A Christmas in Manchester

Rate this book
Miss Evelyn Allen has led a quiet life in Worcestershire all her twenty-one years as the devoted daughter of Pastor Joshua Allen and his wife. She always assumed she’d wed one day since her siblings had all done so, but no man had ever appealed to her in a way that she felt she could look across the breakfast table at him forever.

Until he came into her life…

The Duke of Manchester never expected to be left robbed and bleeding in the road miles from home. He knew his chances of survival were practically nil until an angel driving an old wooden wagon dragged him into her house where she and her mother nursed him back to health.

Even though she knows him for a lord by his manners and clothing, Eve has no idea that the man she is falling in love with is a Duke. A man so far above her she shouldn’t even be speaking with him.

To him, their stations matter not, but can he convince her that she is all he wants for Christmas?

Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

This is a wonderful Christmas read. I love the character’s warmth and love story. The storyline flowed beautifully with you wanting to keep turning the page. There was no sex although of course, it was on our hero’s mind. Our hero was the perfect gentleman and the heroine a wonderful soft hearted and caring woman. This is the perfect read for when you want to relax enjoy a sweet read and be left feeling good. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.

Barbara’s rating: 4 of 5 Stars
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: 11/28/22
Period: Regency

Adam, the Duke of Manchester, was robbed and shot by highwaymen. If it hadn’t been for the angel who came driving by on an old farm wagon, he would have died there on that lonely road. He felt guilty for not telling them who he was – that he was a duke, but he didn’t want to make these lovely people feel uncomfortable around him. It turns out the angel who rescued him and was now nursing him, was the daughter of the Rector for that parish, and her mother had stitched him up. They welcomed him into their home and community as he recuperated.

Miss Evelyn (Eve) Allen is the youngest child of Joshua Allen who is the rector of Trinity Church in their small Worcestershire village. At twenty-one, Eve has led a happy, love-filled life working alongside her parents. All of her brothers and sisters have married and moved on, but Eve has just never met anyone who gave her that special feeling. Several men in the village have tried to court her, but she wants what her parents have – and what her brother and sister have found – love.

One of Eve’s tasks was to distribute food and clothing to the needy in the parish and that sometimes made for a very long day. After one such day, she was headed home, tired and hungry, when she was stopped by a man on the road. He’d been shot and was bleeding. She knew if she didn’t help him, he would die. She, with a bit of his help, managed to get him into the wagon so she could take him home and her mother could remove the bullet and stitch him up. From his clothing and speech, she could tell he was a gentleman – most likely an aristocrat – so she addressed him as My Lord. He didn’t correct her, so she assumed he was a lord of some sort.

This book has one of the sweetest, most romantic male leads you’ll ever read. Was he perfect? No, but that is what makes him so human and relatable. He is a very loving, caring man who meets and falls in love with a woman and then moves heaven and earth to make her his. Now, if you are looking for a steamy read, this isn’t it because he is a very honorable man who respects the woman he loves and is mature enough to control his ‘urges’.

I even learned something from reading the book. Yep, I did. Eve’s father was a Rector of a parish and I almost always see Vicar used instead. So, I wondered at the difference and looked it up. Turns out they are NOT interchangeable. Who knew? The difference is in how they are paid and the different Churches they serve. One is the Church of England (Vicar) and the other is the Anglican Church (Rector).

I enjoyed reading this lovely book and I hope you will as well.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A distinction in class Christmas romance. With heart felt characters, great writing, and holiday cheer gives this beautifully written story the backdrop for an easy read.

Miss Evelyn Allen, youngest of four to Reverend Joshua Allen, loves her family, church, and community. She helps where she can. She also has a dislike for nobility after what happened to her friend.

Adam, Duke of Manchester, wants love not duty for his life and in his wife. He settles for contentment in Lady Ann, but knows it will not be more when he is set upon by highwaymen.

Finding an injured Nan on her way home Miss Eve brings him to her parents to take care of. She knows he is nobility by his dress and speech. Adam does not want to offend them so he doesn't let on he is a duke.

