Dark Halos #1

The Demon Prince

Rate this book
For years, I’ve had dreams about talking to the Devil. They’re not nightmares, in fact, they’re far from it, but they’re not normal either. Honestly, I’m not even sure what about my life is...

I’m a witch that sucks at casting magic.

My hair has a mind of its own.

I’ve scared the crap out of my roommate countless times by floating while I sleep.

Oh, and let’s not forget the icing on the cake. My eyes turn completely black when I get pissed off, though I’ve gotten much better about controlling it.

And yet, I wonder why I’m single. Go figure.

As it turns out, guys don’t dig that last part.

I’m pretty sure if you looked up the definition of chaos, it would say, “Alice Whittaker’s life.’

Growing up, I always thought my namesake would prove true and I’d get a fairytale of my own. Afterall, I lived in a world where magic existed, so why not hope?

But instead of a rabbit, what came to whisk me away was a beast with green eyes. And instead of taking me to Wonderland, it kidnapped and brought me to Hell…What worse, is that I’m supposed to marry its prince.

So, all aboard the hot mess express, ladies and gents, because I have no idea how I'm going to get out of this one. And what’s scarier, is I don’t know if I want to.

This is a dark fantasy romance that features tropes such as, enemies to lovers, forced / arranged marriage, royalty, and is intended for audiences 18+ years of age. There is mature content and steamy scenes that might not be suitable for everyone. It is told in first person, present tense and is dual point of view (meaning told by both the male and female main characters) and features characters from other books I've written.

It's not you, it's me.

I mean, not really, but I'm trying to be nice here.

The writing is good, the smut is decent, and the plot... sigh. Alice couldn't be more ✨I'm not like other girls✨ if she tried.

I hate it when the female lead acts like she couldn't care less what she looks like (messy hair, no make-up, black spots beneath her eyes) and then gets "forced" to wear clothes that reveal little to nothing, and all of a sudden she's the hottest mess on this planet?

And let's not forget that every dude in this book would love to **** her.

No, thanks.

I just made the mistake of skimming through the reviews before picking this up, and now I'm scared because most of them were bad 🙈

This was a lighthearted and quick read with an interesting take on 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥, 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬.
Unfortunately it failed to be a grandiose read since this book was described as 𝐀 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 but was definitely nowhere near light grey in my opinion. Maybe i am too deep in the dark genre to see it here, 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲. But if we are honest with each other, i doubt this was a me not you situation here.
Both characters were a 𝐦𝐢𝐱 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐲, 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐭 𝐀𝐅 with great spice scenes and dialogues, but despite it all the story didn't fully catch my attention and enrapt me.
Dont get me wrong the premise of this book had a lot of potential but it lacked in both development and depth. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬, 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬. I guess as long as you don't expect this to be anything grand it will be a nice fun read with popular elements.

DNF hated the FMC

This book started out good. The plot had the potential to be really good. I love books about witches and demons, but this one missed the mark. Alice was in my opinion an absolute B$&ch. I do like a stubborn female lead but at some point that needs to wear off. She fought him at every turn. It was annoying. Her character was so annoying i got fed up and I stopped reading at 74%. The male leads best friend Finn is a shitty friend. Who has a pissing contest over your “best friends” wife?! I could go in but at this point I’m just ranting.

This is my third book by this author. I’m officially done with her books. Here’s why:

First, the good: the characters and plot are often quite good. They are interesting and lively with lots of twists and turns and interesting developments. And the heroine is always plucky and mouthy and sassy and strong.

But…here’s where she loses me. It’s the same characters almost each book. The main characters from Monster Roommate and this book are almost identical, at least so far. And the pattern and patter are the same.

In both, the hero is an asshole. He says mean things and refuses to apologize. He calls her “princess” in both and says mean things “for her own good” and keeps info from her “for her own good”

In both, the heroine is strong and sassy and meets him quip for quip. She does not like being called princess (they don’t say it but it is because the name is meant to be condescending and demeaning).

