Stones & Curses #2

Soul Marked: Stones & Curses Series Book 2

Rate this book
Oh, hey. Nora here.

Just over here trying to process everything I’ve learned lately—the least of it being that magic is real, and I’m the last in a long line of practically extinct jinn.

Me? Magic? What?

You might be wondering why all of that isn’t taking center stage in my currently mind-blown state. Well… I’ve got bigger problems.

Namely, I trusted the wrong person.

We’ve all been there, right? But of course, when I do it, I wake up not knowing where I am or how I got there. To top it off, something isn’t quite right with me. I’m off. But maybe that’s just what happens when your heart is splintered into a million tiny pieces.

Whatever the case, I’m done with all the half-truths and secrets. It’s time for me to figure out why everyone seems to know more about me than I do. Why the entire magical world is watching every move I make with bated breath.

But most of all, I’m going to find out why he did this to me. And then I might just make him pay with the one thing that’s ripe for my taking…

His soul.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Omg another 5 star read for lissa bolts.
Absolutely blown away. Who knew Rafe could get sweeter and Nora more badass than she already was. Absolutely loved diving back into this magical world and seeing Nora grow more confident in her new found powers. I hope everything is ok with Callie and she can rebuild her pack. And what is going on with Baily? I hope Cora and Bailey are ok. An amazing read. Loved it from start to finish.

Absolutely riveting!

Soul Marked, the second book in the Stones and Curses series by Lissa Bolts was absolutely riveting!!! If you thought the first book in the series was fantastic you haven’t seen anything yet! With one endless adventure after another this story is jam packed with tons of action, drama, betrayal and oh man the hidden tensions between Rafe and Nora was absolute perfection! I can’t wait for the next story and for the conclusion of this series and what it means for all the Jinn and especially Coral and Bae!

oopsie! I guess you expected this review

The author Thad purposely written two cliffhanger endings. I personally hate cliff hanger endings but more than that. I detest authors who say “oopsie! Guess that was worse than the last one, guess I will hear about it in the reviews!” Not an exact quote but pretty close. Thank you for letting your readers hear exactly what you think of us. You do not appreciate us, and see us as things to manipulate. Well I don’t like that. So I’m only one person, but I will never read another thing you write, ever. Try not to piss off your fan base. Oopsie! Too late

I loved the first book; It had its flaws but I loved the premise and I needed to know what happened next.

At about the 70/80% mark, after a Wraith attack, she wakes up in a cell to find that the person who she should’ve been wary of (based on the fact that people had warned her away from him and a recent betrayal at the start of the book from someone else) had locked her in a dungeon with not even a spare blanket.

I’d been noting my issues with this book but at this point the straw indeed broke the camel’s back. I saw red.
There was no resolve to fight her way out of the imprisonment? She just sat there like, sleeping, waking up and eating whatever they gave her when they remembered she was down there. No thoughts about being poisoned to be made compliant? No anger about the injustice of it all? No thoughts about the people whose destinies were tied to her soul, about those who died for her, about the enemies she had or how to break free from the crappy dungeon. Nothing. She just sat there with inane thoughts running through her empty head. As if someone who pretended for years to be a father figure in order to use and betray you would suddenly default because you said some pretty words.
How silly. How naive. How very stupid.
Not one iota of character development and this is the second book. Only inappropriate jokes and ill timed pop culture references.

“Before me, a large, steaming pool was cut into the floor. The water was an opaque blue. Rose petals floated on the surface. Honestly, I’d probably really appreciate this whole setup if I wasn’t about to die.”
Her world is about to end along with all the lives tied to her and this is the thought going through her head? I’m disgusted. It gets even worse.
Alas, the plot tried to save her by disintegrating her captors yet instead of switching to her shadow form and running away, she walks right back into the room where the ritual is meant to hold. Like a lamb to the slaughterhouse.

I have so many bones to pick with the MMC, starting with the pronunciation of his name. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Forcing the FMC into a soul bond even for good reasons will never be okay.
No angst. No chemistry. Just insta love/crush from the FMC meanwhile he was using her. Also, what kind of nickname is “Knocks” 😔
The FMC magically straightens their twisted soul bond at the verge of death? Nah I’m not buying it.