As the two interact they become friends, friendly games of chess help pass during his recovery. Until his mother shows up, then the fun begins.

How was Adam injured? What will he do about both Miss Eve and Lady Ann? What will Miss Eve do to overcome her opinion of nobility? Will she find herself a nice man to marry?

Joint in the holiday celebrations as these to find out if they can be friends, acquaintances or never see each other again. Call ie Hutton gives a magical rendering in this beautifully written story.

I did love the sound of Adam and Eve, and so does Adam, the Duke of Manchester when he knows that the angel saves his life is Eve. Eve is a village lass and a daughter of rector, she loves helping people in need thus when a nobleman, Adam is robbed and shot, she helps him despite her hatred towards noblemen. For me, Eve does look rather elegant driving a wagon.

As Adam is recovering during his stays in Eve’s house, their attraction is undeniable and Adam falls madly in love with Eve. I loved the heroine’s characters. She is compassionate, kind, helpful and clever particularly in chess. She also does all the household chores. At first, I didn’t seem to like the hero, Adam. He looks entirely like a rake but it changed immensely when he will do anything to make Eve his wife despite the status quo and the social stations. Their journey and love in conquering the odds mesmerized me.

Not only is this book about Christmas festivities, it’s also about a fight for the love one. It’s a fast enjoyable reading for holiday, a marvellous story that I felt like being taken into a fairytale throughout reading it. Thank you, Callie Hutton, for this ARC which I voluntarily reviewed.

This is a lovely story by Callie Hutton just in time for the holidays. Adam, the Duke of Manchester is shot, robbed and left for dead by highwaymen, he is rescued by Eve, daughter of the reverend of the village. Adam had been pursued by women all his life and finds Eve a breath of fresh air from the ladies of the Ton. During his recovery they are thrown together a great deal this leads to a discovery of shared interests and feelings develop that could lead to more. Unfortunately Adam’s true identity is discovered when his mother appears at the reverend’s cottage. Determined to marry Eve, Adam must convince his mother that she has what it takes to survive society and become an amazing duchess. With some twists and turns and a bit of heartache along the way the couple eventually reunite and declare their love for one another. I enjoyed this book, it flowed and was easy to read, the characters were charming. A delightful read for the long winter nights. I recommend this book to lovers of romance and happy ever after set in the regency period

I received and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinions and review.

The Duke of Manchester thought he had his life all sorted out and his future settled. Being left for dead on the roadside causes him some anguish until the local vicar's daughter stops to assist him. Suddenly the vacuous, bland young ladies he meets in the ballrooms lose all their appeal as Adam has time to observe Eve and her parents in the vicarage where without any questions asked, they deal with his wounds and allow him to heal. The more time Adam spends with Eve, the more convinced he becomes that she is the woman he needs as a wife. Unfortunately, pragmatic Eve does not agree with Adam in the least, as she knows her limitations and cannot believe that she would ever be accepted in the rarefied world of a Duke. The novel, fortunately, comes to a happy conclusion and will be enjoyed by anyone with a romantic soul, especially if you enjoy a clean and sweet romance. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Adam Aka Duke of Manchester has been robbed and shot left on the road for dead!
Eve the youngest of a Rector father and family finds him and her parents help bring him home!
It is obvious by his speech and clothing he is a Lord but his exact title is unknown for the most part until later!
Eve does not share her name because her friend was seduced by a nobleman she and the baby died so she has every reason to be wary!
Adam is on his way to sign betrothal contracts and is very much regretting even thinking of anyone else!
Eve is very skeptical and tries to forget him and settle for a village lad!
Adam does have a supportive mother and once he convinced her it’s Eve and no other!
Well all bets are off! It will take courage and a tragedy to make Eve see that Adam is her future and she is meant to be his love!
Not just his duchess!

Prep the hot chocolate and curl up in your favorite chair to enjoy this charming, clean Regency Christmas novella.

While rector's daughter Evelyn recognized the man she found bleeding on the road as a lord by his manners and clothing, little did she realize he was actually a duke!

