This was such a cute slice of life manga! The art style has something very vintage and nostalgic to it -- besides that, it's just absolutely stunning, especially the silent panels showing the small tidbits of the character's life. Also the recipes... Oh my gosh, the FOOD it all looks so good. Would highly recommend!

This delightful manga is titled "Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san" or translated as "The Caterer at the Maiko Manor". It is a story of two childhood friends, one is the eponymous caterer or cook, and the other is a promising maiko (apprentice geisha).
It's a delightful series, wonderfully crafted in both story and art. As much as it is a slice of life set in the heart of geisha district in Kyoto, it's a memoir of comfort food for the author relating each recipe to a personal memory. It's a calming and relaxing read.

Hangatnya persahabatan Kiyo dan Suu juga Kenta, pesona perjuangan para maiko yang masih berusia SMA itu, juga sikap Kiyo dalam menghadapi kegagalan, semuanya kayak teh hangat yang bikin nyaman. Jadi, Kiyo dan Suu jauh-jauh dari kampung ke Kyoto bercita-cita menjadi maiko, tapi setelah dilatih, hanya Suu yang diterima dan Kiyo tidak.

Kiyo, yang di kampung terbiasa memasak bersama Nenek, ternyata bisa menunjukkan kebolehannya itu di tempat di mana cita-citanya kandas. Seperti apa ya rasanya, punya keinginan melakukan sesuatu, tapi ditolak, tapi malah bisa melakukan hal lain yang dikuasai. Lalu, ada orang yang mengingatkan "Wah kamu 'kan gagal blablabla ya!" Kalau aku yang jadi Kiyo, mungkin yang ngomong sudah ta' adon jadi mochi~ ( 〃▽〃) //jahat //anakbaikjanganmeniru //tiruKiyosaja.
Banyak sekali digambarkan kebiasaan para maiko, terutama kehidupan sehari-hari alias pemandangan di belakang 'panggung': mulai dari cara mereka tidur, makan, sampai jam-jam latihan yang menyiksa~
Lalu, fokus utama adalah keseharian Kiyo dan masakannya ❤ wujud dukungannya untuk Suu dan maiko lainnya. Ambisi Suu menjadi maiko dan kesungguhannya dalam berlatih diimbangi dengan 'ambisi' Kiyo untuk menghidangkan makanan terbaik, yang disesuaikan dengan kondisi yang sedang dihadapi.
Diceritakan juga kilas balik ketiga sahabat ini sewaktu di kampung...

Setelah Kiyo dan Suu pergi ke Kyoto, Kenta-lah yang datang ke rumah Kiyo dan menolong Nenek menyerok salju. Suka sekali dengan penggambaran sifat anak ini, yang selalu ada tanpa menyolok, sigap membantu tanpa menonjolkan diri.
Akhir kata, sama seperti saat membaca Maruta－walau dengan alasan-alasan yang tidak persis sama－aku berharap komik ini panjang umur alias masih lama tamatnya~ ( ^ω^)旦~~ nikmat~!

A cute manga about a girl named Kiyo who is the cook for a troupe/Geisha house.
We see her make delicious meals everyday, sometimes having to hurry or change her pacing as the manor is quite chaotic at times (schedules always changing).
I did feel sorry for Kiyo, she originally came to the manor to become a maiko, but instead she was expelled because she was terrible at it. Now she is the cook. Making breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks for the girls living in the manor. She still clings to hope that she will become a maiko one day, but given the conversation we saw with Mother, it seems she will never get a new chance. :( And that makes me quite sad, since I do want her to get another chance. Then again, she seems pretty happy at her current place, but I want her to grow further.
The manga is really fun though, and even with my stomach in turmoil I still got hungry from the nommie food that Kiyo is making. Mmm! I love that there are also recipes/real life pictures of food.
I also like that we are getting some backstory on Kiyo (how she got in Kyoto, why she wants to become a Maiko, how she became the cook). I do have some questions, does this girl not need to go to school? She is 16 years old. Then again, other people also comment on it. But other than that nothing happens with it.
Hopefully next time we see a bit more of the Geisha/Maiko girls. I do love the cooking, but I also am curious about the girls in the house (and also Mother).
The art was also pretty lovely (especially the Maiko/Geisha girls). Sometimes I just couldn't take my eyes off the pages, they were that pretty.
Yep, I will definitely keep on reading this series, and I would recommend it.