Then the only person who loved the FMC for who she was disappeared with no explanation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the author makes her Claire or Claire’s long lost daughter. I won’t be there to see it.

So much was mentioned and then abandoned. The book left me with more questions than answers. Awkward dialogue. The rushed love confession at the end? No.
I hope to never come across something like this again. Thanks.

Soul Marked is the second book in the urban fantasy series Stones & Curses. In the first book, Wish Marked, Nora is cursed with making wishes really come true. The problem is that she has no control over what wishes are granted (they usually aren't nice ones ) and when she has reached 100 wishes granted she dies!

It was wonderful to connect with Nora, Bailey her dog and the charismatic Rafe again as their story continued. In this book Nora along with the reader discovers more about the magical world she has been thrust into. The history of the curse and of the Jjin are revealed in part, we meet new and sometimes dangerous characters and reunite with some familiar ones.

This book is full of magic, danger, violence, betrayal, distrust, mystery and a little bit of romance. I enjoyed the first book and this one was more than I could have hoped for. The situations Nora finds herself in are more stressful and dangerous. She is growing as a Jjin and discovering her power and how to control it. She is a kick-ass female character who has always had to survive own her own and continues to fend for herself. She is a stubborn creature who tends to make some bad decisions that lead to bad situations, but if she choose the easy path, that would be a boring story.
The World building in this story is tremendous. It is complex with the different magical groups and realms, but is handle well so that it not confusing. The pace of this book has been ramped up and is a story that you just need to read the next chapter to see what happens and then just one more. I very easily read this in 2 days and even choose to forgo Netflix at night to finish it.

The author once again left us with a cliffhanger of an ending that just needs to continue. She has introduced the next installment well as we ponder over the situation and the new characters encountered in this book. My biggest question is What has happened to Nora's friend Jess?

If you like fierce female characters with good intentions, action, adventure, danger, magic, treachery and a little bit of romance this series is for you. I once again am looking forward to the next book in the series and keen to read more of this author's books.

So if you thought the last cliffhanger was bad, wait till this one 🤣.

Nora finally gets access to her powers and seems to not be cursed anymore, but things go sideways with what Rafe planned so she's still all kinds of unlucky because she doesn't have access to everything. But that kind of leads her to rely on everyone else and from that we get even more world building as she realizes how much of the world she was blind to before she was truly a Jinn. We even get a little glimpse as to more backstory for the curse's origin.

I really love everyone who is supposed to be a side character. Selma, Cal, Bailey, Cora, some others, they are so awesome and I want them to have their own short stories or full length so I can read even more about them 😭. We learned some new things about them and some of them got more abilities than originally thought.

Okay Nora is definitely missing some things she gained in the first book but she's still just as great. She kinda fumbles a bit through her new abilities, but it leads to some funny scenes are her need to interact with everyone else. Her new abilities are interesting and I can't wait to see the extent of them because we get a pissed Nora and some point and I love it!!! She also has a love hate relationship with Rafe even more now and it's justified but dam did I want someone to completely explain everything because they did keep some things from each other that would have made them be together sooner. But she needed to go on the adventure in her win with her guard dog so it was needed. Even though Rafe isn't in all of the book, I still love the moments he does show up, he's more angsty and still as protective and I hope he gets as much screen time in the next one.

I really loved this book and there are so many things I really hope get resolved in the next one and really can't wait for Nora to use all the power she has available.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Steam: A kiss that stole the show! (And almost killed half of the jinn population)
Genre: Romantic Fantasy

Urban Fantasy: Druids, Witches, Werewolves, Magic and more!
Enemies to Lovers
Slow burn
Bad ass heroine
That cliffhanger!

This book is unputdownable! Is that a word? I’m going with it either way. Nora’s story is absolutely gripping and I was both wishing to know it all in one go while hoping it will never end. Just like the first book in the series of Stones & Curses, I was kept hanging on every word.

