An intensely thrilling and terrifyingly nail-biting series, Last Light is a post-apocalyptic adventure from Justin Bell and Mike Kraus like you've never seen before. Taking the tropes of post-apocalyptic and simultaneously turning them on their head and masterfully playing to them, Justin & Mike deliver a heart-pounding series that will both excite and terrify you with every turn of the page. In this complete edition of Last Light, you get the entire series (Last Light, Cold Snap, Dark Void, Hard Road, Dead Wrong, Into the Fire, Slow Burn & Final Darkness) all in one package.
I really have been enjoying this genre and this particular writing duo over the past year. This was a different spin on the “end of the world” genre. This series had monsters that had been living underground for who knows how long. So not only are they battling the bad guys , they’ve got these “slicks” to deal with. Great cast of characters. Have a few favorites . Highly recommend if you’re fans of these two authors!
This series gets four stars because it’s fast action with surprises around every page. The central character sure gets beat up a lot and loses many of his comrades. Our hero and his family meet many seemingly insurmountable challenges to keep the reader in interested.
One thing that eventually dawned on me was the absence of profanity, Through eight books, I recall only one “damn” as the only example. Considering the vast majority of modern literature, I found this to be quite remarkable.
The reader with knowledge of the military and science will find much to criticize. These issues should not inhibit enjoyment of the storyline. It is, after all, a science fiction. The author ignores or disregards many of the sciences in favor of the development of the tale.
In spite of the “flaws,” I truly enjoyed this series, while ignoring my own criticisms. You should, too.
First, let me say that I loved/hated this series! I loved the story of hope…I loved the main characters…I loved the dog…I loved the sarcastic funnies. But! I hated that there was ALWAYS one bad, sit on the edge of your seat and don’t pee your pants, nerve wracking scene after another!!! I had to stop reading at times because I needed to rest!! But, I always couldn’t wait to rest up so I could dig back into what was happening next! Do not pick up this series to read unless you have the time to finish it…this included your rest breaks!
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, however, there are many times when it gets confusing or even downright irritating. There are several inconsistencies and several places where something “major” happened to one character and it was either ignored or in the next chapter/book it happened to a different character instead. Names change in several places, grammatical errors are abundant and formatting/editing is obviously nonexistent. If these errors were fixed, I could see this becoming a major movie or Television series. I sure would watch it.
Some inconsistencies throughout the books, Mike's rank was referred to several times as Lieutenant then Staff Sergeant at others, the sensitivity of the monsters' skin to light. Also the research and depicting of military ranks, weapons, capabilities were ridiculous to a veteran or active duty military. I know, I know, I'm being petty, but veterans would agree. I really did enjoy the series but if you're a veteran be prepared to be triggered LOL
I like this book. It was interesting. The storyline is a touch of science fiction and a touch of fantasy. The creature aspect of the story is what gave it a touch of fantasy. I wonder if we will see more of the creatures in later stories. I like the idea of utility Tron as well. This author has a great imagination. this story took apocalyptic to a whole new level.
Loved these books full of danger, horror, shock and love a great combination of fights for survival and family and friendships that will last a lifetime. Loved these books and now left wanting more . Did the slicks all die off? Did the country get rebuilt, if so how and did this group of people all stay together or go their separate ways. I could read these forever got so into these books and the characters in them that it almost felt real.
When you call teases books a thriller you are 100% right i have been reading for days so lost in the story I never wanted it to end. But I will be looking for more of Justin's books. I am almost 79 years old and have lots of time to read.Reading this series put a thrill back in my life thank you Justin and Mike I have also been reading Mike book for many years now.
Loved the story & the characters ... they seemed like people I know & the book brought me into their lives. The only problem (which is why the books got a 4-star rating) is problems with grammar, punctuation, word usage & people's names changing between books. Other than those issues great reading!
These books are well written with an excellent story line. They are adequate in length and very reasonable in price. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. The first book starts out with a bang and goes that way thru all eight books. I highly recommend this series to anyone that likes apocalyptic survival thrillers.
This book held my attention. I didn't want to put it away, I just wanted to get to what happened next. I even cried at points. It's an eye opener and thriller. I works recommend to friends and family. A few hiccups in print, but overall was able to read thru without heditation.
Wow. What a ride. This series took off running and never let up. High stakes, adrenaline pumping, non stop action. What more could you ask for. All eight books were superb. I love this genre and the creature feature addition gave it an extra dimension. Would highly recommend.
I was enjoying the books a lot ! At one time I thought oh no that's impossible, but who am I to say how people react. The ending seamed to be predictable, but then a twist, I like this style of writing. Well done for keeping me entertained for quite some time. It's a busy time for me so I couldn't read as often as I would have liked.
Strong women kicking ass alongside friends & neighbors! These characters have 9+ lives… amazing, feeling the tension amongst the pages, almost afraid of swiping to next page, knowing someone was sure to die or get mangled up by the vicious “slicks”!
Wow, what a struggle but our hero's made it for the most part! One final book to this epic tale. I can't wait to see how this ends, gonna be more struggles, but victory is on the horizion, bringing a whole nation back to civilazation. But what a nation this one has been, is a worthy goal.
These eight books have fast paced plots and fascinating characters. I recommend these books to readers that enjoy learning more about post Apocalypse and don't mind lots of blood.
A different take on a posts apocalyptic story. The characters had flaws which worked well into there place in the book without just inserting them as all perfect soldiers or survivors.
Justin Bell has a wicked imagination of how the world ends. His characters are vivid and gritty, with a lot of surprises. Roll on Bell ,and keep the pen writing.
This story was well written, fast paced with well developed characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get deeply involved in a story and its characters.
Characters can get tangled up but you did a good Job. I was a bit upset over the girls being left to fend for selves but Mikes group made up .We don’t have to like everything about others to work together.
I REALLY enjoyed this series. I can not WAIT for another story or two to be written. The OK Characters to go WEST and share their knowledge and skills with more Americans.
Awesome storyline, continually fast paced and wicked
A really awesome book. What an imagination to develop these slicks and bring them to life in the multi part stories. A genuinely interesting and captivating read from start to end.
This series kept my attention all the way through. Hard to put down and go to work! Complex characters that draw you into the story despite no idea of the weaponry cited!
Was relieved to get to the end. The “slicks” stretched credulity, and having them drop from trees was laughable. On the whole, Mary Beth chapters were irrelevant and didn’t advance the plot, and Glory was a total pain.
This series was a real attention holder. It had the ability to make you feel for the good guys and dislike the bad. I personally had a hard time putting it down. I would definitely recommend this book to any apocalypse fan.
I enjoyed the structure of these stories how they all were different but how they all interacted pushing the reader to want to know what was going to happen next. Good set of books.
