Weathering the storms together is what love is about
Wow, we get a whole new Clayton here and he is much improved, he no longer drinks, nor is he condescending and aggressive. He is however man enough to defend Lacey and rescue her from the disastrous and almost stalkerish dates she finds herself on. There may be a number of misunderstandings and false starts to their relationship but Clayton and Lacey finally take a chance and fall in love. A sweet read on Kindle Unlimited.
This series is basically about the West family. They head the police department, the local hospital, the city management, and have a hand in the fire department. This is Clayton’s story.
Clayton is a policeman, working under his father, the Chief of Police. Clayton has a reputation as being a player, a bully, and a heavy drinker. He has recently given up alcohol and cleaned up his life. Lacey has been a frequent dater, looking for Mr. Right. Lacey and Clayton don’t really like each other because of their reputations. However, they have been teamed up as best man and maid of honor for Clayton’s brother’s wedding. The bride happens to be Lacey’s best friend. As they are thrown together through various wedding planning activities, they learn to respect and even like each other. Clayton has matured considerably since the beginning of this series. Once despising his half-brother Sean and not willing to have any contact with him, they become friends as Clayton learns how to be a K-9 handler from Sean.
Jenna Brandt’s books portray different levels of spiritual content. This one had very little. I, personally, prefer more Christian concepts, attitudes, and actions.
I received a copy of this book from the author. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
I've read all the books in their series and enjoyed all the characters. Clayton has been in all of them and has been a very big jerk. I couldn't imagine him being nice enough to have his own romance story! However, the author did a very nice job of redeeming him! It started in the previous book where he began to "come to himself" and realize that he needed to make some changes in his life, beginning with abstaining from alcohol! In this book, he continues to make more changes and I loved the life lesson here - you CAN make changes in yourself and become a better person. He's tried dating various women in their small town so it's hard to make a fresh start in that direction! He's pretty much decided that he might not find someone to date. However, when he has to spend time with Lacey planning the couples wedding shower for his brother and her best friend, he can't understand why he's attracted to her! The same goes for Lacey! Plus, Clayton gets a new assignment at work being a K9 officer. I enjoyed this light romance plus a mystery to solve book!
I’ve generally enjoyed the DCSR series and all of Jenna Brandt’s books, but this relationship story is disjointed. It moves forward and then stops and then goes forward some more only to stop again. Some challenges within a relationship makes for a good story generally, but in this case the reasons they stop are insufficient and distracting or largely ignored when it’s meaningful. A list made in junior high school for the “perfect” partner and previously dating others in a small town stopped the relationship, but being an alcoholic in recovery or a policeman with a dangerous job than causes a threat to individuals is ignored and not even discussed with in the relationship. Crazy.
Still love learning about DCSR training, but this policeman who’s never worked with a dog before being assigned a difficult dog decides to go be a trainer instead of becoming the police chief in his town like his father wants. And then he’s assigned to be trained. This book is as afterthought and didn’t get the attention it needed to earn more than three stars.
Full disclosure,,, After reading the previous books in this series, I had a strong dislike for the character of Clayton. That being said; he redeemed himself in this book. Clayton has cleaned himself up and become a lot less of a jerk. He is assigned a canine partner in order to help him solve a drug problem that has been uncovered. He is also Noah’s best man in the coming up wedding. Lacey is Aubrey’s maid of honor. She is also tired of the dating game and not finding the guy of her dreams. She has grown up seeing how Clayton has behaved through the years and fully believes he is not her type. Will working together on this wedding bring them to a new understanding of each other? The book is enjoyable with a bit of romance and a little mystery included.
A true family. Clayton is a man who trying to be a better person many people of the town cannot let the past die but it is not going to stop him. Lacey is a lady who really is a sweetheart and great teacher but cannot find that one right person to love. You will meet the villain of the tale pretty much in the first part of the book you will not know how bad that person is until later. It is a good story seeing how Clayton and Lacey find each other plus there is action and danger just to keep you engaged in the story not that you will need it. What really was nice was how a family came together maybe a bit disappointed with Clayton decision but still the unit was rock solid. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.
This story depends a lot of having read the previous ones in the series. Clayton was unlikable at first. In the last book he was noticeably less so. He's actually nice in this one. Other people have noticed, although some still hold his past against him. I loved watching the relationship between Clayton and Lacey grow. They don't want to like each other. That is one of my favorite tropes.
Of course, this is a first responder story, so we see some action as a mystery is solve. It was all well done and a nice way to spend the evening.
