An enigmatic message from an old school friend takes Phil to Blackpool where he must walk the night-time promenade, night after night, and await a meeting and an explanation. During the dark nights of covid lockdown, however, danger lurks round every corner and, step by step, Phil is drawn into a terrifying nightmare world of conspiracy and crime where he can trust nobody, not even his one-time friend. And on that trust, and the choices he makes, many lives will depend.

I've been waiting so long for another Phil Tyler thriller (at least it feels like I have), and this fourth installment does not disappoint. It perfectly bookends Book 1 in that they're both elegiac, but only as an undercurrent to the humor and suspense. As you're actually reading the book, you're excited, you're tense, you're laughing at the witty repartee of our reluctant, self-deprecating hero; but by the end you'd swear you just read a heart-rending drama judging by the feelings that sneakily bubble up. It's a lot of tones to juggle, a difficult highwire act, but it all seems effortless in Litherland's hands. After every Phil Tyler novel I find myself thinking, "this one is the best yet," so I guess the only thing to do is reread them and settle the matter once and for all.

Well worth the read...

Phil Tyler is the exception to Bourne and Bond. An ordinary guy thrown into extraordinary circumstances. He isn't cut out to be a hero nor does he want to be one. But he is tenacious and believes in doing good even when it is uncomfortable. The quirky descriptions and back and forth memories lighten the angst. I do have a bone to pick with the author, and it will be a long time before I can forgive him... he killed off one of the most cantankerous and endearing people ever. Not nice at all Mr. Litherland!
