"It is more than probable that I am not understood; but I fear, indeed, that it is in no manner possible to convey to the mind of the merely general reader, an adequate idea of that nervous intensity of interest with which, in my case, the powers of meditation (not to speak technically) busied and buried themselves, in the contemplation of even the most ordinary objects of the universe." - Edagr A. Poe

I live with my two cats and Husband of three years. I love to travel, ride horses, write, read, draw, drink wine, cook, each chocolate, and design. Never figured I'd become a writer but did, and no matter the day it's always good because of it. My somewhat unhealthy facination with the idea that we all die adds an oddly sweet twist to my love stories. Ever since I was old enough to understand this, I haven't been able to stop thinking of it, and what happens after. To me, I don't want to lose the love I've built in this life... Writing books ensure that this will never happen.

I was so offended by this book, I can't even...well, I can actually articulate it but seriously?

Okay, let's begin this as we usually begin reviews, or rather as I do. By talking about the characters. In this instance, there are very few characters that can be talked about. Estella, Edgar, Estella foster mom, Scott and his diminutive girlfriend and the nurse that I can't for the life of me remember the name of.

I have read a lot of books in my life, some I have loved and others I have hated. This might be one of the worst books I have had the misfortune to come across. We meet Estella as she gets ready to leave her foster mom's home for college where she's going work for her masters (more on that later). Oh no, before that we have a lengthy prologue which basically tells us the story we are going to be reading except it makes it all the more pathos and attempts to make it divine (it fails). Now, there is a LOT of telling and not showing in this book. Estella says something to the effect of "I'm the perfume of life." I would have laughed but I was too busy trying not to gag.

And then, there's Edgar. Um... he's a professor, who looks young but is not. DOESN'T ANYONE ELSE THINK IT'S CREEPY? That a professor is asking a seventeen year old to "date?" (That's the word, date.) Like...EW. I mean, I dunno about you guys but when you say professor, I think crusty, bookish men, not to even go near how wrong it is to have (and condone) that kind of relationship between a teacher and a student. It doesn't make it right if the prof is hot. Wrong is wrong, damnit.

Then there is Scott. He's madly in love (or so it seems, about one minute after he meets Estella) with Estella until she "finds" him a girl and he falls for her at speed of a bullet. Their characters could have been cut from cardboard, that's how interesting they were. There's NO character development, nothing of any originality - yeah, it is a blatant rip-off from Twilight but it's not a good one.

And Estella? Okay, whenever a character says that it has been days "since I last took a shower," I am grossed out. No matter how clean you may be supernaturally being the perfume of life and all, TAKE A DAMN SHOWER or don't talk about it at all. And what's up with her not eating? It seemed like she was existing on muffins for days.

But my biggest peeve with the book? I don't know if the author has ever taken classes at a university level or tried for a masters but if I were to judge based solely on what I've been given in the book, the answer would be a solid no. It's hard work. And Estella goes to class, doesn't take notes, doesn't do anything even remotely resembling schoolwork and she's there for her masters? She reads a book, a book that apparently has no name and is just an accessory to showcase her "intelligence" (which I am doubting). The classwork seems to be more suited to middle-grade (if not elementary) than to adults working for a masters in Environmental Science.

There are so many things wrong with this book that one wonders what the publishers were thinking. I can't help but be offended by the sheer absurdity of it. Do they think, that as consumers, we will swallow down anything? Do they really think readers, even YA readers who suspend their expectations at a certain level and accept a mutable reality, will scoff at this.

I thought Bella would reign queen as TSTL heroine. I think Estella (recognize the similarity?) just crowned herself as the new queen.

Okay so.... I read the first edition, granted. But there were WAY too many errors for this to have even been published. Sentences were lacking punctuation, words, and direction. The story was hard to read this way. Also, Edgar came off to me as a gay abusive father rather than a soul mate. He treated her like a kid the whole time. She did act childish at times, but mostly she acted stupid and bipolar. I grew tired of the constantly changing emotions between both characters. For example, her friends Scott and Sarah. She really missed them when Edgar had her locked away in the house for her own "good" and she really wanted to talk to them. Yet she doesn't care AT ALL when Edgar tells her he made them think she hated them so they wouldn't go looking for her????