In both, the heroine lacks info about her own situation and the hero has that information. In both cases, he expects her to adjust to change instantly and condescends to her when she doesn’t.

Both heroes make the heroines cry.

I am just so disappointed. I love the plot but the dynamic is both repetitive and jarring.

I just end up feeling like the female is a strong and smart and capable person being saddled with a mean, manipulative bastard. It’s sad. And perhaps this is just for me and it hits too close to home.

☞ Trigger warnings: **contains spoilers**

I'm actually pissed because this had such good potential. I was living, laughing, loving it and I was giggling in bed at 2am because of how fun this book was. I hit the 70% mark and my feelings about this book started to sour. I want to dnf at 86%. The only reason I didn't was because I had like 20min left of this book. I did the thing that I heavily don't recommend, I persevered and finished the book. I skimmed the ending and I am now wrung out. The question is - what went wrong and how did it get to the point where I didn't want to go on.
description

Firstly, lets start with the good and redeemable qualities:
Kai was hot. I liked Kai. Kai is the main male character who is the son of the King of Hell and is being made to marry Alice, the main female character, so that when Hell and Heaven go to war, Hell will have two very powerful nephilim to fight against the archangels. The chapters of Kai's P.O.V.'s where surprisingly the highlight of the book. I understood his motivations, I understood the emotions he was having and I felt empathy when he was in tough positions. As a reader, I tend to prefer female lead single P.O.V. stories, and I prefer only brief glimpses of the main male character. This book let me let go of that preference and enjoy an almost equal glimpse into both characters P.O.V.

Before we go into the other P.O.V. of this story, I would like to say that the other stand out was the banter between Kai and Alice. It was funny, it was raunchy and it was what kept the story alive. The spicy scenes were oh so spicy and the sexual tension was electric. The two characters felt like they were constantly either going to jump each others bones or light each others bones on literal hellfire. I love that hot and even hotter environment where the two of them had this budding relationship but because of their powers, tempers and the plot the tension could go from sexy to dangerous and back again. Loved it.

Since there were hits, that means there were misses. The things that didn't hit the mark:
The plot got a little confusing with the family bloodlines and the mixing of Greek mythology and Christianity. Hades is also Lucifer but Zeus is another guy and Pan is here I guess and he is evil and some random guy is also here and he's not good either but not in Greek myth but is also related to Zeus... huh???

Speaking of family, Alice recieved a necklace that can see between realms. Does that mean she can see into heaven?? Idk man I think she should try and see other things than her auntie and uncle eating dinner but thats just me... I'm nosy like that. But also theres a war about to happen. I think spying on people including Angels is fair game and good strategy but whatever that's a very little bone to pick in the scheme of things.

The bigger bone to pick is just straight up Alice. What can one lament about the most annoying person to every exist in all three planes of existance. What can be described about this one of a kind character that makes me wish I stuck my head through the wall. Alice had this annoying and consistent trait of being wrong, knowing she's wrong or at least unreasonable, and continuing to push out of pride and not wishing to give in. I get the distaste of admitting your wrong, and I get the fear of not being in control, and the one thing you have is your voice and your stubbornness but bloody hell woman get a grip. Half the time the author brings in the fact that Alice has a hot temper because she's a witch or something or maybe because she's a red head but that doesn't make her character interesting when she's being a bone head, especially in dangerous situations. Imagine being wrong, but not just wrong but being loudly wrong with your whole chest. Embarrasing. Add to that the fact that she does this in a dangerous forest and I want to reach into the book and punch her in the throat.
description
I don't know what happened but at the 70% mark my third eye opened and I realised that her character was the most infuriating, dumb arse that I kind of wished got her shit rocked so her character felt deaths door and matured a little. It was kind of stupid that she thought she could just go home after all this was said and done like she wasn't going to be a different person in a world that doesn't fit her anymore like girl bffr right now... Home is Hell. You can visit your parents after this is through. Homies can teleport, it's not like you're stuck and you won't see them again. You don't have to wait for a full moon or for Halloween or whatever, like once the war is done you can visit on weekends or whatever like relax. I prayed she got better and my answers went unanswered (which is funny because according to the lore, God is missing so it's unlikely any prayers are being answered at the moment). Alice was still unsufferable and I basically skimmed the last 20% until the claws of this book let me go.
description

