We all have wounds. We all experience the emotional suffering that arises when we're prevented from receiving or giving love as we were created to. As we orchestrate our lives to hide our wounds and avoid the discomfort of having them irritated, we end up creating anxiety, unhappiness, exhaustion, anger, and a sense of meaninglessness. The good news is that God wants to heal us!
In Finding Freedom in Healing Life's Hurts, Dr. Matthew Breuninger examines the nature and causes of our wounds. Finding Freedom in Christ outlines a six-step model to help readers identify and remove the barriers to God's healing grace—making deeper conversion possible. Ultimately, the goal of this healing model is to free individuals to love and serve God and one another.
Good book. I enjoyed the prayers & reflection questions. Easy to access for anyone.
My only hold up is only going to be relevant to some people- those who have been through IFS therapy. Some of the wording about “clearing away” bad aspects of ourselves were off putting to me but I was able to see the overarching point (we have to acknowledge bad behaviors and the ways we contribute to our own pain in life) and think about it from a more parts-accepting perspective (without excusing the maladaptive behaviors) and got much out of it.
I really enjoyed the reflection on how the Eucharist heals our memories.
Well written, short book on healing our own wounds, wounds we’ve caused in others, and combatting the self-preservation techniques that cause us to further wound ourselves.
It is written for an audience who will treat it as a workbook and do all the exercises. But if you aren’t up for the exercises, the first 6 chapters are still great. They give a great framework for why we continue to be wounded and how to respond.
Dr. Breuninger’s Christocentric approach to psychology is excellent and much needed in our world. I always thoroughly enjoy the PWA podcasts he appears in, so I’m glad to have a book outlining his thought.
Great book that gives very practical advise and steps on how to allow the Holy Spirit to identify the wounds, hurts, unforgiveness and lies that keep us “protecting ourselves” yet keep us from surrendering to God’s healing grace. A good complement to Dr Bob Schultz book “be healed”.