Adam, Duke of Manchester, wakes to find an angel tending to him. As he recuperates, he realizes that he wants to spend the rest of his life with Evelyn.

Adam was firm in his love for Evelyn and willing to surmount any obstacles to make her his wife. Evelyn had doubts about fitting into his life and society, and her mother gives her wise advice.

"Love in marriage can overcome many trials. It's obvious despite your differences, the two of you belong together."

Love conquers all!

A Christmas In Manchester is a splendid historical romance by Callie Hutton. Ms. Hutton provides readers with a well-written story populated with an outstanding cast of characters. Eve found a man in the road on her way home and managed to get him into the wagon and took him home. Adam was shot by highwaymen and left in the road. The family that cares for him only know him as Adam, they have no clue they're housing the Duke of Manchester. Adam and Eve's story is packed with drama, humor and spice. I enjoyed this book and look forward to my next book by Callie Hutton. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.

Eve, the village rector’s daughter, is on her way home when she finds a wounded man in the road. She takes him home and helps care for him. While he recovers, Adam, the Duke of Manchester, he falls in love with the Angel who saved him. They get along well, talk, play chess, and even enjoy an outing or two. Then she discovers that he is a duke. Eve cannot imagine herself in his world. Can Adam convince her that he loves her and that she has the makings of a wonderful duchess? This is a delightful Christmas fairytale. The characters are wonderful and the setting in the village is charming. Adam and Eve’s story has drama, humor, and some Christmas magic. Great Read!

Sweet story about the daughter of a Rector and the man she finds on the side of the road wounded. He keeps his identity of being a Duke from her. You understand his reasons, but when she discovers the truth, it doesn't go well.

I have two disappointments I wanted info on. What happened to the lawsuit? There was such a buildup up of how bad would she falter being a Duchess. We were told this in a sentence, I wanted to experience it.

Both main character's were perfect and I enjoyed their interactions. Passionate kisses and one little touchy feely.

Story had romance that build slowly, HEA, some sadness, no cheating, no cliffhanger, enjoyable epilogue 3 years in the future. Ended at 92% mark on my e-reader rest teaser for another story. (ljb)

I didnt like the hero.He behaved like a manchild and the love was unconvincing.
I felt like he just browbeat her into marrying him.
It was easy for him to say that they will overcome their class differences when she was the one making all the efforts to fit in.
One time when she needed his support the most,he wasnt there.(Her parents were sick and she had to go back)
He thought it was her rejecting him and giving up on them(aftereffects of this scene was him behaving like a petulant child , throwing tantrum for not getting what he wanted), although he realised his mistake later,I hated him more after that.

I loved reading Adam and Eve's story of love across a class divide between a vicar's daughter and a Duke. Eve rescues Adam on the road home hurt from a gunshot wound. After nursing him back to health Adam invites her into his world a world vastly different from her world of looking out for the needy, of working class poverty and charitable deeds to a world of opulence and money. Will the first stirrings of love and attraction survive the class difference.

A Christmas in Manchester By Callie Hutton

Five stars, Eve was a pastor daughter, Adam a Duke.. A clash of the classes, upper vs lower.. But Adam was determined to make Eve is wife, his mother opposed the match.. Eve didn't think it would work, but love prevails. Really good ending.

"Semplice. Si era innamorato di lei.

Quel pensiero lo scosse come nient’altro in tutta la sua vita. Aveva passato gli ultimi dieci anni a evitare un’avida femmina dopo l’altra, pensando che non ci fosse nessuno che potesse amare e che l’avrebbe amato a sua volta, dimostrando che un amore del genere poteva esistere nel suo mondo.

Fino a quel momento."

An enjoyable story about a Duke falling in love with a village Rector's daughter and persuading her to marry him and become his Duchess.
Whilst he is recovering from a gunshot wound at the Rector's house, the Duke learns that even though the villagers are poor, they still manage to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and help each other.
This is a pleasant story to read on a rainy afternoon. As usual with Callie Hutton's books, it is well written with likeable characters.
