Larry has PTSD from shell-shock he suffered in Afghanistan. Marty, a beautiful iron-worker he meets, also has PTSD from sexual abuse heaped on her by her former husband, Scott. Other than PTSD, there is little in common between them at first blush. He's studying criminology at night school. She's rebuilding from divorce with her two kids in tow. Their relationship blows up when she discovers a decaying corpse while working a job at a very deep sinkhole that motorists have driven into, Larry uses his forensic studies to identify the corpse, Suddenly bullets begin to fly at him from unknown sources. The circumstances point to Marty as Scott's killer. Is she also the shooter firing at Larry to keep his mouth shut about what he's found?
The things he must endure to unravel the mystery are overwhelming---more than just bullets. His patience is sorely tried and her composure is shattered . Will their PTSD blow them apart? They both have the illness, but they both love each other.
A murder, mystery novel that is extremely well written, with an especially ingenious finale.
The novel opens when human remains are discovered in a sinkhole 40-feet deep. To further their studies, two criminology students, Larry Ehrlich and David Berkowitz, aided by a disgraced journalist, decide to lead their own investigation to identify the body.
Fresh out of the military, Larry has a failed marriage, is suffering from PTSD from his time in a war zone, and is working for his father who considers him a disappointment. Marty also works for Larry's father, she's suffering from PTSD from the abusive treatment of her ex-husband who has since disappeared. Larry and Marty become romantically involved but a future together seems unlikely considering their personal problems and their opposite social backgrounds. When Marty tries to persuade Larry to cease his investigation, he begins to suspect that the corpse is her ex-husband and she was involved in his death.
A highly intricate plot as Larry and David work together to discover the identity of the corpse, why he was killed and to locate and apprehend the murderer. This is addictive reading, a real page turner .
I have never read anything by David Selcer before, this was interesting. Marty and Larry both suffer from PTSD; but against all odds they fall in love. Could it possibly work out? Marty lives in a trailer park on the wrong side of the tracks, Larry is a trust fund guy. Can they work together to identify an unrecognizable corpse? The plot was interesting, the setting great, and what a cast of characters. A great story.