My last gripes:
- There weren't enough hell hounds and I didn't get to see Cerebrius. I bet Cerebrius is such a good boy but we didn't get to see how good a boy he was. 0/10.
- Also Finn kind of sucks a best friend.
- Charlie didn't really feel like a real best friend and the fact that she just disappeared is kind of funny. She served her purpose and she is relegated to not exist again lol. I get why as she's in a different realm, human, and isn't very important in the grand scheme of things but it's still funny.
- Please tell me why the fuck the map was at the end of the book??? Who does that?? Maps go to the front!!! Everyone knows that. Stupid.

I got to go to bed and read something to calm me down and it won't be the sequel to this I assure you.

Would I recommend this book?
Dark Romance lovers will love this book, especially if you loved A Touch of Darkness or Neon Gods (both books I wasn't fans of). There is an audience for this book, and unfortunately it wasn't me. It was almost me but it let me slip through its fingers and I will never forgive this book from relieving me of joy.

Will I continue reading this series?
Nah I think I'll leave the series here. I'm good with not knowing the ending to the story and the couple are already together so whats the point.

Will I re-read this book?
No. I have my favourites that I will read and this doesn't come close.

2.5 stars., rounding down. With this topic and so many stories I love mashed up in it, this should have been my jam. Instead I’m hating on it. I have a list and need to vent.

First thing that was problematic was that it was a mash up of too many things. The things that were mashed up were all things I loved, but it was way too much crossover and made it confusing and full as heck of the author teaching you about the complex rules of the world to take you out of it. The mash up includes:
-biblical characters including angels and demons
-Alice in Wonderland
-Peter Pan
-ancient mythology (Greek, Roman, mash up of both?)
-the tv show Lucifer

These are all great on their own, I’m a huge sucker for fictional angels and demons, but together they just seemed like overkill. I’d rather she created her own unique characters instead of borrowing everything she could think of to piece together like a Frankenstein.

Alice, the heroine, was crass and ungrateful af.

The devils (Lucifer and Kai) don’t do anything evil in this book. Not one single evil thing. Why make them demons? I keep seeing this in other books and I hate it. False advertising.

I also thought from the teaser that Alice was going to marry Lucifer. Instead she was going to marry his son and Lucifer ended up being this perfectly reasonable, considerate level headed father in law type.

The author’s writing style was not fun to read and some parts were even anxiety provoking. I was irritated by her style many times, whether it was typos, super cliche words and phrases during the sex scenes, or just trying to be fancy with long sentences that were confusing. She did have a lot of action scenes and some plot points that were unpredictable on the plus side.

Almost didn’t finish and I won’t be reading any more of her work, sequels to this one included, if I can remember not to.

I had an amazing opportunity to receive an ARC from Amanda, I am so glad that I did. I was not let down! The book was phenomenal and I fell in love with it instantly. I won’t say to much because I am not a book spoiler but I will say that Kai and Alice have an amazing chemistry and this gives us the perfect romance. This book has a little bit of everything darkness, humor, angst, and steam. Throw in Hell, Peter Pan some Alice and wonderland mixed with archangels and gods and you've got an amazing fantasy romance. I can not wait for book two!! I can only hope that there will be more punch in the next book as well 😋.

P.S the HP references were fun and an added bonus.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As always please check your TW before reading this book!
Happy reading! I hope you love Kai as much as I did!!