Komik ringan ini mengambil latar belakang kehidupan maiko atau calon geiko (lebih dikenal sebagai geisha) di kota tua Kyoto. Di balik sebuah wisma tempat tinggal para maiko ada seorang gadis muda berusia 16 tahun bernama Kiyo, yang tadinya menjalani pelatihan untuk menjadi maiko tapi gagal karena dinilai tidak berbakat. Ternyata Kiyo memiliki bakat lain dan menemukan tempatnya sebagai juru masak di wisma yang mendukung kehidupan dan pekerjaan para maiko dengan memasak berbagai hidangan lezat untuk mereka setiap hari.
Jenis komik ini adalah slice-of-life yang menghadirkan sekelumit kisah sehari-hari dalam bab-bab pendek. Panjangnya kira-kira hanya 10 halaman per bab sehingga setiap jilid komik ini memang terasa tipis. Tidak seperti manga lain tentang masak-memasak yang pernah saya baca, misalnya Yokohama Chinatown Fantasy yang menyertakan resep masakan di setiap akhir bab, komik ini tidak begitu dalam membahas tentang masakan dan hanya menyebutkan sedikit anekdot dari kehidupan pribadi sang komikus tentang hidangan yang dibahas tiap babnya.
Perkembangan plot komik ini terasa lambat karena sifatnya sebagai kisah slice-of-life yang berfokus pada kehidupan sehari-hari tanpa konflik besar atau arah tertentu yang menjadi tujuan cerita. Terlebih lagi komik ini juga sering kali mundur ke belakang untuk menceritakan kehidupan Kiyo dan sahabatnya sejak kecil, Sumire (Suu), di daerah asal mereka di Aomori sebelum keduanya pergi merantau ke Kyoto untuk berlatih menjadi maiko. Saking lambatnya plot, ringkasan cerita di sampul belakang jilid ke-2 sampai ke-5 terjemahan Indonesia komik ini terus-menerus menyebutkan hal yang sama: Kiyo gagal menjadi maiko tapi beralih jadi juru masak, sementara Sumire menapaki jalan sebagai maiko. Penambahan karakter baru yang menambah konflik pun sangat jarang terjadi. Baru di jilid ke-6 (jilid terbaru yang saya baca) ada karakter calon maiko baru yang meramaikan suasana.
Komik ringan dan singkat tentang makanan seperti ini tentunya tidak akan membahas topik yang terlalu berat, tapi ini menimbulkan kesenjangan antara hal-hal yang disebutkan dan yang tidak. Saya tahu bahwa, tidak seperti anggapan sebagian orang, maiko dan geiko/geisha lebih merupakan seniman pertunjukan tari dan musik, dan tidak sama dengan prostitusi. Namun, tetap saja profesi ini terasa paling tidak menyerempet atau mendekati prostitusi karena kliennya sebagian besar pria yang lebih tua yang berperan sebagai 'patron' mereka. Sempat disebutkan bahwa di distrik puspa tempat kerja maiko dan geiko dilarang keras memasak masakan seperti kare Jepang yang aromanya mengingatkan pria tentang rumah. Kenapa begitu, hayo? Cobalah kita pikirkan dengan kritis. 👀
Yang juga mengganjal dalam komik ini adalah fakta bahwa para kandidat maiko merupakan anak perempuan di bawah umur yang baru lulus SMP. Mereka pada dasarnya putus sekolah dan menjalani pelatihan penuh waktu setiap hari untuk kemudian bekerja sebagai maiko, dengan klien yaitu bapak-bapak lebih tua yang disebutkan tadi. Selain mempertunjukkan tarian untuk menghibur tamu, salah satu bagian pekerjaan maiko adalah menyajikan minuman beralkohol kepada tamu meskipun mereka sendiri masih di bawah umur. Saya bertanya-tanya ada atau tidakkah hukum tenaga kerja anak di Jepang yang mengatur hal ini.
Terlepas dari aspek yang patut dipertanyakan, komik ini berfokus pada hubungan antar manusia terutama persahabatan antara Kiyo dan Sumire. Meskipun Sumire berhasil menjadi maiko dengan nama resmi Momohana sementara Kiyo yang tidak lolos pelatihan beralih menjadi juru masak di wisma, hubungan mereka tetap erat. Kiyo mendukung Sumire dan penghuni wisma lainnya dengan memasak hidangan yang memberi mereka semangat di tengah keseharian yang melelahkan, dan menjadi penyokong yang penting di belakang panggung para maiko. Makanan juga menjadi jembatan nostalgia yang mengingatkan Kiyo dan Sumire tentang kampung halaman. Kehangatan persahabatan dan kebersamaan para penghuni wisma yang tersampaikan melalui makanan, minuman dan camilan lezat menjadi pesona tersendiri dari komik ini.

