This was a story that I couldn't put down once I started reading it. It has been a long time since a book grabbed me from the very start and wouldn't let go until the end.
To be sure, it is definitely not a novel for everyone because of content, but if you're looking for a great revenge story, and you can take the brutality that goes along with the telling of this story, you'll like this one.
This well-written novel had me turning the pages as fast as I could. It had no fluff or filler and was never boring.
Warning to some readers: rape and child rape and molestation content in all its gritty ugliness is part of the story as well as graphic torture.
That said, I'm looking forward to the next installment!
INNOCENT ASSASSIN [2022] By Paul McDonald My Review 5.0 Stars Out Of 5
This first novel by Paul McDonald is Book 1 of 2 which features the young Sakura Bianchi, diminutive in physical size but a powerhouse of intellect, strategy, and patience. The catalyst for the story line was a horrific home invasion by four animals a decade earlier. Ten-year-old Sakura’s mother was brutally raped and slaughtered, and the little girl suffered violent sexual attacks and physical abuses that left her barely clinging to life and presumed dead when the four felons fled from the bloody scene of carnage they had left in their wake.
Perhaps only in a fictional novel could there exist both the financial resources and the frighteningly far-reaching connections of a heartbroken father, the grievously injured child’s grandfather. He was Yakuza and prominent in a Japanese syndicate analogous to what we think of as the Mafia. The child Sakura must recover from the damage sustained by her body and then she is sent to an elite temple to learn the skills and the mindset to avenge her mother’s murder and her own assault.
This first outing of McDonald’s is very well-written, and he uses bold, confident strokes in its narrative to show his authoritative knowledge of Japanese martial arts and customs while simultaneously his infinite ease with forensics and the science of interpretation. The story comprises a case of foul play and is part police procedural in Australia. Details are meticulous and the chase by the authorities is realistic.
“Innocent Assassin” was incredibly readable, and its content touched me emotionally as the narrative plot line was perfectly paced with flashing back to the tragedy and then forward to the remarkable feats of revenge levied by the victim, in her own name and that of her mother’s. The novel was so entertaining and emotionally moving that the sensational revenge that the skilled and imaginative Sakura meted out was all the more fulfilling. The revenge techniques tip-toed into “Extreme Horror” which only made this reader love it more.
The genre designation is most aptly “Assassination Thriller” from the choices given. “Crime Thriller”? Maybe one with incredible depth and imagination on steroids. The actions of this young woman who meticulously avenged her own mother and herself is simply put, carefully planned justice. The young Sakura Bianchi reminded me a little of Dexter and his screening process, since she validated that the right men were targeted to pay for their savage home invasion so many years ago.
This was a really, really good book. My favorite novel last year was “I Kill Killers” by S.T. Ashton. Its sequel is not until September of this year, but I see Part 2 of Sakura’s dangerous escapades are already available. It is a sure bet I will be reading it. Kudos to author Paul McDonald for such an exciting, riveting, and satisfying tale of delayed justice delivered with positively brilliant precision.
“The Bride” (Beatrix Kiddo) dubbed “The Black Mamba” in the Kill Bill franchise does not have a thing on this compact brick of dynamite named Sakura.
EAGERLY RECOMMENDED TO OTHER READERS WHO LIKE STRONG FEMALE PROTAGONISTS AND INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES TO MAKE THE GUILTY PAY
I had to go out with public transport to buy a new telly as my old one stopped working, my partner having a hamstring injury. So I took this book along to read while waiting. A rather easy to read novel even if the subject is not always easy material. Five masked men enter a house leave the mother dead and her eleven year old daughter presumed death behind, after attacking and raping them both. The girl survives and her grandparents take her to Japan, her father being a influencial Yakusa leader helpt her on her way of recovering. She enters a school for martial arts and sort of monastry. When she graduats she is ready for the next step: revenge. 5 men who think that both mother and daughter have died and nobody knows about their dark deed. They are about to discover that revenge will happen and there is no merci to expect. The book is an easy and Quick read, it tells the story and does not take up any unnecessary pages. It is a lean story with some gratious violence towards the baddies which the reader will have little sympathy with. There is never any moment that you not sympathise with the Angel of Revenge. A well written first attempt that has a sequel for sale as well. I might be tempted to get a go at that one as well. An entertaining revenge story which is nothing more than that. No moral justification which is not needed but sometimes really emotional which is surprising.