Ridiculous characters, terrible writing, lack of true purpose, and terrible editing rolled into one.

Wow.

Now, I am not usually one to DNF a book. Specially only 59 pages in, but this was the exception. For many reasons.

Lets start with our main character, Estella. Now, I am one who will crack some self-deprecating jokes every now and then because that's how I cope, but miss girl.... EVERY PARAGRAPH?? I get it. You don't have a soul. You are void of feeling. You never cry. There is a darkness inside you along with your cold heart. Thank you. We get it. This was one of the main reasons I could not finish this book. The constant negativity from the main character made the story not seem important. Which brings me to my other point...

The story?? Is she in the room with us?? Now, when I read a book I need it to capture my attention so that I am always wanting to read to more to find out what happens next, to figure out what is going to happen and dive more into the plot and learn more about the characters. But I got nothing with this. I felt like I had to force myself to pick up the book. I wasn't drawn to know more. Yeah I had questions, but they were more about what the heck was going on.

So yeah, I DNFd it. Sue me. 59 pages in and I couldn't do it anymore. I had tried for a 2 weeks, and hadn't gotten further. May she rest in peace.

First of all let me say that I was lucky enough to win this book on a Goodreads giveaway, but it wasn't just any copy. It was signed and personalized by the author, Abra Ebner, herself. It arrived in my mailbox the day before my birthday, and I couldn't have been more thrilled. It was a perfect birthday present surprise.
I had read some of the other reviews that compared it to Twilight(minus the vampires), so I was definitely curious. I had enjoyed Twilight, but ended up disappointed in the series as a whole. From the haunting cover art which Ebner designed herself, to the beginning pages with Poe's "The Raven" onto the preface I became completely hooked. This was different--special. It all worked for me right away.
I connect with books on different levels, but what I am always searching for is the trifecta: a good, interesting story, characters I can believe in and the author's voice that manages to resonate within me. What I mean by that is getting a feeling about the person as an author, and what their point of view is. I can liken that sort of trifecta to J.K. Rowling, and here with Ebner.
Everything about this novel was genuine for me. I believed that the characters were true to who I thought they were from the beginning. It also had interesting supporting ideas that I thought were out of the box and innovative. It is a story that I will carry with me, and one that made me want to talk about and discuss with others. I thought it was a perfect mixture of heart and intelligence.

This book had the making of an incredible series. The concept/storyline was both fascinating and exciting. It is the story of creation, jealousy, love and betrayal set throughout time. The story was captivating. However, the writer's execution was sometimes tedious and dragged down with meaningless minutia. While I really did enjoy it, I put it down from time to time because I was bored with the writer's inability to concisely put down her ideas in fewer pages and words. I am in the process of reading the second book; so, I hope it will be better. Although I gave the book four stars, I really believe it was a 3 1/2.

This story is perfect for those who love adventure, lost love, mystery, suspense and angels. You can't help but feel sorry for the heroine who's empty inside, forgotten her past and unable to feel -- wanting to heal her heart. And then add in a hero you aren't sure you can trust! Abra puts you into a world of beauty with her vivid descriptions of the powers of her characters and their surroundings. The end leaves you wanting more!

The premiss of the story was good and had the makings for a really good book.
I just felt as though the relationships were rushed. That was my biggest complaint with the book - just too rushed, not enough development or at least believable development.
The book ended on a sad note and I am hoping for a 'happily ever after' for the characters - isn't that what every girl wants? :o)

This book started out with a lot more potential than it lived up to. The main character was very intriguing. But about half way through the book, she started to get a bit boring. And while I understand that it was written as part of a series, I don't think that is an excuse to introduce elements that never get explained. It's also not an excuse to have a bad ending.

I don't know what it is, but I can't freaking stand this book. I hate the writing. I hate that the occurrence in the story are almost word for word twilight. Get a little creative please. I can't read the same story again. So made it to page 115 and I can't take another word of it.