I saw the anime adaptation of this manga first and later found out there was a live action adaptation that I devoured in 2 sittings. I absolutely adore this series. So is it any wonder that I am reading the manga? I am currently reading the scanslations and am so happy to learn there are 20+ volumes!! Looking forward to see how Suu-chan and Kiyo-chan go about living their dreams.

Finally got to the end! The ending is sooooo sweet, and understated; much like the entirety of the series itself!

I heard that this manga was really good, and I really didn't understand it at the time, but now I do. Reading this series, is just like receiving a lovely comforting hug with your favourite food and a warm drink right next to you.
Featuring food (from across all regions of Japan, but primarily Kyoto and Aomori), reading this often made me super hungry (it was dangerous doing so on an empty stomach!). Interspersed between some lovingly depicted meals, is a rather intimate look behind the scenes on what it takes to be a maiko - spoilers, it's about the dancing lessons, the need to be and look elegant and graceful, the layers of kimono that they must wear, the amount of work and dedication needed to do their hair (and maintain it!)... it's a lot. And all this beginning from when they are 16 - the age when most children are still trying to figure out what it is they want to do in the future (and in Japan, it's when they're about the enter high school).
I loved the first few volumes, but I am absolutely loving seeing Kenta (the lone boy in this trio including Sumire, our resident maiko, and Kiyo, our heroine) come to the fore a bit more.
It's a fascinating and comforting read. It's definitely one that I've enjoyed immensely.

Depuis quelques temps, j'aime bien papillonner ça et là entre les tranche-de-vie seinen ou josei, ces mangas réalistes qui s'intéressent à des aspects sociaux ou culturels de personnages japonais ou coréen. Ils ont quelque chose de léger et d'accessible qui fait du bien, et qui donne un autre visage aux pays asiatiques. Dans cette optique, je suis tombée sur ce premier tome d'une série avec comme sujets la cuisine et l'univers clos des geishas, plus précisément les "Maïkos", des appentis-geisha de la région de Kyoto, dans un cadre contemporain.
Kiyo est entrée dans une école formant des geisha avec sa meilleure amie, dans l'intention de devenir maïkos. Ce sont des artistes polyvalentes dont la maitrise de multiples arts traditionnels japonais se fait sur de longues années. Les apprentis vivent dans une "okiya", une maison géré par une "mère" ( une geisha d'expérience) où elles vivent en groupe et dont tous les espaces sont collectifs. Dans la petite okiya où Kiyo et son amie Su vivent, la cuisinière vient de se blesser davantage au dos, ne pouvant plus, dès lors, s'occuper des repas. Lasse et dégoutées des bentos de dépanneurs/supérette, Kiyo se propose alors de prendre en charge les repas et ce, d'autant plus qu'elle s'apprêtait à rentrer chez elle. On lui a en effet fait savoir qu'elle n'avait pas ce qu'il fallait pour être maïko...En revanche, elle a de bonnes bases en cuisine.
Nous suivons Kiyo dans son train-train culinaire dans la maisonnée. Entre deux recettes, nous en apprenons sur ses origines, mais on se heurte aussi à ses petits tracas domestiques. Kiyo n'a que 16 ans, elle devrait donc être en classe. Ce simple élément est un enjeu en lui-même, notamment quand un policier la prend pour une fugueuse, alors qu'elle ne faisait que son épicerie.
Kiyo et les autres personnages féminins ont de petits corps, des têtes très rondes et une bouille enfantine. Je trouvais qu'avec un graphisme aussi "mignon" et un sujet aussi féminin que ce manga soit classé "shonen", je le trouve beaucoup plus "shojo". La vie dans l'okiya est paisible, bon-enfant, il n'est pas question de rivalités intestines, de jalousies ou de chamailleries, ce qui en soit est très apprécié: C'est désolant la surreprésentation de la mésentente féminine, c'est donc bien d'en avoir des positives de temps en temps. Il faut aussi dire qu'une okiya est une maison "familiale", on y vit ensemble. Les jeunes femmes sont donc aussi des "soeurs", en un sens.
Bien sur, on en apprend sur le monde mystérieux des geishas. C'est la première fois que j'en croise dans un manga à l'époque contemporaine, mais j'en ai entendu parlé dans l'un des livres de la collection "Mon Histoire" de la maison Gallimard, intitulé "Maïko: Journal d'une apprenti-geisha". Les deux livres ont des éléments communs. On y parle des vêtements, on y parle de ces drôles d'oreillers très minces sur lesquels les maïkos dorment pour ne pas défaire leur coiffure ( qui est longue à faire et peut durer une semaine si on est prudente), on y parle des okiyas et de leur aspect familial. Dans les deux cas, être maïko, devenir geisha, est une vocation.
J'ai bien hâte d'en apprendre plus dans cette série, qui est une vraie petite douceur, rempli de superbes kimonos, de plats à l'apparence succulente et de péripéties du quotidien.
Pour un lectorat adolescent du premier cycle secondaire, 12-15 ans+ **Mais les 10-12 du lectorat intermédiaire qui s'y intéresseront pourraient très bien le lire aussi.

