A pretty, 28 year old Seattle paralegal looking for her missing sister by posing as a "courtesan" in an underground sex club; a dark and dangerous looking SBI (Washington State Bureau of Investigation) Special Agent (who could make a living as an underwear model) working undercover investigating the murder of his (female) partner and the disappearance of several women from the same club; a blond, hunky, overendowed millionaire entrepreneur who is a major investor in the same sex club...put them all together, add plenty of sex, a tad suspense, and you have Under The Covers.
This book started with a promising premise (if you're looking to read an erotic romance that has a little suspense to it), but somewhere along the way it just didn't fully engage me. I wanted to fall in love with the characters, and I barely got to the 'like' stage. I just felt I didn't really know any of them all that well. There were so many questions left unanswered. Mia, the heroine, was looking for her younger sister who disappeared somewhere in the Seattle club scene, and was last traced to the Emerald Club. Why did she disappear? What was she into? What kind of relationship did she have with the sister who practically raised her when their mother died? Where was their father? What did the mother die from? These were some of the questions I wanted answered. And they weren't.
And Mia? All I learned about her was that she had been raising her sister since the age of 15, got her G.E.D., worked hard to support her, stutters when she's nervous, and recently had taken a paralegal course and now worked (by day) for a lecherous, well-known lawyer who was known for sexually harassing his employees. By night she was working as a "courtesan" (prostitute) in a sex club where the girls were auctioned off to the highest bidder. She hoped that by working at the club, she would be able to talk to 'the girls' and maybe get a lead on what happened to her sister...and if she had to give up her body to do that...? The book starts with her first night on the job (How did she get it?), she's on stage (terrified--it finally hit her that she's going to have to "put out"), she spots Mr. Tall, Dark and Dangerous in the crowd...and starts hoping that he'll be the one to bid on her! What? Shouldn't you be thinking about finding your sister? Okay, so she got a little distracted...
Wayde, our hero, bids $10,000 (and wins!) Mia's services for the night. Wayde can see how innocent and nervous she looks on stage, and doesn't want to see anything "bad" happen to her. His plan is to see if "Candy" (her professional name) will help him out by being his 'informant'. And he'll throw in a few "O's" to sweeten the deal...But Wayde doesn't know that Candy is not who she claims to be (at least not until later).
I didn't learn much about Wayde either, except that he had a sister, lived in a rundown building (which he hoped to renovate) which was willed to him by his grandfather. Oh yeah, he was drop dead gorgeous too. And good with his hands (and mouth).
Okay, so finally Wayde learns why Mia's working in the club, and Mia learns that Wayde's a Special Agent looking to bring down the person responsible for murdering (and mutilating) his partner, who was working undercover with him. Maybe with his connections, he can help Mia find her sister?
Then they meet the long lost relative of Devin Spawn (Devil's Pact)...no, just kidding...actually they meet a mysterious man who frequents the club, millionaire entrepreneur James Pearce, who bids $25,000 on Mia (these are some high price call girls). But Pearce doesn't want just Mia, he wants to include Wayde in on the fun. Huh? No, not what you think, no m/m action here. Pearce has a little problem, having to do with his enormous endowment (he's afraid of "hurting" his women), so he needs to have another man take her first before he can get aroused. Okaaay...
To put it in a nutshell, the three of them get along like a house afire. Lots and lots of lusty lovin' ensues, and Mia eventually takes on the "cannon" junior (oops, wrong book). And she takes on some bing cherries, frozen grapes, honey, Bailey's Irish Cream...didn't quite make it to the cucumber. And she finds herself (*gulp*) falling for two men!
I don't know if it was just me, but I didn't feel that there was much investigating going on. Aside from questioning a couple of the other girls, just what was Mia's plan? I never felt like she had one. It seemed to me like she was just 'winging it'. And Wayde? Don't know what he was up to. Yeah, he had a plan, but it went up in smoke when he chose Mia to be his 'informant'--she knew nothing. If it wasn't for the mysterious James Pearce and all his resources, who once again, had a backstory that was sorely undeveloped, the case would have never been solved. Luckily this guy, who had a big connection to the case, stepped in and got the ball rolling.
Once Pearce got the ball rolling, the action started to pick up, the suspense kicked in, and it became a better book. Yeah, it actually moved much quicker after it dispensed with all the sometimes over-the-top sex scenes. There was a nice, suspenseful conclusion, and a HEA that made me think we haven't seen the last of this trio (big plot thread left hanging).
This book had a lot of promise, but fell just short of delivering for me. If I had a little more background on the characters, a little more convincing 'investigation', if I had really believed in the love story...I don't know, I needed something more. I wasn't all that enamored with either the hero or the heroine--the character I was most intrigued with was the enigmatic James Pearce. There's was lots left unsaid about him, and I wouldn't mind reading more in a future book. This book had a lot of potential, had some entertaining moments, but didn't quite satisfy me fully. With a little more development it might have earned another star. As it stands, for me it earns--3 stars.

This really isn't a fair rating because Eve writes a really good story. If it wasn't erotica I'd rate it a 4 star easy. So if you like the erotica gender you'll love it. If not maybe read something else that is written under her other name of Allie Adams