I only have this 2 stars because it’s my friend’s favorite series. Or used to be. But it’s awful. I don’t know how to tell her. lol
It felt like folklore or a tall tale one would tell around a fire about the origin and purpose of ravens or something. And this author decided she would try to write a book about it but forgot to add any details or tidbits that made any sense. Except, it must be magic.
Beyond the horrible writing and god awful story building; the MMC is clearly a piece of garbage. Red Flag after red flag from the get go. So much so that I never actually thought he was a legit love interest. I just thought he would end up being a villain tricking her. I was wrong.
Other people have really great reviews in here that are detailed. One person said the MMC is like an abusive, gay, controlling, step dad. And that was spot on. 😆 I’m tired of writing about this terrible book now. Bye.

I originally read this book several years ago and enjoyed it but this time it was very difficult to get through. Very twilight (girl can’t live without boy and justifies absurd “protective” instincts)

It has ok premise. I know professor student relationship are ok in many places around the world under given conditions. So for me the writing issues of the book felt a bit more prominent. But in the end, to look at the good points, it had the character stakes and wants built in a good way.

I thought that this book would be a gothic version of Twlight, but was sadly mistaken. This book pales in comparisson to the work Stephenie Meyer has done. In fact, I found this book this book very unlikable. I didn't not like this book because of its lack of similarities to Twlight, but the way this book and the characters were written. To Twlight fans, there is a slight similarity to Twlight because Edgar is young looking but actually really old, like Edward, but in no way does this hold a candle to Twlight and should not even be compared to Twlight. I for one was very disappointed in this book. I found the beginning to be okay and then towards the end of the book it headed even more down hill. I found the beginning to be quite uninteresting and the character Estella to be lacking and very unlikable. Estella is very obnoxious, self-centered, bratty, and annoying. This kind of character makes me question what Edgar even saw in her. She has a huge temper, she throws temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way, and she makes a lot of situations about her (like when she was contemplating about killing herself). Another aspect I disliked about Estella is if she is supposed to be so smart, then why did she not learn from previous mistakes. She went off by herself outside, against Edgar's wishes once. Later on in the book, she does this again and this gets her captured by the enemy. I really didn't think the author thought this character through becuase the character suddenly decides that she is the one that is going to stop the bad guy. If Estella does not have all her powers and her strength pales in comparisson to the bad guy, then how is she supposed to stop the bad guy. I didn't even see really any charcter development in this book. There were like eight people in total in the whole book and the auhtor barely even talked about the history for Edgar or Estella. I guess the author wanted Edgar to mysterious, but shouldn't Estella at least get more back ground because all the background I got was of the person she was staying with before she went to college. Another problem I have with this book is that the plot is under developed. There is no major events that really happen in this book, which gives good reason for my lack of interest for this book. I was shocked that I read to the end of this book because of the lack of any interesting event.

Feather was a little slow in the beginning, nothing really happens until the last couple of chapters. It was kind of boring to be honest, It was a little confusing, I wasn't sure if they were angels or ravens or witches, but I think they are witches that turn into ravens, right, I think,,,, ?,,,

Nothing happened during the whole book, it was mostly Estella describing how she grew up being an orphan and she was different from everyone else. She could heal things specially plants and flowers. She then started college, and met this boy that was annoying, (Scott) he was way too cheerful. And then she met Sarah, who was exactly like Scott.

She then met one of her teacher Edgar whom she found very irresistible, something was attracting her to him and she didn't understand. It was weird the thing between Elle and Edgar. He tells her he and shes all cool with it, she even guessed it herself. Its funny cus usually in books it takes the girl most of the book to figure out what's wrong with the guy. And Elle just guesses it and shes not scared or nothing.

He is also way too possessive, kind of creepy too. To me it looks like he's hiding something from her, cus he is always looking at her like he has an inside joke. Idk I don't really think he's that great. Yeah it was cute that , very cute but the whole thing still seemed a little strange.

And in the end Edgar who was an old friend of Elle and Edgar, , who knows what will happen now, I guess Elle had to wait for Edgar , but that means he won't remember anything including her. Sad, after all does years of waiting, he won't remember a thing.

