It’s a cold world for Savvy Madden. With few people in her corner and family secrets that have shaped her upbringing for the worse; she’s searching for a way out but only digging deeper holes in the process. A night out with her big cousin, Michi, introduces Savvy to Shabu Blaise—a pragmatic hustler that shows her the art of love in a way she’s never experienced. Just when Savvy feels her safest, life reminds her that past decisions always have unavoidable repercussions.
Yes I know I said I hate cliffhangers 🤷🏽♀️ call me a hypocrite but Antoinette pulls reckless behavior out of me because her books are just that good and this was no exception! Sis!!!!!!!!! I knew it!!! Something told me these snakes were snaking!! Why you do me like this!! 🤧🤧Book 2 me ASAP!!!! Ugh!!!
Saavy has been dealt a shxtty hand in this game called life! Everything that can go wrong had gone wrong. The people who she thought she could depend on showed their true colors like they were Van Gogh!! They did my good sis dirty! The only person she can depend on his her cousin Michi who has been dealt an equally shxtty hand! If this was a spades game these two would have 1 and a possible 🥴all they have is each other and live by a motto that if no one else has them, they have each other. But don’t get it twisted because all is not lost. The big joker aka Shabu came through and put my good sis Saavy back in the game! This man is heaven sent and despite everything going on in his own world he feels a connection with Saavy that has been missing from his life🥰🥰
When this man finds out about what’s been going on tho… he is going to shake some tables for sure! His brother Relic is trash as well as every other female character in this book. Just when you think maybe you can trust one… 🗣YOU CANT!!! I cannot wait to read what happens next!
Savvy and her high school sweetheart Eric had life all figured out and she could not wait to get away from the terrible life she had been dealt. Eric however switched up and chose himself. Unfortunately, when she thought life couldn't get any worse it did and things started to unravel. Her disloyal raggedy azz friend Kiko just kept showing her azz and I did not understand why she kept entertaining her 😒. Savvy started to spend more time with her cousin Michi which led her to a party where she met Shabu. Shabu was a real one and Savvy allowed him to be more than the street ninja he was. Y'all know I can't stand a cheater, but I just loved Shabu 😫. His aura just gave good vibes. He was a protector for those he loved and the fact that he didn't toss Kelis to the side when he absolutely should've was beyond me. When Shabu and Savvy finally see a clear path together, that ish gets reeeeal murky and Shabu stayed down. I already knew it was about to get messy and I was waiting for the shoe to drop. Kiki with her punk azz revelations needs to catch those hands again.... Everything in me says it's Relic, but I feel like that would be too easy. Off to the next book for more stress and mess.
The traditional effect of dysfunction is not all that Savvy is. Although the emotions in this book are on a roller coaster, you find yourself rooting for each of the characters. As Savvy and Michi share a special bond, you can't help but be happy for them. Despite the fact that Savvy and Shabu are complete opposites, this story worked well with them. Even though she did nothing to earn it, Chile Savvy is experiencing it. I want to see how she handles this kind of life. They're WEIRD, Kiko and Relic. That ending caught me by surprise—WTF.
My mind is blown and tbh I’m still a bit speechless because can my girl Savvy or her cousin Michu catch a break?!? One night at a party the best of both worlds happens for Savvy, She meets the potential love of her life and has the worst thing that could ever happen to her take place. So much shame and guilt that she never admits the truth of that night until it’s too late?! And Shabu is a mannn and I feel for him because once he lets his guard down and handles his past something else pops up to get in between him and Savvy. This last thing though?! Omg 😭 Then there’s Michi and Titan and honestly, I’m rooting for them. I hope they can communicate for once to finally come together! This book was sooo good! It never stopped moving! And although Eric was an asshole I understand where he’s coming from, especially with the knowledge Savvy is withholding onto! This book was good! I definitely recommend but caution you to check the trigger warnings. SA, abuse, DV, and drugging are discussed on page. I still recommend this book and am running to start book 2!
This book pulled me in from the beginning. I think it’s a great book 1. A lot of building and chemistry between the two with other storylines outside of the romance. I didn’t like that Shabu was in a relationship but Savvy held him accountable and stood on business. That bomb that was dropped at the end 😱😱 I knew it!!
This book needed trigger warnings. I had a major issue with Savvy being a minor, even though no moves were made. But she was 17 for half the book.
