Snow falling at the Nature Station means the wildflowers have retreated undercover for the winter. Kristen Matthews goes undercover as well, after a body is discovered on her property. Trying to catch the killer before the joy and peace of the holiday season are shattered further, will Kristen be able to solve the mystery before more lives are shattered--including her own? Taking a break from holiday event planning at the Nature Station, Kristen Matthews and her friend, co-worker, and bride-to-be, Hope Johnson, travel to Chicago to select Hope's wedding dress. Eating lunch at their favorite restaurant before they shop, they encounter a mysterious woman, dressed in retro sixties garb, only to run into her again--at the train station near their hometown of Eklund. Who is this woman, and what is she doing in Eklund? These questions become even more important when the woman is found dead--after a party held at the Nature Station's Red Barn. Dubbing the woman Flower Child, Kristen and her friends work to uncover the woman's true identity in an attempt to flush the killer out of the woods. Will they be successful and help convict the murderer?

Flower Child opens with an infectious holiday spirit as Kristen Matthews and Hope Johnson travel by train to Chicago for a day of big-city shopping. I found Powelson’s description of the train trip thoroughly detailed and delightful. I’ve made that trip myself on more than one occasion and loved revisiting the experience.

Now, getting back to Hope’s search for the perfect wedding gown, the one she’ll know it when she sees it. Kristen worries that the dress quest will consume all their free time in Chicago. Luckily, that is not the case, and they take a break at a favorite restaurant. While waiting for their food Kersten spots a woman whose stylish retro sixties look makes her an unmissable standout. Then the same woman is spotted as Kristen and Hope arrive back at the Kewanee train station. How strange to notice the same woman twice in one day, and so close to the quiet town of Eklund. The strange occurrences further pile up when the Flower Child, so christened by Kristen, shows up at a gala charity event being held at the Nature Station’s barn and by the end of the festivities turns into an unnamed murder victim.

Kristen has no choice but to assemble her regulars to pursue the odd assortment of clues that gradually lead to a key suspect. But all is not as it might seem. Track down the killer with Kristen, Hope, and the hometown gang in this fourth installment of the Nature Station Mysteries.
