Fliss can’t stand Adam-the-arsehole, whose annoying but gorgeous face she has to ignore at her crappy office job every day. After accidentally inviting him out on his birthday, she takes him to her other job, working at Teddy’s Pub and drumming in a band. What she doesn’t expect is that the tight-jawed IT guy is actually kind, thoughtful and doesn’t hate her, but the thing Fliss expects the least is that he’s into her and wants to introduce her to his world.

Adam can’t believe it — seeing Fliss play the drums and finally able to speak to her without raging anxiety changes him. He’s only had play partners and is increasingly lonely, but for Fliss, he takes the risk and tells her who he is and what he wants.

As Adam slowly unpicks her secrets and introduces her to his lifestyle, an opportunity to make her career in music leaves him with a choice, let her go live her dream or hold her back. If you love them, let them go, right?

I thought the cover felt very dark romance-y and did not match the 1900s setting but since there is epilepsy rep, I picked this up.

This is set in UK and Felicity "Fliss" does a monotonous payroll job by day and bartends as well as plays her drums by night. She initially thinks her younger colleague, Adam hates her but really, he has social anxiety. He is a dominant and in the BDSM lifestyle, the rules and expectations are clear unlike society which he struggles with. I wondered whether he was on the autism spectrum.

They get to know each other when she kindly invites him to the bar she works at when she sees him being lonely on his birthday. Captivated by Fliss, Adam tells her about the lifestyle and she decides to try with him.

I liked how they support each other but it felt insta-lovey. The way he takes care of her when she has a fit and after care was so sweet. The characters also do some reflection in terms of what career they would like and explore that separately. The setting of the underground punk and rock scene as well as clasp of the internet/email emerging plus how subversive Fliss felt was interesting. The misorgany she experience while she tries to sell her music and produce was sad to see. She didn't feel like the typical romance heroine with her coarse language, telling people off when needed and innate beliefs.

Tropes: Age gap (younger hero-older heroine by seven years), caretaking

4.5 rounded up to 5

I could read an entire series about these two, or even just the characters as a whole around Teddy's pub. I could feel the love of the alt punk rock scene flow through the pages, and the tenderness and care of the two main characters even more so, especially for the CNC scene at the end which many other writers fail to do. I'll make up my own story of Drew and June in my head. I am definitely going to be reading more from this author.

It may have just been my kindle edition but there were some formatting errors, such as giant blocks of spaces before the next paragraph in the same scene, but I got used to it.

Good pacing and at least at first good chemistry. I think for me it suffered from having too many external obstacles that were overcome fairly easily. I want the book to be about the development of the relationship, and Adam and Fliss settled into a very nice and rational relationship very quickly. The settings and character voices were great. It might be great for someone who wants a really low angst love story--I'm not that person.

Unlike a lot of KU stuff (I actually got this for free on one of those stuff your kindle days), it is well written and well plotted (without pages and pages and PAGES of unnecessary everything). I liked it fine, just not enough to read more by this author.

It took me WAY too long to realize that the chapter titles were 90s songs.
Ok, so this was my first book by this author, and I’d say it’s good. The first half was better than the last, which basically amounted to “The MMC is the perfect partner and BDSM might resolve all your trauma.”
Not sure that I buy into either of those things, and all the possible issues surrounding the two were either quickly resolved or ended up not being an issue. I kept expecting something else to happen that never did.
But the characters were still interesting, the building relationship very steamy, and the quality of the story better than some. So a solid 3 stars for something completely different.

Another absolutely fantastic book by Stefanie.

Disability rep. Fliss has epilepsy and Adam is Neurodivergent.

The book is set in 1994 in the alternative music scene.
Fliss is drummer and Adam is a bit of a nerd.

When Fliss has an opportunity to expand her music career, is Adam strong enough to let her go?
If you love something, set it free.
If it comes back, it’s yours.
If it doesn’t, was never meant to be.

Totally loving the found family aspect of this book.

Sex scenes are definitely kinky. If you like Rope Bondage, CNC, Primal Play, Exhibitionism

I almost finished it in one night but had a morning appointment to get up for the next day. So good I didn’t want to put it down.

The characters and the retro setting came alive. As I said in my comment partway through, I love that all the chapters are song titles from the era. There’s also a link at the end to a YouTube playlist.

Adam and Fliss both felt so human and authentic. Their backstories are woven into the story seamlessly and enhance their relatability.

I didn’t find the spice at all excessive. Somewhere, I once heard the measure of a good sex scene is whether or not it evolves the relationship between the characters. It felt like every erotic scene accomplished that.

Yet at the same time, the sex was ground in passion and emotion, which only made the book that much more enjoyable to read.

I pay too much attention, I've decided. Even in spicy scenes, if I know we didn't see him unbutton his pants, it didn't happen. How is his dick out if we never unbuttoned or unzipped? Takes me right out of the moment. Also, I'd love a book with no conflict to see how everyone gets on.

Gorgeous contemporary erotic romance between two relatable, imperfect, neurodivergent MCs. This book gave me serious feels.

This was quite good. Although thinking of a book set in 1994 as a historical romance makes me feel positively ancient. I really loved hearing about Fliss’ life - she was a great heroine with attitude. Her crew of friends was a delight. The relationship with Adam was also really sweet in how they supported each other.
This was very spicy with a depth (heh) and breadth of variously kinky play. At times it did feel like it dragged on and I skimmed a bit. I felt like I wanted to get back to the meat of the story.
I would definitely read more by this author.
