Why did I ever think Emerson and I were a good idea? She's my assistant, so I have to see her every day. We get along, for the most part, but there's subtle hostility between us both. Being on my own is better. It makes far more sense. Until something terrible happens, something I didn't see coming, and it's those moments of tragedy that change you forever. I've changed...and I can never go back.
This is the wrap up for Derek and Emerson. This author never makes it easy for our H/h. After the cliffhanger from the last book, you knew this segment wasn't going to be a cake walk. But with one totally unexpected event, the author rips out our hearts and makes us ugly cry.
This is another deep crawl into the psyche of Derek and Emerson and even Lizzie, Deacon, and Chloe. Lots of heavy emotions in this story. A strong family theme is the thread that binds this story together. It's a great conclusion with several epilogues that just makes my heart happy.
I really love this series. I don't know what I loved more. The conclusion of Derek and Emerson's story or the start of Dex's.
There has always been a high emotional current in this series. I was super invested in the last book and was as pissed with Derek as Emerson was.
As such, I was happy that his road to redemption was not lined with gold. That boy had to work for it!
It never felt excessive the hoops Derek had to jump through to redeem his rather dramatic exit in the last instalment. But I also like the sense of reality that grounded this novel. Emerson was not easily swayed and I will admit that towards the end of the novel, I still wanted him to suffer a little bit more.
While unfortunate, he needed a tragedy to wake him up from all that anger and resentment. With this, we got a different Derek. His cold indifference was notably less this time and it was interesting to see him broken down as a man, rather than a gifted rocket scientist.
Emerson felt less present this time but I understood why and I didn't mind spending a considerable amount of time from Derek's POV. I loved her mother and daughter moments with Lizzie and appreciated her single parent struggles.
I loved the growth and the 360 Deacon took when trouble hit. He was always so straight-laced throughout Derek's instalments that it made him seem like a clown. Just constantly laughing.
But to see the Deacon that Cleo met the first day he moved in was an appreciated change, even if he was being a bit dark.
I can't remember if this series was loaded with sex scenes but there was only one in this book. The focus was on family and forgiveness.
But after what was a pleasant and satisfying novel, we met Sicily and Dex. While I somewhat expected his story to be next, I was not expecting the different sides to the man I saw in this preview.
As for Sicily, her character jumped right off the pages and into my soul. She is my spirit animal! I am eager for the next instalment in this series!
This eighth book was sad. I’m not going to sugar coat it. When we ended the last installment we saw every hope and dream dashed. No one was happy, everyone lost a huge part of themself, and frankly, there was still more of a free fall coming that no one anticipated.
Emerson tried to put on a brave face for Lizzie – knowing that she wasn’t able to break down because he daughter needed her. that’s the interesting thing about teens though, or pre-teens – they know everything and see everything and are able to adapt so much better than we give them credit for. This was Lizzies book to shine because she showed us that there’s resilience, there’s hope and there’s forgiveness. She sees the truth in people, and she knows when she should ask for help, and yet she’s loyal to a fault and that’s so necessary in this story. Emerson tries to move on with her life, knowing that she needs to keep this job for the money that it brings, allowing her to support her family. She tries to find another job and has no success, so even though her heart is broken and she’s got anger, she’s stuck.
On the flip side, we have Derek, the man with no soul, who carries so much anger and hatred around that he probably even hates himself. He knows that he’s hurt Emerson, but he frankly doesn’t. care. He’s cold and calculated and he chooses to wallow in his own misery because that’s how he’s operated for the past 10 years.
Derek knows that he’s lost everything, and his dark hole is where he’s happy to put himself. His rocket exploded, he can’t control himself with his ‘friends’ from his past. The only person who wanted him for him hates him….so there’s really no reason to live.
Throughout this story we watch the emersion of a whole new dynamic. We see Derek’s family play a larger role in the greater story of happiness. We watch family illness take precedent and reset priorities. The foundation of Derek’s world is rocked again and again, with Emerson gone, his mother diagnosed with Cancer, his father falling apart – and he has no one to support him as he needs.
