The volumes that are mostly comprised of a single case are generally stronger than the many cases, and this is no exception. The author remarks that she's trying to write a detective story without the detective this time around, and while it isn't perfect - there's no The Old Man in the Corner for Kanoko - it's still a fun departure from formula and a decent mystery in itself.
I love this series more and more with every volume! The last volume was one of my favorites, but honestly, this one might be even more so! LOL! (Do I detect a trend for the rest of the series?!)
Goodness, THE STAKES in this volume though!! I felt SO many emotions seeing Mr. Iwai be taken to jail!
But I admired Kanako SO much!! She did AMAZING! I love how her belief in Mr. Iwai being innocent and that he WAS framed kept her going strong when things were super rough in the beginning. As a result, I know I definitely didn't expect her to "tag team" with another character due to events in previous volumes!
AND THE BOMBSHELL HE DROPPED!!! :o :o :o
I don't know what to expect next volume because in between what that character said followed by finding out a little bit more about Mr. Iwai, it seems that our detectives are not going to be getting a break anytime soon! LOL!
But I'm eagerly looking forward to it! I really loved seeing Kanako shine and think it will give her more confidence in upcoming volumes as she continues to stand by Mr. Iwai's side like she desires.
Hoping the wait won't feel TOO long for the next volume because I'm already wanting it in my hands right now!
The first chapter was a cute short story and mystery involving Mr. Kaoru Hanasaki, Mr. Iwai's childhood friend (and a such a cutie and major green flag).
The rest of the novel revolves around a murder mystery in which the primary suspect is non other than... Mr. Iwai??!
According to the author's note, she wanted to explore what would happen to the story if detective was out of the picture and it was up to the detective's assistant (Kanoko) to solve the crime. I loved this premise and though it was very well done. I also loved the reappearance of the mysterious Shiro (if that's even his real name!)
We also learn a bit about Mr. Iwai's past and I think we'll be learning more about him in subsequent volumes.
Things are heating up as the story progresses. We have not heard of Iwai's family till this volume and to top it off he has been framed for murder. Though Kanoko comes off as naive she does put in the effort this time around and show off her detecting skills. I am looking forward to see where the story takes us.
Very interesting story in this volume. The mystery is still very much alive and of course our lovable characters continue to charm us. Worth every min you can spend read this amazing series
The main mystery in this book brings up more questions than answers when solved, which is really intriguing. Looking forward to seeing those questions answered, hopefully soon.
Nothing was gonna stop Hanasaki from getting married right? 😂 Sakiko is so pretty 😍
That chapter was just so gooood Hanasaki being the sweet man that he is getting into trouble, Souma and Kanoko helping him Their reactions killed me 😂 But Souma was such a good friend Everybody deserves to live their life without lying to themselves
BUT damn this volume was crazy!!! I read it as fast as I can
That guy who claimes he's Shiro is so INTERESTING Loved seeing him again
That was the best one so far! Kanoko has gone real far as the main character, and Souma has had some depth to him as well. The "Shiro" villain thing really spiced the story up as well, allowing for some unexpected developments. Me likey.

4.5 stars. More mysteries and world building brought forth in an interesting way. Our heroine went off by herself to help the framed detective. We get more of the mysterious guy. Cool beans.