Savvy and Michi’s bond was amazing but I absolutely hated what they had to go through at such young ages. I really wished the book had the trigger warnings at the beginning because I was not prepared. I won’t lie- I gave shabu the side eye a lot in the beginning. His story was the typical guy stuck in a relationship that had run its course but he grew on me. He had Savvy’s back from the night they met and he was in her corner through a lot. I knew Kiko wasn’t worth two cents from the jump and I’m furious about what she did to Savvy. Jealous and money hungry smh. I hope we don’t hear anymore from Jessica in the next book because she was trash too. I need Relic dealt with as well.
Nett delivered another hit with Savvy! I loved this story and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series! Savvy and Shabu are definitely opposites, but it worked well in this story. Savvy's dealt with a rough hand, beginning with her mother and her home life. It seemed she couldn't catch a break- Eric was supposed to be her way out. I loved the relationship Savvy and Michi had, they were each other's ride or die. My heart aches for Savvy, especially at the ending. Shabu is still a mystery to me; he has a darkness to him, but I can tell he wants love and wants it with Savvy. Overall, this book kept me engaged from beginning to end. I found myself irate with some of the supporting characters' there's a few villains that I didn't see and a few twists to the story. I am eager to read the next part!
Savvy is 18, just graduated from high school and is just trying to survive the real world. When Savvy meets Shabu, he’s everything she doesn’t want but everything she didn’t know she needed. Shabu ain’t pressed for a bish, matter of fact he has a whole situationship at home. That is until he meets Savvy aka Whoop aka souple. Sis got him saying and doing things he never thought he’d do and that includes leaving his roadie. Besides Michi he has become her biggest protector and supporter. My man’s needs a cape because if it wasn’t for bad luck, these girls wouldn’t have any. I don’t know who has it worse, Savvy or Michi. Even though both have their own traumatic past, they keep it ten toes down about each other. And honey with friends like theirs, who needs enemies!!! This is almost like a video game. The objective, get to the end of the road while dodging the potholes and pitfalls and it’s 🐍’s in them pitfalls. The one thing missing: Trigger warnings.
I must admit, I was a little upset at the lack of trigger warnings at the beginning of this book, so if you're reading this before you start this series...beware. it is heavy. There is definitely on page trauma that can be triggering. I struggled with not wanting to continue reading but also wanting to keep with it because I was already locked in early on. This book was written so well that I became immersed in the storyline and the characters. I had a snaky suspicion that things were going to go exactly where they went and my heard breaks for Savvy. She has been dealt a terrible hand but she has a light to her that hasn't been dimmed. I can't wait to co tine on with the next books in this series.
Savvy had been in survival mode for too long; she yearned for the moment where she could breathe easy.
To say Savvy lived in survival mode is an understatement. The cards that Savvy were dealt were cards no one, especially a young girl, should’ve been dealt. From her mother to her auntie to everybody in her family, Savvy had no one to depend on but her cousin Michi. And even then, they too couldn’t protect each other like they thought they could! That’s until … a little grumpy man named Shabu comes along.
I loved everything about Savvy! She was so young, but even though life was always throwing her for a loop my girl really tried her best to get it out the mud so that she could have a better life. With everything that was happening to Savvy throughout this book, I was so happy when she started to speak up and find her voice because certain people, I’m looking at you Kiko and Eric. They truly did not deserve to breathe the same air as her.
Now, my grumpy man Shabu! Shabu came in and I said yup, that man is everything and then some. Behind them dark eyes and them dreads that hid them told the story of man with sooooo much weight on his shoulders. But don’t get me wrong there were certain times when I side eyed his ass, BUT given the circumstances, I understood the moves he made 100%. Now the angst between he and Savvy was top her. He rightfully needed to get things squashed between his roadie before he could ever step to Savvy in the way that she needed him to do so. I will ALWAYS love a grumpy vs. sunshine trope.
Some of my favorite moments: - Savvy and cousin Michi’s bond. Both went through so much, but neither of them played behind one another. Baby, both were TTG! ❤️ 🤚🏽x2 - Savvy finally finding her voice and giving Kiko what she rightfully deserved. Kiko was never a friend! - The first time Savvy and Shabu met. 🥰 - One thing about Savvy, she stayed in some damn sneakers. 😂 - I enjoyed Titan, Pierre, and all of the background characters EXCEPT Relic, May, Kiko, Kelis (sorry, girl), etc. Lowkey, I really want Titan and Pierre to be my boyfriends. 👀🤭
I really don’t like reading books in a series, but this one is well worth the read so far. Shit, I guess … welcome to the fold, baby! I cannot wait to read the next book to see what’s going to happen next because leaving off with that cliffhanger? COUNT YOUR DAYS ANTOINETTE! 😫
“I’m tired of fighting with you about the small stuff. I just want the love.” “And that’s the realest shit you’ve said, Whoop. Me too.”