Who can she trust, when the whole world is after her power? The uncertainty was so well portrayed I was doubting my own opinions about some of the characters. I refused to believe Rafe was on the dark side, but his actions were so gray that it muffled any kind of coherent thinking. And Jack? We don’t know a whole lot about him, but Nora knows him for years and years. With a rift between those two from the very beginning, their hidden motivations kept me at the edge of my seat.

With more dangers than in the first book, Soul Marked slowly kills you from the inside. Nora has no control over her newly discovered powers whatsoever, but is a beacon to a world full of powerful enemies she never even knew existed. Not trusting Rafe, (I wouldn’t either after what he did to her and his nonexistent explanations!), she sets out alone and has to survive through all of it on her own. And while there are others sympathetic to her cause, nobody can truly help her. Many die simply by being on her side! We still don’t know what happened to Cora (the kelpie) and Bailey (her german shepherd) and it is killing me. That’s all I’m able to say without spoiling all of the plot.

You’ve got to read this series, you really do. And now I am off to reading the third book, because I NEED to! So, so bad!

Warning: Spoilers

If there's one I absolutely love about Lissa's books are the strong and funny heroines, the grumpy and protective guys, and the universe where magical creatures feel as real as you and me. It's safe to say, that like Wish Marked, Soul Marked made me just as excited, sad, and glaring at that cliffhanger. (But really, those cliffhangers do their job and do it well!)

In Soul Marked, Nora Black continues to be the same brutally honest, funny, and just trying to live a somewhat normal life kind of girl. She's felt betrayed, lost, and coming to terms with the fact that her jinn magic is like the strongest of the strongest. So, no pressure on her end, right? I really enjoyed reading more of her adventures, and seeing her explore the magical world on her own. Learning everything that there is, getting into the wrong sorts of trouble, uncovering secrets, and being with her dog, Bailey along the way. With Rafe, though, it was kind of funny to see her battling her emotions when it came to him, like a love-hate situation, but we all know how she really feels about him. And how he feels for her.

Did I expect the ending? Nope. Not at all. It was suspenseful, mysterious, and had me on the edge of my seat. Did I stare at my kindle after I finished the book absorbing every bit of the story and wanting to read more? Yes, I did.

I honestly can't wait for what Lissa has in store for Nora and Rafe, and how yet another magical series will come to an end.

I am oh so grateful to the author for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved Soul Marked, and can’t wait for more people to read it! 10/10 would recommend and please, I cannot wait for the next book!!

Thank you to Lissa Bolts for providing me with a digital copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I was so excited to read this book after I devoured Wish Marked earlier this month and it did not disappoint! 🙌🏽 Soul Marked was as exciting and pulse-spiking as it’s predecessor. We somehow explored even more of the world that’s so carefully crafted here. I need to visit this magical book shop ASAP. We learn so much more about Nora’s powers in this installment! I love that we’re unveiling little bits of lore as we move along in the story.
-
And can we talk about the romance?! No spoilers, but I was an emotional wreck. 💀 We don’t get to spend as much time with Rafe as I expected to, but it still works somehow. I spent the entire time wanting to push them together. Now kith! 😂
-
We got another cliffhanger warning and I was still knocked on my ass at the end. When will I learn?! Lissa, WHY. But more importantly, please never stop. 😂 I can’t wait to see what happens next.

The Stones & Curses series is one of my favorite urban fantasies to date. It never slows down and always comes at you with something new. These pages are ripe with fantasy, adventure, and a slow burn, begrudging romance.

I love Lissa Bolts’ books and so I took up book 2 as soon as the final one was out coz I intend to binge til the end of the trilogy. Had to go back to the end of book 1 to refresh, and…. I oved it!

After a whale of a cliffhanger (yes, Lissa, everybody was sore about it) in book 1 Ms Nora Black finds herself kindapped to a world of assholes and misbehaving weather with a tween casually referring to her as queenie. Rafe is still the king of keeping shit to himself and Nora is pissed at him for abducting her.

