Calvin and his friend, Diego, grow up to be full-fledged vaqueros, exactly what Coltrane had always dreamed they would be. They ride the range on the horses they trained, trail cattle to the railhead and sell horses to the Army. They have encounters with evil and overcome. They learn their wild horses can race with the best of them, and Calvin continues his study of the law.
I've read over 41R.O.Lane Westerns. Too many Western authors focus on Whisky drinking just prior to a life or Death gun fight, TOTALLY unrealistic, visits with prostitutes, drunk cowboy, and it quickly grows boring and unrealistic. Mr. Lane writes about real human beings, of true Love, human pain, hunger, poverty, family loyalty and devotion, Character and human dignity, dreams, failures, and not giving up. Character, true love and friendship loyalty. Ability at craftsmanship, training young people, caring for children and those of misfortune, fighting with and for the under=dog. He also shares occasionally something rarely in Western stories; that's sharing the felt secrets of the human heart. And he honors real personal Faith in GOD! I respect you! I return to choose out Author R.O.Lane repeatedly. Having owned horses in WY and MT and personally helped a rancher in a cattle roundup, cattle drive, and branding West of Sheridan, WY, I can appreciate the attention to real life horse, manship, dirty, dangerous work, real blizzards and having your horse stand on your foot; I admire R.O.Lane. I salute you, Sir! GOD bless.
I have enjoyed these characters from the first book. However, this book was not up to the same high standards as the previous two. In this story the author had some of his characters make thoughtless mistakes just to make the story work. I always hate when an author does that to the reader and his characters. Also, this whole story felt very rushed as if the author is impatient to finish the series. Some things that could have taken a few books were raced through. Some situations did not make sense. Why hurry to complete a home and develop all the outbuildings when the character was not going to live there.? Why buy a second home when you have not lived in the first? This was not at all typical to the time period the story was set in. For these reasons this book came down from the previous five star review to three.
I hope I am not being overly repetitive in my praise of Mr. Lane. I saw that this book was available a few hours ago, and couldn't put it down. I love this series and cannot wait for the next one. If you have read one of his novels, I need say nothing more. If you have not, I encourage you to start on an incredible journey. There are not many certainties in life, but if you open one of his stories, a thoroughly enjoyable read is one of them.
I like the soft way Lane approaches life in his novels. Kinda makes you want to meet the author and see if his real life is as good and gentle as his novel characters. This character action is missing in Johnstone and many of the other good western authors although Kelton's approach is similar. And Kelton is the best and a good one to emulate. I look forward to the next book!
I am really enjoying this series and looking forward to the next one. I hope to read other stories as well. Thank you sir for making my evenings in front of the fireplace something I look forward to. My husband likes your books as well so I have company in front of that fireplace.
The author is a master story teller and I have enjoyed every 0f his book that I've read so far. I liked them so well that I downloaded all of the rest of his books that I haven't read yet. I definitely am a fan and will be watching for any new books to come in the future.
Coltrane rescues two children from Indians, marries their aunt, strikes it rich with a gold mine, buys a ranch, raises cutting horses, has several gun fights, saves a young girl from a murder charge, sends Calvin to become a lawyer, and now sees Calvin married. Wow! Lots of action and great storytelling.
When I downloaded the vaquero books, I delayed reading book 1 and book 2 for the longest time as I felt they couldn't be as good as the first book. Boy, was I wrong! Outstanding books. The times were rough but the characters in all three books were more than capable of handling any problems that came up.
Third book. I try to avoid serials as a rule but a) I'm addicted to R. O. Lane's stories. These three books have been so entertaining. Yes the heroes win and are amazing with never waiting honor and integrity. But isn't that why we read them? If you're new to the author these will capture you and hold you hostage to his stories past and hopefully in the future.
This book was absolutely incredible, I loved it! Definitely a must read, for excitement galore throughout this book, lots of drama, exciting moments and characters who will keep you turning those pages. So don't miss this one, you'll want more. 📚🤠🐝🎶
As an avid reader, this series will keep you reading wanting more. It’s A cannot put down series one of the best. I have read in many years, so started the beginning and read the whole series. each book ties in perfectly with the last book. Congratulations more books like this should be written.
Fun storyline because it follows solid life principles. I like it when my heroes a d heroines present with character and honor. Makes it fun to identify with them and this story certainly lends itself to that end. Good people living good lives inspire of worldly distractions. Good read
I have read all of R. O. Lane's books, many of them twice. This is a follow-up to the other two stories in the series (both also excellent). If you don't like westerns with cursing and sex, you'll enjoy everything written by Mr. Lane.
R O Lane continues with Coltrane and Calvin. I love the characters, plot and his storytelling skills. I couldn't go to sleep with out fin thing this book! Excellent read!
And the story of two friends continue. Coltrane and Calvin have been successful miners, cattle men and horse trainers. They continue to be successful in life and love.
Can't wait to find out what happens next...Best to read in order... I always look forward to Mr Lane's books. They are so good it feels like I'm experiencing the Wild West. Please keep them coming!!!
I’ve read every RO Lane book that I can find and I’m ready for the next installment. The character development and growth is amazing. Keep on writing and I’ll keep on reading!
I loved everything about this book. It had a good story, excitement and family. Mr. Lane is a great writer and I look forward to another one of his books.
Great storytelling. Very inspiring story about overcoming odds about overcoming obstacles in life and succeeding. Not so sure any 16 year olds could do what Calvin did. But we can always dream.
This is a fantastic story. I love this family. They are real characters filled with joy and not afraid of anything. They protect their family and do the right thing. Excellent reading.
Always enjoy Lane's books. I've read them all over the past few years. Only one negative.....seems there is more profanity in this book than usual. None of it is necessary and I hope the author will leave it out of future books.
It was a good continuation of the series. R.O. Lane continues to do a good job continuing the tradition of western novels. The right amount of action to keep story going.
I am totally addicted to R. O. Lane's stories. suspenseful clean writing is my preferences in reading and I read a lot everyday. You will enjoy this heart touching story.
I read all 3 books and really enjoyed them. I have read a lot of Mr. Lanes books and he is one my favorite author's. I hope Mr. Lane continues writing the series about Coltrane and Calvin.
Raised by Coltrane to take no slight by any man, Calvin learns manage their ranch as he reads law books are home. Calvin and the girl he rescued 3years ago is more than a riding companion.
