I love myth retellings and Hades and Persephone's story is one of my favorites so when I saw Amelia Wilde's book I knew I had to read it and I am so happy I did because it was exquisite. I am familiar with her writing style and yet again she delivered a beautiful and captivating story.
All her life Persephone was sheltered from the world. Her mother's only desire is to protect her from the evil lurking outside the walls of their estate, but in doing so she only fuels Persephone's curiosity about what adventure awaits in the city and the desire to be independent. At age twenty she dreams of being in love and making her own life, away from her mother's suffocating grip and when the opportunity presents itself she doesn't hesitate to take it. She can almost taste freedom, but her plan goes sideways when Persephone encounters Luther Hades. He is a ruthless man, a devil some call him and his eyes are set on her. And when the devil wants something he always gets it. Finding herself in a desperate situation she has no choice than to strike a bargain with this cruel but handsome man, and by doing so Persephone exchanges one prison for another.
"Don't hide your tears from me, I want to see them all."
The tension and chemistry between Persephone and Hades are strong for the beginning. The raw attraction she feels towards him is something she can not control and giving into her desires seems to be the only way to stop constantly thinking about. She is a naive girl but with a strong personality, her survival instincts make her submissive but there is also fire burning in her heart. And Hades tries his best to behave like the cruel man everyone thinks he is, but being around Persephone changes something inside him, tenderness flows through his cold heart. Their interactions were beautifully presented, I found myself holding my breath through most of the chapters.
"I'm tempting death itself. Death in a white dress shirt. Death in his eyes- a warning, a promise. Violence all wrapped up in expensive cloth!"
The story is told from dual POV, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The plot was definitely interesting, with mystery surrounding the characters, and the threat of something dangerous lurking in the shadows. It was interesting to see Hades interact with his brother Zeus, there's definitely an old grudge between then and I would have wanted more details about their relationship and the connection between them and Persephone's mother, but seeing as the book ends with a heartbreaking cliffhanger, I expect we'll get more details about them in the next book.
Sexy, alluring and emotional this book is a superb version of a classic tale. A modern and enthralling retelling I wholeheartedly recommend and I can’t wait to see what the rest of this series holds!

Lately I've been in a bit of a book funk and nothing was grabbing my attention. That was until I started reading this. I thought I would read just a few pages to get a feel of the story. Before I realised it, I was already half way through the book in the blink of an eye! There was something captivating in the way the story pulled me in and wrapped itself around me. This is the third retelling of ancient myths I've read but I think is the possibly the best one I've read so far. One of the others I read wasn't able to grab my attention and hold it the way this one did.
Hades is a fascinating character. He lives up to the book title. He is a master of the shadows and much of his intentions are hidden in the darkness. I was glad the story had a dual point of view because that's when we get to see glimpses of Hades' thought process. But even then, it is still uncertain about what his true intentions are. Sepphie or Persephone was a good character but at times I found her frustrating. She was naive and a bit of a cry baby however I had to remind myself that she had been sheltered most of her life and rather given the chance to experience life the way others did. In that regard, I understood her confusion and conflict.
There is a lot of questions still unanswered and hidden motives of people around Persephone. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store for Hades and Persephone. And I'm especially looking forward to seeing more of Hades.

Now I've read this twice... that's right, TWICE! I couldn't get enough of him in the first round, that I had to go back to the beginning and read it ALL OVER AGAIN! That is how much this story drew me in and wouldn't let me go. How do you turn away from Luther Hades?! When you figure out how, let me know, cause I need my brain and soul back.
Let's start with the king himself... Luther Hades. King of the Underworld. Prince of Darkness. The Devil himself. This man... no, this GOD is everything I wanted him to be. Dark, alpha, dominating, and real. He knows himself, and won't take sh*t from anyone, while taking what he wants... like Persephone. While he draws the darkness to him, he can't turn away from the light that she is, so why not take it and bend it to his will, while tasting the tears along the way. The process is absolutely delicious, and you won't want to look away.
Persephone. Sheltered, innocent spirit. She never had a chance against him. Hades draws out all of the secrets that hide in the shadows of her mind and uses them to play her like a finely tuned violin. Her internal struggle is sweet, but her final decent into the darkness of her passions is beautiful.
This is a perfect retelling of a classic mythological tale. It's intense, and will have you so fully under its spell you won't want to come back to reality. So when you do, you'll be begging like me for the next installment, Summer Queen... Between you and me, it's too far off for my liking.