Since by the cruelty of the gods it was never officially translated, I had to Sail the Seven Seas for a fan translation. In my restless dreams, besides being translated, they come out with two big physical compilation volumes (it ran for 29 volumes) or a full kindle edition. Alas.
But my broken heart aside: this is the one ❤️ I actually reached this adaptation last (having seen the Netflix series and anime first), and it was like saving room for dessert.
The manga gives you EVERYTING: information on maiko hairstyles, their schedules, how the entire community works (at least in Gion Kobu), how they eat (it needs to be small bites to not mess up their lipstick, no garlic allowed, etc). Those are the kind of details that make my hyperfocus heart SOAR. And I think a very clever aspect of the manga is that they never show a night of them entertaining customers; which makes total sense as a big aspect about the geisha arts is client privacy. So you get the glimpse of their training and mornings, but very little of their nights.
The manga, of course, also gets the chance to really delve into the relationships between the characters. It reminds of Persona 4 in the way it encourages lessons about pivoting with your dreams, but also finding fulfillment in the small crevices we can carve out for ourselves. I cried so much reading it (considering it's a very low stakes, low drama manga).
If you really want to learn so much more about maiko and geisha, especially those little details that a lot of books might overlook for being superfluous (not to me!!) I definitely 100% recommend going for it, even if getting to it is a little harder than the first two adaptations. PLEASE I AM BEGGING FOR A TRANSLATED RELEASE.

Awalnya sebenarnya tidak tertarik sama sekali, hingga tergugah banyak yang ngereview keren ceritanya. Bahkan ketika mau ambil masih ragu karena tertulis girl comics. Akhirnya icip satu vol.

Juru Masak Para Maiko lebih ke komik ringan yang memberikan kehangatan kepada pembacanya. Cerita tentang upaya mewujudkan cita-cita menjadi maiko tetapi nasib berkata lain. Membuat Kiyo, si MC harus menjadi tukang masak para maiko.
Masih banyak misteri yanga perlu di perjelas sambil berjalnnya cerita. Misalnya, apakah Kiyo akan kembali berusaha mewujudkan cita-citanya menjadi maiko atau yang lain? mari kita tengok bersama nanti.
Komik ini selain menghangatkan, juga lebih menonjolkan ke sisi masakan. (coba gambar makanannya berwarna, mungkin menjadi lebih menarik lagi hahaha...) Oh ya, jujur setelah membaca vol satu dan lihat artstyle nya menurutku malah cenderung shonen loh. tidak ada bunga-bunga berkilauan dengan panel acak khas komik cewek.