2.5⭐️ rounded up

This was a quick read on Kindle Unlimited with an interesting amalgamation of Greek mythology, fairytales, and Christianity. Kai is the son of Lucifer (aka Hades) and Persephone and Alice is part archangel and witch. They are the promise for a coming war against archangel, Michael.

Alice has grown up on Earth for 20 years with no idea of her past or details of her parentage. So she’s a typical 20 year old going to frat parties and hanging with friends. She and Kai have instant chemistry and spice ensues.

I saw some readers describe Kai as “dark” and this as a “dark fantasy romance” but it definitely didn’t seem dark in my opinion. I didn’t think any of the themes were dark and Kai (and really Lucifer) are clearly the “good” guys and hold the moral high ground. She is sort of kidnapped, but not really. She is attacked and threatened but fights them off before it proceeds very far. Kai is possessive, but nothing more than anything else in the genre to make it darker.

✅arranged marriage
✅sassy FMC
✅arrogant and hot MMC
✅variable MF spice
✅chosen one
✅angels, demons, witches, different kinds of magic, mythology, modern earth with other realms
✅Ends on a “HFN” and “TBC” - book 1 of 3

I’m not sure if I would’ve finished this book if it was much longer. I struggled to start the book because the over use of commas was so extreme I couldn’t get into the flow of the prose. Then there were the typos and awkward syntax. There were many cliched phrases and the characters were almost caricatures of the usual couples in this genre. I think the story held a lot of potential but lack of both developmental and copy editing held it back.

Kai really didn’t grow in the story and Alice grew in power and grew in her love for Kai with very little struggle. She would say she missed her family on earth and her friends, but it really wasn’t shown. There was just no development of her internal debate or enough tension to make any change of heart very believable.

The spice was really well written and both characters’ dialogue during the scenes was on point. The end was satisfying.

Overall, this was a fun book with all the elements that people seem to love about the genre, so if someone is looking for good spice and a comfort read of popular tropes without getting too deep in emotion, I think this is a great option.

Great Story

This is a great story, the story line is *chefs kiss* — I only wish I could have a Kai in my life and I love a stubborn, hard headed FMC. However, the typos and grammatical errors just glare at you (incorrect usage of words, a characters name is misspelled, random letters found in a few places, etc) . A little bit more proofreading/editing and this series will easily be a 10/10! Now, excuse me as a go devour book 2 🩷

Relentlessly YA. Immature characters, all of whom said some pretty gross things about women and/or each other. Super conflicting character traits within the same person.

The Demon Prince follows Alice and the chaos that has become her life. Being a witch that's awful at casting spells, wild hair, an arranged marriage to a demon prince, Alice has a lot going on, and yet there can always be more added to it.

I love this author's writing. I've read a couple of their books now and I've been hooked. This one was an enemies to lovers, arranged marriage scenario that plays out really well.

I now know that I need a Kai in my life and I need him now! Kai and Alice are a great pair that don't seem like they should fit together, but actually are perfect. There's also some appearances of other fantasy based characters, such as Peter Pan (who is pretty creepy), that just add the extra fun to the story.

Redundancies destroyed the Book

LIKES
The Premise
The Framework of the World Building

Dislikes
1. The redundancy of the Pan story told three times. Copy and Paste!
2. The redundancy of watcher story told twice. Copy and paste much?
3. The poor editing not catching grammar errors, clunky sentences and words used out of context. Someone had a thesaurus and didn’t actually know how to use it.
4. Heroine getting sexually attacked, but admits to taking liquid viagra in the same seen, and then foreplay.
5. Heroine knowing everything in recollections, but information was not on page.
6. The reasons for being in Hell changing. First it’s for heroine protection, then it’s to save her family and friends.
7. The point that clothes provided to her are too revealing. Then she picks clothing, her own, which are just as revealing. HUH??
8. Author paying money to editors and them not doing their jobs.
9. The glowing 5 Star reviews by people who obviously don’t care about book issues.