This is an insta- capitulation story - normally that doesn't work for me - But with Persephone and Luther, it felt natural.
As the story progressed I found myself curious more involved
it was the little things -

Simple acts
That drew me in had me wanting to peek ahead just to reassure myself - I didn't though but it was tempting
I'm still trying to figure out Luther's weakness - besides Persephone -
He has everything a man(?) could want but for what Demeter can provide him, which I think I know but it doesn't fit, has me at a loss.
His character seems empty void of empathy, but if that was true what about Conor?
Persephone, on the other hand, is just a hormone-driven little nymph. She reminds me a bit like someone with a chocolate addiction. She knows better than to indulge but OMG the way it melts in your mouth, the burst of flavors on your tongue - more! I gave her a pass because for some reason despite her not so innocent innocence I liked her character.
Then there is sweet innocent eyed Decker who only wants to give Persephone the world (hack, cough)
This ends on a cliffhanger leaving me with all my original questions and even a couple more I didn't originally have because everything just changed

I have been sitting here for a few days now trying to review this book and actually do it justice. My mind is blown. I have been speechless.
Amelia Wilde is still a fairly new author to me. I recently read a collaboration she did with Skye Warren and it's got me intrigued to read her solo work and I was not disappointed.
King of Shadows was phenomenal in sense of the word. Honestly, though, I wouldn't call this a romance. It had elements of a romance story, like lust and desire but there was so much more than that in this story.
This is a retelling and a new kind of to version of Persephone and Hades and I have to say it's probably my favorite to date. I have read a handful of myth/retellings and this one just works so well for me and I couldn't help but get lost in this plot. The way the author wrote these characters out was perfect.
Persephone is naive and sheltered, she only knows what her mother, Demeter wants her to know and wants her to believe. She's been told if she ever sees Hades run and hide, and that Hades is one that is not to be trusted.
Hades makes deals with people, these people owe him one way or another and he collects. Persephone makes a deal and it sparks a plan in Hade's mind and he runs with it, but what he didn't realize would happen when it came to this naive young woman... What started out as a deal has turned into so much more.
These two couldn't help but need each other away. Persephone has always been told to run from this man, but she finds herself running to him, rather than away. She needs him and he needs her. But will these two be able to have what they want and need or will it fall to pieces and will they be torn away from each other?
What transpires throughout the book and the way this retelling was told was captivating, dark, intense, intriguing and had my mind on overdrive. I was addicted from page one and completely lost myself into the plot. Ms. Wilde did an incredible job retelling this from the big and well-known events to the smaller details that she added in. It truly was a one of a kind read and I can't wait to check out the rest of her solo work!

The sexual tension between Persephone and Hades had me jizzing. Multiple times. The teasing. I almost cried with want. But when he FINALLY gave her his big dick, it was so worth the wait. Yum and hallefuckinglujah. I was sore just from reading it. And I'm no virgin like poor, sweet P. Nah, she ain't poor. She's one lucky young woman.

OMGosh!! This was such a great read. I love when Amelia writes dark romance. This is a retelling and updated version of Persephone and Hades. I was hooked into this story once I started and couldn’t put it down until I was finished. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. Persephone has only known what her mother, Demeter tells her. She has been so sheltered and has been told to never trust Hades, and if she sees him, to run. Hades lives in his mansion that is built onto the mountain. He makes deals with people all the time and these people owe him in one way or another. When Persephone trades her life for Decker, Hades sees a plan form in his mind and accepts it. What happens between them turns into more than a deal they made. These two realize that they need each other and instead of running away from Hades, Persephone wants to run to him. Will these two be able to have what they want or will it be torn apart? I love the start Hades and Persephone’s story. This is dark, suspenseful and a little twisted with an alpha that will do whatever it takes to keep the object he is starting to care for with him forever.