There’s the theme of personal / self realization. Growing into who you are capable of being versus what you think you are or what you think others think you should be. Emerson has turned into a person that’s not true to her core. Lizzie has the opportunity to be something great, yet Derek ruined her confidence in what that could truly be. Derek was becoming the man he should hae always been and yet he goes back to his roots.
Love doesn’t come without pain, and it also doesn’t come without compromise. There’s a journey that’s necessary in order to find happiness, but the way that Ms Quinn, our amazing author has written this part of the series, we know that there’s not always a happy ending and there’s not always the resolution that we want. Family started to mean something more, and yet, family is breakable.
The segue here is into Dex’s story – Deacon and Cleo’s first child together. He’s in med school and we know that there has to be a deeper story with him since he seems cheery and carefree, but there must be something underneath it all that makes him tick in a complex way, because well….he’s a Hamilton. So while we’re hoping for a happier ending to Derek and Emerson’s story, we are also getting excited to the intro of Dex
It's been quite some time since I've stumbled upon a book that's so emotionally charged and vivid, that every feeling depicted in it surges through me. Derek and Emerson shine a light on the realities of being in a relationship. The notion that perfection is an unattainable goal, there will always be imperfections, tough days, and hurdles to overcome. However, the book beautifully illustrates that with love, forgiveness, and understanding, there's always a way forward- if we are willing to open up our hearts to the possibility. It emphasizes that a strong foundation and having the right people in our lives make it all worthwhile. Time and time again, the book reiterates that healing is possible and beyond our wildest imagination lies something incredibly beautiful.
Wow wow wow. I honestly couldn’t put this story down. Emotions all over the place. Would Emerson and Derek ever find themselves back together. Was the hurt the betrayal too much. Could Derek find a way back..... especially with all the grief he has gone through. When his dad demands he comes home for dinner and then faces the turmoil, I honestly felt I was there. Cleo being Cleo and always seeing th best in people. It takes a trauma for Derek to wake up and smell the roses. Is it too late...... You have to read this, I was sad to see the story end but glad we get to read Dec’s story.

This is seriously the best book out of the entire series. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop! Now I’m sad that it is over!! The way that Derek and Emerson both grow in this book is amazing! The emotional rollercoaster this book takes you on is intense. Expect really high highs and really low lows! I have never cried so much during a book as I did this one! The family was out through the test but in the end they came out stronger because of what they went through! This is definitely the best book in the series!
Goodness! The final book in Derek and Emersons story kept pulling at my heartstrings. Especially when they said Cleo had cancer and started chemo. Derek was awful to Emerson but after seeing what Cleo was going through he opened his eyes to try to get Emerson back. She held strong for the longest but after finding out Cleo was sick she was there for Derek! It took him proposing to her to finally agree to take it slow. Absolutely loved Lizzie accepting Derek as her dad that she never had! It was absolutely bittersweet! Cleo kicked cancers butt was amazing! Loved it!
What a great ending to Derek and Emerson's love story. My eyes water thought out the whole story. It definitely was real emotional rollercoaster of feeling going on it this book. I also loved how we saw Derek fight for the womens he love (Emerson & Liz). I'm sad that their story is over but I enjoyed the journey this book took us on and watching Emerson & Derek grow. Now I'm super excited for Dex's story. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
OMG what a book. I loved this book so much. It’s probably my favourite of the series so far, although I probably wouldn’t have been so emotionally invested had I not read the previous books. I can’t remember the last time I sobbed through parts of a book but I really did with this one. So much happened but it didn’t feel too rushed, although a little more could have been made of Cleo’s battle but the book wasn’t about her and more about Derek dealing with the issue. Beautifully and sensitively written. Would have given it more stars if I could.
I loved this author and first 4 books but was extremely frustrated with the "boy" series. I get broken soul and all that but in 4 book there is about 4 chapters of happiness in this entire series. I know you need angst and heartbreak. But 4 books of grief I got through just wondering what I read and why the writer hated these characters so much. Seriously it has about an hour of happiness. I felt washed out and drained. I am not going to even bother with the last books which is a shame I adored the first 4 books.
