What a trip! I haven't read many graphic novels but this is my favorite so far. Such a fun, fun book!

This dude dies and is cremated. He leaves instructions and a map for his friends, asking them to scatter his ashes at the X on the map.

They had been close at one point but drifted away over the years. The three get reacquainted on this road trip, accompanied by a rescued circus monkey.

The monkey is my favorite character and gave me a good laugh with his choice of sexual partner.

The three unfortunate humans don't have nearly as good a time, with thugs on their backs and various mishaps along the way.

This story is a riot and the accompanying drawings are terrific and also fun. If anyone has read it and knows of any similar GNs, please tell me. Ashes was translated from Spanish and is so far the only one by this author that has been.

For some reason, English language GNs seem to be mainly YA or memoirs, not laughter-inducing fictional stories like this, that are just a tad racy and definitely not YA.

Este cómic es de los más cinematográficos y trepidantes que he leído en mi vida. Es una road movie emocional llena de sorpresas, de momentos profundos y de personajes secundarios originales y encantadores.

Me encanta cómo el autor distribuye las viñetas en la página (a veces comunicándose entre sí, variando el tamaño y la forma según la escena); me encanta cómo el autor usa la paleta de colores en tonos pastel; me encanta cómo el autor es capaz de construir una historia que tiene cierto sabor estadounidense pero que tiene un carácter universal; me encanta cómo el autor construye unos personajes complejos, llenos de frustraciones e inseguridades, muy reales, con los que el lector se siente muy cercano; me encanta cómo el autor usa escenarios estimulantes propios del cine de aventuras, a pesar de que está contando una historia sobre la amistad. Podría gustarme mucho más la letra, sí: la preferiría más fácilmente legible.

Había escuchado maravillas sobre los cómics de Álvaro Ortiz y tenía miedo a que ‘Cenizas’ me decepcionara. Ahora creo que la gente que me lo había recomendado se quedó corta.

Otro de los regalos que me ha caído en el último envío de mi colega Santi. En esta ocasión he disfrutado de lo lindo con esta road movie protagonizada por personajes entrañables, diálogos naturales y buenísimos, y una trama que va de menos a más y cierra de manera muy redonda. Solo hay un detalle que deja al descubierto las costuras y me cortó un poco el rollo cuando más a tope estaba con la historia, aunque luego recupera y se queda en anécdota. Un cómic tremendamente ágil, simpático y muy agradable a la vista. Tres estrellas y media.

No esperaba que me fuera a gustar tanto, ni que me emocionara como lo ha hecho cuando he llegado al final y he roto a llorar como una tonta. Además de un gran trabajo artístico y un más que acertado manejo de los diálogos y de la narración, Álvaro nos cuenta una historia que nos va atrapando poco a poco, donde mezcla intriga y sentimientos y también humor de una manera brutal. El uso del color y la distribución de las viñetas es magnífico. Pero sí, lo que ha logrado robarme el corazón ha sido la gran historia de amistad que hay detrás. Un cómic fantástico que recomiendo a todo el mundo.

Although I found the art in this graphic novel to be a little cartoonish, I was nonetheless impressed with the colour, panel structure, and overall design. But I found the tale to be disjointed. There were estranged friends traveling together, information about cremation, a monkey, etc. Although I don't think I would enjoy the quirky humor, I would like to read other stories from creative and talented authors such as Mr. Alvaro Ortiz.

"Popioły" nie są tak oryginalne jak "Murderabilia", ale bardzo umiejętnie grają zajechanymi motywami i tworzą sympatyczną historię drogi, którą na półce umieściłbym gdzieś obok "Flake" - Matthew Dooley'a, czyli w przegródce fajnych, niezobowiązujących, ale inteligentnych historii dla każdego. Tym razem nie mordercy, nie koty, ale tytułowe popioły są motywem przewodnim. Autor wtrąca w fabułę fakty historyczne (tzn. wydaje mi się , że to są fakty) na temat podejścia do kremacji na przestrzeni dekad. Te wszystkie wtręty, dygresje, narracyjne sztuczki, retrospekcje i prezentacje równolegle toczących się wydarzeń to sprytne zabiegi, które właśnie sposób opowiadania wysuwają na pierwszy plan. Bez spiny, ze sporą dawką melancholii i ulotnych emocji. Bardzo przyjemna rzecz

Sad, strange, lovely, and heartfelt. I loved this little graphic novel so much.