OH MY HELL! King of Shadows was absolutely EPIC, and anyone waiting to read it, needs to reevaluate because it's too great to miss out on! Hades & Persephone's story has always intrigued me, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can honestly say it was better than any expectation I may have had! Persephone has been sheltered from real life, as her mother was over the top when trying to protect her daughter from any and/or ALL evil outside their estate. Of course, it didn't have the effect she was hoping for since it made Persephone was only all the more curious about the world as a consequence, which leads to her finally escaping to come across Luther Hades. He's not a good guy, as most call him a devil, and yet, no one can stop him. And now he has his eye firmly on Persephone, and he will have her. She figures out quickly that she's traded her childhood prison for a new one, and the only way she can deal is by making a deal with the cruel man. However, she never dreamed that she would be so strongly attracted to the ruthless man, and he kept trying to play the devil card. This story was brilliant in all it's breathtaking glory, and I can honestly say that I'll revisit it over & over again in the coming years. This book. Wow, this book. This is something a bit different from this author, but it is so, so good. Luthor Hades is a loner of sorts. He's tough, brusque, and all man. He likes things his way and doesn't take no for an answer when He wants something.
"He tastes like snow and fire and the burn of some searing alcohol I can’t begin to name. "
Persephone is used to one way of life with her mother. All she wants is escape. Go to New York library and see it in person. She thought she found a way out, but things change greatly. She makes a deal with the devil.
"I am destroyed, and I’m looking at a man on the verge of his own destruction. "
These two are as old as time. Vastly different from the other but they find something with each other. A different kind of life. Hades doesn't like what he feels for her, but can't deny it. Persephone finds a different kind of life than the one she lives before but one still full. Will they be able to hold what they found or will it be ripped away from them.

Persephone and Hades with a twist
It’s been a while since I read a retelling, and this one was a modern retelling of Persephone and Hades.
Persephone is a 20-year-old virgin who has been sheltered all of her life. Her mom, Demeter, is very protective and is constantly scaring her about the real world. She warns her against Hades, saying that he’s a killer and will grab her and murder her the first chance that he gets. Persephone has a lot of dreams, one of them is to go visit the New York library because she loves books. But that would mean that she would have to leave her house, and that’s never possible since she’s never left alone. Until the chance to escape comes in the form of a friendship she secretly formed with a worker, Decker.
Decker forms a plan to take Persephone out of her house; and she goes to meet him at the train station, she doesn’t find him right away, then she finds Hades strangling him. Persephone acts quickly and exchanges her life for Decker’s so that Hades doesn’t kill him. Hades accepts with the provision that she will do whatever he wants, and she gladly agrees as long as Decker leaves unharmed.
Right away, the tension between Hades and Persephone surfaces. She’s a virgin, so she’s inexperienced, and Hades is more than willing to experience her up LOL. He knows exactly how to work her, and she accepts it all because she needs to. Although we only get one smexy scene (with a couple of appetizers) it was so steamy 🥵🔥. Hades really REALLY preps her 👅👉🏻💦 which I enjoyed👀😅. Plus, he takes care of her so well after 🥰. Even the teasers before were scrumptious.
Obviously, this ends in a cliffy. I’m so glad I own the trilogy because I need to know what happens! There are a lot of unanswered questions that I have, like to what extent will Demeter go to get her daughter back, which is what happens in mythology. What does Hades actually do? What is the connection between Hades, Demeter, and even Persephone (in this series… obviously I know the mythology of it all).
Things I didn’t like- I wasn’t too keen on the humiliation/voyeur parts, at least the public ones. When they were in private, I was all for it. It’s just my personal preference 🤷🏻♀️. I also wanted more of an emotional connection- like when Hades takes Persephone’s virginity- it was hot, but for her first time, so impersonal ugh. Maybe looking into her eyes would’ve really solidified their connection, because staring at her back doesn’t equate a connection to me😏. His feelings start sparking when he forces her to get waxed while he watches (and she doesn’t know he’s watching but is humiliated anyway), but I needed more of this 😬.
Overall, I enjoyed it just because I know there are two more books, so I can overlook my dislikes for now as long as I see growth in the next book.
⚠️ safety squad⚠️ (spoilers ahead)
-no cheating/sharing/owd
-some OMD- the h has an emotional relationship with OM, especially in the beginning, but they’ve never even kissed* (another reader says that they kissed in the prequel, but I don't have access to it, so I'm going to take the reader's word for it)
-humiliation- the H forces her to crawl to him and kneel. The h is also forced to get waxed and cleaned up by the H’s female servants, and he forces an O from the h (voyeuristic)
-the H basically gets the h naked on a glass platform overlooking hundreds of workers and forces her to O in front of them😐 more specifically, he does this to show OM that the h is his 🔥
-a dog gets shot 😩😩😩 I know this is triggery for many, and I don’t even know if he survived (he was protecting the h). I hope he survived 😩🥺 (I need to read book 2 to find out)
-h is a virgin/H isn't a manwhore but his brother Zeus tries to get him to be one
-ends on a huge cliffy

