This book is called Newport Summer and I was looking for a book that takes place in the summer for a reading challenge so I picked it up. This is your basic romance story, the characters are likeable enough. It's fairly predictable, nothing wrong with it. The heroine got on my nerves with her stupid tunnel vision of what she wanted, even when the hero is all but begging her to give him a chance. She was presented as a good, kind person but her unbending attitude was irritating. And one thing that really bothered me was everyone referring to Audrey as a chit, that isn't a complimentary term and someone should have advised and edited it out. Over and over people were calling Audrey a chit. Not nice, unless they meant she was fairly obnoxious and full of herself. If you're looking for light romance, you might enjoy this one.
(A fast and easy read at 3.5 stars.) A very charming and straightforward romance. A bit too chaste for my usual taste, but the plot and storytelling more than made up for the lack of sexy bits. Tales about the Newport social scene in the late 1800s is usually overshadowed by the more popular regency era, so this one was fresh for me. Gannon, an impoverished earl, was both suave and sensitive--and desperate to marry an heiress to save his estate. What started out as a secret agreement at an attempt for both he and Audrey to get what they wanted eventually developed into deeper feelings. I enjoyed their romance but especially how Gannon easily welcomed his growing love for Audrey. But Audrey had dreams and aspirations of her own, and the wonderful Gannon let her dream. How lovely!
This was cute, but less than I was hoping for. Having grown up in New England, with frequent trips to Newport, I was hoping to read about the community, buildings, traditions, etc., just before the turn of the century, with it an important character in and of itself, and there was just nothing, nothing more than the barest facts. It was pretty bare on the historical detail in general, actually. That disappointment aside, it was a cute story with an interesting premise. Well written, engaging, and hard to put down.
i enjoyed this story. (it wasn't what i thought it was going to be though. i thought it was going to be about the fourth friend from her other three books.) ms. poppen, i have to say has been a delight to read because out of the many regenacy romances i have read her books still managed to introduce me to many new vocabulary. i can't wait for her next book!!
An enjoyable historical romance. An impoverished English earl comes to America to find a rich heiress to marry and thus to save his estate. He finds her but she has other plans for her life. However, she needs himto help her realize her dreams and he needs $$$, so they hatch a plan. Of course, not all goes exactly as planned. Delightful story.
A fun read if you're a nostalgic romantic like myself. Absolutely NOT a classic work of literary art, but it's fun and light and easy, like reading a romantic daydream. I'd recommend it for a summer afternoon by the beach.