2011 was a year when I read a lot of fanfiction side to side with self-published books. I've just (now being 2015) read Ebner's Book of Love and my consensus was that the level of writing was that of fanfiction. Here's the link to that review

Then I found in my reading history that I did read Ebner's other series (the Feather series). My goal is to re-rate these books that I read way back then for an accurate reflection on my current book standards.

I gave Ebner's books a 15 pages chance to convince me that it is worth recommending to others.

Here's my review:

I gave up 19 pages in (a little over 6000 words). I never even actually got to the plot. I can't fathom how I finished reading this way back when (maybe I skimmed a lot?). I don't even remember the plot.

The writing is incredibly unfocused, and the author needs to focus on her plotting, making sure that every word counts to advancing the plot. So far, all I've seen evidence of is bland characterization and boring dialogue.

Also, it's sad when a book's cover needs to advertise "Second Edition Fully Edited" and has grammatical errors on the first page:

Their flawless creation was angelically perfect, and therefore all wrong, fore nothing could be more perfect than the gods themselves.

Be weary when an author puts in a good solid two pages of a famous author's poem, instead of quoting just a line or two. (And I didn't count the two pages of Poe's poetry as part of the 19 pages I've read). This means that the author's writing isn't strong enough to stand on its own.

From the preface, it was evident that the author had an interesting premise/idea. But this book does not exceed the level of fanfiction.

I don't recommend this book to anyone.

I will now read the beginning of the other two books to accurately rate them.

Lalu salah satu imortal lain menginginkan jiwa Estella.

Alright, so I've had this book for quite a few years. And besides the terrible rating I gave it, this book is actually very dear to my heart, and I'm not exactly sure I can explain why. I know this is a similar book based off of Twilight, and that's originally why I picked up this book in the past (when I was going through my Twilight phase).

First up, the writing is terrible. Estella (well thought out name by the way) snorts every other sentence. Edgar (again, I can tell the author had a hard time coming up with that name) furrows his eyebrow every couple of seconds, striking a dangerous, yet sexy pose. The characters are very deep or complex, although the author tries to make them seem that way. And the way she tries, just makes the characters seem whiny and insecure (which they are) and every emotion they have is WAY over the top.

I think a part of me that liked this book is the part that knows that my writing (which totally smells like butt cheeks by the way) is exactly like this when I was in high school (and even more so now that I'm out of high school). The style writing, and how hard she tries to make it romantic, but it ends up over the top and revolting almost (yep, I can relate).

They can turn in ravens? Really?

Edgar Poe? Really? Even I snorted at that part. REALLY?

Ugh, there's so much more...but I can't....I just can't. I'm too tired to write anymore. Maybe I'll update this someday. Maybe.

Feather by Abra Ebner was definitely a slow starter for me, like, the first fifty pages slow. After it finally started moving, the intrigue kicked in and I was reading furiously. The concept of this book is poetic and enchanting, which ranks high on my "subject matters to read" list.

My problem was that the ending was anticlimactic in my opinion and I felt a little let down as far as cliffhangers go, in that it didn't cause me to furiously start the next book so as to make sure my fictional world was put right again. This reason (and the slow start) is why it gets three stars.

In the interest of full disclosure, while I liked the book and thought Ebner did a great job making me love this couple while empathizing with the tribulations they face, I probably wouldn't read the rest of this series. But, given the fact I always finish a series no matter how much I may be disinterested in it (shout out to the House of Night Series), I will finish and hopefully Ebner can tone up the beginning and ending on what has the potential to be a fantastic trilogy.

While there were some rough spots in the book, I still found myself totally caught up in the love affair between Elle and Edgar. Similar to Twilight in the whole soul mate relationship with the twist of Edgar/Edward also hungering for Elle/Bella's soul/blood, Feather is still uniquely different. That's what drew me into the story.

I love the whole premise of how beings like Elle and Edgar were created. How they were at one time a single angelic being which was torn into two by spiteful gods. And how they walked the earth never really whole until they found each other. And when they found each other, they would either destroy each other or make each other whole.

This is Edgar & Elle's story... the last couple of their kind.