She warns her against Hades, saying that he’s a killer and will grab her and murder her the first chance that he gets. Persephone has a lot of dreams, one of them is to go visit the New York library because she loves books. But that would mean that she would have to leave her house, and that’s never possible since she’s never left alone. Until the chance to escape comes in the form of a friendship she secretly formed with a worker, Decker.
Decker forms a plan to take Persephone out of her house; and she goes to meet him at the train station, she doesn’t find him right away, then she finds Hades strangling him. Persephone acts quickly and exchanges her life for Decker’s so that Hades doesn’t kill him. Hades accepts with the provision that she will do whatever he wants, and she gladly agrees as long as Decker leaves unharmed.
Right away, the tension between Hades and Persephone surfaces. She’s a virgin, so she’s inexperienced, and Hades is more than willing to experience her up LOL. He knows exactly how to work her, and she accepts it all because she needs to. Although we only get one smexy scene (with a couple of appetizers) it was so steamy 🥵🔥. Hades really REALLY preps her 👅👉🏻💦 which I enjoyed👀😅. Plus, he takes care of her so well after 🥰. Even the teasers before were scrumptious.
Obviously, this ends in a cliffy. I’m so glad I own the trilogy because I need to know what happens! There are a lot of unanswered questions that I have, like to what extent will Demeter go to get her daughter back, which is what happens in mythology. What does Hades actually do? What is the connection between Hades, Demeter, and even Persephone (in this series… obviously I know the mythology of it all).
Things I didn’t like- I wasn’t too keen on the humiliation/voyeur parts, at least the public ones. When they were in private, I was all for it. It’s just my personal preference 🤷🏻♀️. I also wanted more of an emotional connection- like when Hades takes Persephone’s virginity- it was hot, but for her first time, so impersonal ugh. Maybe looking into her eyes would’ve really solidified their connection, because staring at her back doesn’t equate a connection to me😏. His feelings start sparking when he forces her to get waxed while he watches (and she doesn’t know he’s watching but is humiliated anyway), but I needed more of this 😬.
Overall, I enjoyed it just because I know there are two more books, so I can overlook my dislikes for now as long as I see growth in the next book.

-some OMD- the h has an emotional relationship with OM, especially in the beginning, but they’ve never even kissed* (another reader says that they kissed in the prequel, but I don't have access to it, so I'm going to take the reader's word for it)
-humiliation- the H forces her to crawl to him and kneel. The h is also forced to get waxed and cleaned up by the H’s female servants, and he forces an O from the h (voyeuristic)
-the H basically gets the h naked on a glass platform overlooking hundreds of workers and forces her to O in front of them😐 more specifically, he does this to show OM that the h is his 🔥
-a dog gets shot 😩😩😩 I know this is triggery for many, and I don’t even know if he survived (he was protecting the h). I hope he survived 😩🥺 (I need to read book 2 to find out)

King of Shadows is the first book that I have read by this author and is the first book in this series. Because at the end of this book is a huge cliffie! The kind that says OH NO, WHAT the you know what!