A first in the series, a first read of this author, who kindly offered me this book to read, but I had already purchased this book.
Firstly let me say, this book does come with a warning, from the publishers and from me, this book is strong, very violent, torture but a strong and powerful story and realistic, it's the way of the world and sadly I am sure this happens around the world.
Still very important to bring this to the attention of you the reader.

Well the author has crossed something of his bucket list, accomplished, writing and publishing a book.
Four stars, as powerful, shocking at the same time. Vengeance is mine !
I am satisfied with the end .. it’s really sad and heartbreaking through it but feel PROUD in the last of it .. Alot of cutting 🖊️ .. slicing 🏀⚽️⚾️ and more 🫣🌚
Ps: be aware before deciding to read this novel to read the Warning contents “really good.. really carefully” make sure that your heart and blood pressure in good health 🥲 coz you will suffer!! Iam warning you warning ⚠️ warning ⛔️ warning ‼️
I stormed through this book! I was gripped from the start! Make sure you read the content warning before reading! This is a gritty story that hits hard in places and it can be triggering. So make sure you’re aware of what you’re reading first.
This was very well written! The author is clearly knowledgable about what he’s writing and it shines through in the story.
Sakura is a brilliant FMC with a hard and emotive back story. She is definitely a badass!
I genuinely enjoyed reading this gritty, moving, badass book.
This books was a great read! Kept me engaged and read very quickly! Definitely has some trigger warnings. Can be very explicit and descriptive at times about some of the horrendous actions. But overall really enjoyed! Glad you recommend it Paul!
I must say this has some dark triggers, BUT I absolutely loved it. I feel like it had an I spit on your grave vibe but way better. Definitely a hidden gem I didn't know existed until today. I can't wait to see what happens next with Sarkura.
Wow! Well written and a quick read. Wasn’t prepared for the graphic situations but they were appropriate. I missed the warning about that content. However, I am ready to read more about Sakura. Great job Paul
Innocent assassin: Sakura Bianchi by Paul McDonald Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
In this author’s debut novel, his FMC, Sakura, embarks on a mission to seek revenge for a sexual assault that happened to her as a child plus the murder of her mother in the same evening. I really like the premise of the book as I love a good revenge story. It reminded me of Kill Bill but with a younger character.
Conversely, the writing needs some additional editing/refinement. Some paragraphs are extremely descriptive and then the next will not be descriptive at all. I wish we had more character development of some side characters/Sakura’s victims. Overall, it was a quick read but deals with difficult subjects. Please check your TW before proceeding.
3,75* (I'll try to keep it short, because I don't have much time right now) The story itself is really good and many people have said that in better words. My biggest problem with the book was the abundance of details (especially the times). As someone for whom is English second language (or third, if you want to count Slovakian) I sometimes find it difficult to get in the story (I like to think of it as breaking through the words to get to the story)and in this book it was just super difficult for me 🫤. Later in the book I realized that it's because I keep thinking about all the details which obviously take me from the store back to real life... Overall I did enjoy the story!
Full disclosure, this is not my usual kind of read & the author approached me directly to read his book. I really liked the idea, story & characters, a very enjoyable read. Overall, the book could probably do with a bit of spit and polish, and trimming the fat a little, to reveal what has the potential to be a really excellent read. Paul has a bright future ahead of him.
Really enjoyable story of revenge for horrific reasons too. Give it a read yourselves. No messing around the story grabs you straight away and holds you til the end on the edge of your seat.
