Hill's work in print, and exposing new generations to it, but these "new" Hill books are, at best, CliffsNotes versions of Hill's real books. Perhaps necessary given younger folks' decreased attention spans, but they do themselves a disservice by not reading Hill's two main books.

Nothing wrong with this book, it still gets 4 stars, but really, go read The Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich. You'll get everything in this book and so much more.

Good Advice in a Short Book

Napoleon Hill is best know for his book Think and Grow Rich. This book is a collection of short essays written in the 1930s. Although some of the material is dated, it is still easy to read and offers good advice.

I think the best essays in this collection give advice on finding a fulfilling career. However, the one that I found most relevant dealt with adversity. Most of us of had plenty of adversity in the last few years. His essay helps to put things in perspective and gain some insight into the benefits of adversity.

This is a short book. I takes very little time to read, but the ideas will stick with you, and you can come back to it when times are difficult.

I received this book from St. Martin’s Press for this review.

A bit of research showed me that Napoleon Hill wrote many books of which his best known apparently is Think and Grow Rich. Amazing to me is that the book was first published in 1937. This is the first of this author’s works that I have read.

Here in a short, just over 100 page book, Hill takes on big topics as can be seen from the book’s subtitle. As the introduction notes, there are aspects of the essays that will perhaps feel dated but readers may still haves some good takeaways. Dip in and hopefully take away some bits of wisdom and something to contemplate after completing each entry.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this title. All opinions are my own.

(Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, St. Martin's Essentials for providing this eARC for an honest review.)

Our thoughts are extremely powerful! Great motivational and inspirational advice!

Although his advice was published between 1915 and 1937, it still applies today. Hill mentions multiple people, such as Edison, Ford, Woolworth, Washington among others, and discusses how they have been successful.

It may be a short read, but it made a huge impact!

A mix of Mr Hill's past advice, sorted out into easy to read chapters. Some old information (obviously), but something for everyone looking for his insights. Suggest reading one chapter at a time vs all at one sitting. Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers & Mr Hill for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

I loved this little book!!! Even though it was written decades ago, the wisdom and common sense information that is passed on was refreshing in this day and age when everything is so complicated. I couldn't put it down. It should be a part of teaching in schools and a staple in every home. If everyone practiced what is written in this book, we would be a better society as a whole.

Review:

This book is to help encourage people to achieve their goals and go after their dreams. It's a very short read. There's about ten chapters. I definitely recommend this book for anybody who feels lost and doesn't know where they are going. Especially if they have an idea in mind, but don't have the confidence that they can see it through. It definitely gives the reader plenty to think about.

Short and to the point! I discovered Napoleon Hill not too long ago and couldn’t believe that he was born in the 1800s. These ideas are still relevant to this day. Highly recommend this short motivational style book!

All of this advice was originally published prior to 1937, some as far back as 1915. This was not advice that needed to be repackaged and republished in 2022, as approximately 0% of it is still relevant today 😅

Thank you Goodreads for the ARC (yes I know I’m behind lol)

This book had some pretty controversial things in it. I’m not sure why I continued to read it to be honest. A bit repetitive as well. I guess if you overlook those it’s decent?? I guess.

Dream Big by Napoleon Hill draws on his extensive experience studying successful individuals and distills their insights into a practical guide for achieving success. The book is structured around a series of principles (essays format) that Hill argues are critical for success, such as having a definite purpose, developing a positive mental attitude, and taking decisive action.

One of the strengths of the book is Hill's engaging writing style, which is both motivational and actionable. He offers a wealth of practical advice and exercises that readers can use to apply the principles to their own lives. Additionally, the book is peppered with inspiring stories of individuals who have overcome obstacles and achieved great success, which serves to reinforce Hill's message.

However, some readers may find the book's focus on individual success somewhat narrow, and its emphasis on material wealth and achievement may not resonate with everyone. Additionally, some of the principles may feel overly simplistic or idealistic, and not always applicable to real-world situations.

Overall, Dream Big is an inspiring guide for those looking to achieve their goals. While some readers may find the book's message overly focused on material success, the principles and exercises offered by Hill are practical and actionable, and can help readers to develop the mindset and habits necessary for success.

I didn’t know this was a compilation of essays from and influential speaker from the 1930s. With that being said some of the comments are sexist and out of date for current times, but this makes sense as it was originally published in 1937. I’ve found some valuable and relatable quotes thus far, but overall it’s not what I’m looking for in a self help or inspirational book. I have decided to DNF this book at 32%.