Three friends take a road trip to an unknown destination to take their friend's ashes to their final resting place. A sweet little story that plays all the heartstrings and has a sadly beautiful ending.

Ashes was an unexpected delight for me. I had heard it was good and I'm trying to read more comics in translation so I decided to give it a go while knowing very little about it. The story follows three friends (and a monkey) as they go on a journey to spread a fourth friend's ashes as a spot marked with a mysterious x on a map. There are plenty of wild turns as the friends reunite after not seeing each other for years. It's silly and funny, surprisingly emotional and poignant, and definitely entertaining. It also includes a number of nonfiction passages about the history of cremation, which are fascinating. The art was pretty solid and easy to follow. It really hit all the right spots for me, and the ending was very satisfying. I loved this, which I didn't anticipate going in, but I'm so glad I read it. Definitely worth the read!

D'Álvaro Ortiz ja em va agradar "La pequeña genia" de literatura infantil. Aquest cop m'he atrevit amb aquesta novel·la gràfica per a adults i m'ha agradat mot.

Cenizas parla d'un grup d'amics a la trentena que es retroben uns anys després, amb una única missió. Portar les cendres d'un dels amics, a un lloc que aquest ha deixat escrit abans de morir.

En el viatge, els altres 3 es posen al dia, es retroben... Però no tots els retrobaments són dolços... O sí?

És una road movie emocional plena de sorpreses, de moments profunds i de personatges secundaris originals i encantadors. Les sorpreses hi són fins al final, en què fa un gir inesperat que no m'esperava i m'ha encisat.

Una novel·la gràfica potent, interessant, amb vinyetes i il·lustracions precioses que narren la història per si soles per la seva sensacionalitat.

Este road trip combina muy bien cierta ternura con un humor bastante negro y crecientes toques de surrealismo. Perfila muy bien a sus personajes y engancha con la historia, pero si me tengo que quedar con algo, es con su estructura y su narrativa visual. Es flipante lo que hace con las viñetas, cómo maneja el tempo y controla la tensión mediante la forma en la que te guía por cada rectángulo. Además, la estructura de roadtrip mezclada con flashbacks, insertos locos del monete o anécdotas sobre la historia de la cremación, le dan mucha frescura y ritmo a la lectura.

3.25 stars. This one was a journey. Literally, the book is about a journey and connections and friends and life and death. There’s some wild elements like cowboys, bikers, and a monkey. I enjoyed this read, but it just didn’t have the emotional payoff quite like I had hoped it would in the end.

Things I love: road trips, characters who used to be close and are now awkwardly reconnecting, and the history of cremation.

Things I don't really care for: hostage situations, caricature villains, a monkey for the sake of a monkey.

Ashes is a beautifully illustrated road trip graphic novel that contains both elements I'm into and things that grind my gears. As much as I enjoyed the single-page interludes that were somewhat off-topic, I found they made some portions of the plot more difficult to follow and far less emotionally impactful than I'd hoped for. While this book and I didn't really click, I think it would resonate with readers who enjoy having a circus monkey and two bearded villains named smirnov among their humorous cast of characters.

Recommended if you're into road-trip stories, love beautiful art, and want to explore cremation through humour.

Polly, Moho, and Piter used to be great friends. Now, not so much. Time and distance have changed all of that. But perhaps one epic road trip can help them come back together, even if there is a bit of drama.

My Review:

I'll be honest with you here; I really didn't know what to expect from Ashes. It looked like it would be such a fun read, and I've been trying to be better about reading translated works lately (there are SO many gems out there!).

Naturally, my lack of expectations meant I was pretty blindsided by how intense and emotional this read it. Think about any faded friendship you've had – there are a lot of complex emotions wrapped up in those memories, right? Consider that emotional mess the foundation of a graphic novel, and you'll have a better idea of where Ashes starts.

From there, it turns into so much more as these three friends tackle death, the nature of forgiveness and understand what friendship means to them. I love that each of the characters gets a chance to show their backstory – including the monkey! That was a cute surprise, if I may say so.