10/10! I have no words! This book had me closing my eyes and dropping my jaw. The details in this book are superb, and I cannot wait to read the next books in the series! I highly recommend this book if you have no triggers and can handle what you read on these pages!
This is a really good, highly original, revenge adventure that managed to keep my interest from start to finish.
A mother and daughter, simply enjoying the evening at home together, are both repeatedly raped, the mother murdered and the young girl left for dead, by a gang of 5 brutal, male intruders wearing animal face masks to conceal their identities. Little did they know that years later their outrageous behaviour and utterly deplorable actions on that night would, one by one, prove to be their ultimate downfall.
An introduction to lots of great, believable characters, a clever storyline and some extremely imaginative, creative killings that seemed very fitting, considering the circumstances. Loved the inclusion of the Australian saltwater crocodiles and dastardly mud crabs who became stars of the piece for me.
Already looking forward very much to reading the other books in this series.
Thank you, Mr McDonald - this read proved to be an absolute pleasure.
Rating: 4.2 glowingly bright stars of 100% action-packed fun.
I do read a lot of different genres and the author recommended this to me.
I liked the story line and I feel like it has a lot of potential. However I feel like a lot of Sakuras anger (don't get me wrong she has every single right to be angry) was driven by her grandparents and their need for revenge. It didn't really explain how she felt about being left at the temple for example or how she felt whilst training.
I was surprised to find that this is Paul McDonald's first novel. He gave his characters the level of depth you tend to see in seasoned writers stories. The heroine, Sakura, has spent a decade training to become a lethal assassin after she and her mother endured horrific torture at the hands of five sadistic men. Her mother was murdered and a young Sakura was left to die. The lethal warrior, encouraged by her grandparents, sets out to avenge her mother's death and her own torture. Beware: the torture scenes are quite graphic but the men get their just desserts at the hands of our warrior.
So heart breaking. Thank you Paul McDonald for recommending this book to me. I look forward to reading Part 2 "Innocent Girls" I don't want to give anything away about some details of this book. But I do recommend it. But if you're weak of the stomach, please read at your own discretion.
This book I received a recommendation from the author himself and of course with the additional wonderful cover and name. I was hooked and when I did pick up the book it felt that I had entered a tempest. Though not a big fan of child abuse, but the world is what it is. And the author has portrayed this. Nothing less nothing more. Maybe you all can give it a try. A good one from a first time author spending his retirement so well.
Page turner! I’m not typically a fast reader, but I finished this in a day! The author did a great job keeping you interested throughout the book. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series
I was contacted by the author about reading this book. I wasn't provided an advanced copy. I read it through Kindle Unlimited.
Going in, I knew it was about revenge for a sexual assault. I think the way it was presented was well done but there were some quirks that made it difficult to follow in a couple of spots. Overall though, it didn't detract from the story. The SA was in the book; not just a reference to what happened. It was just the right amount to explain why certain torture was done.
This book may not appeal to some. The killings are extremely detailed. I enjoyed it immensely which makes me wonder about myself. LOLOL
I do think that some of the explanations could have been left out. I read alien fiction and an alien word is an alien word and the meaning can be gleaned from context. I don't mind looking up words to get a better understanding.
An excerpt of Book 2 was included, which I read. I think I'm hooked on this series.
I love books that have the female main character so skilled at killing. HA! Again, I wonder about myself. LOLOL
I blew through this first book. It was sad and action packed and gruesome. I love Sakura’s story. This was very well written. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I couldn't put this story down. If you enjoy a good vigilante revenge story this is a great read.
This grabs you from the start it's nice and quick and to the point. It's a great introduction to the main character and her back story. Left me feeling like I need more which is good with two more books in the series.
This is definitely worth it if you like action, gore, horror, all of it. This book deals with some sensitive subject matter that is pertinent to the plot so check trigger warnings.