I have no words. This book was phenomenal! Absolutely phenomenal!! I love ruthless, heartless, sexy, alpha male Hades. So much drama, action, intense, raw, hot, your-eyes-will-be-glued-to-this-book goodness. Loved it. There is a cliffhanger. Need book #2 now.

I love Greek mythology. The myth of Hades and Persephone? Favorite story of all time. I’ve pretty much read every book about these two. So, when I saw the sign up for ARCs for King of Shadows and read that it’s a retelling of said myth? I had to have it and read it. I was so happy when I got the Kindle notification about it.
Quick summary of this myth, if you don’t know about it:
Zeus (king of gods and god of lightning) and Demeter (goddess of agriculture and fertility) had an affair, of which Persephone was born. Demeter loved her daughter very much, and she liked to keep her close, unfamiliar of the world’s ways, innocent and naive. (Some versions of the story say that Demeter liked to dress Persephone as a little girl, even though she was a young woman already.)
One sunny day, Persephone was walking through her mother’s fields. Hades, who had drawn the short straw and had become a king of the Underworld, hated and feared from mortals and immortals alike, saw her and fell in love with her. He captured her and with his chariot kidnapped her into his kingdom.
Now, some versions say that Hades got permission from Zeus to take Persephone into the Underworld, some say he asked, but was neither denied or allowed to, and some say he didn’t ask at all.
When Demeter finds out her precious daughter is missing, she gets very distraught, searching lands near and far for her, forgetting her duties with the earth and all plants. After a while, she learns where Persephone is (how she learned this also vary) and threatens Zeus that if she does not get her daughter back, she’s gonna stop taking care of trees and plants and let humankind die from starvation.
Meanwhile, according to other myths, Hades puts a throne next to his for Persephone and threads her more like a friend, than a thing and even gives her power over the Underworld. Eventually, Persephone also falls in love with him.
Finally, Zeus sends Hermes (the gods’ messenger) to get Persephone from Hades. More versions about what happens, and how exactly, but there’s one thing in common: At some point, Persephone eats pomegranate seeds (forced or out of her own will) (also, could be taken as a metaphor, as in taking his seed). In Greek mythology, anyone, who eats food from the Underworld is bound to stay there.
The result is the same, Persephone is to spend some time of the year with her mother, Demeter, tending to the lands, and the rest with Hades, ruling over the kingdom of the dead.
And this is the myth of how seasons came to be – Persephone helping Demeter through spring and summer, keeping her happy, and then when the time to go to Hades comes, Demeter forgets to tend to the lands out of sadness and that’s known as fall and winter.
Now, back to Kind of Shadows and the point of this oh-so-long post.
I was ecstatic to start this book. It was dark, let me tell you that. The blurb did not lie. We meet Persephone, who at that point is pretty much her mother’s captive. She has spent most of her life in her mother’s garden and is sick of it. Logically, she tries to leave – and is captured by Luther Hades. A man her mother has spent her entire life warning her about. Not on a chariot, sadly. But on a train.
I loved the erotica in this book. It was exactly as it promised it’d be – dark, erotic and dirty.
And here’s where I got so. furious. It’s small things that get me so mad but, when you love this story as much as I do, small things tend to be big things.
Hades is… blond. I didn’t mind that he was a big asshole, a villain, criminal and whatever not, but… He’s, quite literally, the king of shadows. Not the freaking sun, flowers, living, cupid, etc. He’s the representation of Death itself, so, someone please tell me, Why. The Hell. Is. He. Blond?
Did I mention he’s such a sweetie? I loved him. And his dog. You can’t go wrong with a man that loves dogs, can you?
There were some hints of Hades and Persephone (probably not knowing about them) having powers, but I didn’t see any magic use? Aside from a few mentions of the shadows behaving strangely around Hades. I was sad about that, I really wanted some power to go around.