Troje przyjaciół - Polly, Peter i Moho (i jego małpa), spotyka się po latach, aby spełnić ostatnią wolę Hectora, niegdyś czwartego muszkietera w ich paczce. Nie wiemy jak mężczyzna zginął, ale był to sposób raczej z tych niepoważnych, a trójce bohaterów zlecił wysypanie jego prochów w tajemniczym miejscu oznaczonym X-em na mapce. Wyruszają więc w tygodniową podróż samochodem, nie spodziewając się jakie przygody jedno z nich ściągnie na ich głowy. A będzie się działo! Spodziewajcie się nielegalnych substancji, tajemniczych posiadłości po środku niczego, zemsty, pościgu, awantur, podstarzałych weteranów z fanklubu ZZ Top, małpich figli i spełniania dawno zapomnianych marzeń.
Jest to podróż nie tylko do wyznaczonego celu, ale też w przeszłość, więc przyglądamy się początkom znajomości bohaterów (choć tu chciałabym dużo więcej), ale też historii każdego z nich osobno i tego gdzie dziś utknęli w swoich życiach.
Jakby tego było mało, autor jako przerywniki serwuje czytelniczce mini reportaż o kremacji, przybliżając historię palenia zwłok, podejście do procederu w różnych kulturach i zaskakujące anegdotki (wiecie komu Courtney Love zaproponowała wciągnięcie nosem prochów Kurta Cobaina?).
Jest to komiks bardzo dobrze przemyślany i zrealizowany, upstrzony ciekawymi rozwiązaniami fabularnymi, które pozwalają utrzymać tempo i uwagę widzki. Jednak to, za co najbardziej lubię Ortiza, to jego inteligentne i absolutnie niesforne poczucie humoru (scena seksu międzygatunkowego omg 🫣). Śmiałam się często, ale też z przyjemnością poddawałam sentymentalizmowi obecnemu w tym albumie. Pomimo braku rozwinięcia niektórych wątków i momentów z głupia frant, „Popioły” to album bardzo przyjemny i odprężający. Ortiz wkracza do grona moich komiksowych pewniaków.

What a weird book. There are definitely a few unnecessary things that occur during it that make me want to bust it down a few stars (Pgs 46, 94, & 133).

The main premise is three estranged friends reunite to deliver a friend’s ashes to their final resting place. It yells from the roof tops immediately that this is going to be a quirky book. It even uses the official short hand of quirky by having an opening quote by The Pixies.

Overall, it’s a fun short read about reconnecting with old friends.

P.S. The story is inter-spliced with vignettes about cremation and at the end the author claims these stories are taken directly from the book A Brief History of Cremation by Lazáro Vitro. I looked them up and they seemed to be made up stories and I couldn’t find any mention of this book. It then took me a minute to realize the final joke. Bravo Álvaro Ortiz.

Se trata básicamente de un novela gráfica a base de tiras cómicas. Solo viendo la portada y leyendo el rsument de la contraportada se entiende perfectamente el tono del libro. Todo el tiempo tenía una sonrisa en la cara, y ganas de enseñarle la mitad de las viñetas a mis amigos. Pero aunque sea graciosa, el guión no deja de ser bueno y entretenido, los personajes bien desarrollados y evolucionan en el poco tiempo en el que transcurre la historia.
Del dibujo hay que destacar el uso del color y que, a pesar de ser simple, tansmite perfectamente las emociones de los personajes. Me ha dejado con ganas de leer mas de este autor.

“All three of us? Plus the monkey?”

On the surface of it this is one of those graphic novels where the drawing and lettering initially did very little for me, though I enjoyed the pleasing use of colour, but it’s the sheer quality and attraction of the story itself, which makes this so strong and the drive and momentum of the narrative over rides the average art work.

This has a few intriguing tricks up its sleeve, and quickly develops into a fun, offbeat and unpredictable road movie of a book, with echoes of Lynch, Tarantino and the Coen Brothers and I really enjoyed this, it’s a smart and fun read.

My local library had a digital copy of the English translation of this comic and I’m so glad that I got the opportunity to experience it! I didn’t expect for the main plot to be interspersed with the history of cremation but it ended up being a great touch, it felt like a totally gonzo adventure with a real learning opportunity. I think the plot would have felt like it jumped the shark in any other medium, but in there gently pastel comic pages the absurdity just added to the charm. As someone grieving some recently deceased loved ones who opted to be cremated, this felt cathartic to laugh and cry in turn. I got so absorbed into the plot that when a poignant moment came along it really felt impactful. Perfect for fans of hotels, monkeys, and enstranged friends getting the band back together.

Una joyita escondida. Me ha gustado mucho. La historia es muy entretenida, con algunos giros que te mantienen enganchado y el final es un abrazo calentito al corazón. Historia de 10 y el color es una gozada. El dibujo no termina de encantarme pero extrañamente encaja con la historia a la perfección de alguna manera.