Wow. Shabu. Savvy. Michi. Titan. Really the whole fold. Like I can’t put into words how good this series is, and I felt like I was in a chokehold. Shabu’s realism and rudeness. Savvy’s sweet and spicy self. They were exactly what each other needed in their corner. Life had been hitting hard for Savvy and Michi, but both were determined to make it. Michi was the tough girl, but wanted love. And Titan was so patient, but persistent.
Oh! And let’s not forget about Savvy and Michi’s unbreakable bond. Like the care and protection they have for each other was so endearing. Also, I love that we got to see inside the Haitian culture through this series. These stories kept getting better and better. Can’t wait to read more this series and by this author.
Whew! BABYYYYY this book had me fighting for my emotional life! 😭
From the very first page, I was in it. This wasn't just a love story, it was a whole emotional experience. Savvy, our main girl, has been handed a life full of pain and loss, and I mean the kind that just doesn’t seem to let up. Her dad? Gone. Her mom? CHILE....you have to read it because that backstory had me stuck. She’s living with her aunt who is straight-up toxic, and it’s giving “can’t catch a break” vibes from the gate.
But let me tell you what kept her grounded: her cousin and bestie Michi, who stayed riding for her 💯, and her long-time boo Eric… although whew, Eric's light is dimming REAL bad, and it’s clear he’s not the same anymore. Then enters Shabu and baaaaaybe, this man is raw, fine, unfiltered, and exactly the kind of storm that Savvy didn’t know she needed.
From the first moment they met at the party, it was giving electric chemistry, but nothing with Shabu was going to come easy. The emotional rollercoaster that followed?? Ma’am. I needed a seatbelt and a therapist.
And don’t even get me started on Kiko... I just knew she was shady from the beginning, but she really showed her entire behind in this book. Every time she popped up, I was ready to throw my Kindle. And shoutout to Titan for the comic relief because I needed it in between wiping my tears and yelling at the screen like I was watching a movie.
Michi had me hollering with her realness. That girl was dropping gems and trying to keep Savvy’s eyes open, but whew love and trauma don’t mix well without healing, and this story put that truth front and center.
💭 Final Thoughts
This book was EVERYTHING! It gave me tears, laughs, heartbreak, betrayal, redemption, and heat. It hit every note it was supposed to. This author came out SWINGING with this one. And now that I’ve hit the end of book 1, I just know that book 2 is going to take the drama and emotions even further and you already know I’m diving straight in!
📚 Go read this. You will be ALL in. 🔥 10/10. No skips. No fillers.
Whoa, this is what I am talkn' about! Good writing from the beginning to end. If you are going to write a slow burn troupe, do it by giving the meat & potatoes storyline to keep the reader interested. There is so much to say I don't even know where to start. Should I start with the characters I didn't like such as Kiko the fake azz friend, or the disgraceful auntie who I would say needed her butt whopped but her low down molesting hubby was already doing that. Perhaps I should talk about Michi the loyal big cousin who had to endure so much as a child and make her own way because her momma didn't do what she was supposed to do and that was protect her. Nah let's talk about the stars Savvy & Shabu. Savvy just like her big cousin had to endure so much as child. There was absolutely no adult in her life that shielded her and wanted to protect her. Living off of morsels. In a relationship full of dreams that is only one-sided. But then she meets Shabu that hood dude that protects his loved ones at all cost. Instantly they are attracted and Shabu is able to see the scars that lie below Savvy but at the same time see her shine, her worth. What I want to know is who did that to Savvy? Was is Relic, Shabu brother? Cuz I see the cover of the 3rd book with a baby who has blue eyes. If my prediction is correct all hell is about to break loose! Onto book two, Shabu.