I am HOOKED! SHOOK! Seriously OBSESSED! This story has me GRIPPED! Hades is EVERYTHING! Even when I hate him (and WOAH MAMA.. I hated him), I loved him!
If you like alpha anti-heroes. Men that push your boundaries. Men that make you HATE them while you climb up them to kiss them. Men that are sooooo wrong but SO, SO RIGHT! Then you MUST READ this book!

King Of Shadows is the re telling of a famous Greek mythology about Persephone and Hades. It was dark at times, troubling, and the story itself held on to a modern feel while still keeping the classic mythology.
When I first read the blurb for this book, I instantly fell in love and knew that I had to read it without ever having read Hades and Persephone story before. Now that I’ve finished this story, I can honestly say that was a big mistake. I did not appreciate this story as much as I would have and try as I might, I didn’t feel the connection between these characters. Something was missing for me and whether it was my lack of knowledge on the story itself or my inability to fully connect with and understand these characters, I had a bit of a hard time fully enjoying this.
Sheltered all of her life by a mother who tiptoe on the line of crazy, Persephone decides that now is the time to escape from her mother's grasp. With a plan intact and help from a friend, she’s so close to having a normal life and experiencing freedom. But in the blink of an eye, everything changes when she gets kidnapped by the man she was taught to fear.
They say you never make a deal with the devil but for Persephone, that is now her only option of staying alive. Hades is ruthless and if he wants something, he's going to have it regardless of the consequences. But for a powerful man like Hades, he was not expecting to have someone like Persephone walk into his life and turn not only his life upside down, but his feelings as well.
As I’ve said before, I don’t think that I was fully able to enjoy the true story. I really liked the writing style and how this author makes you want to know more and the underlying history of everything. Even though I couldn’t appreciate it as much as I would have hoped, I still think that if you’re a fan of this Greek mythology, then you’re going to love this one.

King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde is the sexy, twenty-first century retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades. Persephone is hidden away by her mother, almost to the point of smothering her, she isn’t allowed to experience the outside world for fear of men trying to kidnap and hurt her. One night, she has arranged to escape with her friend (maybe more) Dereck but is caught by Luther Hades and told to choose, her life for her lovers. Herein lies the story of how Hades captured Persephone and the journey their story takes.
Persephone is certainly intrigued by Hades, after all, he is dark, handsome, gritty and sexual…all of the things she wants to experience but is afraid to. We also see the darker side of Hades in this book, he is demanding, deviant and will stop at nothing to devour Persephone and often he can be cruel in how he treats Persephone.
What I really liked about this story is how up to date it was but how relatable the characters were. You could see Persephone being in the flower fields, wanting to escape and being a bit naïve. You can see Hades owning a huge company that might be under threat and him being all dominant and only caring about his dog.
There are a lot of conflict of feelings from both characters and it was good to see both POV’s which definitely makes the characters appear more human and emotional. Sexy scenes and chemistry between the two are hot and there are certainly a lot of twist and turns in this book to keep you turning the page. Alas, there is also a cliff-hanger…how we hate those! But it will definitely leave you wanting to read more of this story and what is going to happen to both Persephone and Hades.

Warning- CLIFFHANGER- and it is absolutely devastating, but that just means that the first book was amazing and the second one is highly anticipated!
This book was absolutely sinful! I loved to play on mythology with the story and plot, Hades being the "King of Shadows" and Persephone the naive and innocent daughter of Demeter. When these two meet fate happens and Persephone finds herself in his possession, but the question is if she will survive and/or if she will like his carnal ways.
Hot, hot, hot--- this book is dark romance was so freaking good and I loved every second of it. Well, at least until I was at the end of ended up with the mother of all cliffhangers. But anywho, I want to know what happens next so I will DEFINITELY be waiting (semi)patiently for the next book!

King of Shadows is a modern take on the story of Hades and Persephone. Persephone has grown up in almost complete seclusion on her mother’s flower farm. She and her would be boyfriend, Decker, make a plan to escape to the city. On the night they decide to flee, Decker makes the mistake of trying to use a train car belonging to Luther Hades. Hades catches and tries to kill Decker but Persephone interferes and bargains with Hades to let Decker live. A deal struck, Persephone goes with Hades to his underground fortress. The two develop a hot and shameful bond complete with a lot of edging. You curse and root for Hades all at the same time. This was gripping retelling that leaves you with a good cliffhanger.

