Volume 28: Jonouchi encourages Yugi to attack him directly with Gilfer, bringing him down to 400 LP. He sends Legendary Fisherman after Kaiba to bait Ring of Destruction, so he can trigger Graverobber to use Marik's Spell of Pain to defeat Marik. Kaiba attacks Jonouchi directly, ending the game to determine matchups: Jonouchi vs. Marik, Kaiba vs. Yugi. Marik launches a Shadow Game. Marik baits Jonouchi into attacking Helpoemer so he can force Jonouchi to lose a card from his Hand every turn. Marik gets a combo with Coffin Seller, burning Jonouchi for 700 LP every time Helpoemer takes a card. Helpoemer takes Jinzo, but Jonouchi uses Question to Special Summon him back. Marik summons Lava Golem to Jonouchi's Field, sacrificing Jinzo and Baby Dragon, setting up another 700 LP burn after Jinzo destroyed Coffin Seller. Jonouchi stops Lava Golem by sacrificing him to summon Gilford the Lightning. Marik activates Nightmare Mirror to block Gilford's attack and discard Ra so he can Special Summon it in Phoenix Mode via Monster Reborn. Ra incinerates Gilford with its third power (a ripoff of Obelisk?) and the pain of the burn makes Jonouchi pass out before he can attack directly with Gearfried. Jonouchi seemingly dies, but the Millennium Tauk shows Yugi a future Duel between Yugi and Jonouchi. Volume end.

Volume 29: Yugi vs. Kaiba begins. Kaiba uses Soul Exchange and Enemy Controller to almost summon Obelisk but Yugi blocks it with Lightforce Sword. Kaiba uses Voice of the Heavens to take Osiris from Yugi's Deck, but Yugi's Exchange brings it back to his Hand. Kaiba gets out XYZ Dragon Cannon. Yugi gets King's Knight, Queen's Knight, and Jack's Knight, to sacrifice for Osiris. Kaiba gets out Obelisk. Yugi uses Pot of Greed to raise Osiris's ATK, but Kaiba uses Life Shaver to lower it to match Obelisk's. The Gods attack each other, triggering a light of memory for the Pharaoh and the Priest. The Pharaoh and Priest battle with Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon, respectively, so the boys summon the same in the present. Kaiba uses Monster Reborn on Obelisk to prevent Dark Magician from killing Lord of D., then uses Flute of Summoning Dragon to get his other two Dragons on the board. Volume end.

Volume 30: Yugi Special Summons Red-Eyes Black Dragon because of Flute of Summoning Dragon (which... isn't how that works...). Kaiba attacks, Yugi uses Magical Cylinder to deflect a Burst Stream at Lord of D., then Spellbinding Circle lowers a Blue-Eyes's ATK so Red-Eyes can kill it. Jonouchi starts to wake up because Yugi is using his cherished card. Kaiba uses Final Attack Orders so both Players choose three cards from their Deck and discard everything else. Kaiba uses Monster Reborn on a Blue-Eyes and Polymerization to make Ultimate Dragon. Yugi uses Double Spell to copy those cards, revive Buster Blader, and fuse him with Dark Magician into Dark Paladin. Kaiba attacks, but Yugi uses De-Fusion to split Ultimate Dragon (therefore increasing Dark Paladin's ATK) and plays Diffusion Wave Motion to attack all Blue-Eyes at once, winning the Duel and gaining Obelisk. Yugi and Ishizu separately tell Kaiba about the Power of Friendship. Kaiba gives Yugi Devil's Sanctuary as a gamble to test the Power of Friendship. Yugi vs. Marik begins, a Shadow Game where the base forms of Yugi and Marik are put as sacrifices tied to the Dark forms' LP. Marik discards Ra but Yugi uses Exchange to steal Monster Reborn. Yugi summons Osiris, but Marik plays Revival of the Dark to use Monster Reborn and bring out Ra in Phoenix Mode. Ra's third Effect kills Osiris. Marik uses Zombie's Jewel to get Monster Reborn back, so he could play Phoenix Mode in the future. Yugi prepares to draw. Volume end.

****

This was a good book that did well in developing it's characters, especially Kaiba and Jonouchi. Yet I love how Kaiba shows more to his character here, such as finally recognizing Jonouchi as a duelist yet I wish that they kept Ishizu's moment at the end and how it reminded him of his own moment like that in Duelist Kingdom in tbe animé as a way to show just how complicated Kaiba is.

For supposedly not planning on making this about a card game in the beginning; the author sure does zero in on the card game.

Pretty iconic battles.

I had no idea where it was going to go. All the duels were pretty cool. Excited to see how the arc finished.
