3 stars for me. The mysery was good and so was the narration but the character of Wavonne made it not quite as enjoyable. IMO there was nothing to like about her. And because Halia let her get away with so much I had no sympathy for Halia and what she had to put up with.
Not sure I will continue the series unless there is proof that Wavonne grows up.

Cozy mysteries are my jam. This one was fun by a "new to me" author. Love the recipes throughout. I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the narrator.

Halia has built Mahalia's Sweet Tea into a popular soul-food restaurant in Prince George's County. Her restaurant serves dishes inspired by the cooking she learned from her grandmother, and food is central to Halia's identity. But there is one major problem: Marcus Rand has money tied up in the restaurant. He helped Halia get the restaurant started financially, which means that although Halia doesn't particularly like or trust him, she cannot simply cut him out of her life. One evening, Marcus brings several people to the restaurant for a private dinner. He asks Halia to prepare special dishes for the group. The guests stay far later than Halia wants them to and she tells Marcus to lock up after everyone has left. Then things take a turn and Marcus is found dead in the restaurant later that night. Halia is determined to find the killer even if it risks her life.

This was a cute little murder mystery. A good read especially after reading something so heavy. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

Overall, I enjoyed the book.... I didn't enjoy Mahalia. Her personality was very critical of everyone except her grandmother... wish she was more joyful.

Cute story and great recipes. I am having a love hate relationship with Wavonne. We shall see if she grows up any in the second book or later in the series. God's, I hope so.

Kudos for Michelle Williams’ narration of the book especially Wavonne!

Overall, enjoyed the book. However, there are a few things that didn’t quite make sense but I liked the characters, the setting, the mystery and the recipes.

The distinctly different personalities and backgrounds of Halia and Wavonne was very well done. Halia and Wavonne must remember that momma/auntie Celia knows what’s what.

I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