Unputdownable! I immensely enjoyed the beat, the story, the characters, even the cusswords. I mean - son of a lady dog, angel-faced demon spawn and holy sea monkeys. Lol. Nora is a headstrong kickass coming into her powers via lots of mishaps and Rafe - I wanted to hit him over the head with a pan a few times for not telling her things. Loved Cora, the kelpie familiar and the dog, man, that was dark. The twists, the turns, the dry self-deprecating humour, the betrayals - yum! Kept me turning the pages and I read book 2 in a few hours. Yes, Lissa, that’s payback for you writing it for months. Keep’em coming, on to book 3 tonight.

“/…/ Why would I want to stay here with you?” “Because we’ve got cake,” came a stage whisper from the bushes. /…/ What was I getting myself into? “I want my questions answered.” I folded my arms. “And I want cake.”

If you like Rachel Rener’s Inked series, you’ll love this one. Recommended for lovers of kickass heroines in NA paranormal fantasy, the jinn community and dry NYC humour.

I ADORED book 1 in this series, 𝘞𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥, and when Lissa approached me (by the way I am so thankful for you doing that) I jumped and I mean JUMPED at the opportunity too read this amazing book, because that cliffy from the last book had me needing more.

And than Lissa does the same thing again and now I want book 3 like right now. 😂 All jokes aside I really loved this book. Read it in a day. It was that good that I just couldn't stop reading until I got to the last page. Also, I really love books that have those little special artwork at the begining of each chapter and this one had the cutest ones.

So, if you like fierce FMC's with hearts of gold, books with the adventures that will have you at the edge of your seat, with a dash of swoony romance, and enough mind-blowing treachery to leave you wondering what in the world just happened, this is the PERFECT series for you.

Good

WARNING! CLIFFHANGER! This one is a huge one, so if you don’t care for them, hold off a bit and read when the next book is out. Consider yourself warned!

Picking up from where book one ends, Nora awakens in a Jinn pocket dimension where Rafe has taken her, and where she finds out exactly what Rafe has been up to…
The world she has suddenly been exposed to is filled with dangers, and it’s not long before Nora finds herself in trouble, fighting forces she never realized existed, and desperately trying to survive…

This one builds up from a relatively slow start and ends up with a mighty bang. There is also a long left hanging at the end of the book, so many unanswered questions, and a few lives in danger.
The book itself was engrossing, and well written with several surprises along the way. Romance is a slow burning type, and there isn’t really time for much progression there, as Nora and Rafe’s world becomes darker and more dangerous.
With some tear jerking moments, and a few heart rending losses, this is a thoroughly entertaining story, with more to come… and I look forward to a resolution for that enormous cliffhanger (hopefully soon!).

An awesome second installment

My girl, Lissa, does it again (x6 and counting!) and hits it out of the park with this second installment of her new Stones & Curses series. I’m officially hooked!

The growthhhhh and continued world building, you guys!! We find out so much in this one, but the mystery and “have to know what happens next” still stands strong. Thank God for great authors that know how to tell a story! 🙌

Nora, our sassy, hilarious heroin with a heart of gold, really comes into her own throughout this book. And all of the angsty sizzle between her and my new book boyfriend is top notch… not over-the-top, though. This is a great blend of plot-line, slow burn, adventure, intrigue, heart, and awesome side characters, IMO.

Alert* to all you semi-weirdos out there that don’t like the angst of an awesome cliffhanger like I do, I don’t understand you… BUT, although this story has an incredibly intense last-half and does end in a cliffy, it’s not as big of a curve-ball as Lissa has thrown at us before, so enjoy it, it’s what has all of us out there coming back for more (admit it!), and it’s crafted very well.

My thoughts:
Of course, Lissa Bolts did it again. And this time with a warning of the cliffhanger. Even though she warned us, the ending is still unexpected. The plot in this 2nd book is a great introduction and preparing Nora for what will be ahead in book 3 (I assume).
I always love Nora and her sarcastic but humorous personality. The author did a great job of building Nora’s character and I was so attached to the story. It made me frustrated with Nora’s lack of confidence in herself which means that the author succeed in making me emotionally involved in the story. I like how the author made Nora’s adventure more realistic. Realistic in the sense that even if you have power, it doesn’t mean that you will always win the fight. That is overnight, you are strong and brave and magically know everything. Nope! That is not what the author did. Nora is learning her power slowly and in a hard way.
I still believe that Netflix should consider producing this story into a film. This is one of those stories that I read and wonder what the setting will look like if it is in a movie.
I can’t wait for the 3rd book and hopefully, it will not take long to release.