This book was phenomenal. I’m using not a person for character driven books but this to me was definitely more about the characters than anything else. Savvy had it the hard way, her mom killed herself after killing her rapist (which happened to be her uncle) and Savvy has been with Michelle her aunt and Mitchi her cousin unfortunately things don’t go well as Michelle hates Savvy for what her mothers done. She gets abused like no tomorrow and her cousin gets raped. They make a plan to leave and soon after she meets shabu. LOVEEE THESE CHARACTERSSSS. Fuck that bitch kiko I hope she dies in the next book. Does too much for niggas and never enough for her friends lame ass bitch. She deserve the ass whooping she got at the basketball game. WHOOOOOOPPP. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Man you did it again this book was so good. I knew kiko drugged Savvy and everyone knew something was off but didn’t say I also think Jessica was apart of Savvy being raped because of that call. But for some reason I feel like Relic might of been the one who raped her or someone Jessica got paid for letting it happen. I have so many questions. However I wouldn’t be having that baby . I just couldn’t do it plus it’s like a bad cycle so I hope the baby don’t make it.need part two asap. Because baby I know Shabu gonna fuck shit up when he find out.
Cousins I am rooting for cousins Savvy and Michi, while also yelling at them through book. Savvy is 17 and has lived through so much in those 17 years and her slightly older cousin Michi is not in a much better situation. But the cousins have made a pact to always have each others backs no matter what. But while being there for each other they also hold secrets that they think will make the other look different in each other's eyes. I found myself rooting for these to while also scolding them the entire time I was reading. The characters in this story are flawed. Some of them you will love and some of them you will love to hate.
Whew! This book was HEAVY!! I had to stop reading it for a while because it was so raw! I’m glad I picked it back up and stuck with it, because I grew to like the characters. Shabu grew to be my favorite. This book could easily be a damn movie. Kiko is a scandalous b🤬🤬ch !! She got what she deserved and I hope there’s more to come for her and her trash ass cousin Mya ! Also, I pray Michi bounce back! She endured a lot to make sure Savvy was protected.
I rate this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was a heavy read for me but it was worth it ! I can’t wait to start the next one.
What really did it for me was Savvy and her cousin relationship. Their relationship was everything. They was locked in for real ten toes no switching up, no leaving each other behind. Through all the trauma and bullshit life kept throwing at them they stayed solid and I loved seeing that kind of loyalty on the page.
Savvy and Shabu? I liked them but let's be clear he had me irritated at first. He was moving messy and I wasn't rocking with that at all. BUT once the truth came out I understood why he was wilding the way he was. I didn't excuse it but I got it. I appreciate that the author let him be flawed instead of trying to make him look perfect.
This book was heavy as hell. Every time Savvy started to see the light life said "nah not today" and knocked her right back down. It was painful to read at times but thats what made it feel real. What I loved most was seeing Shabu step up when things got serious. He didn't fold, didn't run, didn't disappear. He became her safe place when everything around her was falling apart and that meant something.
The plot had me thinking. I liked that the story made you connect the dots instead of spoon-feeding you everything. I was already peeping shit early on and putting the pieces together and when it started coming together I was like yeah... I knew it.
Savvy as a character was solid. She wasn't flashy, wasn't chasing money or status, and didn't move fake baby girl was just trying to survive out there in them streets! She loved hard, stayed loyal, and stayed genuine and that's why people gravitated toward her without her even trying.
And Relic (rolls eyes) Yeah... I'm not feeling him. AT ALL! He's giving straight menace right now but not the menace that we possibly could love but menace like a straight up shady individual. I know people are saying he grows on you later in the series but where I'm standing he got a LOT to prove.
Overall this book was raw, emotional, and messy in the most realistic way. It had me in my feelings, had me mad, had me rooting!! Can't wait to dive into book 2!!!
OH and Titan & Michi were sooooo cute! I really hope in book 2 they get they shit together... we will see!
Okay so I'll start by saying that I've never read something like this before so let's get into it. Also, Haitian representation 🇭🇹
So this is urban. We're in the city, people are living their lives the best they know how to and the slimy ones are of course, doing their slimy shenanigans. Savvy, our FMC, I will in fact go to war for her. She's at that really naive, gullible age, but then has been forced to mature and she's just such a strong gal. Anyone who starts beef with her, they're automatically wrong and she's always right. I love her down basically 💞
Level 2 angst because of all of the turmoil and heartaches!
Now our main man, Shabu...*eye roll* he's cool or whatever 🙄 idk he just annoys me low-key...
Also the smut 🥵 I literally mostly read stuff with smut so I'm familiar with the lines and the motions but this one... our author did a thing on this one. It got hot because of how things developed. There was tension and it was no more than about 2 or 2 ½ spicy scenes. So within those few moments the author managed to make them real spicy, I loved it!!!! Starting book 2 now🤩 so I fully recommend!
