I thought the cover felt very dark romance-y and did not match the 1900s setting but since there is epilepsy rep, I picked this up.
This is set in UK and Felicity "Fliss" does a monotonous payroll job by day and bartends as well as plays her drums by night. She initially thinks her younger colleague, Adam hates her but really, he has social anxiety. He is a dominant and in the BDSM lifestyle, the rules and expectations are clear unlike society which he struggles with. I wondered whether he was on the autism spectrum.
They get to know each other when she kindly invites him to the bar she works at when she sees him being lonely on his birthday. Captivated by Fliss, Adam tells her about the lifestyle and she decides to try with him.
I liked how they support each other but it felt insta-lovey. The way he takes care of her when she has a fit and after care was so sweet. The characters also do some reflection in terms of what career they would like and explore that separately. The setting of the underground punk and rock scene as well as clasp of the internet/email emerging plus how subversive Fliss felt was interesting. The misorgany she experience while she tries to sell her music and produce was sad to see. She didn't feel like the typical romance heroine with her coarse language, telling people off when needed and innate beliefs.
Tropes: Age gap (younger hero-older heroine by seven years), caretaking