I don’t know how you keep doing this but, while on vacation visiting family (!!!), I devoured Soul Marked in a day once I got a chance to sit down 😂 the witty, fun, fast paced environment of the first book carried over (and some) into the second book. Watching Nora and Rafe’s relationship and Nora growing into her power was beautifully done and I absolutely applaud you.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Thank you SO much for giving me the opportunity to read Soul Marked as an ARC and I can’t wait to read book 3! I’m itching for it already 😂

I absolutely loved Nora and her snarky attitude. She is exploring her newfound abilities, while trying to juggle so many things. I can relate! As the paranormal world begins to show itself to hee, she has to find out who it is she can really trust in this new life of hers. She's basically the fumbling and nerdy girl in us all, and I loved watching her become a veritable badass.

Rafe... What are we going to do with you? First I like you, then I hate you, now I'm so torn between loving you and wanting to murder you, it's unreal. No wonder Nora blocked his calls! He has some super sweet moments of semi-redemption, but I hope Nora makes him grovel.

This is such a slow burn! Agony! I love it so much though! If you're ready to fall in love with the girl who didn't think she'd get this far, but is still rocking it, look no farther than Nora Black!

After the cliffy in book one I couldn’t wait to jump into book two! This book definitely gives us answers to questions from book one. We find out more about the jinn, the curse and more of the magical dynamic that’s happening in the book. We also find out why Rafe did what he did at the end of book one. I found myself a little frustrated with Nora. She complained because she didn’t understand or know what was going on, but then someone would fill her in or give her information, and she wouldn’t believe them or she would brush them off. Her naïveté started to grate on my nerves a bit, but she finally got it together by the end. I can’t wait to see her and Rafe work together to bring down the baddies in the next book. This was definitely a great follow up to book one, and a great YA fantasy read.

I have said it before I think this series should be a movie. I would love to see everything unfold on screen. When I think of Cora the familiar I get she so ugly she is cute vibes, like Dobby from Harry Potter. My favorite characters area toss up between Callie and Nora. I love the way Callie thinks and her alpha energy with her pack. As for Nora one minute I am agreeing with her actions and the next I’m thinking I would’ve done things differently. Over all she has a kind heart, she just wants her life back. I was lucky enough to be able to read both books back to back and would recommend anyone to grab them both. Lissa Bolts is easily one of my top three favorite authors. I was lucky enough to grab a ARC of this book, but in no way does this change my review. If you love witches, wolves, vampires and magic you will love this book.

I love the stories Lissa puts together. Her characters are written beautifully and there’s always a wide variety. The animals brought into the story even have fantastic personalities.

Nora continues to be a fantastically independent and snarky FMC and I just love how she responds to all she goes through. Independent and sometimes brash, she still shows deep emotions. Rafe continues to be a very strong personality and never falters from his beliefs even if it could cost him everything.

Overall, I was so hooked and fascinated by this book that I got halfway through it in one night. If I hadn’t been so tired, I would have finished it that night. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and am a devout Lissa Bolts reader and fan!

I can’t remember ever reading a book (or series) where the story seemed to flow so organically. The characters are different and fascinating. The writing is very well done, and keeps me wanting to read. I’ve had trouble putting the book down. Nora is young, sweet, kind-hearted and very naive. And she’s new to magic. It’s as if she’s been thrown into the deep end of the pool and told to swim, having no lessons. This story is relatable, in a way, because I’ve felt like I don’t know how the world works sometimes, and life happens to me instead of me directing my own life. There have been times where I’ve thought that if I had magic, that life would be easier. This book has convinced me that probably wouldn’t be the case.

I just love Nora’s sass! She’s spunky and vulnerable and although not human, she’s human. Ha if that makes sense. Uncovering this world of jinn and fae and other creatures, which are intermixed with humans, is just fun reading. I’m excited to see where this story goes, and I really want to know more about Jess.