I read this book via kindle unlimited.

It felt almost too young. You strip out the steam and it reads like a YA book, not just because she is college aged but he is supposed to be a couple hundred years old. Kai lacks the maturity you would expect in a person with age. The whole book was a bit juvenile, even Lucifer comes off as young and immature. IDK, I liked the book, I liked the story, I liked the world. It was funny. The declaration of love seemed odd and really quick, again adding to that juvenile feel.

Youre not going to get a lot of depth with this one but it did make me giggle a lot, so I'll put the next in series on my TBR list when I need a pick me up. Its definitely not a bad read but again it just lacks a bit of depth and reads young.

Characters: Kai and Alice

The premise is not that bad, but it’s YA imo. I dislike many parts of the dialogue and character building.

It seems as if the author wanted a fierce female MC, but also incorporated the stupid shit from other „mafia boss/millionaire/alpha“ smut and there are parts where his actions are really uncalled for. I was rolling my eyes left and right so many times.

There weren’t any really interesting parts, I just couldn’t care for the storyline or the characters. And the smut was also not even that good. I only give it 2 stars because there are parts where the male MC is super sweet and lovely. I wish the author stuck to that storyline and not play with him being alpha and awful. I won’t read that.

4.2⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. It was super fast paced and kind of “instant” love which I usually hate but I ATE IT UP!

I’m excited for the next book and am intrigued to see Alice’s powers unravel. And can’t wait to see how her and the princes relationship develops 🤤

I thought it was an interesting take on witches, angels, demons, Hell, mythology and even a sprinkle of fairy dust (iykyk). Some details to the storyline felt a little random but it kind of worked out.

And Finn, omg I love his character! He was such a funny side character, I can’t wait to see more of him and his dynamic with Alice and Kai.

Overall, this was a great read.

I have a new book boyfriend and his name is Kai. He’s everything you crave wrapped into one beautiful package; dark and intimidating with a fierce need to protect, but with a soft, funny side that he shows only the FMC. And if that was my thing, she’d be my new book girlfriend. She’s snarky and bada**, but loyal and protective in her own right. Together these two are electric, but the world they live in and they challenges they face are equally as developed as their interactions, and I’m just as invested in the bigger story as I am this couple. And did I mention funny? Let’s just say spiked punch has never been so entertaining. Hands down my favorite book of the year.

Wow this book was incredible. Thank you so much for the ARC it did not disappoint. It had me hooked from the start, I love a good demon/Lucifer story and this was just perfect. It flowed so smoothly and the combination of action to spice was just perfect it was well balanced. I love Kai, another man to add to my boyfriend list. He is everything I can picture him which is fabulous. The connection between him and Alice was just fantastic. The chemistry and sexual tension between them. Dayym. I'm so excited to see where this story goes and what is in store for them

I was so bored I couldn’t take it any longer. The characters and the plot didn’t captivate me and by halfway through the book I didn’t care about any of them. As soon as I picked it up again I was thinking of when I was stopping. Maybe it’s just not my cup of tea?

It started off well until well, it didn’t. Extremely childish, irritating and aggravating “just because” FMC, who behaves more like 16 than 23. They have sexual chemistry but nothing else. At nearly half the book mark, I expected tangible/serious conversations between them, considering what they are to each other but nope, just the immature girl acting out like a kid. I won’t go into the bad grammar, spelling mistakes etc. I’m okay with these normally & tend to ignore, but they were present in this book on every other page which is excessive! Safe to say I won’t be continuing this series.

This was a lighthearted mythology read and I have read hundreds in the past two years. I was a little over the snarky and sassy comments between the two main characters early on. To me it was a bit YA with some serious spice. The authors spice was off the charts and kept me engaged until the end. Although it was a quick read for me……I’m still debating whether I will jump into book 2. I feel this author has a lot of potential for improvement in future books. Pay attention to your reader feedback. I give this one a 3.5.