I loved reading Clayton’s story. If you have read any of the other novels involving the West family, you know all about Clayton and his attitude. He is quick to pick a fight, loathes his half brother Sean and is far from having a series relationship. By giving up alcohol, he has become a changed man and everyone can tell. He id able to see Sean in a new light as well as has the desire to have a series relationship. Now he just has to prove to Lacey he really is a changed man. This was a great read full of love, mystery, and forgiveness.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was looking forward to Clayton story after reading "Arresting Her Heart". I did enjoy this story. It is well written and keeps ones interest. For me though I felt it didn't go deep enough. I wanted deeper emotions. I also read this out of order and the drinking issue for Clayton seemed out of the blue. I've listened to both books 1 and 2 now in this series and still haven't had another mention of the drinking issue. Perhaps it is in 3 and 4 I'm not sure. Either way, this series has characters that the reader can feel invested in and there is humor mixed in with the tension of the story.
This story was so beautiful. Clayton was such a wonderful character. He was a very determined, hard-working young man who wanted nothing more than to prove himself to his community.
Lacey was a lovely character to read, too. She came across as quite shy, but on the other hand, she was a hard-working, loyal person. Also, she was very feisty.
She was wonderful at her job, and she complimented Claytons job role and his character too.
Light, sweet romance and mystery. Big family issues. It is nice to be familiar with the group from previous books in the series, but not necessary. The couple and their problems stand on their own. The story centers around a wedding (not theirs!). A dog adds a little action to the tale. Thanks to the author for providing a copy. My review is voluntary.
I loved reading Lacey and Clayton's story. It's a clean inspirational romance that has just enough family drama and suspense to keep you turning the pages. I loved how Clayton turned his life around with the help of God. I loved k-9 Caliber! Him and Clayton made a great team. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
I'm really enjoying this series and all the characters. I loved Clayton and Lacey's story. Neither is sure of what they want. They are thrown together to plan a bridal shower and sparks fly. A really good read that I read straight through. I look forward to more books in the series.
Rescuing their date is a clean, heartwarming, inspirational romance with the mystery of the drugs in town. I wondered how Ms. Brandt would redeem Clayton - he was such a jerk for so many books. God and Ms. Brandt (with a little help from Caliber) did such an amazing job that it is no wonder Lacey falls in love with him! I thoroughly enjoyed this well written book.
Absolutely love all the First Responders books. Great story proving that people really can change with the help of God. Clayton redeemed himself and turned out to be a great guy. The mystery kept me guessing what would happen next and who the bad guy actually turned out being was a shock. Keep up the good work. You're an amazing author.
It’s not easy to be a West. Jenna Brandt has given us a series with interesting plots, outstanding characters, humor and twists and turns. Lacey and Clayton both have misconceptions of what the other is like. Their past dating history has given each a distorted view. Working together for a wedding is just what the two need. Clayton has other worries besides Lacey, he has had a hard time accepting his half brother into the family, but wanting to be successful as a K-9 officer has him seeking Zane’s help. I love how this family can fight among themselves but close rank when needed.
As best man for his brother, Clayton had to try and get along with the maid of honor. Lacey, however, knew his reputation and fought against any feelings she was beginning to feel for him. Could they work together to make Noah and Audree’s wedding run smoothly or just what was going to happen? Another good one by this author.
Clayton has pretty much been the family black sheep even though he is a police officer. Now his biggest problem seems to be getting everyone to believe in him. When he runs into Lacey at the dinner being hassled, of course he steps in. Little did he know how many lives would be changed for ever from that one quick encounter!
This was the story of a young man who was a police officer and because he was not sure what he wanted his father, the police chief, gave him a partner to work with. This partner was a dog who was trained to find drugs, that were harming the young children in their town. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
Clayton has changed so much. He's a new man trying to find lasting love not by the day. His career, his life, his feeling and family grow in this story. Great way for him to come to terms with all his past decisions and work for his dreams. She is now his dream.
Nice to see Clayton a reformed trouble maker prove that people can change if they truly want to. It took Lacey Ashley to give him a chance bit when she finally does they find that they have a lot in common.
This was a sweet romance with both Clayton and Lacey working through personal issues as they struggled to decide if there was a future for them. I enjoyed the characters, including Caliber. That wedding must have cost a fortune. A fun read.
I love a good mystery romance and this one did not disappoint! Clayton and Lacey were wonderful characters, and their drama kept me intrigued. Can't wait to read another one!
The story line was good. Everyone has a past. But the rehash in the characters thoughts was getting old by the end. I found myself speed reading through certain parts. And actually was predictable.