Amelia Wilde is a new to me author, but I've been on a Hades and Persephone kick lately so I decided to give this book a try. I was definitely not disappointed! This is one the best Hades and Persephone retellings I've read so far. Ms. Wilde put an interesting twist on this well known and myth. Hades is so deliciously alpha and quite the dirty talker. Is he the villain in this story? It's unclear. But he rules his "underworld" with the iron fist. Persephone's character is a lot more straightforward. She is sheltered and naive, a light to Hades's darkness, but not without a naughty side of her own. I'm very intrigued to find out more about Demeter and Zeus. What are their motivations? Demeter and her connection to Hades and Zeus seems especially interesting. The book is both a slow burn and scorching hot from the start. You'll have to read to find out how that's possible, but Ms. Wilde created so much chemistry and sizzle that I was worried for my kindle overheating. The book ends on a huge cliffhanger, but book two is available for pre-order.

I have to be honest, I didn't much appreciate this story...
Knowing the actual mythology of Hades and Persephone, doesn't really hold the fort of credibility here, even if it was taken just as a sample or inspiration, which definitely is not applied in here.
So the actual names are obviously here, and the actual mythology plot is applied here as well, so I'm just wondering what's the point setting it in this century at all, when the dialogues don't work, they are awkward and sometimes even senseless...and I don't really get the reasoning for any action of the mentioned characters...
Yeah, I know it's book 1 and I know it's a trilogy, but honestly I don't see where this is going at all, since it's so close to the myth...
the writing is solid, apart from the mentioned dialogues...
it was an okay read, and maybe it would appeal more to anyone who is not familiar with the mythology BUT then again, it also might not be suitable for the younger public...

King of Shadows by Amelia Wilde had me hooked from the first chapter! Persephone lives with her paranoid mother Demeter, trapped in her home and unable to escape to the outside world. She meets a worker, Decker, and they plan to escape and go to the New York Public Library (her dream). The night of their escape, when she arrives at the train that is supposed to take them away, Luther Hades is there and catches them. He begins to kill Decker, and Persephone saves his life by trading hers. She is now owned by Hades and they travel to the mountain, where he lives. Hades isn't prepared for the emotions Persephone causes inside of him, and Persephone tries to fight her lust and want of Hades and her desire to be free. I loved Persephone and Hades' relationship. It was so steamy and hot. I liked how she slowly broke through his walls, and the small moments of intimacy between them were great. Hades could be such a softie for Persephone. Hades' dog Conor was also really cute, even though he was growling the majority of the book. There is a much bigger story involving Zeus and Demeter, but it was only ever hinted at throughout. The main plot is just Persephone and Hades' evolving relationship and her conflicting feelings of trying to escape the mountain and wanting to stay with Hades. I couldn't put this book down and had to know what happened at the end, only to reach a cliffhanger! So now I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment. Overall, this was a great retelling, with lots of mystery and great chemistry.

Persephone has lived a sheltered life with her mom with very little access to the outside world. Her mom has always told her if Luther Hades finds her then he will kill her, and she had to stay safe. At 20 years old, Persephone doesn’t feel like she can live under this shelter anymore. She walks right in to Luther Hades trap and what she finds is equal parts terrifying and attractive. Hades is vindictive, ruthless, and cold, but he finds a weakness in Persephone that he never anticipates.
This book blew my mind a little bit. It’s not what I was anticipating, but it was smoldering and amazing as well as a little suspenseful all at the same time. Cliff hanger alert though, so I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel.

I wasn’t sure I would like this book when I started.
However, very quickly I realized I was wrong!
I couldn’t read it fast enough. I fell in love with both our main characters. Hades in all his nasty glory and Persephone who realized quickly she couldn’t stop the inevitable.
I highly suggest reading this book though if you are not one for cliffhangers I suggest waiting until part two come out this summer.
I have not read much by Amelia Wilde and that is a mistake-I will be reading more soon.
