Do your signals get lost in translation? Would you like communication superpowers? The human race relies on communicating to survive, yet we are horrible communicators. Every day we experience assumptions, conflict, triggers, and disconnect, but we never really hone our communication skills. Blaise Hunter, the author of Embrace Your Flaws & Own Your Awesome, takes you on a journey of becoming a Captain Communicator. Through this brave story of reflection, trauma-healing, and heroism you can learn how • Reduce arguments and turn them into meaningful dialogues. • Heal the internal wounds by taking control of our narratives. • Speak the body's language. • Become a universal translator. "I can't help it if someone takes issue with what I'm saying or doing, but when they come at me, it is my responsibility to receive and respond with maturity, grace, and wisdom. This is how we stop the identity theft." Blaise Hunter This book is a deliberate provocation to trigger us forward. Communication is connection. We must connect to the nemesis in our lives and let it propel us into growth. When we grow, we evolve. When we evolve, we become wise. When wisdom and maturity collide, we encounter purpose. When we build a highly sophisticated and emotionally intelligent comms system within, we construct the confidence to fight for our lives. After going through earth-shattering traumas and developing a rare autoimmune disease, Blaise was forced to make a choice. Either stay the course and die—or face the mirror, rewire, and live. These words make up her life. She invites you in to see all the good, the bad, and the ugly. Through it all, we can obtain tools to navigate through life in a brave way. A hero’s journey isn’t about the wins; it’s about how we take the losses and turn them into life-giving superpowers. The misery is our muse.
If you aren’t a superhero in your mind, you won’t be one in life. 🦄🦄🦄
Captain Communicator: How to Turn Signals into Superpowers by Blaise Hunter is a 10-chapter self-help book that helps people become better communicators.
Each chapter talks about how we can improve our communication skills in different situations. e.g., telling our partner we had a bad day and wanting them to listen as you talk. I know it may sound like a small thing, but a lot of times when people are communicating, there's listening without understanding, so the needs of a person may not be fulfilled.
Proper communication is key to a healthy relationship (it doesn't matter what type of relationship it is), so in the same way, understanding what another person needs without misreading their emotions is crucial.
This book provides a cursory solution to this problem, but the actual effort needs to come from everyone.
Initially, while reading the book, I was under the impression it was going to be a self-help book, but after having a conversation with the author, it became clear that this is more than just a self-help book, but is also partly a memoir of the author's life and struggles.
Overall, it is a good book, but I would like to hear if anyone used this book in real life.
Connection is so innately human, yet we find ourselves struggling to facilitate effective communication, ultimately resulting in the opposite of what we need. We are quick to judge others, negatively react when things don’t go our way and commit “identity fraud” when we mask our authentic selves. Blaise Hunter, the author of “Captain Communicator,” has provided readers with an invaluable gift—the skills necessary to become a next-level communicator.
Each section is representative of all the different hats we wear daily—spouse, parent, friend, co-worker. As a result, our communication styles may vary depending on the situation. Still, we cannot flourish in the abovementioned areas without working on ourselves. Therefore, the author teaches us how to build a solid foundation, including working through past traumas, acknowledging triggers, and, if necessary, changing our narrative, so we are primed to be successful communicators in any situation.
Blaise Hunter did an excellent job capturing my attention with relevant stories and personal experiences. I must commend her level of transparency regarding her struggles with abandonment, feeling alienated from her church community, and facing her traumas after years of masking them. As a reader, this showed me that she was relatable and writing from a place of love rather than proclaiming she was an expert with an unblemished past.
My favorite section, and probably the one that needs the most attention in my life, was the chapter on effective communication in friendships. Like the author, I am a self-proclaimed heart-on-my-sleeve wearer. In the past, friendships have left me hurt, heartbroken, and insecure—all because I hadn’t acquired the skills to be upfront about what I needed from the relationship. The author showed me that setting boundaries, establishing both parties’ communication styles, and (slowly!) revealing vulnerabilities was the key to unlocking a healthy friendship.
For the most part, the book kept my attention with relatable stories and helpful tips. Still, there were moments my interest wavered, particularly in the section about religion. It felt that the author was venting more than offering a solution, thus veering off course. But beyond that, I was immersed in the writing. Overall, the book was brimming with wisdom and practical tips for upping your communication game.
Captain Communicator by Blaise Hunter is an insightful book that will help readers develop communication skills. Blaise discusses topics such as how can we communicate better as people, and transcended the variety of barriers between us. She breaks the topic down by discussing communication with the different types of people we regularly interact with such as our parents, partners, friends, and co-workers. The author discusses more than just communication and looks at the connection between trauma, healthy relationships, boundaries and more. She uses these topics to broaden the discussion around communication and shows the links between them.
The author helps the reader critically think about their ability to communicate. In order to help the reader, she gives an honest account of how she recognized her positive and negative communication traits and how she used her experiences as an opportunity to improve hers.
Blaise allows the reader to connect with her by sharing her raw and unfiltered thoughts and emotions. There are sections where the author discusses her thoughts and feelings about her past traumas which read more like a diary. I felt as though I was having a conversation with a friend or a mentor. Blaise's writing allows the reader to reflect upon themselves and their past experiences and see how to improve themselves.
I was expecting a book that gives the reader a step-by-step account of how to communicate better, but this book has more of a storytelling element. This was a pleasant surprise and made for an interesting read rather than having facts and information thrown at you. If you are looking for a book that gives you a personal account of how one individual improved their communication skills, and learn a lot about their life along the way, then this enlightening book is definitely for you.