Quel bonheur d'explorer Kyoto et le monde très secret du quotidien des maikos d'aujourd'hui, avec toute la gestion de la foule de leur quartier extrêmement visité, des technologies présentes autour d'eux, de la tentante nourriture du konbini parfois, qui se mêle à ce mode de vie hors du temps. Il y a de magnifiques dessins de Kyoto, ce qui vient personnellement m'interpeler bien sûr, mais j'ai aussi adoré ces petites touches d'attachement entre les deux amies dont l'une ne suit pas le parcours rêvé, mais qui semble avoir fait la paix et avoir trouvé son propre chemin. Un récit précieux!
Ce sont des petites histoires adorables, qui nous font du bien et qui mettent en appétit! Car les mets de Kiyo sont si bien décrits, avec la beauté de la gastronomie japonaise, mais aussi le goût tout particulier de Kyoto... Ah nostalgie!

Una lectura simple y cálida. Siempre me han gustado los mangas que se relacionen con la comida, y este me llamó la atención dado a que está relacionado con la cultura de Geishas. La historia es acerca de una "fracasada" aprendiz de geisha que termina siendo la cocinera, su mejor amiga sin embargo ha logrado graduarse como una de las mejores así que puedes ver el contraste y la unión de ambos mundos gracias a la comida.
El detalle de los alimentos es muy lindo, bastante apegado a la realidad. Es interesante incluso ver el proceso creativo de cómo se logra cada capítulo relacionarse con el menú, por lo que se puede devorar el primer volumen rápidamente.
Recomiendo mucho este título con una buena taza de café o té, unas galletas y relajarse después de un día de trabajo.

Pertama kali lihat cover komik ini langsung mikir wah pasti banyak menu makanan yang dibikin nih, dan ternyata setiap chapter selalu ada gambar menu yang disajiin sama si Kiyo.
Kiyo merupakan juru masak pengganti Bibi yang biasanya masakin maiko di Wisma Maiko punya Bu Micchan. Latar belakang dia diceritain secata apik lewat chapternya gimana ceritanya dia jadi juru masak untuk para maiko. Untuk anak usia 16 tahun, menurutku Kiyo cukup ceria dan tegar. Selain itu dia juga menikmati saat-saat masak banget. Salah satu komik slice-of-life yang menenangkan.

Reviewing Volumes 1-29
Maiko-san chi no Makanai-san: One of the few manga series I wish never ended. I simply could not let any of the characters go.
Just as the characters in the story continue to come back to the Maiko household for the love and comfort of Kiyo’s cooking, I forsee myself coming back to the filling and warm story of this manga for years to come.
I hope this can be translated into other languages in the future, so that people can find a manga as earnest and kind as this is.

even tho i'm still continuing this it's so good T_____T
the food drawn here looks incredible and i especially love love the dynamics between kenta, sumire and kiyo!! i like how they handle the love triangle between the three of them because it doesn't seem overly dramatic at all. its also really interesting to see more about maikos and what they do!
definitely recommend if you want to read a slice of life manga about food 👍

Nominated for Best Shonen Manga at 65th Shogakukan Manga Awards this year, one of the best mangas which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday.
I love how this manga took the story where was set in Kyoto’s hanamachi geisha quarter. I felt like I was reading another Memoirs of a Geisha story, but this one was so cute and fun.

Premis yang unik, khas banget mungkin cuma ada di komik ini. Suka sama gaya gambarnya, vibesnya, alur ceritanya, makanan di dalamnya (pastinya), dan karakter tokoh utamanya ngasih ketenangan banget, suka semua deh aku, hihi. Paket lengkap yang cocok dibaca sama siapa pun, bikin rileks dan damai. Pokoknya wajib coba baca deh!

Very nice slice-of-life manga. I was curious about this version since I am currently watching the tv series, which is very loyal to the source. The opening sequence of the manga was stunning, with the maikos, so pretty.

the art is lovely and the meals look great, but some (if not all) of the other things are rubbing me the wrong way.(I read this immediately after having a bad nap… so maybe that’s why I’m so cranky about it…maybe)

A first volume that I really liked: very beautiful drawings, the evocation of Kyoto, one of the most beautiful cities in Japan according to me, the little dishes prepared by Kiyo all look absolutely delicious and make your mouth water.
A series that I will continue to read with pleasure. I just hope to learn more about the training to become a Maiko.
