4.75🌟 It took me a little over two years, but I finally finished reading all of the poems in this HUGE collection. Surprisingly, this is the absolute best collection of poems I've ever come across. I've read (or tried to read) many poetry collections with very little luck. I could not find a particular poet's works that I really loved.
But, in this book, I have at least 50 poems (or more!) bookmarked as favorites. It blows my mind! The fact that it was published in 1941 makes a lot of sense because that's my ultimate time period choice for cozy books (if that makes any sense).
The fact that these poems are supposed to "touch the heart" definitely increased the chances of me connecting with the entries. I think being a sensitive and empathic person sometimes makes poetry a little harder to read because they make any tones of negativity or sadness feel so much stronger. I really enjoy a lighthearted poem with hope, inspiration, or comfort.
If you are someone who wants to love poetry (like me!), but you haven't had any luck finding poetry to connect to and love, this is absolutely the book to try. I found mine for a few dollars at a local thrift shop, but I believe there are both hardcover, paperback and Kindle versions available.
I really loved this book!
P.S. I'll also be taking note of any poems that are written by the same person so I can update this review with names in the future.
This collection of touching poems has inspired me throughout my life. I have read it from cover to cover. Each poem is so moving and inspiring and can be used to motivate you through and time or event in your life, both good and bad. They are all still relatable no matter how old they are. Definitely the top of my favorite poetry collections list. Love it!
another poetry book i’ve read recently. this book i thrifted (only $2 !!) and it truthfully felt like i found lost treasure. poetry is definitely one of my favorite styles of literature, and i love finding books that are just a collection of a bunch of different poems by some of the greatest of all time.
Excellent collection of uplifting verse! Takes awhile to read when you just read a bit here and there, but so worthwhile. Great for daily devotional type reading.
It's a nice collection, though it can wax didactic. Many poems can appear very naive; just think happy thoughts, and you'll be happy! Oh, if we were all happy and peaceful, the world would be a better place. Things like that. The introduction says that we live in a world where cynicism is the norm, that if you have any kind of sentiment or faith, you're seen as childish. Thinking of that, it seems like I'm holding these virtues against the collection… but while I do value faith in humanity and the beauty of a pure thought, I had too many moments of "but life isn't that simple."
Too sentimental for me? Maybe. But it's a good book for someone who is a layman of poetry.
I love this poetry book. I happened upon it when I was browsing at the bookstore one day. I didn't realize what a treasure it would be. I'm so glad I have it.
Most of the poetry is easy to read, thought provoking, and inspiring. It's not a book of long poems; but it does have a lot of well-known poetry in it.
If you can find a copy, I recommend it. It's a great book to reference now and again. I did read it cover to cover the first time. Then I highlighted my favorites so I could read them again.
This is an anthology of light poetry on nearly every subject of interest. Everyone should find something in this book -- if you are a layman of poetry.
This is a collection of poems by various poets about life, happiness, faith, and other topics. There is something for everyone here and all are inspirational.