This book has everything, Derek finds his heart again after cruelly breaking Emerson’s whose done nothing but support him, she’s one of the few who actually understand him and loves him for him not who he is or his money. He finds he misses teaching Liz and is worried about her grades but shes also broken and hurt by his betrayal, this is a hard lesson for him but it’s one he’s ready to face with everything he has to make it right. Honestly loved this book and i’ll read it again and again.
These books are so fucking good!!!! I get sad every time I come to the end of one. As you get further and further into the series the books just keep getting better and better. I don’t think I cried so much while reading a book. This book managed to break my heart, and I mean it BROKE my heart, while putting the pieces back together again. This is officially my favorite series. I recommend this series to anyone that comes across it. I PROMISE you, you won’t be disappointed.
This is the conclusion of Emerson and Dereks story. Unforeseen circumstances throw Derek back into his old ways: Cold, Hard, uncompromising. Emerson, devastated tries to make a life without him. What comes next is heartbreaking for all. In Typical Victoria Quinn style she brings everything together, ties up loose ends, and revisits prior characters in a fantastic culmination of the storyline. Highly recommend this series!

Oh my goodness. I never knew I could be such an emotional wreck over one book. This book pulled on every last one of my emotional strings. Derek and Emerson’s relationship was a real as it could get which made the story that much more reliable. The breakups with emotions still tired. And Cleo and Deacon...oh goodness, my heart couldn’t take it. This was such a beautiful story.
I love this series! Derek started out being an A$$ to Emerson she was devastated. Then tragedy makes him take a good look at his actions and realize how much he had hurt Emerson. So, he must regain her trust which is no easy task. After reading preview of next book I will be anxiously waiting for its release
Wauw. Een diepe buiging voor jou Victoria Quinn
I CRIED, boo-hooed something fierce. Victoria Quinn writes so well, builds characters and situations that grab your heart and HOLD ON TIGHT! Derek & Emerson's story finished out in "Spite Me" and moves on to Dex. Can't wait! Thank you for your time, talent AND THE STORIES!
…in the best way. Holy wow, what a rollercoaster. So much happened, and they all went through so much to get there. One of the most engaging series I’ve ever read, and I’ll be thinking about these characters for a while.
Dex, you’re up, with some biiiiiig shoes and a hot leather jacket to fill.
I loved Deacon and Cleo!! But Derek and Emerson broke my heart and put back together again! I cried through this whole book. What an amazing series. This is my first time reading this authors and I am not disappointed!! So excited to read Dex and Daisy's now!! ❤️
I love Derek and Emerson! They are hands down my favorite fictional couple to date. The character arch Derek has is amazing. This book tugged on my heartstrings in a completely unexpected way. I can't wait to see what happens with his brother Derek and Sicily.
I anxiously awaited this book and Victoria Quinn did not disappoint. The depth she put into Derek's emotional revelation and his acceptance by Emerson and Puzzle almost brought me to tears. I cannot wait to see what happens with Dex.
This was a wonderful end to this portion of the story. This had everything tons of drama, enough emotion to make you cry, and steamy hot passion. Ms. Quinn’s characters are always interesting and vivid and her story’s are the kind you can’t put down. I can’t wait for the next book
What a great ending to Derek and Emerson's love story. It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster and I loved their journey. I am so excited for Dex’s story which is releasing in a few short weeks. #MSBB
Damn, I cried so much. This book focused mostly on family ties, specifically the Hamilton's as well as Emerson & Lizzie; it really pulled at my heartstrings. I can't believe I just breezed through all 4 books within 4 days but I loved every moment of it. Dex's story is going to be interesting.
Tenía mucho tiempo sin leer un libro que me hiciera llorar, cuando leí que Cleo tenía cáncer, fué como wow, me encantó que Dereck llorara muchísimo en todo el libro, que la autora hizo un personaje completo

It’s rare that I cry while reading a book. However, this book got to me. It got me good! While reading I was even recommending to a friend. This whole series has had me on my toes and biting my nails. I cannot wait to read what the author has in store for us next.
I loved Cleo and Deacon; fell in love with Derek and Emerson; and now so excited for Dex’s story. Love this series. Shed several tears and gasped at the drama 5 star
