Growing up, it was only Gretchen and her mother, and their closeness strengthened an unbreakable bond. But after Gretchen’s mother tragically passes, she learns of the family her mother left behind at Redwood Ranch. Desperate to learn more about her mother’s past, Gretchen visits her estranged family only to discover the harsh truth of why her mother left in the first place.
Gretchen Hanover's mother passed away and leaves her a ranch that she didn't even know existed. Her mother kept secrets from her about the family and the ranch. Gretchen is visited by a man (Leo) who tells her that she has inherited an estate but she doesn't believe him as she knows nothing of any family estate. But then she finds out that she is the owner of property and a ranch which makes her wonder why her mother never let her be aware of a family that she didn't even know existed. What kind of skeletons were hiding in the family closet?
Thoughts:
Most of this book was wrapped within a mystery of the family that Gretchen never knew she had and it was all about her getting acquainted with them all as she learned how to take care of the ranch since she is the new owner.
The book was not scary and though it is titled as a haunting there wasn't much in the way of "haunting" throughout the whole book.
There is a small haunting but it is not a major part of the book as the title leads you to believe which the haunting doesn't happen till after the 50% mark. I kept thinking that something was going to happen with a haunting up to the halfway point but nothing occurs till later on in the book. It seems the reviews are quite good for this book and I am in the small minority on this story. Giving this book two "Mystery But Hardly Any Spooks" stars!
Another formula book: a young, attractive, single woman inherits an estate from a grandmother she never knew about. It comes with a family she grew up not knowing. It is haunted. End of story.
This was a fun read. Gretchen learns her mother's family owns a large ranch. She meets Leo, the ranch manager, when he comes to get her after her grandma passes. Gretchen feels the warmth of the people at the ranch and is completely taken by the beauty and life style. She quickly comes to the conclusion her grandmother's death was murder and decides to look into it. Another pass at editing would have given the story a 5 star rating. There were typos, name changes, and continuity issues, mostly in the second half of the book.
A good plot; but I had it figured out, early in the story. I’d say the characters are what drove the 3 star rating. I was disappointed in the amount of scene settings, or lack there of. What really troubled me, is that no one ever ate; or seemed to have the time for it. What you get for the story is just the highlights of their everyday. I think the story could have been so much more richer if the author filled in the details.
Story started off very well but then the story started to fall apart. Main character’s friend goes from a supportive friend to a wild slut in a matter of hours. Main character wasn’t any better spending most of her time following a guy around drooling. Poor editing leaves you felling as if half the story is missing. Very disappointing
Life is built on losses and gains, good and evil. This story brings these elements of life into full action. Mystery and murder sparked by greed for money and power create a dramatic story, complete with spirits. Enjoy.
I don't read my books but listen to them with text to speech on my kindle. This book was fun to listen to, kept me engaged the whole book listened to in one set. It's got lot of great characters
I truly enjoyed reading this book. You could feel the emotions of the characters. The ending was as great as the rest of the book. This book would be great for people to read.
This story based out of Colorado was a real treat. Having grown .up there I remember the dude ranches and redwood fell in that category. Thank you for bringing back some sweet memories. Sincerely christinedunne Harlingen Texas
Ehh. It had a good story line, but the back and forth changing of the mind by Gretchen kinda gave me whiplash. One minute she was confused, next minute she’s angry, and then boom! She’s confused again. She trust this person then not, then she blinks, and she trust them again.
