The Sanctuary is the first book in Michael Taylor’s The Passage Between The Worlds series. Aimed at a younger audience, The Sanctuary is the perfect book to introduce younger readers to the delights of the fantasy genre.
Luke is a young man that is pulled, along with his girlfriend, into a battle between good and evil. Set in a parallel world that bridges between dimensions and different time periods, Luke finds himself in a place called The Sanctuary. Here he meets a variety of characters that include the witch Molly, faeries and the powerful leader of The Sanctuary Morgan.
Luke is trained to fight with swords and wands against powerful foes. He soon learns that the world is being threatened by an evil wizard Logan, who also happens to be Morgan’s twin brother. Not only that, they also learn that Logan has made powerful friends in his plan to destroy the world.
Meanwhile, Luke’s girlfriend Cissy finds herself the prisoner of the evil wizard and she will need all her wits to escape.
In The Sanctuary, Taylor writes an exciting and propulsive tale that plays with recognisable tropes. His characters are vivid and will delight younger readers.
Whilst the book is aimed at younger adults. It does contain some violence that may not be suitable for the younger readers; however, the violence is not gratuitous and is dealt with sensitively.
The plot itself trundles along at a nice pace and will keep readers entertained with all the twists and turns, and even I, a seasoned fantasy reader did not see some of the twists and turns of the story.
Filled with humour and magic, The Sanctuary is an adventure filled story that will hopefully introduce the next generation of fantasy readers to the genre.

This is such a fun read. There are plot twists galore, and tons of characters to cheer on. Oh and a complex villain who... Well I don't want to spoil it.

A touch of violence so probably 14+ to read it