I also LOVE Cora and Bailey. The inclusion of a dog and kelpie adds a personal level to this. And the surprises with how Lissa connects these characters to Nora is fun and slightly unexpected.

I’m starting to not dislike Rafe as much, even though some of his actions are questionable. I still think there’s more to his story that is going to surprise us in book 3.

👎🏻 Turn Offs
Cliffhanger. Again. *eye roll* That eye roll is with love, but how long do I have to wait to read the next book? Ha ha, just keep writing, Lissa!

👵🏻 Safe to talk about with Grandma?
Yes. There is some language, but no f words. The romance is there, but nothing graphic. There are action scenes, but again, nothing I wouldn’t worry about telling Gram about. I really want my teenager to read these, but it’s getting her to try fantasy that’s the hard part.

I had the opportunity to ARC read this one and I enjoyed it so much.

Nora is the perfect FMC. She does things her way but she still is able to have show how she feels. Any time there is a strong FMC I am going to recommend it and the author does an amazing job with Nora, well really all the characters.

The back and forth with Nora and Rafe keeps things interesting. Rafe is just as determined as Nora which make for a fun read.

I can’t wait to see what happens next with them. This is the second book so make sure you go read Wish Marked if you haven’t already. Definitely won’t be disappointed.

I didn't know whether to give it a 3 or 4. I went with 4 stars because I did enjoy the story and adventure overall and there were some fun parts to read. I liked her familiars and the new things she learned. However I was a little upset about the fact that the main character was practically useless the entire book. Anytime she seemed like she was making progress with her powers or jinn-ness she would backslide and could barely take care of herself. That ending was super shocking though and I will definitely need to read the third book. I have hope for her progress now and we need to see some reveeeenge.

I’ve been in a bit of a book slump waiting for sequels to come out, and this series has completely satisfied my craving. I will say that Nora did drive me a bit crazy in this one - she had literally no idea what she was doing, but was so stubborn she left the relative safety of Rafe’s home and went from bad to worse situations, because she couldn’t get her sh*t together. There were some moments where I was like “really Nora?” And felt like she was maybe falling into the TSTL category, but she rode the razor edge and by the end I was back on board. I’m hoping she makes better choices in the next one.

I absolutely loved Wish Marked, so when Lissa Bolts asked me to be an ARC reader for Soul Marked, I was thrilled!

This book did not disappoint! Nora was just as sarcastic as in the first book, and trouble was still drawn to her. I loved the twists and turns that Bolts included in this story. It was so well-thought-out and such a fun read!

Rafe and Nora still had trouble with communication, but it's just part of their characters. They're both a little headstrong.

The worst part of this book was that it ended, and I NEED more! I cannot wait to see what Bolts has in store for us next.

I cannot express how excited I was when I received the ARC for this story. After the super exciting cliffhanger at the end of the first book I was on pins and needles waiting for this one! I absolutely love Nora and Rafe!! There are so many times when reading this that I laughed out loud. Nora has the perfect sarcastic personality that I love to read. I highly recommend this story for all lovers of fantasy or paranormal stories. The world building from book one was so good and this story keeps the excitement rolling. I can not wait for the next one (again lol)!

4.5 ⭐️

This book.... and this cliffhanger of an ending!

Nora is such a great character. She's sarcastic, hilarious and kickers. Rafe just makes my heart all fluttery 😍

This sequel was so good!! I couldn't put it down. There was more world-building, more magic-building, more plot twists and more reveals. I highly recommend this series if you love a funny kickass FMC, a sexy my heart skips a beat thinking of him MMC, and djinn, werewolves, vampires, druids; all things fantasy and magic. This book is a great quick fun read.

“From day one, I knew you were going to wreak havoc on my world”

I really really enjoyed Wish Marked, and then I started Soul Marked and was HOOKED! This book continues to follow Nora as she maneuvers life after her curse being broken. There are so many ups and downs, friends and foes, a little love and some hate thrown in there too.

Lissa is the queen of cliffhangers! I can’t WAIT to read the next one. I absolutely need to know what happens with the Jinn, Nora, Rafe, Bailey, Jess, Cora, and everyone else!

* I received this as an ARC by the author for my honest review *
